Video: XpressRC Satellite Radio

Heads up!

Welcome to this article from the Crutchfield archives. Have fun reading it, but be aware that the information may be outdated and links may be broken.

Crutchfield's car audio experts Robert and Matt take a look at the XpressRC plug-and-play satellite radio. Their favorite features: the XpressRC's ability to pause and rewind live programming, and the split-screen, full-color display.

Robert: Hi. I'm Robert.

Matt: And I'm Matt.

Robert: And we're sitting here today with the XpressRC XM Satellite Radio. This unit has a really cool feature that I can go on and on about - its continuous recording capability. It works kind of like your DVR at home. While the unit's playing music, it's also recording that, uh, signal at the same time. That gives you the ability to pause and rewind the live playback. It's really handy like if you're going through a drive through or get a phone call. You don't want to stop listening, maybe you're listening to your favorite talk show, you just hit pause, take care of business, and then when you're ready to listen again, you hit play, and it starts up right where you left off.

Matt: That makes sense. One of the things that I love about it is the split screen display, which is fairly unique to, to this piece. It's full color, which means it's very easy to see at a glance, which is always safer with a plug and play radio which you're gonna have on your dashboard. The left side of the screen shows you what's playing on the channel you're currently listening to.

Robert: Pretty normal.

Matt: The right side of the screen shows you what's playing on three other channels simultaneously. Makes channel surfing a lot more fun, a lot more interesting, and it makes it easy to find out if some of your favorite songs are playing.

Robert: Oh, speaking of favorite songs, this unit also has a feature called SongSaver. It lets you store up to ten of your favorite songs in the receiver's memory. So at any time you want to hear your favorite ten songs you can call 'em up and listen to them over and over again.

Matt: That's great.

Robert: It is.

Matt: Um, and now how have you found using the piece.

Robert: It works really well. It comes with a car kit for listening to it in the car. You can either plug it into your stereo's auxiliary input or use the included cassette adapter. What it doesn't have is a built in wireless transmitter, so if you can't do aux-in or cassette, you'll have to purchase an optional transmitter and just connect it that way through your FM stereo.

Matt: That makes sense. And it does have a remote, correct?

Robert: Yeah. It's sitting right here. You can use this when you're in the car. That makes it, you know, a lot easier to tune and play with it while you're driving, but also it works at home too if you're listening there, which by the way, I should mention, you'll need to get an optional home kit, which includes a dock and all the cabling. And that is the XpressRC.
