Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-404C Center channel speaker

Use the RP-404C center channel as part of a high-impact Klipsch home theater system.

Hybrid horn technology for dynamic performance

Horn technology is one of Klipsch's long-standing hallmarks. Flared openings in the speaker cabinet project sound waves toward your listening area and prevent them from simply spilling out in all directions. This design reduces reflections that can color the sound, and boosts dynamics and efficiency for powerful, "front row" sound that remains crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Klipsch's Tractrix® horn features a circular throat around an advanced titanium diaphragm tweeter that transitions into a square 90º x 90º mouth. This unique shape provides a cleaner, more efficient transition of sound waves into your listening space. The result is a wide listening "sweet spot" with precise placement of instruments and vocals.

A horn that enhances bass, too

Take a look at the back of the RP-404C and you'll find that instead of the conventional round port tube found on many speakers, Klipsch uses a Tractrix horn-shaped opening for smoother, more efficient airflow in and out of the cabinet. The resulting decrease in air turbulence makes for cleaner, more powerful bass with reduced port noise and low-frequency distortion.

Because this speaker is rear-ported, I recommend pulling it away from your wall to give it room to "breathe."

Features

1" Horn-Loaded Tweeter: The Klipsch RP-404C center-channel loudspeaker features a 1" Titanium LTS Vented Tweeter with a Hybrid Tractrix Horn for exceptional high frequency response, detail, and dispersion. Klipsch proprietary Tractrix horn-loaded technology ensures high-frequency energy of the RP-404C center-channel speakers are aimed directly at the listener and reduces unwanted, artificial reverb caused by indirect sound bouncing off walls - meaning you experience the most clear, detailed, lifelike sound possible.

  • Titanium LTS Vented Tweeter: The titanium tweeter diaphragm's light weight yet rigid composition exceeds the performance of aluminum, polymer or silk tweeters. A vented tweeter design reduces standing waves behind the tweeter diaphragm for a smoother high frequency reproduction. Klipsch award-winning Linear Travel Suspension technology leverages a piston motion of the titanium diaphragm that lowers distortion and delivers real-to-life sound. A ceramic magnet housing provides premium performance,
  • Hybrid Tractrix Horn Technology: This redesigned 90°x90° Hybrid Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The Hybrid Tractrix Horn's compressed molded silicon face adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and horn resonance for a smoother frequency response with improved detail - creating a clean and natural sound. Klipsch also utilizes computer modeled phase plugs that act as a mechanical filter to further ensure a smooth, flat frequency response while protecting the tweeter from damage.

Quad 4" Cerametallic Woofers: The RP-404C center-channel loudspeaker utilizes four 4" Klipsch Proprietary Cerametallic woofers. Cerametallic consists of extremely light, rigid materials that can hold shape while being able to deliver lower frequencies with maximum efficiency. The Klipsch Cerametallic cone is matted to a dual-layer, copper-wound voice coil for exceptional conductivity. The 4" woofers are housed in a non-resonating, stamped-steel basket that's secured to a large magnet motor for exceptional efficiency and low distortion.

Rear Tractrix Port: The rear Tractrix port of the RP-404C center-channel loudspeaker is perfectly matched to the cabinet and woofer, creating ideal airflow with minimal distortion and turbulence even at the lowest frequencies. Klipsch Tractrix ports have custom designed inner flares that help reduce air turbulence entering the port. Less turbulent air helps reduce port noise for cleaner, more powerful bass.

MDF Cabinet: The Klipsch RP-404C center-channel speaker features a MDF cabinet with a scratch-resistant, textured wood grain vinyl that seamlessly integrates into almost any room or decor. The enclosure's reinforced MDF construction reduces cabinet vibration for less audible coloration and improved sonic accuracy. The MDF enclosure also features a satin painted baffle with a scratch resistant design for an elegant look without the grille.

Acoustically Transparent Grille: The Klipsch RP-404C center-channel loudspeaker comes with a removable, black cloth grille that is magnetic and acoustically transparent. This strong magnetic grille provides protection and a sleek aesthetic look to compliment your home's decor.

Binding Posts: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series center-channel speaker is fitted with sturdy  binding posts to ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-lugs and bare wire (up to 10AWG). Two plastic caps will need to be removed to use banana plugs.

Placement & Mounting Options: The center channel speaker is designed to place dialog and primary sounds so that they appear to come from the TV or projector screen. The speaker should therefore be centered and placed as close to the screen as possible, preferably directly on top of or below the screen. The center channel speaker comes with four self-adhesive rubber feet to secure the speaker in place and prevent any damage to your stand's or shelf's surface. The rubber feet add approximately 0.125" to the height of each speaker.

Note: There is no included bracket, keyhole slot, or threaded insert to wall-mount the speaker.

Reference Premiere Series: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series utilizes a redesigned hybrid 90°x90° Tractrix Horn, a vented LTS titanium tweeter, Cerametallic woofer construction, and Tractrix geometry port technology for sound that will envelope you and blow you away. The Reference Premiere series by Klipsch consists of a variety of floorstanding, bookshelf, center, and surround speakers (all sold separately). Click on the Accessories Tab to find more Reference Premiere series speakers for your home system.

