Our take on the Yamaha CD-S300

Yamaha's versatile CD-S300 not only plays your CDs, including home-burned MP3 and WMA mix discs, but it also gives you a front-panel USB port for plugging in your iPod, iPhone®, or iPad®. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned a number of Yamaha components over the years and the quality of my new CD-S300 stands up. However, I rated it a 4 rather than a 5 for two reasons. The CD tray feels on the flimsy side and I have to use the remote control to change to elapsed time. I would prefer to have on the unit itself. Beyond that, it is performing as expected.

I was really surprised to hear the clarity of the instruments and lyrics in the first cd I played. I don't listen to cd's that often, but when I do, it's nice to hear clearer music from my new Yamaha compared to my 24 year old Kenwood. Thank you Crutchfield for offering a great product at a great price.

Very pleased with the Yamaha CD-S300 player. Have only used it to play factory CD's so far. Clear, crisp sound and works great with the Yamaha R-N303 receiver we purchased previously.

Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware)

Matt from Edwards, CO on 3/11/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The S300 has outstanding sound for CD playback, however, do your homework if you think that your ipod classic will be plug and play with this unit. My ipod classic files are AAC encoded and the S300 does not support them. After multiple attempts to convert them to mp3 in iTunes I surrendered to the realization that the functionality in my case for this unit would be a very nice CD player for my garage system. Yamaha does not offer any support or update to upgrade the functionality of the S300. For a company like Yamaha this is disappointing to say the least.

Pros: Sound

Cons: Functionality

Great sound for the money

Grant from Waterman, IL on 3/6/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with this CD player. It plays all my cd-Rs and they sound great. But what sold me on it was the usb, and as advertised, it improves the sound of my iPod too!all in all, for the money, this is a great little unit. If there is a drawback, I, for the life of me, cannot hear an improvement in sound when using the pure direct function. But it still sounds great! Thanks

Pros: Plays cd-r. Has usb to play iPod and iPhone and improves sound.

Cons: Not sure about pure direct

disc error issues

windsurfer from San Jose, CA on 2/26/2018

It produces sounds mostly in the high and mid tones. Not much low frequency performance. It shrills when listening classical music until you start getting tired of listening this thing. The most important issue is that it produced "no disc" error after the 5th time I played. The unit is like new. I cleaned the lens, but it seems that the entire laser unit was malfunctioning. Can you imagine a CD player start malfunctioning just by sitting? Bad quality control. I don't understand why people give good feedback.

Pros: Nothing

Cons: bad quality control bad sound production

Best In Class

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 15 year old favorite cd player finally gave up the ghost. I am not ready to give up access to my extensive cd collection so I started the search for a new player. I was immediately shocked by the prices the top of the line players fetch today. I mean, really? There are only a few manufactures of transports today and we long ago learned to how to make a DAC sound good. So I read reviews and read specs and bought two players to compare. One was the Yamaha CD-S300 the other was, well lets call it M. I set up a listening test using duplicate CDs and the output of my music server thru a good quality DAC. first I compared the sound of the individual players to the DAC. The M player was close but I noticed a graininess on lower level horn sections that wasn't there with my DAC. Switching to the Yamaha CD-S300 immediately I noticed no difference between it's sound and the sound from my DAC. Perfect! With different material I compared the sound of the M player with the sound from the Yamaha CD-S300. Diana Krall never sounded so good! The Yamaha CD-S300 reproduced the piano and her voice nicely. The M player seemed to add an edge to the higher note piano keys and a little grain to her voice. Why the differences? I don't know. No need to measure. I heard what I heard. I shipped the M back to the discount house I ordered it from and kept the Yamaha CD-S300 for my main system. So, this is one frugal audiophile that recommends this cd player.

Pros: smooth sounding dimmable display handy remote doesn't cost a fortune bonus points for being able to plug in a flash drive!

Cons: remote doesn't match case color ( get over it) no power off from remote, odd but not a deal breaker for me

Great sound for the price

Tim from Seattle, WA on 12/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After upgrading to a new Yamaha amp a few months ago I decided to buy a CD player to listen to my collection of Jazz cd's rather than the compressed digital versions on my iPod after hearing the improvement in sound quality on a friend's system. What a difference! The CD-S300 is sleek and fits well with my amp. An important feature for me was the USB port for my iPod. Overall I am very impressed with the quality of the unit, with the only negative being the track title being played is not displayed on the unit nor on the remote.

Pros: Yamaha quality, USB port for iPod

Cons: No display of tract being played.

Yamaha CD-S300

Richard from Austin, TX on 9/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha CD-S300 is a well made and solid unit. I have it connected to an older NAD 7100 receiver using standard audio cables and my primary listening device is a set of Sennheiser HD579 headphones. The unit performs well with quick loading and rapid track to track changes. The sound is excellent and I've had no trouble with any CD (skips, etc.) with any CD, either new or old. Minimal control on the unit but Includes a nice remote. Good value for the price.

