Built-in Wi-Fi networking, Bluetooth streaming, and a USB port let you get more of your favorite digital music sources into the act.

Dial in the sound for your space

Yamaha's YPAO speaker calibration system takes acoustic measurements and accounts for any obstacles in your room to optimize the R-N803's sound. We've seen this useful feature become pretty common among home theater receivers, but it's a rare plus in the stereo category.

Easy wireless music listening

Yamaha's flexible MusicCast multi-room system lets you enjoy all your music sources in other rooms. That includes Bluetooth streams or components connected to the R-N803's analog inputs. Just add compatible speakers and components to other areas of your home where you want to hear your music. Control your whole-house system using Yamaha's colorful and intuitive MusicCast app on your phone or tablet.

ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology): The legendary Yamaha Hi-Fi design concept ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) combines a meticulously symmetrical left/right circuit layout and signal directness (straightest, shortest signal paths) with a low-vibration chassis of high rigidity. The chassis is equipped with the special resin frame "Art Base" that absorbs and blocks unnecessary vibration. The result is sonic purity and an accurate stereo image of your music.

Parallel Push-Pull Amplifier: The power amp block adopts a symmetrical and direct circuit layout based on the ToP-ART concept, featuring a parallel push-pull structure using a total of eight bipolar-type power transistors (four each, on left and right) as its output terminals. And by minimizing the lengths of the audio signal paths in the circuit design, Yamaha lowered impedance to achieve superb drive power with a maximum output of 100 watts of power per channel (at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.019% THD).

SABRE 192kHz/24-Bit DAC: The R-N803 uses the renowned SABRE 9006AS 192 kHz/24-bit DAC (from ESS technology) to deliver superior signal-to-noise ratio performance. Combined with the Yamaha original network module, the unit thoroughly draws out all the sonic merits of high-resolution sound sources, effectively reproducing even the subtle ambience of concert halls and delicate expressive nuances in the sound.

YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer): The R-N803 is equipped with the Yamaha Parametric room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO), a famed technology used in Yamaha AV receivers. YPAO and the included microphone measure the shape of the room, the material of the wall and the position of the speaker, then automatically adjusts the sound to create the ideal response and sonic quality. The unit also features other advanced YPAO functions, including YPAO - Reflected Sound Control, which actively corrects the important early reflection sounds that greatly influence sound quality, and YPAO Volume, which applies exceptionally high-precision EQ (equalization), with 192 kHz/64-bit operation. Utilizing YPAO, you can create an ideal listening environment right in your home, just like that of a professional audio listening room.

Analog Inputs & Output (including Phono): The Yamaha network receiver features five stereo analog RCA inputs (including a Phono input). The Phono (MM) input is used for connecting a turntable and listening to your vinyl records. Input 2 and 3 also have dedicated stereo line outputs associated with them.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The R-N803 is equipped for digital audio input, with both optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) terminals. The two optical inputs are for receiving audio from a TV and Satellite/Cable box, while the two coaxial inputs are used for receiving audio from a Blu-ray Disc player and CD player. Both digital inputs supports 2ch PCM (32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192 kHz).

Note: The digital inputs are not compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or other multichannel audio formats.

A/B Speaker Terminals: The R-N803 is fitted with A/B speaker terminals so you can power up to two pair of speakers. The speaker selector switch on the front-panel of the receiver makes it easy to switch between speaker outputs, allowing you to hear the sound from one speaker pair (A or B) or from both speaker pairs (A+B). In addition, compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A/B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel). The eight binding-post speaker terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only). You can select 8 ohms or 4 ohms in the menu depending on your speaker application.

Subwoofer Output: The network stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered sub. There is no crossover setting in the receiver; you will need to use the low-pass crossover in your powered sub.

Headphone Jack: The Yamaha R-N803 is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphones, so you can listen to your music privately. Connecting a set of headphones automatically mutes the receiver's speaker outputs.

Tone Control w/ Loudness Function: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -10dB to +10dB in 0.5 dB increments. You can also balance your connected speakers left to right. A Loudness function retains full tonal range at any volume level, thus compensating for the human ears' loss of sensitivity to high and low frequency ranges at low volume levels.

Pure Direct Mode: Pure Direct mode enables the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp and the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation, for the purest sound quality.

Volume Setup: You can set the stereo receiver's maximum volume from 1-99 (1 step increments) to prevent excessive loudness. You can also set the receiver's initial volume to 1-99 (1 step increments), Off, Mute, or Max when the unit is turned on.

  • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
  • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.

Using the MusicCast app, you can select the wired input and link multiple MusicCast devices for playback, allowing you to hear sound from Echo Dot throughout your home.
Note: You will need an Alexa-enabled device (Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap, or Echo Show - all sold separately) to operate certain functions of your MusicCast products via voice-command. The MusicCast components and the Alexa-enabled devices must be on the same network.
Convenience Features

IR Remote: The Yamaha R-N803 comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the network stereo receiver

Front-Panel Display: The R-N803 network receiver features a front-panel display to indicate audio settings, source input, station identification, and song/artist information. You can adjust the brightness of the front-panel display. This unit does not offer an on-screen display.

Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, AIFF, and ALAC music files via DLNA.

Q
I need to connect a Power Amp to my Yamaha Rn 803. . The spec sheet says I can do so but I can't find any " Pre Out " slot in the back . So how do I connect the Power Amp to my RN 803?
rakbkk  Jun 14, 2022

A
Greetings Rakbkk, and thank you for your question. Yes technically you can connect an amplifier, but this receiver is a bit different. It does not have a pre out which would send out all the audio from the RN 803 to your amplifier. What the receiver has is line outs 2, and 3, if you look closely those outputs also as associated with an input 2, and 3. If the amplifier is connected to lets say line out 2, its only going to send a signal from the line 2 input. Nothing else. Great question.

Probably. We use it for Pandora and Sirius XM and it works flawlessly.
scott e  Sep 03, 2021

Yes, this Yamaha does support Amazon's music app. I have an iphone 10 and according to Amazon the phone is capable of playing 24bit/48khz content material. If you are familiar with Amazon's app, their content comes as Ultra HD, HD or standard. Most material plays back at the highest levels. That is, if the track is 24bit/96khz (ultra hd) my phone/receiver plays back at 24bit/48khz level. If the track is 16bit/44.1khz (hd), it usually plays back at 16bit/44.1khz level. Sometimes a track that is ultra hd plays back at hd level and on rare occasions you get a playback at "standard" which is only ok (sometimes with distortion). Overall, the playback at ultra hd and hd level is very good, almost cd quality. Amazon's upgrade is fairly recent and 95% of the content is at the highest levels with high playback levels, too. Only a few months ago many ultra hd and hd tracks played back at "standard", but not anymore.

I have two sets of speakers, 4 ohms and 8 ohms. Is there a problem connecting them to the a and b outputs?
claude  Aug 19, 2021

A
Hey Claude - Be sure to check on the power that your Yamaha R-N803 can push to insure that it can support the combination of speakers you want to use. I planned to run two sets of speakers, but purchased a pair of Martin Logan Motion 60XT tower speakers and they are all I need for my setup in the den. Remember, the lower the ohms, the more power it takes to push. I love my Yamaha R-N803 and it pushes my speakers just fine. These speakers are the best I've ever heard. My system doesn't need four speakers, but I have a pair of Bose 100 shelf speakers to add a little accent if I want a sound presence form my entertainment cabinet.

I have a set of six ohm speakers and a set of four ohm speakers and have them both hooked up with no problems.
juanita  Aug 21, 2021

The minimum impedance for this receiver is 4 ohms so there should be zero problem running both sets of speakers as they fall within the parameters.

Can I add a power amp to the R-N803?
patrick  Jul 30, 2021

I don't have one because 145 watts is enough for my room but Crutchfield support knows more about this than I do . There should be able to answer this for you. I checked the manual and it didn't mention anything about an additional power amp but there are a couple of extra jacks in the back for connecting analog audio components.

It might work. We have a similar set-up with the router downstairs and the Yamaha upstairs. But we have a mesh wi-fi system which increases coverage throughout the house, but we also have an ethernet cable between router and Yamaha.

I cannot speak to the difference in floors and all the usual transmission variability that could be issues depending on location. Bu I will say that I use my R-N803 only wirelessly, with the router several rooms over on the same floor, and have never had a problem.

