Selectable impedance

Infinity's Kappa 1200W 12" subwoofer features the unique Selectable Smart Impedance design, which lets you build exactly the system you want — high-power or multi-sub — without complicated wiring. Just flip the convenient impedance switch to safely choose between 2 or 4 ohms. If you're thinking about upgrading your amplifier or adding another sub down the line, this sub makes it easy to reconfigure — and it's nearly impossible to wire incorrectly.

Rugged construction

This sub handles plenty of power and sounds great in sealed or ported enclosures. Infinity's proprietary aero-cooling design helps keep the 2" voice coil cool. The acoustically damped glass-fiber cone minimizes distortion, giving you nothing but pure bass. And the steel basket provides a solid base for the sub, which handles up to 500 watts RMS. Infinity's Kappa subwoofers are known for their sound quality, and they offer the wiring versatility you need to build a system for your changing needs.

Product Research

Features
Enclosure Compatibility
Specifications

Features

Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI): A switch on the input terminal allows you to easily change the woofer's impedance between 2Ω and 4Ω settings. (The connected amplifier should be off when changing the impedance.) The power handling is the same for either setting; 500 watts RMS/2000 watts peak.

Woven Glass-Fiber Cone: The cone material is extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex; this results in very low distortion and improved clarity.

Vented Polepiece: Venting the polepiece reduces air compression under the dustcap which minimizes mechanical noise and provides more constant mechanical Q for reduced distortion.

Terminal: The spring terminals will accept bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Infinity recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.9 ft³.

Ported Box: Infinity recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 2.5 ft³ with one 4" diameter x 10" long port, resulting in a tuning frequency of 30 Hz. They also recommend using a sub-sonic filter.

Free-air Mounting: In addition to being compatible with sealed and ported enclosures, the woofer can be used in free-air applications. A free-air subwoofer is designed to be mounted on a baffle board, which separates the front of the speaker from the back. For instance, you could mount this woofer to a board attached to the rear deck or placed in the trunk against the rear seat. The trunk acts as the enclosure housing the subwoofer. Because there is no specific volume of air to stiffen the suspension, the free-air power handling is approximately half that of the woofer in a box, in this case 250 watts RMS.

Specifications

Thiele-Small Parameters: Because the woofer has two impedance settings, there are two sets of Thiele-Small parameters:

DC Resistance (Ω) 1.948 3.762
Inductance (mH) 1.10 0.85
Vas (liters) 64.47 64.47
Qms 4.0 4.0
Qes 0.567 0.566
Qts 0.496 0.496
Fs (Hz) 26.5 26.5
Radiating Area (m²) 0.05309 0.05309
Xmax (mm) 12.75 12.75
Motor Force Factor (TM) 11.32 15.74

What kind of amp will I need?

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your sub I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

What kind of amp will I need?

In a Fiat 500 Abarth, I run a Pioneer Gmd9705. It a couple years old but I think its 4x100rms, and 1x600rms @2ohms. I run 4- Kappa 62ix and 1- 1200w sub and Pioneer DEH-80PRS deck. I have never had an issue with power. The sub enclosure is sealed and just barley .75cubic feet. This sub pounds! Stays clean and crisp with all variety of music. I do recommend an amp with an additional DB control if you use something like pandora for music. The bass varies from song to song and the db control knob is my best friend! Car 2 is a 1970 convertible bug. I was able to fit 2-1200w in a sealed box behind the rear seat. I run a Pioneer Gm-dx971 @2ohms. I can tell you that I cannot turn it all the way up cause it shakes the car too much! I cannot turn it up loud in my garage without dishes in the kitchen and pictures on the walls rattling inside the house. Whatever amp you choose a rating of around 600rms has worked for me. Im old and Pioneer has never let me down for reliability and sound quality. I love the bass adjustment knob and the ability to raise or lower my bass in seconds depending on what bass levels I want. Infinity Kappa series at all levels is my preferred speaker for both amazing sound quality and reliability. I love the clarity of these subs! I do not like vented boxes but I am sure these would piss off your neighbors in a tuned ported box even with only 600w rms! Good luck on your build. Mahalo

Q
I see that this is marketed as a 1200W sub, however in the description it is rated for 500W RMS and 2000W Peak Power. If I hook it up to a 1200W amp will that be too much strain on it? What is the reason for the disparity in rating? ML

A
500 watts rms is what you should feed it ....
ryan  May 20, 2021
A
Well it is more like the model of the speaker ....not the rms rating......infinity has previous model subs like ...1227...1242...1209.....these were like 300-- 350 watts rms....so yes 1200 watts rms will be a strain if you turn the amp gain all the way up .....but if you turn it up boot 1/4 of the way ..it will be a clean unclipped signal ....
ryan  May 20, 2021
A
Don't pay attention to peak ratings, they're pretty much useless. I have this sub on 1,000W and it handles it just fine. As long as you're not clipping your signal, I'd think 1,200W would be ok.

Q
It doesn't look like Infinity offers a grille for this sub, would another manufacturers grille fit (Rockford, JL etc.)? or would I be limited to the waffle style generic grilles? Or does nothing fit at all?

A
We have not tested other brand grilles to know if its possible for them to work. We do know that a universal grille built to be held in place by clamps should work without an issue. Here's the universal grille that we offer: www.crutchfield.com/p_125G12/item.html

Q
I'm looking for a single 12 that'll be hooked to a 1200w amp in an SPLsetup that is stronger than a Kickier comp Q. Will this speaker fulfill that need?

Nathan, I would recommend getting in touch with one of our advisors for personalized assistance as we will need to look at your box size, design, and the specifics of that amplifier. https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx
