JL Audio's JX500/1D mono subwoofer amplifier

Compact, but beefy

You know you're holding a serious piece of sound equipment when you feel the heft of this tiny JX amp. JL Audio built it with sturdy, high-grade parts that ensure excellent heat management, provide high current flow, and deliver stable performance in almost any situation. You won't find blinking lights or meters on the outside of these amps, but you will find oversized output transistors and rugged MOSFET power supplies inside. The high-mass aluminum heatsink keeps things cool enough to virtually eliminate thermal shut-downs.

Features

Monoblock Amplifier: The JL Audio JX250/1D monoblock subwoofer amplifier that has been optimized for low-frequency (10-150 Hz) amplification of connected subwoofers.

Note: The JX250/1D is not designed for driving full-range speakers, midrange drivers, or tweeters.

Class D Amplifier Circuit: The JX250/1D employs an advanced Class D switching design that allows it to produce 160 watts of clean subwoofer power while drawing significantly less current from your electrical system and generating less heat than a conventional Class A/B or Class B design.

MOSFET Switching Power Supply: The JL Audio JX series monoblock amplifier employs a rugged MOSFET power supply for outstanding reliability and operational stability.

High-Mass Heat Sink: A heavy extruded aluminum heat sink is designed to keep the JX250/1D in a comfortable thermal range during demanding operation. This high-mass, extruded heat sink removes heat from the amplifier circuitry, extending high-power operation. This improves reliability and reduces the frequency of thermally related shut-down event.

Protection Circuitry: The JX250/1D's protection circuitry automatically shuts the amplifier down if thermal limits are exceeded, or a short-circuit is detected in the speaker wiring.

Status Indicator Lights: There are two status indicator lights on the right side of the amplifier.

  • Power (Green): This LED lights green to indicate that the amplifier is turned on and operating normally.
  • Protect (Red): The Protection LED lights red to indicate the amplifier's protection circuitry has been activated to prevent product failure due to thermal overload, a short-circuit, or a dangerously low impedance connected to the amplifier's outputs.
Controls

Input Sensitivity: The Input Sensitivity Control is used to match your source unit's output voltage to the input stage of the amplifier for maximum clean output:

  • Low-Level Input Range: 200mV-4V (RMS)
  • High-Level Input Range: 2V-10V (RMS)

Low Pass Crossover: The JL Audio JX250/1D monoblock amplifier is equipped with a 12dB/octave low-pass filter with variable frequency selection from 50 to 200Hz. The low-pass filter is not defeatable.

Bass Boost: The amplifier is equipped with a variable bass boost from 0 to +12dB at 45Hz.

Remote Level Control: The JX250/1D is equipped with an RJ-25 connection for an optional wired RBC-1 Remote Level Control (sold separately) that allows volume level adjustment of the amplifier from the front of your vehicle.

Connections

Power/Ground/Turn-On Terminals: The monoblock amplifier features set-screw terminals for the power, ground, and remote turn-on connections. A 2.5mm hex-wrench is supplied for tightening/loosening the set-screws.

  • Power and Ground: The JL Audio amplifier's set-screw Power and Ground connections are designed to accept 8 to 4 AWG power wire. JL Audio recommends 8 gauge power and ground wires.
  • Remote Turn-On: The JL Audio JX series amplifier's set-screw turn-on lead will accept 18 to 8 AWG  wire. 18-gauge wire is more than adequate for the remote turn-on connection.
Note: The amplifier is not equipped with a fuse. An external 30-amp AFS, AGU, or MAXI fuse (not included) must be installed on the power wire. If a wiring kit is used which includes a fuse with a value other than 30-amps, the original should be replaced with a 30-amp fuse.

Speaker Output Terminals: The JL Audio JX250/1D features four set-screw speaker terminals for an easy parallel subwoofer connection. The monoblock amplifier's four set-screw speaker terminals will accept 16 to 8 AWG speaker wire. A 2.5mm hex-wrench is supplied for tightening/loosening the set-screws.

Preamp Inputs: The monoblock amplifier features one set of stereo RCA input jacks. The amplifier features a dedicated Input Sensitivity gain control for these inputs. These controls are designed to match the input sensitivity of the JX250/1D to the specific signal source that is feeding it. The amplifier's low-level input can be set between 200mV-4V RMS.

Speaker Level Inputs: The JL Audio JX250/1D also accepts speaker level signals, including those from factory systems (without the need for a line-output converter), via the supplied 10" speaker-level harness. The amplifier's high-level input can be set between 2V-10V RMS.

Preamp Outputs: The JX250/1D incorporates a pass-through preamp output sections, so that additional amplifiers can easily be connected to the same signal feeding the monoblock amplifier. The preamp output signal is buffered to prevent noise.

Q
I have Jl250/1 pushing 1 10' woofer how should I set the amp far as frequency and other settings?

It really depends on how much low end you want. I got the 50hz test frequency and followed the setup guide. Once I found my preference I moved on to setting up the remote bass controller (RBC). I set the RBC to 25% and fine tuned the gain on the amp while playing a song that I liked and had some low frequencies. Even after a few days I made more adjustments to the gain but I left the frequency setting on the amp at 80Hz. I get lots of complements on how much bass is present in my car with only 1 JL sub and this "little" amp.

I've got the same amp hooked to a ten. It sounds great. I will say that I use an old iPod and the levels can go up from tune to tune, so I purchased the bass remote to lower or raise the bass. Honestly in my opinion get some good radio reception and tune those dials. You'll know when it feels right.

JL has tutorials for how to do all of this on their website.

that depends on several factors. 1- what are the crossovers set at in your main speaker system 2- are you looking for extreme lows? A good start point is about 120. Be careful with the bass boost. do not over drive the inout stage of the amp

Ok. There are basically 2 adjustments on the amp. The way it sounds is going to be very dependent on the actual subwoofer you are running off of this amp. Look at the "frequency response " of the subwoofer. It will not play frequencies that arent within this range. So a JL 10w1 plays between 25 - 250 hz. In my opinion this speaker will sound best if you set the frequency filter between 125 -150hz . That will allow the sub to play up into the midrange a little. To set the gain - turn on the stereo headunit and play your favorite song. Make sure you have your bass and treble ( or equalizer) set how you like. Turn the volume of the stereo up to 75% max volume. Now, start turning the gain on the amplifier up until the subwoofer starts to sound distorted, then back it off a little bit. Hope this helps

Start at 100hz. I wouldn't go above 120hz but that's just me. As far as the bass boost goes, that depends on your system. I had to turn mine most of the way down to match my system. I'd start with a low bass boost but add it as you need it.

I your Manuel it explaines how to set up the amp with an ohm meter. Disconect your speaker wire and connect them to the ohm meter. Turn your stereo sound to about 1/3 of max volume. Then set your gain on the amp to the ohm specifications in the Manuel. I set my frequency at approximately 80 hertz. From there I set the fine tuning with the stereo. I have a Kenwood sterio that I can set the sub independently.
