Your JL can sound as good as it looks

Your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JL epitomizes fun. It does everything, goes everywhere, but I've gotta ask... does it sound as good as it could, especially when the top's down? Well, Alpine has a solution. They've been creating great-sounding, seamless solutions for Wranglers a while now, and this Restyle PSS-23WRA audio upgrade package serves up everything you're missing in the JL factory system.

What this system's packin'

When the top is down and the wind's blowing, you can lose more than just your hat. Without a sub, your music's low end can sound less defined and the high frequency detail can get lost with the whoosh of passing traffic. This system adds Alpine's PWE-S8 powered 8" sub for some serious bass reinforcement and a pair of impressive SPR-10TW 1" silk dome tweeters to bring out all the high-frequency details. Of course, you'll need power for all your speakers, which is where the KTP-445U Power Pack comes in, supplying 45 watts RMS to your factory speakers and new tweeters.

Best of all, installation is simplified thanks to included Wrangler-specific brackets, adapters, and wiring harnesses.

Product Research

Features

Overview: Alpine's PSS-23WRA is a dedicated 300 watt sound system designed specifically for 2018 - Up Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JL vehicles not equipped with a factory amplified sound system. The system includes a KTP-445U 4 x 45 watt amplifier, SPR-10TW tweeters for the front dash, and a PWE-S8 8" powered subwoofer. The PSS-23WRA also includes a remote bass knob, for changing the bass level from the dash, along with all the mounting hardware and wiring harnesses necessary for mounting and adapting into the factory system.

Wiring: The PSS-23WRA system can be interfaced with a factory radio (non-amplified) or an aftermarket radio, including Alpine's Restyle headunits. The included T-harness interfaces the factory wiring in the dash, providing either a speaker-level signal from a factory radio or an RCA line-level signal from an aftermarket radio, to feed to the Alpine KTP-445U amplifier. The T-harness also feeds the amplified return signal back into the factory wiring and out to each of the speakers, utilizing the factory speaker wires. The provided wiring includes a 10 ga. power wire, with inline fuse holder, that gets run to the battery, providing power for both the 4-channel amp and the PWE-S8 subwoofer. Inline high-pass crossovers are provided for both sets of tweeters.

Mounting: Alpine provides a pre-attached bracket that mounts both the KTP-445U amp and the PWE-S8 subwoofer underneath the front passenger side seat. This means no usable space in the vehicle is taken up by the sound system. Each of the two tweeters also include pre-attached brackets, allowing them to sit in the factory locations and mount directly to the factory screw holes.

KTP-445U: The Alpine KTP-445U Head Unit Power Pack is a power upgrade amplifier that allows you to add higher output and more dynamic response to your aftermarket or factory installed car stereo system (without factory amplifiers). The Power Pack employs a 45 watt x 4 channel amplifier with an unbelievably low noise floor, taking extra care to ensure a clean signal path, with no extraneous interference. The end result is a 1 Watt Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 82dB or better. Uniquely, the amplifier distortion actually decreases at higher frequencies, resulting in a clean and clear signal where your ear is most sensitive to distortion (< 0.03% THD+N @ 1W; 1% THD+N @ rated power). The Alpine KTP-445U Head Unit Power Pack provides independent controls for the Front & Rear inputs.

  • Front & Rear Gains: The Power Pack provides simple variable gain controls (speaker level: 0.5-10V, low-level: 0.2-4V) for flexibility and a wide variety of system applications.
  • Front & Rear HPF: High-Pass selectable switches for the amplifier's Front & Rear inputs allow frequency filtering for a wide variety of speakers. Choose "Full-Range" or a selectable range (60Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz) to fine-tune your crossover points (-12dB/oct.).
  • Configurable Inputs: On the bottom panel of the Power Pack there are selectable input options to accommodate Speaker-Level (0.5V-10V) or RCA (0.2V-4V) inputs.
  • 4Ch/2Ch Modes: Selectable 2-Channel & 4-Channel options give you the control to determine source inputs, and can eliminate the need for Y-adapters.

PWE-S8: The Alpine PWE-S8 is a compact self-amplified subwoofer that's designed to fit in tight spaces, such as underneath the passenger's seat, which is where the included mounting hardware allows it to be hidden. The PWE-S8 includes a built-in 120 watt Class D amp along with an 8" high-excursion subwoofer. It can accept either line- or speaker-level inputs and features an Auto Turn-on circuit that will activate the amp when it senses a signal on the speaker-level inputs. An included wired remote lets you easily adjust the bass level from the front seating area. The control can be mounted under a dash panel and gives you a level range from 0 to -20 dB, relative to the gain setting on the amplifier. Controls on the subwoofer include:

  • Gain: Can vary the input level from 0.2 - 4.0 volts line-level and 0.5 - 10 volts speaker-level.
  • Low Pass Filter: Rotary control that can set the filter cutoff between 50 - 150 Hz.
  • Phase: Switches between 0˚ and 180˚.
  • Power Mode: Switches between SP IN (speaker-level input) and REM (wired remote input).

SPR-10TW: The included SPR-10TW tweeters are perfect for adding the extra high-end signals that are often missing from factory systems. The tweeter's pre-attached mounting brackets are designed to match perfectly to the factory mounting location and allow the tweeter to be tilted up to 15˚ in any direction to help focus the sound towards your ears. Each crossover has four tweeter level options, allowing you to precisely tune the high frequencies to the car interior and tweeter placement. Using the supplied jumpers select 0dB (no attenuation), -2dB, -4dB, or -6dB.

