About the Fujifilm FinePix XP140

Eric A.

Vacation-ready

The Fujifilm FinePix XP140 would come in really handy in just about any situation, but I daydream about taking it on a weeklong vacation. It's compact, rugged, waterproof, and offers tons of useful features that can help snapshots become art. It's dust- and sand-proof, and literally has a shooting mode called Beach. When you take a dip to cool off, take it with you, and use Underwater mode to capture a whole new world. That's just the start of what this camera can do.

Versatile shooting options

The XP140 features target-finding autofocus with face and eye detection that helps you take great portraits, and optical image stabilization that keeps photos from coming out blurry. If you're looking to record action, you can shoot up to 15 frames per second in burst mode, use video slow motion, or make a time-lapse sequence. Heck, you can make your own epic 4K movie.

Lots of ways to share

The camera sports a USB port for connecting to your computer, and an HDMI port for displaying photos and videos on a compatible TV. If you want to go straight to social media, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in.

Features

Overview: The Fujifilm FinePix XP140 is a rugged camera that is designed to withstand all of your family's adventures. The camera is waterproof, shockproof, freeze-proof, and dust-proof, so you can take it wherever you want without worry. The XP140 comes with a rechargeable battery, AC charging adapter, USB cable, and a 16 GB SDHC memory card.

5x Zoom Lens: The camera is equipped with an F3.9-4.9 Fujinon lens with a 5x optical zoom. It has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28-140mm. Combined with the intelligent digital zoom of approximately 2x, the total zoom is 10x.

LCD Monitor: The XP140 has a 3.0" color LCD monitor featuring approximately 920,000 dots and approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode.

Rugged Build Quality: The XP140 features a rugged build quality that meets standards for water, dust, and shock resistance (through Fujifilm's in-house testing). It has a specially sealed chassis, including a locking battery compartment, that gives it a IPX8 water resistance rating (to 82 feet), and an IP6X dust resistance rating. Its rugged, reinforced body is shockproof, withstanding drops up to 5.9 feet (MIL-STD-810F-516.5 standard). The camera can also freeze-proof down to 14°F.

Image Sensor: The FinePix XP140 features a 1/2.3-inch CMOS image sensor with 16.4-million effective pixels.

Recording Media: Still images and movies can be recorded onto SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. The XP140 also has an internal memory of approximately 90 MB to allow you to store a few extra images in case your memory card is full. A card with an UHS speed class of 3 or better is recommended when shooting 4K movies or burst photography. A 16 GB Class 10/UHS-I-compatible SDHC card is included.

Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: You can wirelessly connect your camera to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), you can view or transfer photos from your camera on your device. You can also operate the camera remotely from your smart device, or send photos to an Instax SHARE printer for instant prints. The camera can communicate with a smartphone, tablet, or computer via Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n). A dedicated button on the back of the camera lets you easily pair the camera to your device. Using Fujifilm PC AutoSave software (free download), you can connect to your computer via Wi-Fi for saving images. For smartphones and tablets, you'll need the Fujifilm Camera Remote app, available for iPhone/iPad/iPod touch (iOS 10.0 or later), and Android devices (running Android 4.0 and up). For devices using Android 6.0 or later, you can transfer location information from your device to the camera to tag your images.

Still Image Quality: The FinePix XP140 records still images in JPEG format in three sizes (Large, Medium, and Small) in four aspect ratios (4:3, 16:9, 3:2, and 1:1). You can set the image quality to Fine (low compression) or Normal (high compression). The image sizes for each aspect ratio are as follows:

Image Size 4:3 3:2 16:9 1:1
Large 4608 x 3456 4608 x 3072 4608 x 2592 3456 x 3456

  • Large: 5760 x 1632 (vertical); 5760 x 1088 (horizontal)
  • Medium: 3840 x 1632 (vertical); 3840 x 1088 (horizontal)

Movies: The XP140 can record 4K and high definition movies in MOV format (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) with pseudo-stereo Linear PCM audio. The following options are available:

    • 1.6x: Record 100p, Playback 60p
    • 2x: Record 100p, Playback 50p
    • 3.3x: Record 100p, Playback 30p
    • 4x: Record 100p, Playback 25p

Shooting Modes: You can set the camera to suit your level and style of photography. The shooting mode choices include: Advanced SR Auto, Program AE, Multiple Exposure, Portrait, Portrait Enhancer, Landscape, Advanced Filter, Panorama, Sport, Night, Night (Tripod), Fireworks, Sunset, Snow, Beach, Underwater, Party, Flower, Text, and CALS.

CALS: CALS is a setting for taking pictures at the size and image quality settings suitable for submission under Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism guidelines. The image size is 1280 x 960, in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Advanced Filter: The camera offers 17 Advanced Filters for making creative photos. You can preview the filter effects on the LCD monitor. The available Advanced Filters include: Toy Camera, Pop Color, High-Key, Low-Key, Fish-eye, Dynamic Tone, Miniature, Cross Screen, Rich & Fine, Monochrome, Partial Color (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple), and Soft Focus.

