Lots of work required for installation
Crutchfield customer from Mission Viejo, CA on 10/14/2019
1990 GMC Suburban
I understand this is a universal kit but it does not work very well on an older suburban. The mounting attachments are not set up for an angled installation and will need to be heated up and bent to work. The plastic is also way too thick to put the dash instrument cluster cover over it and you will need to do lots of cutting to get it to work. Better off getting a piece of metal and making your own dash plate.
Pros: looks ok
Cons: Lots of modification required

This kit fits like garbage in my 1990 Suburban Squarebody. Only one mounting hole lines up leaving the whole kit loose and floppy. This kit sticks out way too far and points the head unit slightly downwards making the display harder to read.

This seems to be an update to a similar type I installed 21 years ago. Radio was supposed to fit but was 3/16ths deeper than the unit it replaced. The kit included an extension faceplate which I could have used but couldn't without radi being recessed about 3/4's of an inch, in other words you had to stich your finger in the recessed area to work the radio.

The product does not fit the car. I have send them pictures and have talked with a tech there but all they keep telling me "it suppose to fit that car" I am sure it is SUPPOSE to fit but it doesn't. During my last conversation, the tech told me that I may have to cut or alter my dash. This is not happening !!! I have purchased numerous products from Crutchfield and have never, NEVER had any problems. The radio that I am replacing came from Crutchfield, and had no problem at all.

Thomas E from Conklin on 4/22/2017

Very crude. Comes like a plastic model car kit in that you need to break the pieces off. Then you need to file down the stubs to make it look decent. Also you need to wedge it in very forcibly for a 97-03 Grand Prix because it hardly fits anyway
Pros: It might work with some extra trimming and such
Cons: Very cheap junk

Wrong kit for vehicle application
Robert from Sun Prairie, WI on 5/14/2016
1984 Pontiac Trans Am
In doing away with CD players, new digital media receivers are now nicely, very shallow depth units. This dash kit is really designed for those older CD/DVD players. With the stereo I purchased, I should have been able to mount it nicely flush with the dash. If I had used this kit it would have caused the stereo to protrude out from the face of the dash unnecessarily, and unattractively. There were no additional pieces in this kit to give you mounting options based on the stereo depth. I purchased a different dash kit online: Scosche GM1516B Camaro/Firebird kit, and achieved the fit I was looking for.
Pros: Surface finish of kit matches the factory dash
Cons: Kit is designed for old school CD/DVD receivers Only. If you want a flush kit you are going to have to shop for one separately.

Pretty generic OEM replacement. Mounting brackets, when snapped into place protrude from the bezel, I had to remove 1/16" of dash chassis frame on both left and right sides of the mounting holes for proper mounting. Internal bezel area has square corners.
Pros: Thick black plastic......plenty of mounting bracket options. Kenwood bezel fits well within the internal frame bezel opening.
Cons: OLD generic fit design, your dash may require much modification. Resembles left over mold design from the 80's. FRAGILE Plastic mounting brackets, don't over tighten and means no chassis grounding. Has all square edges and corners, NOW the only square sharp edges in the entire car interior. Pay a little more for something perhaps a bit more up to date and has an appearance that enhances your new stereo, I should have.

Does what it is supposed too, with some modifications. I had to use my Dremal to shave the sides down some as it was way to tight at first. I also had to shave down the sides of mounting area, but this was not too difficult. Someone without the proper tools may be frustrated when using this though.

Cons: The "one-size-fits-most" application has to be adjusted to fit some applications.

Works, but could use some improvement
Sal from PA on 7/14/2013
1990 Chevrolet Suburban
The good news is my stereo is in my truck, the bad news is I had to do some drilling and find some new hardware to make it fit. The kit only lines up with one of the original mounting holes. The right side mounting hole lines up OK but on a 1990 Chevy Suburban the second mounting hole on the left is actually on the bottom side of the dash. This kit is make to mount to a vehicle that has the holes in line with each other but this is not the case for my vehicle. Also there is a brace on the left side and you need to use the included bracket that has the top section removed for the left side so it does not hit the bracket and cause the whole kit to fit improperly. I then found some bolts that roughly fit the clearance for the holes as well as some washers and nuts. I had to drill a new hole on the left side to complete the mounting. I only used 3 of the included parts to mount my stereo. The main faceplate with my stereo was the best combo as the extenders would prop the radio out much farther than the original. My issue with the main extender was that the DIN slot was very loose and even after bending the locking tabs it was still a bit lose. On the contrary the largest extension was far too tight and bent the DIN slot so much the radio did not fit in. Like the little bears the middle extension was just right and had the best fit but I had a weird relief to it and I did not want to use it.
Pros: With some power tools and new hardware my radio fits.
Cons: Incorrect mounting geometry for a vehicle it is listed to work for. Completely wrong as the mounting is not even on the right side of the plate. Sloppy fit on the main faceplate, odd cutouts on the middle plate, and far too tight on the long extension. Hardware would have worked but was far too small for the holes that were in the plastic mounting brackets.

Don't buy a replacement deck without this!!!
Mike G from Cottage Grove, MN on 3/5/2013
2003 Pontiac Grand Prix
I've installed multiple decks before without getting the installation kit. It made installation so much easier than trying to attach the wires with it hanging in the dash. I took about 5 minutes to splice my connections onto the harness, a couple of minutes to attach the harness to the wire harness in my car then to the back of my deck, and then just slide it into the dash and I was done. In a GM vehicle, the protruding section doesn't look that out of place and matches my stereo fairly well.
Pros: Colors matched my stereo, very easy installation, and I got it free with my stereo
Cons: Can't think of any at all!

Installed on a 2002 Grand Prix GT. Exterior fit and finish looks and fits nicely with stereos face plate. However with the universal mounting tabs, I found that the tabs protruded enough to where the interior fit where the tabs are were extremely tight. Used a dremel tool to clearance a nice fit. Pros: Quick delivery, looks good, exterior fit and finish is good.
Cons: Had to clearance dash area around universal tabs.

But this dash kit is one of the hardest I have ever had to install, every place that slides into another you are going to be needing a file because nothing fits exactly right with each other. In-dash Receiver Kit
Rapha from Los Angeles, CA on 3/19/2012
1983 Pontiac Trans Am
In the past, I had to modify, add, and cut multiple pieces of metal and plastic for the radio to sit nicely in the compartment. However, when I heard about the install kit for my 83 Transam was available, I said, 'Let's go for it.' Snap the right two pieces in place and was ready to be received in the old radio compartment. Done!! I am happy to have made that purchase.
Pros: Fits nice and snug. Durable Plastic-tough!
Cons: I had to cut away part of the upper plastic behind the old factory radio bracket (in the rear compartment) because the wires kept me from installing the radio nicely. I like the wires to be a certain way. And the piece I cut off wasn't important.

Pros: ease of installation, simple instructions, supplied at no cost with the radio,,,can't say much more about a piece of plastic other than it makes the whole look...
Cons: A bit of a tight fit into the existing factory opening for my 99 Grand Prix this may not be the case in other makes and models in any case it was not a problem of major concerne, slid in and screwed down fine...

Poorly designed product
WHB from GA on 7/22/2011
2000 Pontiac Grand Prix
This receiver kit was poorly designed. It first requires you to cut a mounting bracket in the dash cavity. Once that was cut, i realized the kit was too wide for the dash cavity opening. I had to use a dremel to trim down the edges. Once the kit is installed it protudes from the dash an inch(as i was informed it would) and then the thickness of the cd player deck makes it stickout almost 1/2 inch more. This kit could have been designed to go a little bit deeper in the dash after cutting the rear bracket from the dash cavity.

It took some work to make everything fit correctly; I had to file down the factory DIN slot to make this fit correctly. It was not a big deal, however. Just required some elbow grease. Also, it was some work to get it on the receiver itself. However, all of this tightly-fitting stuff made for a pretty good looking install. I'd challenge someone to tell me it wasn't professionally done. It matches the dash trim color and everything, too.

With a little modification of the internal factory stereo support you can use only the mounting bracket and not the bump-out part of the kit. As for the fit I had to break out the files to make it fit how I felt it should. For being included with a new deck i really cannot complain, looks clean and fits with no wiggle 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

Putting a new stereo in my daughter's 2000 Grand Am...it seems as if this model year is the one that no other kits cover. I didn't dare buy another kit just to find out it doesn't fit, like it says on the box. Enter Crutchfield, I remembered the name from my teenage years buying Kenwood casette decks and Alpine EQ/amplifiers. The last setup I had in my car is now in my camp trailer. I knew I could trust Crutchfield when it came to installation kits. If it says it will fit, it will. It took me an hour with my underpowered soldering gun to connect the harness, and twenty minutes in the garage to replace the whole unit. Thanks Crutchfield.

