Video: SIRIUS Sportster 5 Satellite Radio

Heads up!

Welcome to this article from the Crutchfield archives. Have fun reading it, but be aware that the information may be outdated and links may be broken.

Crutchfield's car audio experts Robert and Matt take a look at the SIRIUS Sportster 5 plug-and-play satellite radio. With the Sportster, you can pause and rewind live programming.

Matt: Hi, I'm Matt.

Robert: And I'm Robert.

Matt: And today we are sitting with the SIRIUS Sportster 5 dock-and-play satellite radio.

Robert: What's a dock-and-play?

Matt: Well a dock-and-play is — you'll also hear it referred to as a plug-and-play — basically, you'll have the radio itself, which is just this small, and it can dock in a cradle that you either use with your car stereo, or a cradle that you use with your home stereo. So, you can take it from car to home, but you'll have to have a dock for it to sit in.

Robert: And this Sportster comes with a car dock and other things you need to hook it up in the car. A home kit with a home dock is available separately.

Now one of the cool features about this unit — the one I like the most — is its continuous recording feature. When you're listening to the radio just going down the road, you know, doing your own thing, the radio is recording everything as it plays. And that gives you the ability to use it kind of like a home DVR, where you can pause live playback and, you know, pick it up again later. Like if you're going through the drive-thru or you get a phone call, you can pause it where you are, and when you finish your business you can pick it up again and keep going without missing anything.

Matt: That's great. And I gotta say, one of the things that I like about it is the large, very bright multi-color display. It's a 2.7-inch display. A problem with earlier plug-and-play models, dock-and-play models, is that, you know, they had a single-color display, it wasn't necessarily very big or very easy to see. This one is. It gives you all the information you need, that you can see at a glance, which is much safer when you're, you know, looking at song titles or trying to see what song is playing while you're driving down the road. And another nice feature of the display: you can actually customize the color options. So with just a few presses of the button in the menu, you can change the background color, you can change the button color to match your dash, match your interior, whatever's easiest on your eyes. It's really, really nice.

Robert: And you also have the ability to see what's playing on other channels without interrupting the channel you're listening to.

Matt: That's nice.

Robert: The Sportster also includes a really nice remote control, which, again, makes it a little safer and easier to use when you're in the car, but also if you're using it at home. You can be kicked back on the couch, change channels, see what else is playing, not have to get up and go to the stereo. So it's pretty cool.

Matt: That sounds great. And that's the short story on the SIRIUS Sportster 5.
