About the Yamaha A-S1200

An attractive, well-built integrated amplifier
An attractive, well-built integrated amplifier
The A-S1200 is the little brother of the A-S2200 and A-S3200, but it's plenty powerful and impressive in its own right. It delivers a robust 90 watts per channel, and it's 4-ohm stable, so it can handle a wide variety of speakers. It offers features intended to make analog music sources sound superb, including an efficient toroidal transformer, and solid, vibration-resistant construction.
If you're a bit nostalgic for the components of the 1970s — I grew up with them and I love the look — you'll appreciate the large level meters illuminated by soft LED light. The switches and knobs on the front panel were meticulously designed to complement the overall visual style of this amp.
Excellent analog connections
These days, it's a bit unusual to see an integrated amp with no digital inputs, but this amp is all about analog goodness. There are four unbalanced RCA inputs on the back, included dedicated inputs for a separate tuner and the analog output of your CD player. There's also a discrete phono stage that lets you connect a turntable with a moving magnet or moving coil cartridge.
The two sets of binding posts might look a little different than what you're used to. They're made of pure brass, and they have a nice "grippy" shape that makes them easier to spin open and closed.

Features
Floating & Symmetrical Amplifier Design: The A-S1200 adopts a Yamaha's unique floating and symmetrical power amplifier design to create an open and natural stereo soundstage. With the same polarity on the plus and minus sides of the output stage, along with completely separating the NFB (negative feedback) circuit and power supply into a total of four plus and minus sides of the left and right channels, results in a thoroughly symmetric push-pull operation of the output stage. In addition, completely floating the entire power amplifier circuit from the ground removes any negative impact of minute voltage fluctuations or ground noise.
Low Impedance Rated: Yamaha's low Impedance concept, aided by the thick wires for ground connection, is critical for components adopting the badge of premium Hi-Fi. This Yamaha design concept begins in their premium Hi-Fi components with the A-S1200, helping to present an open, natural sound stage, bringing the artist and listener closer together.
- 8-Ohm Power Rating: 90 watts x 2 channels(@20-20kHz with 0.07 THD (with both channels driven).
- 4-Ohm Power Rating: 150 watts x 2 channels(@20-20kHz with 0.07 THD (with both channels driven).
Toroidal Transformer: Usually reserved for flagship Hi-Fi components, the A-S1200 benefits from the technical proficiency and absolute musicality of a toroidal transformer. Combined with an array of high-end Hi-Fi features and components, the toroidal transformer assists in ensuring the musical emotion is conveyed to the your, the listener.
Mechanical Ground Concept: The A-S1200 adopts a Mechanical Ground Concept, inherited from both the A-S2200 and A-S3200. The concept begins with the bolts of the feet welded directly to the main chassis, followed with the large heat sink, power transformer and block capacitors also directly bolted to the chassis. Through this design, unwanted vibration is avoided, achieving expressive and rhythmic bass, presenting music you can feel to the you, the listener.
Level Meters: The front-panel level meters are both a nod to the nostalgic era of Hi-Fi, while simultaneously demonstrating the return of pure Hi-Fi for today's discerning enthusiast. Visually presenting the dynamics and pulse of the music, the level meters imbue a warm feeling through their softly illuminated LEDs. The Level Meters has 4 settings -
- Peak: The Peak level meter shows the highest instantaneous level of an audio output signal.
- VU: The VU (Volume Unit) level meter shows an effective audio output value that represents the way sound is perceived by human ears.
- Dimmer: When selected, the Dimmer setting automatically changes the brightness of the meter display in steps. When you see the brightness level you desire, switch to another setting parameter to lock in the new brightness setting.
- Off: Turns off meter operation and display illumination.
Connections
Analog Inputs/Output: The Yamaha A-S1200 is equipped with six unbalanced analog RCA stereo inputs for connecting an external audio source such as a CD player, AM/FM tuner, Turntable, and/or cassette deck; as well a preamp or AV receiver. There is also one analog RCA stereo output for recording through the integrated amplifier.
Main Direct Input: One of the A-S1200's analog inputs is labeled "Main Direct Input". This input allows you to connect your preamplifier or AV receiver directly to the A-S1200 and use the Yamaha integrated amp as a power amplifier to drive a pair of speakers in your system.
Note: Audio signal coming into the amplifier's Main Direct Input is only output through the speaker outputs of the A-S1200. No audio signal will by output from the stereo amplifier's Pre-Out, Rec Out, or Headphone Output.
Discrete Configured Phono Preamp: The phono preamp is comprised of a MC head amp and an equalizer amp, each of which are discretely configured, resulting in a rich sound with pronounced musicality when playing vinyl records with both MC and MM phono cartridges. The unit's Phono input consists of stereo RCA jacks and a ground terminal. There is a switch on the back panel which allows you to indicate what type of turntable cartridge (MC/MM) you are using.
High-Quality Binding Post Terminals: The Yamaha A-S1200 is outfitted with two sets of binding-post speaker terminals (A&B) that are cut directly from pure brass, enabling a secure connection with no reduction in sound quality. Contoured to the shape of human fingers, they can be turned easily and fastened tightly with minimal effort. They are also compatible with connections using banana plugs (single only).
Note: You can use the A & B speaker outputs to power two pair of separate speakers or you can bi-wire a single pair of speakers. If you use two sets (A and B) of speakers, the impedance of each speaker must be 8-ohm or higher. When only using one set of speakers (A or B), use speakers with an impedance of 4-ohm or higher.
Pre-Outs: The Yamaha integrated amplifier is equipped with a stereo preamp output for connecting a powered subwoofer or to use the A-S1200 as a preamplifier and connect it to a larger power amplifier to power your speakers.
Headphone Jack: The A-S1200 integrated amplifier is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a pair of headphones (sold separately). Once a set of headphones are connected, the amplifier's speaker outputs mute automatically.
Note: The headphones do not function for the amplifier Main Direct Input.
Controls
Front-Panel Controls: The Yamaha A-S1200 integrated amplifier offers the following convenient front-panel controls - Volume, Input Select, Bass & Treble, Balance, Meter, and A+B Speaker Selection.
IR Remote: The supplied IR remote features a design complementary to the aluminum front-panel of the integrated amp with a simple, easy-to-understand button layout and a gorgeous metallic texture. In addition to the basic volume adjustment and input switching controls of the A-S1200, it can also be used to operate Yamaha CD players (sold separately).
Tone & Balance Control: The Yamaha A-S1200 offers Bass & Treble, as well as Balance control. The Bass (50Hz-350Hz band) & Treble (3.5kHz-20kHz) can be adjusted independently from -9 dB to + 9 dB. The entire low and high bands are increased or decreased (you cannot indicate a specific center frequency for bass & treble). The Balance control adjust the audio output balance between the left and right speakers to compensate for sound imbalances caused by speaker locations or listening room conditions.
Trigger Input: The A-S1200 features a 12V trigger input (3.5mm) to synchronize power on /off with another component that features a 12V trigger output.
Remote In/Out: The integrated amp also has a remote input (3.5mm) and remote output (3.5mm) for use with external IR receivers and compatible Yamaha components.
Auto Power Standby: The integrated amplifier enters standby mode automatically if not presented with an audio signal or operated for approximately 8 hours.

I am blown away with the change in audio separation and bass! I was concerned I should add a woofer to my revel speakers. I don't even even have to go to the max bass on the amp! Crutchfield does it again giving me the advice I need!