Customer Q&A

8 questions already asked

Q
I am about to install the Alpine upgrade in my 2020 Jeep Gladiator and one of the previous questions asked about adding more bass to the PSS-23WRA. One answer was to add a second PWE-S8, which sounds like a great option. Since the first upgrade is plug and play, is there a wiring diagram where to tap into the first sub for remote turn on and RCA signal? Or would I have to run separate lines from the back of the factory radio?
kevin  Jun 14, 2023

A
A ready-made wiring diagram is not available. However, our Tech Support team would be able to assist with the installation over the phone. It would be ideal to run a dedicated power/ground connect for the second subwoofer since the provided wiring is only intended for the first powered subwoofer.

Q
I already installed the Alpine PSS-23WRA Full Sound System Upgrade to my Jeep Gladiator but thinking I still need more bass. Will I be able to install a 2nd Alpine PSS-23WRA Full Sound System Upgrade or a different sub/amp system, such as Kicker 46HS10 to my existing system? Or I can take any suggestions on getting more bass using my current Alpine PSS-23WRA Full Sound System Upgrade. More bass for under seat is what I am looking for as suggestions and have both systems work together.

This is a great question, Juan. You can add more bass to the Alpine PSS-23WRA in a few ways. Adding another PWE-S8 in the first link below anywhere it fits is a great way to increase the bass, and since it uses speaker-level inputs it can be added to compliment your existing setup. For the most possible bass you can also use the MB Quart MBQJT-SUB-1 dual 8" enclosure in the second link. The custom subwoofer box replaces the OEM under-seat storage compartment, mounts neatly under the rear seat using the OEM hardware, and still provides access to your jack and top parts. No modifications to your floor mats will be required either. Pair the Dual 8" box with Alpine's fantastic A-A60M amp in the third link and you have the most bass possible! Either option is a solid one, depending on your overall bass goals. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500PWES8/Alpine-PWE-S8.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_049JTSUB1/MB-Quart-MBQJT-SUB-1.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SA60M/Alpine-S-A60M.html

Q
Does this kit alter the behavior of the built in limiter? The stock stereo goes up to 36, but doesn't get any louder past 24-28.

My 2018 Sahara Jlu goes to 38 (music paused), but I've never listened to anything above 22.

I would check your connections, I installed this on an 8.4" Uconnect and have no problems with volume.

With this upgrade once you hit the 20's is loud enough after 21 will be the same, this upgrade is worth the install and cost

Can you give me some idea of which replacement soundbar (rollbar) speakers would pair with and compliment this system?

I am interested in knowing this too! I have had this product installed for a week now and it was great. A huge improvement to sound quality and volume but now it does not work at all! I am reordering parts to figure out what the problem is. So frustrating.

I had trouble with the installation, and wound up returning this item, so I can't answer. But, I will say that with my latest purchase, a stereo upgrade for my 2012 Harley Davidson Street Glide the recommendations and tech support was awesome, so I would stand by their advice ??
gene  Jul 31, 2020
A
The sales pitch for this product only recommended replacing the dashboard speakers (replacements included in the kit). I have found the roll bar speakers which came with my 2018 JL sound great with the added power from this kit; no distortion at higher volume levels.

Q
So this replaces the head unit? Will it retain all the functionality of my stock 7" display HU?
keith  Jan 01, 2020
6 answers
A
No, this does NOT replace the HU. Yes, it WILL retain stock functionality of stock HU. I added this to my 18 JLUR with the 7" HU. The kit supplies a harness that goes between the HU and the new Alpine amplified system to maintain all factory settings. Be sure to disconnect [DC] the battery. I have heard that people that failed to DC BOTH both batteries had issues. I had NO issues. There are HowTo videos on YouTube that can further explain install and setup. I opted to use the DD-1 to set the gains and the CC-1 to set the crossovers on the amps. Get plastic pry tools to remove the dash components to prevent marring. Enjoy!

Everything stays factory only replace front dash tweeters and doesn't interrupt radio
artur  Jan 10, 2020
A
This does not replace your head unit or change any of your functionality. The harnesses are designed to plug into the back of your head unit. It took me about 4 hours to do the installation 6 months ago on my 2018 J. I highly recommend getting the upholstry tool to help with the install. Much of the dash has to be taken apart as well as the passenger seat removed. All well worth the time and effort. This system makes a huge difference in volume and sound quality!
g childress  Jan 10, 2020
A
No, it is just an add on to your existing system.
rick  Jan 10, 2020
A
This does not replace the Head Unit. This kit contains upgraded tweeter speakers, a powered sub with a built in amplifier that will mount under the passenger seat. The kit is also comes with all the wiring harnesses needed to plug into the existing HU. This kit will not work if you Jeep came with the upgraded stereo including a Sub Woofer that would have been mounted in the right rear storage area. If you have the standard factory stereo, then this kit is a nice upgrade for your system.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
I have the factory alpine system with 8" screen. Will this work with it?
jason  Apr 15, 2019
1 answer
A
Wouldn't see why not. I have a '18 JLUR with the 7" screen. No issues. Tight fit. Make sure all wiring is tucked away before reattaching the seat to ensure no clearance issues with the slide mechanisms. Quadratec has a HOWTO video on the interwebs.
joshua  Apr 16, 2019

I already have the subwoofer from my previous jeep. Is there somewhere I can just buy the T-harness to be able to plug into the JL head unit?
