Bring movies alive in your room

Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers have earned rave reviews from Crutchfield customers for years — especially when it comes to creating an authentic movie theater experience at home. The RP-402S surround speakers are the perfect way to add thrilling sound effects to your new Klipsch surround sound system.

Each speaker features a pair of 4" spun-copper woofers and 1" horn-loaded tweeters that fire in different directions. Position a pair to the side and/or rear of your seats to hear dynamic sound effects that put you right in the middle of the action.

Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-402S surround speakers

Each RP-402S surround speaker house two pairs of woofers and tweeters that fire in different directions for wraparound sound effects.

Hybrid horn technology for dynamic performance

Horn technology is one of Klipsch's long-standing hallmarks. Flared openings in the speaker cabinet project sound waves toward your listening area and prevent them from simply spilling out in all directions. This design reduces reflections that can color the sound, and boosts dynamics and efficiency for powerful, "front row" sound that remains crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Klipsch's Tractrix® horn features a circular throat around an advanced titanium diaphragm tweeter that transitions into a square 90º x 90º mouth. This unique shape provides a cleaner, more efficient transition of sound waves into your listening space. The result is a wide listening "sweet spot" with precise placement of instruments and vocals.

Features

Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST): As the cornerstone of every Klipsch surround speaker, proprietary Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST) provides astounding sonic detail for lifelike, cinematic sound in practically any room; even with less-than-ideal placement configurations. The Klipsch RP-402S delivers precise sonic detail through the careful positioning of two Hybrid Tractrix Horn loaded titanium tweeters and dual 4" Cerametallic woofers. By aligning the two horn tweeters at 90° with respect to each other, along with the dual 4" woofers, the RP-402S smoothly covers a 180° horizontal arc, allowing maximum placement flexibility. This unique Wide Dispersion Surround Technology will produce a smooth, seamless broad distribution of sound for your home theater system.

Two 1" Horn-Loaded Tweeters: The Klipsch RP-402S surround loudspeaker utilizes two 1" Titanium LTS Vented Tweeters with Hybrid Tractrix Horn technology for exceptional high frequency response, detail, and dispersion. Klipsch proprietary Tractrix horn-loaded technology ensures high-frequency energy of the RP-402S surround speakers are aimed directly at the listener and reduces unwanted, artificial reverb caused by indirect sound bouncing off walls - meaning you experience the most clear, detailed, lifelike sound possible.

  • Titanium LTS Vented Tweeters: The titanium tweeter diaphragm's light weight yet rigid composition exceeds the performance of aluminum, polymer or silk tweeters. A vented tweeter design reduces standing waves behind the tweeter diaphragm for a smoother high frequency reproduction. Klipsch award-winning Linear Travel Suspension technology leverages a piston motion of the titanium diaphragm that lowers distortion and delivers real-to-life sound. A ceramic magnet housing provides premium performance,
  • Hybrid Tractrix Horn Technology: This redesigned 90°x90° Hybrid Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The Hybrid Tractrix Horn's compressed molded silicon face adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and horn resonance for a smoother frequency response with improved detail - creating a clean and natural sound. Klipsch also utilizes computer modeled phase plugs that act as a mechanical filter to further ensure a smooth, flat frequency response while protecting the tweeter from damage.

Dual 4" Cerametallic Woofers: The RP-402S surround loudspeaker houses dual 4" Klipsch Proprietary Cerametallic woofers. Cerametallic consists of extremely light, rigid materials that can hold shape while being able to deliver lower frequencies with maximum efficiency. The Klipsch Cerametallic cone is matted to a dual-layer, copper-wound voice coil for exceptional conductivity. The 4" woofer is housed in a non-resonating, stamped-steel basket that's secured to a large magnet motor for exceptional efficiency and low distortion.

MDF Cabinet: The Klipsch RP-402S surround speaker features a MDF cabinet with a scratch-resistant, textured wood grain vinyl that seamlessly integrates into almost any room or decor. The enclosure's reinforced MDF construction reduces cabinet vibration for less audible coloration and improved sonic accuracy.

Acoustically Transparent Grille: The Klipsch RP-402S surround loudspeaker comes with a removable, black cloth grille that is magnetic and acoustically transparent. This strong magnetic grille provides protection and a sleek aesthetic look to compliment your home's decor.

Binding Posts: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series surround speaker is fitted with sturdy  binding posts to ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-lugs and bare wire (up to 10AWG). Two plastic caps will need to be removed to use banana plugs.

Placement & Mounting Options: The Klipsch WDST surround speakers should be placed approximately 2' above the listening position. Typically this will be about 5'-7' above the floor. The surround speakers should be placed on the walls directly adjacent to the listening position. Another option would be on the wall behind the listening position. The Klipsch RP-402S can be simply placed on a flat surface or wall mounted.

  • Stand Mount: The Klipsch surround speaker can be placed on a speaker stand, bookshelf, table, or other flat surface.
  • Wall Mount: The RP-402S features a single keyhole slot on the back of the cabinet for wall-mounting the speaker without any additional wall-mount bracket (mounting screws not supplied). The included rubber pads attach to the back of the speaker to keep the speaker aligned with your wall and to prevent any wall damage

Reference Premiere Series: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series utilizes a redesigned hybrid 90°x90° Tractrix Horn, a vented LTS titanium tweeter, Cerametallic woofer construction, and Tractrix geometry port technology for sound that will envelope you and blow you away. The Reference Premiere series by Klipsch consists of a variety of floorstanding, bookshelf, center, and surround speakers (all sold separately). Click on the Accessories Tab to find more Reference Premiere series speakers for your home system.

Optional Powered Sub: For bigger & deeper bass response, pair the Klipsch Reference Premiere series loudspeaker with one of Klipsch's powered subwoofers (sold separately - click on Accessories Tab).

Customer Q&A

Q
what is the shipping weight of these speakers? thank you
d  Mar 11, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey Darius, so each speaker weighs 13lbs. So for a pair plus packaging, I would guess no more than 29lbs.
red  Mar 11, 2024 (Staff)
Q
I just bought a pair of these. Are they used/refurbished? It says nothing anywhere about them being used speakers.

Douglas, I got them Brand New. Such a Deal! It will say if they are Used. Very Good with Crutchfield!

Q
Can you use these speakers for Dolby Atmos configurations?
kevin  Apr 17, 2021

A
I use these speakers as my side and rear speakers. For Dolby ATMOS elevation front and rear I use R-41SA DOLBY ATMOS® ELEVATION SPEAKERS. You could use the RP-402S as elevation speakers but you may loose the 3D effect.
charles  Apr 17, 2021
A
no, is only surround (left-right) for Dolby atmos RP500SA this is I have.
angel luis  Apr 17, 2021
A
I believe so. That would depend more on your receiver and number of speakers I believe.
andrew  Apr 17, 2021
Q
Is there a speaker mount that works with a keyhole? The placement of this speaker on one side of my room would need a speaker mount versus mounting to the wall.

Yes, there is a Keyhole Mount in the Back for Wall Mounting. Gordon.
gordon e.  Feb 21, 2021

Hi. I try to answer these Questions; Crutchfield is Outstanding. There is a Speaker Mount on the Back for the Wall. My Speakers are Black. Gordon.
gordon e.  Feb 19, 2021
A
Mine hang on the wall keyhole fashion. I used a wall anchor with the screwhead sticking out.
john  Feb 18, 2021
A
I used the Omni Mount 15.0w mount and it screws into the preset on the back of the speakers. You have to mount this to the wall and then the speaker attached to it.
andrew  Feb 18, 2021

I have a 510 watt av receiver rx-v485 will that handle all I push the volume?