It got the job done but.....
Skyjockey from United States on 1/1/2011
well this gets the job done but it isn't pretty. The description says it will stick out 1" which it does and then some with the radio installed. I wish it had a flush install option since there isn't much behind the radio needed to cut for a flush fit. Also as others said, it really had to be forced into the dash opening but it does fit. Can't really complain too much for the price. 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix

The faceplate kit took only a few minutes to unpack and prepare, the finished product makes the dash look professional, neat and secure with no rattles. Takes a lot of work out of the install. Great product worth the money.

The thing that was great was the harness cable adaptor. The instructions and advertisement didn't really indicate that the new radio came with a connector or loose wires but left it up to your imagination how to connect the wires. It should be more specific that the harness adaptor supplied connected to the harness connector that was previously connected to your old radio and that you had to physically connect those wires to either a matching connector supplied by the manufacturer or loose wires coming from the radio.

Works well, though it would be nice if the had "secure" model made out of 1/4 inch steel with secure bolts (so that thieves couldn't take it out of the car in under 30 seconds).

Used this to install a unit in my 2000 Pontiac GrandAm, while happy with the end result arriving there took more effort than it should have. For my install I needed to use the nose extension, this required using an X-acto knife to cut off plastic flashing leftover during manufacturing before it would fit properly onto the adapter, once that was done the unit fit perfectly in the dash and looks good.

99 Pontiac Grand Prix Install

I agree with everyone about it being a tight fit, I found (with some unwanted practice due to rewiring) that if you put a screw on one side holding it in place, that will allow you to ease it into the dash pushing from the other, or a screwdriver helps wedge it in. I thought about filing, but I wanted a tight fit with the LCD waving around. There were some plastic edges to file, but overall very clean. My only issue was the instructions said 'GM', so I put on the mounts, tired after work, and found out that the ones for a Firebird are required in my car. My fault for not looking, but in this case, RTM came back to bite me when I walked outside. Altogether, a perfect fit, very tight, hardly noticable with the extension when you have a video head unit with the screen out, and only slightly so when closed as a standard radio. A slight lip or indent in the front would hide the sleeve metal better tho on the radio, due to the slight off center fit the bezel won't cover the sleeve edges behind the head unit. I'll buy another of these for our truck when the wife upgrades hers for sure.

Modifications required
ardisian from PA on 9/2/2009
1994 Pontiac Grand Prix
First of all, the extension Din piece wouldn't fit into the main adapter. I had to file down the inner edges for the clips to even reach the designated holes. Then the main mount is too wide with the clips on the side by about 1/8 Inch. So I had to break away plastic on the cars stock plastic just to be able to pound the mount into place. It barely fit my 94GP. Modifications are required to fit this into this gen of vehicle; 94-96GP's.

I used this in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Am and I was pleased for the most part with this item. Once assembled and the DIM sleeve was installed, the head unit was held very securely and didn't wiggle at all. The mounting brackets snap on and are built fairly strong and fasten securely. The surface texture on the visible portions matched my stock dash panel perfectly (1996-1998 GM N-body). The only problem I had was the extension sleeve. I had to trim off some molding marks and then file a bit of the plastic away from the face that meets the flat face where the stock radio face used to be. The clips that hold the extension sleeve in wouldn't engage when I pushed it in, removing that material let the sleeve slide in far enough for the clips to catch all the way. Once I did some filing and trimming it fit nice and tight, nothing shakes, it's just like it should be.

This was really easy to work with. The only problem I had was the sleeve from the receiver fitting into it. It was a really tight fit and I had to really work to get it on. Overall that is a good thing, but it was a little frustrating at the time! Fits beautifully into the dash, and matches really well.

This Kit allowed for a perfect fit/finish while replace the stock GM radio in my 99 Pontiac GP. Installation notes claim new radio will stick out 1 inch but that was not the case. If you just break off the molded plastic rear support for the old stock radio the new radio will fit flush. A pair or pliers will do the job just fine. Just grab and snap. Another smooth replacement from order to install. Everything i needed in one box. Super fast shipping too. Thanks Crutchfield.