Can the R-N803 provide multiple zones? I have two wired speakers in the kitchen, two wired speakers in the living room, and two wired speakers outside. Does the receiver allow me to control sound only to the living room and not the other two zones or will all six speakers be one zone? Thanks, Will

A
I also drive three zones of wired speakers (2 speakers per zone). I purchased a Niles SS-4 speaker selector switch. Each zone has its own volume control which is wired in between the Niles and the speakers.
steve  Mar 18, 2021
A
You can have two zones. I have one in my man cave and another out at the pool. They both will play the same source though but you can turn either zone on or off.
derek  Mar 17, 2021
A
The unit can send sound to 2 sets of speakers, A and B. You cannot control the volumes separately. I'm order to do that you either need a speaker selector, such as one of the Niles products, or a second receiver. I use the MusicCast system to control sound in several rooms with a separate receiver in each location.
carlos  Mar 17, 2021
A
I have 2 sets of speakers connected to my Yamaha. Sound is good with both sets. But I don't see a place on the panel to connect another set of speakers -- there are 8 terminals only, and you'd need four more, unless it's OK to piggyback other speaker wires with used terminals, and I bet it isn't OK. You can shut one set of speakers off, but volume control is the same for both sets, as far as I know.
robert  Mar 16, 2021
A
This is a modern take on the old school receiver unit. It has two separate speaker outputs (A/B) driving 4 speakers total. No provision is made for controlling them beyond that. I use mine A to drive the mains and B to the high power input on my subwoofers, so I can cut them out if I want to. You could run another set of speakers wherever you want on the B channel, but that's it.

Q
Is this unit compatible with 220V outlet?
roman  Feb 06, 2021
3 answers
A
My owner's manual says "Use this unit with the power supply voltage printed on it." (page iii.) I looked at the back of my amp and it says "120 volts". So, unless your amp says something different, I don't think you should use anything but 120 volts.
robert  Feb 07, 2021
A
Hi Roman. On page 14 of the owner's manual is mentioned (and illustrated) a voltage selector switch- 110-120/ 220-240, to the left of the power cord input. However this is present on "general models only". There are two models- the 803 and the "Europe version" 803D. However, neither of these appears to feature the voltage selector switch. I believe if you want the 220v option, you'll have to order the 803D or try to track down the mysterious "general model". The standard American or Europe versions seem to be hard-wired for 120 or 220 respectively, perhaps as a safety precaution(?).

I have a Yamaha AV receiver with pure direct and I prefer this mode for listening to music. One problem is you need to select it (never remembers that mode). For the r-n803, if I set the Pure Direct mode and shut off the receiver , will it be on by default when I turn the receiver back on?
dougyamaha  Dec 25, 2020
2 answers
A
There are 2 ways that it will remember 'Pure Direct' when not in use. 1. Using Musicast you need to have the unit set to Network Reedy mode. That means the unit is always on standby. In this mode with 'Pure Direct' engaged, every time you power the unit from your handheld device, the Pure Direct will be engaged. 2. The same goes for using the remote control, with Pure Direct engaged and the unit in standby mode, powering it up from the remote preserves the Pure Direct mode. The basic lesson here is that in standby mode, Pure Direct stays engaged. But, it you use the main power switch to turn if on and off, Pure Direct will not stay engaged between power off sessions.
john  Dec 28, 2020
A
YES!! If you have the Pure Direct mode selected it will stay that way until you take it off. This goes for both putting the R-N803 asleep or actually physically turning it off. When you return it will still be in Pure Direct if it was on when you put the receiver asleep or turned it off.

I was asked to try to help. I do not know the JBL's. My Yamaha 803 drives two vintage ADS L1090 towers. Before, I powered them with a vintage NAD that was conservatively rated at 60W a side with a lot of headroom. The Yamaha provides a nice sound. Maybe not as warm and 'vintage' but clearer, with a very evident soundstage in a very large room, with power to spare. Very satisfied.

Yes. The Yamaha Multicast app (you need a smartphone) is the interface that lets you select stations based on genre as well as podcasts. You can also just stream via Airplay or Bluetooth from your favorite device. It also has several of the streaming services- Pandora, Deezer, Spotify, etc. as actual "source" options that you also use your iPhone with those apps to select and play direct. It sounds SWEET. This receiver has just blown me away. Practically noise free, crystal clear. Watch out, it sounds so good, you'll end up buying more accessories- turntable, new speakers, etc. Best audio purchase I've made in 30 years.

The quality of the DAC in the Yamaha R-N803 is great, however we don't know the quality of the soundcard in your PC so this is tough to determine. In this case you may have to do a comparison between your PC and the Yamaha to figure out what sounds best.

