dBDrag Racing World Finals - Nashville, Tennessee, November 2-3, 2002

What's the story?
For dB Drag racers, it all comes down to this: the World Finals. The dB Drag Racing Association (dBDRA) invaded Nashville on Halloween weekend, and we were lucky enough to be there (with our Crutchfield tent and plenty of catalogs and giveaways in tow) to enjoy the festivities. We'd been looking forward to this event for quite some time, and we weren't disappointed — World Records got smashed left and right, and the action kept everyone entertained all weekend long!

Show highlights
Day 1: The World Finals were held indoors at the Nashville Convention Center, and although we rolled into town on Friday to get things set up, the real action started early Saturday morning with the dB Drag qualifying rounds.

Doors opened to the public at 10 AM, and the crowds started to pour in right on schedule. The first stop most people made was "vendor row", where manufacturers and retailers (like us) set up their booths and displays. There were lots of show cars to ogle, including James Turner's 1989 Honda CRX at our own tent. This ride is attracting serious attention everywhere it shows up thanks to extensive modifications and some mind-blowing I.C.E. (in-car entertainment). When 2:45 rolled around, the judging arena started to heat up as quarterfinal eliminations began. And, things heated up just a little bit more when the Hawaiian Tropic bikini contestants took the stage at 4:00. The day wound down around 7:00, and everyone headed out to rest up for Sunday's final dB Drag elimination rounds.

Day 2: As Sunday morning slipped into afternoon, the semi-final and final rounds kept the crowds enthralled. Nearly a dozen new World Records were set, including a 177.6 in the Extreme 13+ bracket! Sidenote: if you've never been to a dB Drag competition, you may be wondering how loud an indoor event like this is. Well, it's definitely an eardrum-buster, but the SPL cars actually aren't the culprits. They're treated to resist flex, and sealed up tight as drums when they're burped ("burping" is when a brief bass tone is played through the car's system, and the official dB measurements are taken). No, the insane noise levels come from the vendors, who crank up the volume in their displays and show cars in an effort to draw crowds! It's pretty exciting, and luckily we remembered our earplugs this trip.

For Team Crutchfield, the trip to the dBDRA World Finals was one of our most successful outings to date. We handed out tons of catalogs, showed off lots of the products we offer for sale, and had the chance to meet many of the people who make dB Drag such a cool hobby — competitors and spectators alike.