Intelligent Face Detection: When Face Detection is On, the camera automatically detects human faces anywhere in the frame and sets the focus and exposure for shots that emphasize portrait subjects. This mode will prevent the camera from focusing on the background when taking group portraits or self portraits. Intelligent Face Detection let you choose whether the camera detects and focuses on eyes (left priority, right priority, or auto).

Image Stabilization: When shooting in a poorly lit area, any degree of camera shake can cause blurry pictures. In this case, sensor-shift Image Stabilization can be activated to reduce the effect of the camera shake. You can choose whether the image stabilization is performed at all times (Continuous) when the camera is in the shooting mode, or only when the shutter button is pressed halfway (Shooting Only). In either mode, you can select "+Motion" to adjust the shutter speed to reduce motion blur when moving objects are detected. Image Stabilization can be turned off when using a tripod.

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity manually or automatically. Manually, you can set it between ISO 100 and ISO 12800. ISO Auto settings will adjust the sensitivity settings according to the shooting conditions. You can select Auto, Auto (400), Auto (800), and Auto (1600) with the value in parentheses the maximum limit.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, and Incandescent light. There is also an underwater setting to reduce the blue cast typically associated with underwater lighting.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps.

Continuous Shooting: You can capture motion in a series of pictures using the Continuous Shooting mode. In Continuous Mode, you can take pictures at the selected frame rate (High, Middle, or Low) while the shutter button is pressed. The Continuous Shooting Mode options include:

Mode Frame Rate Max. Frames per burst
High 10 fps 6
Medium 5 fps 10
Low 3 fps Until storage is full

4K Burst: In 4K Burst, the camera shoots a series of 4K pictures (3840 x 2160) at 15 frames per second, allowing you to choose which shots to save. During 4K Burst mode, the picture angle is reduced. A memory card with a UHS speed class of 3 or better is recommended.

Self-timer: The camera can be set to take photos after a 10-second or 2-second delay. The 10-second delay allows the photographer to get in the photo, while the 2-second delay is best to reduce camera shake. Other self-timer options include:

  • Face Auto Shutter: A picture is taken when the camera detects a portrait subject faceing the lens.
  • Smile Shutter: The camera releases the shutter when the subject smiles.
  • Buddy: The camera takes a picture when it detects two subjects close together.
  • Group: A picture is taken when the camera detects the selected number (1 to 4) of portrait subjects.

Interval Shooting/Time-Lapse Movie: You can capture multiple images of a scene taken at set intervals to capture a beautiful sunset or a flower blooming. You can save the still images only, or save the still images and create a time-lapse movie. The time-lapse movie will condense the scene from minutes or hours into seconds. You can set the shooting interval from 1 second to 24 hours, and the number of shots from 1 to 999. For the time-lapse movie, you can set the frame size at 4K, 1080p, or 720p, and the frame rate at 15 fps (4K only), 60 fps, 50 fps, and 24 fps.

Focusing: The XP140 uses contrast-detection TTL (through the lens) Auto Focusing. You can choose from Multi, Area, or Tracking focus modes for still images, and Center or Continuous Movie AF Modes. The camera's focus range is approximately 2.4" to infinity (wide angle) and 3.2' to infinity (telephoto).

Flash Modes: The FinePix XP140 has a built-in flash with an effective range of 1' to 14.4' (wide angle), 3.2' to 12.4' (telephoto). Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

  • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
  • Fill Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
  • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
  • Flash Off: You can close the pop-up flash when flash photography is prohibited, or to capture natural lighting under dim light.

Light Metering: The XP140 uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include a 9-image grid (3 x 3) and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails with the highlighted image slightly enlarged.

Image Search: The Image Search function lets you search pictures by the following criteria:

  • Date: Viewing images by date makes it easy to locate specific events or occasions.
  • Face: Portraits can be selected based on composition: groups, couples, or solo portraits.
  • Favorites: Search for photos by rating
  • Scene: Pictures shot in Auto or SR Auto modes can be replayed according to the type of scene: portrait, landscape, night scene, or macro.
  • Type: You can easily search your pictures according to the type of photos: still photos, edited images, or movie footage.

Playback Zoom/Cropping: You can enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size). After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition, you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies will have an aspect ratio of 4:3, and will be saved as a separate file.

Resize: To create a small copy of a picture, you can select "Resize" from the menu. The new images vary in size with the original image.

Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide show. You can select normal playback, or with a Fade transition. If the images is of faces, the camera automatically zooms in on the faces detected by Intelligent Face Detection.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print on a DPOF-compatible printer, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can also be printed wirelessly via Bluetooth to Fujifilm instax SHARE printers.

Power Requirements: The FinePix XP140 is powered by the supplied NP-45S Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (3.7V, 740mAh). The supplied AC-5VG AC power adapter will charge an NP-45S battery in the camera in about 120 minutes. The battery life specs are as follows:

  • Still Images: 240 shots
  • Movie Capture:
    • 4K: 42 minutes (actual); 73 minutes (continuous)
    • Full HD: 40 minutes (actual); 54 minutes (continuous)

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu. Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.

Connections

Micro HDMI: The FinePix XP140 is equipped with a Type-D Micro HDMI output for connecting the camera to a High Definition TV using an HDMI cable (not supplied).