I have a Yamaha Rn-803 receiver and have 4 speakers connected. 2 Mains in the A Channel and another set of bookshelfs connected to the B channel, While running both channels with 4 speakers, should I change the impedance on the receiver to 4OHMS to handle the load of all 4 speakers? I'd actually change the impedance and see how it sounds. Great question but unnecessary to Shane impedance. Trust your ears. Best, Ed
edward  Aug 19, 2020

No. Do not change unless your speakers are 4 ohm speakers. If you are running 8 ohm speakers on both A&B, leave on 8 ohm. You also should not mix and match 4 and 8 ohm speakers. If powering 4 ohm speakers with amp set on 8 ohm it can overheat.

It did but now as of 5-11-2020 it seems I've lost a channel. On channel A I get great sound but channel B all I'm getting is tweeter sound. I'm going to switch speakers around and see if its the speaker or the amp. I've tried contacting crutchfield and they have not responded.
michael  May 23, 2020
A
The advisors at Crutchfield are way more qualified than I am to answer your specific technical question. But over the years (~30) my A (Bose 901s) and B (Bose bookshelf + woofer) setup have been run by first Sony then Panasonic receivers. Both receivers suffered distortion at high volume and cutting out at low volume especially when driving A+B. The Yamaha R-N803 is such a refreshingly pure sound at any volume (no more need for a graphic equalizer on my 901s) that I'm now inclined to run only the speakers where I want to listen, A OR B but not both. This receiver has been a great upgrade for me, worth every penny!

I am a bit confused by the difference between subwoofer instructions. One source says amp can NOT adjust subwoofer, while other says it can (and adjusted through MusicCast app). Which is correct? Website Details page https://
www.crutchfield.com/p_022RN803/Yamaha-R-N803.html Subwoofer Output: The network stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered sub. There is no crossover setting in the receiver; you will need to use the low-pass crossover in your powered sub. But. YPAO Set-Up (p.42 owner's manual) says: Turn on the subwoofer and set the volume to half. If the crossover frequency is adjustable, set it to maximum.
matt  Sep 02, 2019

The crossover adjustment the manual is referring to is the on the subwoofer itself. There is no crossover built in to the receiver, and you will need to use the powered subwoofer's crossover settings. Those instructions are for when you are using the YPAO calibration software. You set the subwoofer's crossover all the way up, so that the receiver can send the right range of sound to it for calibration. Definitive Tech recommends one not use the automated setup of an amp/receiver with their 9000 series due to the use of powered subs. Does this mean I shouldnâ??t use Yamahaâ??s YPAO optimization with these speakers?
james  Mar 11, 2019
2 answers
A
The tower speakers in that series have a built in powered subwoofer with its own room equalization (the "Intelligent Bass Control"). I would agree with their recommendation and not use the Yahmaha's EQ, as you don't want two different active EQ systems controlling the speaker. The EQ systems could "fight" with each other and yield very peculiar results. Also, the Definative bass EQ is focused on corrrecting for the speaker/room interaction, so should yield more even bass throughout your room, while the Yamaha EQ optimized for only one spot where you had the measurement microphone when you set the system up.
robert  Mar 22, 2019
A
The YPAO test produces useful information like if you connected the speaker wire correctly, if you have a tweeter that is failing, if you have a crossover that is failing, etc. I never used YPAO to "tune" the sound, just as a diagnosis tool.

I don't have a list of repair places, but I do have a technical support number for Yamaha and they should be able to help you find a repair shop. The support number is 800-292-2982 My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

As of May 2020 it still does not, disappointing. I probably wouldn't have purchased if I had known.

Good morning, and thank you for the question. I am sorry that it has taken some time to get back to you. I am not quite sure if it supports AirPlay 2. I am still streaming my phone and the receiver reads AirPlay. I am very happy with the receiver. Hopefully, the Crutchfield staff can help you a bit more. Take care.
john  Dec 09, 2018

I don't know for sure, but since it supports airplay, I assume that if your iPhone or PC support airplay 2, then the receiver would play whatever the router sends it. I think at most it might need a firmware upgrade.
randy  Dec 05, 2018
A
Actually I don't think it is supported, but the Firmware of the R-N803 can be upgraded, so I guess Yamaha is looking to support this in the future and can be included within upgrade.
francisco  Dec 05, 2018
A
No, the last firmware update does not support AirPlay2 and there probably won't be support in the future because the R-N802 does not support 5GHz WiFi.

Q
Someone reviewing this mentioned that the sound is flat and lifeless with this receiver; does that mean that the "clean and crisp" terms others used to describe the sound could be interpreted as "technically correct, clear and accurate," but not "lively, multilayered, and having a sound that puts you in the music or the band/artist in the room with you?" Is the sound full and vibrant? This is a very important aspect of my overall experience.

