Video: Add Garmin Navigation to Kenwood DVD Receivers

Heads up!

Welcome to this article from the Crutchfield archives. Have fun reading it, but be aware that the information may be outdated and links may be broken.

Watch this video to find out how to add Garmin navigation to many new Kenwood DVD receivers. Hint: purchase a Garmin app for your iPhone® and the Kenwood receiver becomes the navigation display.

Shop for Kenwood DVD and navigation receivers.

I have a Kenwood DDX418 it is navigation ready but Kenwood does not have an add on anymore for this model. Can an app work on my phone and view it on the head unit via Bluetooth?? Thank you for your time

Hi Al - sorry to say, there's no way to transmit maps from a smartphone app to a receiver via Bluetooth. There's way too much information involved for that transfer to happen any way but wired or via Wi-Fi. While our tech support team will still be able to help you out with most other issues with your DDX418, I'd recommend looking at a newer DVD receiver that either has built-in GPS navigation or is compatible with Apple CarPlay and/or Android Auto, both of which provide navigation through the receiver via smartphone mapping apps, including Waze. These technologies have really come a long way in the past decade since the DDX418 hit the market. One of our advisors can walk you through what's available and will work with your vehicle if you reach out via phone or web chat.

I have Kenwood DDX4019BT head unit and it has the application for navigation but it's doesn't seem to work, is there anyway I can use my head unit as a navigation system as well? also how do I play DVDs from the head unit I've tried putting it via USB but all it does is say that it can't play this device? Thanks

Hi Alexander - Sorry to hear you're having issues with your Kenwood DDX4019BT. Unfortunately, we're only authorized to sell and provide service for the United States and Canada, and that seems to be a product only for the Australian/Asian/European markets. My recommendation would be to seek out a local car electronics specialist shop, and they should be able to help. Good luck!

Can I get this app to work with KVT-516?

    Dominic DeVito from Crutchfield

    on 6/9/2019

Hi Mike: Apologies but the Garmin app shown in this video is no longer available or supported for either Android or iOS. The KVT-516 was not built to work with this app, either. In theory, you could add navigation to the KVT-516 with the Kenwood KNA-G610 GPS module, but that was discontinued by Kenwood several years ago, so I'm not sure how up-to-date the maps on one you might find secondhand would be. I'm sure your KVT-516 still works great, but one of our Advisors will be happy to discuss possible upgrades if you want to reach out via chat, email, or phone.

Fred, that stereo isn't equipped for that kind of functionality. If you want app-based nav functionality, you might want to look at stereos with Android Auto. You'll gain access to Google Maps and other apps, but not necessarily the ATT Nav app. You'll also want confirm compatibility with your phone. Give us a call and we can help you with that.

Hi Fred: Sorry but there doesn't seem to be any way to view or control the AT&T Navigator App on the Kenwood DDX394 receiver. There are some Kenwood receivers which will allow app access through the Kenwood Smartphone Control app (for Android phones only), but they all have an HDMI input, which the DDX394 lacks.

I have the ATT Nav app. on my Samsung phone. Can I interface it to the DDX394 Kenwood system in my vehicle?

  • Alexander Hrabe from Crutchfield

Zach, no, that feature has been phased out of select Kenwood receivers. However, choosing a receiver with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay would give you access to certain navigation apps on your compatible smartphone.

Would I be able to add this feature to Kenwood ddx374bt?

Leo, I can't speak to that model specifically since I can't find any info on that model number. However, if it's not already a navigation receiver, there's no way to add navigation. You'll need a separate nav device, and be sure that it is loaded with Australian maps.
