About the Cambridge Audio Alva Solo

Eric A.

Hear your records as they're meant to sound

The Cambridge Alva Solo phono preamp looks good and makes your records sound amazing. Inside the beautiful silver chassis are circuit boards with surface-mounted components, and a state-of-the-art switch mode power supply. You can't see the components, but more importantly, you can't hear them. The Solo amplifies the tiny signal from a moving magnet cartridge without adding distortion or noise, so you hear only the beautiful music your records contain.

The Cambridge Solo uses clever design — inside and out — to keep noise out of your listening experience.

Another small, thoughtful detail: the inputs and outputs on the back of the preamp are labeled so they can be read right-side-up or upside-down. Anyone who's ever had to make connections to a component that's already in place will appreciate that little nuance. There's also a balance knob on the back of the unit so you can fine-tune left/right channel output.

Product Research

Features

Phono (MM) Preamplifier: Enjoy every last detail from your vinyl collection with Cambridge Audio's high-quality moving magnet phono stage, the Alva Solo Phono Preamplifier. Cambridge Audio designed the Alva Solo around exceptional components that deliver the warm and detailed sound that's synonymous with vinyl, all without distorting the signal from your moving magnet cartridge.

Note: Due to the low-level signals created by a turntable, not all integrated amplifiers and receivers will let you connect directly to a record player. A phono preamplifier, like the Cambridge Audio Alva Solo, boosts this signal to something an integrated amplifier or receiver can work with.

Moving Magnet (MM) Compatible: The Cambridge Audio Alva Solo phono pre-amplifier features a moving magnet (MM) input stage; which describes the commonly used type of cartridge (sometimes referred to as a "needle" or "stylus") configuration typically supplied with many turntables.

Note: The Cambridge Audio Alva Solo is not compatible moving coil (MC) cartridges.

Carefully Selected Components: To preserve the unique warmth of the vinyl sound, the Alva Solo phono preamplifier has been carefully designed with a state-of-the-art switch mode power supply and a new surface mounted circuit board layout to reduce unwanted noise. The switch mode power supply improves performance by switching outside of audible frequency to drastically reduce hum, while the new circuit board layout uses surface-mount components to reduce noise.

Subsonic Filter & Balance Control: If some records in your collection are a little worse for wear, the subsonic filter will help to eliminate low frequency rumbles that can be caused by imperfections within your vinyl. Combine this with the balance control for handling potential cartridge imbalances in your record player (that can cause a difference between the left and right channels) and the result is a detailed experience with accurate soundstage.

RCA Input/Output: The Cambridge Audio Alva Solo is outfitted with a set of stereo RCA inputs to connect your moving magnet (MM) cartridge turntable. The Alva Solo is also outfitted with a set of stereo RCA outputs to connect the pre-amplifier to the line-level inputs on your home receiver or integrated amplifier.

Note: Do not connect the Alva Solo to a "Phono Input" on a receiver or integrated amplifier.

Turntable Ground: If your turntable has a separate grounding lead then connect it to the Alva Solo's ground terminal. This provides shielding to the arm and the sensitive circuitry in the turntable.

Detachable AC Power Cord: The Cambridge Audio Alva Solo comes with a 58" detachable AC power which plugs into the back of the phono preamplifier and a AC power outlet or surge protector (sold separately).

  • Max Power Consumption: 10 watts
  • Standby Consumption: <0.5 watts
  • Mains Inlet Voltage: 100-240V AC

Auto Power Down: The Cambridge Audio Alva Solo has an Auto Power Down function. The phono preamplifier will automatically switch to standby mode after inactivity of 20 minutes.

Customer Q&A

Q
Can I use this with a Pro-ject X2 and a Yamaha Avenge 880? I know I will have to bypass the receiver's phono input since it has its own amplifier built in. Just wondering if Pro-ject phono components play better together than mix and match?

Greetings Henry, and thank you for your question. Unfortunately we did not measure behind the seat of 2005 Sierra. In many cases we did not, its not just the Sierra. If you want to try this subwoofer behind the seat, you would have to measure behind the seat. The Kicker 48TCWRT122 is 27"W x 13-1/2"H x 7"D1 x 3-1/2"D2.

Greetings dbeliera, and thank you for your question. Some would think sticking with the same brand would be better. After all that company is going to do all the R&D using just their equipment. Personally I have an older model Cambridge phono pre, and I have a Pro Ject RPM1, and its a fantastic set up. As long as your X2 keeps using the moving coli cartridges, the Solo will be a fine piece. If you think you may at some point go with the fuller moving coil, get a pre that can handle both types of cartridges.

Q
Hello, I understand I would need to turn off my turntable's internal amplifier and connect it via RCA cables to this Solo. Then connect the Solo to the Phono inputs on my receiver (Denon AVR-S750H). Correct?

A
Stephen, if you are connecting to a Denon AVR-S750H, your receiver already has a built-in phono preamp so you will not need the Cambridge Solo. Your turntable should either have a pair of RCA outputs and a ground pin, or a permanently attached RCA cable with a ground wire. The Denon's phono input will have a screw terminal to connect your turntable ground wire next to the RCA inputs so you connect the turntable straight to the receiver, switch source to "phono" and you are ready to go.

Hi Stephen, it sounds like you are looking to use the solo as a better preamp for your turntable, so you want unamplified Turntable out > solo > unamplified Denon input. The Denon's phono input may be amplified - if it is, I think you'll want to use a different RCA input on the Denon.
carl  Feb 25, 2021
A
Correct in that you turn off the turntable's internal amp. However, you would then plug the Solo into an AUX or open RCA input to bypass the Denon's phono amp.
michael  Feb 25, 2021
A
Yes, turn off your turntable pre-amp and hook the turntable RCA's and ground wire (if it has one) to the Solo and the outs from the Solo to aux. on your AVR. Do not use the phono inputs on your receiver. Depending on your cartridge and stylus you should be really happy with the Solo. Enjoy!
kevin  Feb 25, 2021
A
That is correct and exactly what I did. It doesn't even need to be a specific phono input since the Solo provides that function. I use the analog input on my Naim Uniti Atom. Sound is amazing!
