About the Musical Fidelity M6i

Jim Richardson

Sometimes less really is more

The M6i is actually two mono amps and a preamp in one solidly built, vibration-resistant chassis. There's one huge power supply for the amps and a separate supply for the preamp. You get plenty of muscle to handle large musical peaks with ease. And you get the finesse to reproduce quiet passages accurately, with high resolution of fine detail.

Sometimes less really is more

How would you design the perfect amplifier? By adding the ingredients that are necessary? Or by subracting those that are not?

If you favor subtraction, then you'll admire Musical Fidelity's minimalist approach to amplifier design. Even simple things like tone and balance controls have been taken away in pursuit of musical truth.

Elegant circuit design and impeccable build quality yield glorious sound

Dual mono design

The M6i's dual mono circuit topology trickles down from Musical Fidelity's flagship amplifier, the legendary 2 x 1,000-watt Titan.

Bass notes hit hard and stop on a dime. When a drummer uses twin bass pedals, you'll hear each stroke as a separate event. You'll become keenly aware of the recording space and each musician's location within it. Familiar recordings will sound brand new. This is the level of performance you can expect from Musical Fidelity products like the M6i and the companion M6CD CD player.

Ample high-current power to drive demanding high-end speakers

Some of the world's best loudspeakers are notoriously power hungry. Bring 'em on. The M6i will drive 4-ohm loads easily, and will put out 400 watts per channel while so doing. Into 8 ohms, you get 200 full-bandwidth watts per channel, with a scant 0.01% THD.

Plenty of hook-up options

If you have a high-end CD player with balanced XLR output you'll maximize its performance by connecting it to the corresponding input on the M6i. You also get four RCA audio inputs and a tape monitor loop for adding an equalizer or headphone amp. An aux input can be configured for home theater bypass.

The USB input accepts up to CD-resolution data from your computer. It sounds good, but if you're a serious computer audiophile, take a look at Musical Fidelity's outboard DACs, the V-DAC and M1DAC. They include a 24-bit/192 kHz upsampling chipset and other enhancements.

Product Research

Overview: The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier employs a low noise, high-quality preamplifier and two mono-block power amplifiers. Due to its excellent linearity, low distortion, and excellent load driving ability, the M6 Series amplifier can be paired with any loudspeaker. It's extremely quiet so high-sensitivity loudspeakers are fine, but at the same time it's very powerful so lower sensitivity speakers present no problem. The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier has excellent signal-to-noise ratio (>100dB), low distortion (<0.01%), wide bandwidth (10Hz-20kHz) and dynamic range, with extraordinary resolution and fine detail. As a result, your music sounds smooth, warm, and inviting (without colorization). The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier has been engineered to be as smooth and seamless in operation as possible. It has ultra low noise silent switching, perfect volume control matching even at very low levels, and outstanding power amp stability margins.

Note: The M6 Series integrated amplifier is designed to be partnered with the Musical Fidelity M6 Series CD player/DAC (778M6CDB, sold separately). This combination yields high-fidelity, audiophile sound. It can also be used with any CD player or external analog audio source which features either an analog stereo (RCA) or balanced XLR outputs.

Features

Rigid Chassis: The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier features an extruded aluminum front-panel, solid aluminum chassis, and machined metal front-panel controls to resist vibration and improve overall sound quality.

Extruded Aluminum Heat Sinks: The M6 Series integrated amplifier is equipped with integrated side-panel extruded aluminum heat sinks to keep the amplifier operating at normal temperatures for maximum performance.

Two Mono-block Power Amps with Separate Preamp: Although the M6 Series integrated amplifier is presented as a sleek single component, it is in fact a separate preamp with two high powered mono-block power amplifiers. Internally, the Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier is configured as two mono-block power amps and a separate preamp; each with its own transformer windings and power supply. As a result, the M6 Series integrated amplifier will deliver all music types exactly as the artist originally intended.

  • 2 Mono-block Power Amps: The power amplifier consists of two mono-block amplifiers with separate supplies for the absolute best in separation and imaging. Generously rated (200W per channel), they are enough to drive even the most demanding loudspeakers with ease.
  • Class A Preamp: The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier has a Class A preamp with its own, independent power supply with separate transformer windings.

High-Power, High-Current Design: The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier has high power (200W per channel), high current delivery, low distortion (<0.01%), wide bandwidth (10Hz-20kHz), and excellent signal-to-noise ratio (>100dB). As a result, the M6 Series integrate amplifier will drive any pair of loudspeakers to your liking.

4-Ohm Stable: The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier delivers 200-watts per channel. Into 4-ohms it delivers an amazing 400-watts per channel, and into 2-ohms it gives 800-watts per channel peaks.

Isolated Circuitry: Great attention has been paid to the integrated amplifier's internal layout, isolating each circuit section to prevent possible interaction.

Remote Control

IR Remote Control: The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the unit and your connected Musical Fidelity CD player (sold separately).

Note: The remote is powered by two "AAA" batteries.

Connections

Balanced and Unbalanced Analog Inputs: The Music Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier is equipped with both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) audio inputs to connect your CD player, media player, tuner, or other analog audio source.

  • Balanced XLR Inputs: The Music Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier features a true balanced XLR analog audio input to connect a high-end CD player or other home audio component. XLR is a higher-quality input that can reject noise and interference with equipment with balanced outputs.
  • Unbalanced RCA Inputs: The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier is equipped with 4 rear-panel analog stereo RCA inputs (CD, Tuner, HT/AUX, and Tape). These analog stereo RCA terminals are suited for any line-level source (except phono).

HT/AUX Input: The HT/AUX Input can be set to bypass the M6 Series integrated amplifier's volume control. This allows you to connect a source which requires its own volume control to be used.

USB Port: The Musical Fidelity M6 Series integrated amplifier features a rear-panel USB (type-B) port for the connection of your Windows PC or Mac computer, so you can listen to your stored compressed music files (CD, MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, FLAC) with high-quality sound.

Note: The CD-DAC's USB (type-B) port supports Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, and 7; as well as MAC OS X.

Tape Output: The integrated amplifier's analog stereo RCA tape-output lets you connect a tape recorder or CD-burner. The unit's tape-output is not affected by the volume control.

Pre-Out: The integrated amplifier's analog stereo RCA pre-out allows analog signals controlled by the volume, to pass on to a second amplifier (useful for bi-amping). You can also connect a powered subwoofer, which has its own built-in low-pass crossover.

Binding Posts: The M6 Series integrated amplifier is equipped with 4 binding-post speaker terminals to connect a pair of bookshelf or floor-standing loudspeakers. The binding-post terminals will accept bare wire, pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The binding post terminals are color-coded (red/black) to distinguish positive and negative.

Optional Phono Preamplifier: The M6 Series integrated amplifier does not feature a phono input. You will need an external phono preamplifier, such as the Musical Fidelity V-LPS, (778VLPS, sold separately) to connect a turntable.

Optional Headphone Amplifier: The M6 Series integrated amplifier does not feature a headphone output. You will need an external headphone amplifier, such as the Musical Fidelity V-CAN (778VCAN, sold separately) or the M1 Series headphone amplifier (778M1HPAB, sold separately) to connect a set of headphones.