Pros: A solid unit with great sound.

Cons: The CD tray is a little flimsy - very lightweight plastic.

Great quality player, useful USB port

Crutchfield customer from OH on 8/14/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Yamaha CD player has solid construction and a minimal but very functional design. The playback has been excellent, with good sound quality. The USB port works great, and allows you to easily play music on an iPod or iPhone. Obviously there is a clear difference between the quality of the music files, but the player does a reasonable job converting them. Overall I'm extremely happy with this player--it sounds excellent for CDs, and add versatility through the USB port.

Pros: Excellent playback of CDs, USB port, plays MP3

Cons: limited display

Wow - Great Player

John R from Panama City, FL on 5/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought my Denon player was doing a good job until it quit on me and I bought this player. All I can say is WOW! What an improvement in sound quality. It adds depth to the music and that extra "zing" to the highs and lows. Operates effortlessly. I plugged it in without reading the operator's manual and had music playing 10 minutes out of the box. Very quiet in loading and operation. Hands down, a winner CD player. Great price through Crutchfield and had it two days after ordering (VA to FL). Also, free shipping and no taxes. My only "negative" is the lighted display is centered so my glass & wood console doors hide the display. No biggie.

Pros: Good price for a quality player. Nice design without buttons you don't need. Quiet operation and loading.

Cons: None of any significance.

Simple and clean

Matt from Alexandria VA on 5/4/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The last CD player I bought was a Kenwood in 1996. It died many years ago and I substituted a DVD player. So, I have CD's I haven't heard on a "real" CD player in many years. It was time, got this Yamaha. The sound is super clean! The simplistic features are perfect. It loads fast and quietly. The USB port works great too, although I don't really need it as my receiver has one too. I have both the optical output and RCA output connected (to see the difference in "pure direct" mode) I do prefer the optical output but honestly I cannot hear a difference, even in "pure direct". There is not a whole lot of choices left for a basic CD player, this one is a terrific value.

Pros: simplistic controls display quick and quiet loading

Cons: plastic tray is flexible pure direct is somewhat gimmicky

Detailed and warm

mike from Portland, OR on 4/24/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded the budget Sony CD player in a stereo system that I've had for ~35 years (Klipsch Heresy Speakers, Yamaha CR-620 Receiver). The Sony CD player was probably 20 years old. The new Yamaha is a dramatic improvement although you would expect some improvement in CD players in 20 years. I would characterize the sound as immediate, detailed but warm - somewhat like analog which reminded me very much of that system when it used a turntable. (Some of that euphonic sound undoubtedly comes from the other system components.) The downside is that the rather large collection of burned MP3 CD's (from family members) sounds thin when compared to 44.1/16 CD's. I bought this particular player because of the iPod input feature. Members of my family have their music on their iPhones which they sometimes play back on portable blue tooth speakers. The MP3 sound thru the Yamaha DAC/ Klipsch is clearly a step up for them but I still can't listen to it. The sound from 44.1/16 CD's is that good. You're front row at the concert.

Pros: Sounds great. Simple clean design. Reliability to be determined over time.

Cons: None that I can think of

Not bad..

Terence from Philadelphia, PA on 4/11/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well lets see, you know it sounds much better than I was hoping for. Most of my CD's / digital runs the spectrum, from Jazz to Classical, Reggae to Rock, I'm all over the place musically. This handles the differences quit nicely Live or studio. At the price, it was a no brainier, and it's a Yamaha. I would recommend for anyone with eclectic price considering musical tastes.

Pros: Pure Direct USB / iPod jack in front Nice overall aesthetics

Cons: Wish there was a volume control on remote.

Great sound from this Yamaha CD player!

Glenn from Boulder, CO on 4/7/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hooked up the Yamaha CD-S300 today and I love it! It sounds great. The dynamic range and wide frequency response and low noise is apparent and very pleasing. I was concerned that I would not get the sound that I was used to from my NAD CD player, but this is at least as good (of course I don't know how good the newer NADs are and I assume they are very good too). I am playing it through an NAD 7225PE receiver into Klipsh bookshelf speakers. High frequency vocals are crystal clear as is the whole range down to low base notes. I selected this unit over the NAD 516 because of the iPhone input on this Yamaha. Now I am glad I did because the sound is great. I read in other reviews that using external USB drive for MP3's is not convenient because it does not show the folder names, or something like that, but I don't think I'll use that feature much since I really want this for my CD collection and maybe for the iPhone.

Pros: Crystal clear, great dynamic range, wide and flat frequency response and low noise.