Optional Powered Sub: For bigger & deeper bass response, pair the Klipsch Reference Premiere series loudspeaker with one of Klipsch's powered subwoofers (sold separately - click on Accessories Tab).

Q
what is the minimum distance this should sit off the wall due to the rear port? I only have an 1"-1.5" available behind it, would I be better off getting a cheaper thinner model?

Remember Great Speakers are the foundation of a Sound System!
rodney  Dec 29, 2020
A
You would be deprived you of a less clearer and richer sound. Remember one of the reasons you bought a Kilpsch is pure sound reproduction. Sound clearance behind will not interfere with forward sound projection!
rodney  Dec 29, 2020
A
I have mine about 1-1/2 inches off the wall with no issues
jonathan  Dec 29, 2020
Q
Can I set this center directly against a wall? My entertainment system is only 13 inches deep, I'm ok with it stick out half a inch but will it be that close to the wall compromise performance?
nick  Nov 30, 2020

A
The speaker has rear-firing ports. Putting the back against the wall will diminish performance. You will be paying for a feature you are not fully experiencing because of aesthetics. Pull the center out from the wall.
michael  Dec 04, 2020
A
Yes it should be no problem
efrem  Dec 04, 2020
A
There's a rearward firing port for sound so if it's against a wall there could be some strange audio distortion happening. I think Klipsch recommends at least a foot of clearance from the wall
kris  Dec 04, 2020
A
You could probably put it close. But there's a large port on the back. I had to leave mine stick out past the front my tv 8 inches cause of my tv mount.
jason  Dec 04, 2020
A
Hey That's just about what ours is set at and it does a great job. Enjoy

Q
Will my AVR-S750H adequately power this speaker at output of 75W? Speaker RMS is 125W. If I run in small mode?
deweypop2104  Aug 06, 2020
3 answers
A
Yes, this is a relatively efficient speaker so it doesn't take as much power to get loud. Since you will run in small mode, your subwoofer is going to be doing some of the work. I believe the 125W RMS you are referring to is the max that the speaker is rated to run at continuously (it should also have a'peak' rating that it can handle in bursts).
stephen  Aug 07, 2020
A
Yes in fact I am using an AVR-S650H and it sounds great!
harry  Aug 06, 2020
A
That receiver will be fine running the speakers at small has nothing to do with the power ratings the speakers should all be set to small and have a crossover applied to them unless you don't have a sub and only listen to 2 channel music
dane  Aug 06, 2020

Can my AVR-S750h adequately power this speaker? My AVR output is 75W. This is rated at 125 RMS.

A
It can power your AVR-S750h somewhat adequately but it essentially is not getting all the sound performance this superb center speaker demands at 75W.
rodney  Aug 06, 2020
A
The RP-404 is a very efficient speaker and should be a good match for an amp with 75W
kip  Aug 06, 2020
A
Should be fine. Less is ok (you don't want your amp pumping out more juice than your speakers can handle). My AVR is 85W and its more than adequate for my 18x20 living room with vaulted ceilings. All depends on how big your room is and how loud yoI want it.
david  Aug 06, 2020
A
Klipsch are super efficient speakers. You should have zero problems playing to moderate to high levels in a small to mid-size room. Unless you have a grand hall sized living room with super high ceiling, it should be fine.
lloyd  Aug 06, 2020

I have the Sony str dn1080 which isn't a high-powered receiver and it is plenty for that center channel to me.

Hey The center Klipsch was a big change for the good from the center speaker that was installed by our AV guy when we built our house. I am very pleased with product and with Crutchfield customer service! C.

Q
Is this a 2 or 2.5 way speaker?
david  Sep 27, 2019
1 answer
A
I found this online... "All 4 speaker klipsch center channels are 2 1/2 way centers where the outer woofers 'taper' their frequency sooner than their inner woofers. This supposedly lessens the effect of horizontal comb filtering associated with all center channels."
michael  Oct 08, 2019
Q
Is this a 2 or 2.5 way speaker?

Judging by the 500hz/ 1500hz crossover I'm going to say 2 way. But I haven't found anything that specifically says that.

Q
Will the RP 500SA support the weight of my television?
rob  Jul 11, 2019
4 answers
A
It would support the weight of your TV, but I would not recommend putting your TV on the center channel speaker. It will likely cause undesirable vibration noise.
todd  Jul 19, 2019
A
Thank you for your question, Rob. The Klipsch RP500SA is a pretty stout speaker, but we do not have any weight bearing specs listed for this speaker. The weight of the TV and the type of base the TV will be sitting, are also things that would need to be taken into consideration. Please chat with an Advisor online, or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. They will be happy to look at your needs, and see if this would be the best recommendation for you.
jessica  Jul 18, 2019 (Staff)
A
I expect that is entirely dependent on the weight and footprint of your television. I can tell you that the speaker box is extremely sturdy and if the feet of my 20-ish lb flat-screen would have fit on it I would not have hesitated to set it on there. One thing though that you might want to consider is "Will my tv begin moving gradually due to the vibration of the speaker?". I'd hate for your tv to gradually skew over time until it fell.
michael  Jul 18, 2019
A
I have a 65" Vizio TV that sits on my center speakers and I haven't seen any damage to the speaker. The TV is quite heavy.