Flat and Lifeless might be an overstatement. I returned mine because it just didn't have much punch. I know those are just subjective terms to sift through. I think the return policy allows you to judge for yourself.

This Yamaha receiver sounds pretty good to me. I've owned this receiver for a year now and I am pleased.

I've had the Rn803 for a year and am very happy with in. Virtually all the music I listen to is streamed from Spotify and do not know of a better receiver for streaming music. The sound is NOT, in my opinion, flat and lifeless. Does the reviewer say what receiver he/she thinks is superior? If so, I'm confident you'll a negative review on it.

Q
Are Yamaha N803 line outs fixed or they work like pre-outs, i.e. are controlled by volume and EQ?

The line outs are fixed. They are NOT affected by volume or the units tone controls.

A
I find it difficult to understand the question. I've always been under the impression that all line in/out are preamps regardless of equipment. Am I wrong?

I've got an RN303 and it's got a pretty noticeable hiss coming out of the headphone amp at all levels except zero. Can hear it in speakers too. Does this receiver also do this?

Sorry to hear that! The Yamaha R-N803 is designed to produce superior sound quality with lower noise and distortion than the R-N303, so I wouldn't expect you to encounter the same issues. For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat.

A
No. Your RN-303 shouldn't be doing this either so, you may want to contact our tech support department for help troubleshooting the issue. You'll find their toll-free number printed on your invoice. If you do not have your order number or invoice, you can contact our Customer Support department by dialing: 800-955-9091. They can provide you with your order information and transfer you onto our tech support department for assistance.

Q
The Yamaha R-7N803 USB can be used with 2TB portable hard disk?
clayton  Aug 09, 2018
2 answers
A
A USB 2.0/3.0 2TB (or larger) external hard drive with an AC adapter for power and one primary partition with a FAT32 format can be used to playback WAV, MP3, WMA, MPEG-4 AAC, FLAC. ALAC, AIFF AND DSD music files. NTFS formatted drives are not recognized.
richard  Aug 15, 2018
A
The manual has pretty clear info on connecting a drive as NAS, so 2TB *if properly configured as a server* should be no problem. Can also do by connecting the 2TB to a PC and using Windows Media Server. Also it *can* connect a USB drive but whether it will support 2TB is unknown by me.

Q
How do your setup for streaming spotify directly from the receiver? I got tidal, pandora, and deezer to stream easily but when i try and setup spotify using the musicast app, it asks me to start Spotify on the device i am running musicast on (ipda), and the select the device to play to...this means its streaming from spotify to my phone and then to the receiver doesn't it? None of the other three streaming music services require this.
michael  Jul 02, 2018

It acts more like a remote control for the receiver to you wifi. You can start the streaming from your iPad and turn it off if you like and it works fine. I actually like this setup as you can see the playlist and change music pretty easily.

Dude, I am so tech illiterate! I really like the performance of my Yamaha, but I'm so old school, it's only CDs for me. Sorry.
bradley james  Jul 07, 2018
A
Yes, you must have the Spotify app on your mobile device. No, that does not mean your mobile device is downloading the music and then pushing it to the receiver. This is not how it works. That would be the case if you don't have Spotify on your receiver and you stream it from the mobile device to your receiver via Bluetooth. What happens is your mobile device where the Spotify app runs only acts as a remote control. The receiver itself is streaming the music directly from the Internet.

Sort of. Currently, you can tie in via Bluetooth. So there's limits to what you can do. Yamaha states that in the next couple weeks there will be a software update, and then they'll be full integration

Q
Will this unit handle high res streaming bit rates from Tidal, or does it down-convert bit rates to something less?
jeffrey  Dec 28, 2017

A
Hi Jeffrey- the R-N803 provides the maximal bit rate provided by its very able ESS Sabre, but in a multi-room set-up, this is only available in room 1. In other rooms, it will down convert.

Q
Hello. I am currently a subscriber to Tidal Hi-Fi. Is there a way I can stream Tidal to the Yamaha R-N803 Stereo Network Receiver using my home wifi and simply using using the Tidal app on my laptop PC? I'd use Yamaha's Music Cast except that I would prefer to use my lap top and I don't think Yamaha has developed a windows based Music Cast controller. Thank You in advance.

The receiver's built-in MusicCast capability does support Tidal but you will need to use the MusicCast APP (for iOS and Android) to control the service. You cannot transmit Tidal from your Laptop to the receiver wirelessly.