I think you should be O.K. I have done very well with Crutchfield. I have a 185 W 7.2 Channel Denon driving mine.
gordon e.  Dec 16, 2020
A
I have no idea as I only have 200 wats and it is more than enough
cleve  Dec 16, 2020
A
Might be a lot. They had handled Denon 185 W 7.2 Channel fine. Gordo
gordon e.  Dec 16, 2020
A
Assuming you are going to use these as your surround speaker, your surround channels push 95 watts per the owners manual. These speakers are rated at 75 watts. So you may overdrive the speakers at higher volume. If it were me I would size up to a speaker that is designed to handle more power. The RP502's handle 100 watts.
charles  Dec 15, 2020
A
Yes, however I would use the speakers as surround sound speakers not main speaker.
ricardo daniel  Dec 15, 2020

Its for stereo or for a 5.1 or 7.1 surround system
mike  Aug 11, 2020
A
Its for surround sound theater
ricardo daniel  Aug 11, 2020
A
This speaker is for a single channel. You would need a pair for stereo. I am using mine as surround speakers.
charles  Aug 11, 2020
A
Those are my side surrounds.
tim  Aug 11, 2020
Q
So dumb question, but could you use these speakers as your L/R front speakers? Or are they truly meant as rear surrounds? I ask because wondering what a surround would would sound like with 4 of these as your fronts and rears.
matt  May 27, 2020
5 answers
A
I use them as L/R with a subwoofer in a stereo system. I bought them for the increased dispersion created by angled speakers. The stereo separation is retained.
john  Feb 18, 2021
A
truly for rear surround
ricardo daniel  Aug 11, 2020
A
No, they are specifically designed for side or rear channels. The dipole design disperses the sound, which you don't want the front channels to do. There are matching front speakers in the Klipsch line that work well with these.
ronald  Jun 07, 2020
A
I am not sure how they would sound as front speakers because I use them for my ATMOS speakers. Since there is not a whole lot of sound coming from them being used this way , I don't really know the sound quality. I guess if your receiver is within the power rating of the speaker, you have a sub-woofer, and you are not expecting huge sound stage, they might work out ok. Sorry I could not be of more help.
larry  Jun 05, 2020
A
I would not recommend them as front speakers. I bought them for surround or atmos speakers and do the work well.
maria del rayo  Jun 04, 2020
Q
Do these speakers have a threaded hole on the base of the speaker to mount on a stand? I know there is one on the back but just wondering if one is on the base?

A
These only have keyhole type openings in the back to hang them.
kathleen  Feb 21, 2020
A
No they don't have anything on the bottom. They are strictly made for wall mounting.
ronald  Feb 19, 2020
A
no, just on the back.
larry  Feb 19, 2020
A
They do not.
maria del rayo  Feb 18, 2020

I have wall mounted them. They sound and function very well.
gaurav  Nov 07, 2019
Q
I would be mounting these high on my wall / near the ceiling (8'). What's my best bet to mount them - ceiling or wall, and what kind of bracketry would be best?
geof  May 06, 2019
5 answers
A
Wall. All you need are screws into wall studs. You can use either one or two screws for each. I used one screw. I had lighter rear speakers in wall mounts but they had a 10-pound limit. I read the speaker manual and it said screws or nails so I went with a screw.. Just be sure you have a screwdriver with added torque. RJD.
richard j.  May 07, 2019
A
I mounted mine on the wall about 5 in from the ceiling with a wall anchor with a 50 pound capacity
tracy  May 06, 2019
A
Hello, These speakers are best at ear level on the wall. Great speakers!!
eddie  May 06, 2019
A
On the wall, perhaps about 1 foot above your listening position. They supply surround sound not direct sound. If using only one position, the best is rear surround. If 2 pair of speakers, back and side.
gregory  May 06, 2019
A
I mounted mine with a heavy drywall screw. The wall mounted position was ideal for me, I'm using them as surrounds. High on the ceiling might work for you, you have to place is different locations to see what works for you. They are great sounding speakers.
thomas  May 06, 2019

Using the keyhole attachment provided on the back along with the also provided has worked wonderfully.
