Video: Mackie DL1608 mixer

Use your iPad® to control your live mix

Heads up!

Welcome to this article from the Crutchfield archives. Have fun reading it, but be aware that the information may be outdated and links may be broken.

When you dock your 4th generation iPad® into Mackie's DL1608 interface console, it becomes the control surface of a full-featured 16-channel mixer. Connect a Wi-Fi router, and you can use your iPad to mix the band from a seat in the audience. To protect your DL1608 on the road, we offer a custom-fit case by Gator Cases.

I play in a band, and sometimes we need to bring our own PA to gigs. When we do, we take the Mackie DL1608 digital mixer. By combining the DL1608 and powered speakers, we were able to replace racks of outboard gear and amplifiers we'd normally have to haul.

One great thing about this mixer is that we can control it using IOS devices. An iPad docks to the mixer, but you can also set it to work over Wi-Fi, which lets you detach it from the dock and tweak the sound from anywhere in the room. And everyone in the band has control over their own mix. They can pull up the Mackie app on their iPhones and tweak the sound on their individual monitors.

And the mixer has sixteen input channels, which is plenty for our purposes. Mackie's mic pres are top-of-the-line, so everybody sounds great. Each channel has its own graphic EQ and even digital effects like compressors, reverbs, and delays, so it's easy to find a sound that fits a particular room.

The DL1608 is perfect for our band and I'd recommend it to anyone running their own PA. If you have any questions on this mixer or others, just give us a call.