Cons: None yet.

Simple, nicely designed

Darren from Detroit, MI on 3/5/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Simple, nicely designed, no fuss cd player with a convenient USB port on the front for a drive. Sounds great with my vintage pioneer receiver. The remote is nice especially when you're listening to music from a connected drive. I do wish the player was wav/flac/aiff compatible. Not sure why it isn't. This would have pushed the rating to five stars.

Pros: Simple design, USB port, remote control

Cons: Is not wav/aiff/flac compatible

Nice CD player while it worked.

Gerard from Round Rock, TX on 3/1/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After only 7 months of ownership (only used 8 times within those 7 months for CD playback), today I got "Unsupported" on the LCD panel with any CD I try to load (new CDs right out of the package, any one of my 500 plus -well cared for- music CDs, home burned CD-Rs or CD-RWs). Terrible quality control. This unit replaced a 15 year old Marantz CD player that finally bit the dust. I will be purchasing another Marantz CD player.

Pros: Great playback sound while it worked.

Cons: Quality control terrible.

Why spend more?

Jack from Reno, NV on 2/26/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had about two weeks. Doing a fine job. What seems to make the difference is the quality of the CD that you put into the player. Most CDs have sounded great, but a few have been sup-par, which I attribute to poor recording/mixing/mastering.

Pros: Simple, elegant. Nice remote.

Cons: So far so good.

Great sound, great functionality

Anonymous from Cedar Park, TX on 2/26/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using the CD-S300 only for playing CD's, and am very happy thus far. Discs load very quickly. Very easy to use the player without the remote. In fact, I have not even used the remote! Sound is crystal clear, and the unit makes almost zero noise. I like the USB input option, but have not yet used it. Very happy thus far (ten days).

Pros: Clear and functional controls, excellent sound.

Cons: None.

Great sound

I highly recommend this CD play. I could immediately tell a difference in the sound quality compared to an older techniques CD player and a Pioneer. Works great with my vintage Yamaha C-80 and M-80 amplifier and I love the fact that I can also connect my I-Pod to it.

Pros: Compatible with vintage amplifier. I-Pod compatible

Cons: None identified thus far.

Nice player, good features

Randall from Cuba, MO on 1/13/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a replacement for my ancient Sony player. I wanted a higher end Marantz but this was what my budget allowed and it matches my Yamaha receiver nicely. It seems well made except for the tray and no on/off from the remote. The sound is nice and clean and limited only by the source material and of course the quality of the speakers. I haven't had a chance to try the USB, which also was a selling point for me but I am going through my CD collection and enjoying them all over again. It looks like I need to upgrade my speakers now that I can really hear the difference. All in all, a nice component for my system. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a moderately priced player with quality DAC and USB port.

Pros: Sounds great, easy to use, quality DAC

Cons: None so far

Solid unit at a very reasonable price!

Craig from Mt. Vernon, OH on 12/24/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this Yamaha single disc player to replace a 20 year old Yamaha 5 disc changer. The old unit had laser issues and could not be fixed. The sound quality from the CD-S300 is a noticeable step up from the older unit. The changer was nice, but i prefer clarity anyway and the new USB port will upgrade my system. Would recommend this Yamaha to anybody who wants great sound at an affordable price.

Pros: Sound Quality from Burr Brown DAC

Cons: Remote

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this largely because of the USB/MP3 capability although I will also use it for CD's. I did not want to update my receiver to get USB and my regular CD player just quit. It works nicely, sounds good, and the interface is reasonable. It would be very nice if the folder names where directly displayed but it only uses numbers (1-256). Given that numbers are used for the folders, it would be nice to directly type the folder number to go to one but you can only get to a folder by going up/down a single folder at a time. You can see the song, artist, and album name put only by cycling through with a button on the remote. Never the less, I do have about 33 GB of MP3 music on the one device and it works well. When "random/shuffle" is enabled, it does take a while to skip to the next song in case you don't want to listen to one. Also, it does have a "resume" mode that can remember which of the songs it was playing on the CD or USB key the last time it was powered off (like in your car). There were some peculiarities like you can not stop playing the song on USB, you must just turn off the device while the song is playing for it to be remember.

Pros: + Plays songs of USB key. + Can show song title, album, artist. + Clean/simple interface.

Cons: - Can not turn on/off with remote - For USB/MP3, the folders are accessed by their number (1-255) and you can not go directly to the desired folder but must go up or down to get to the one you want.

Stunning sound!

Bob from Minneapolis, MN on 10/4/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Stunning sound. Like other reviewers I had downgraded from a dedicated cd player (wonderful machine that died of old age) to using my dvd player for cd playback. When that died, I started shopping and came across this unit. I knew I was missing something, but still surprised what what a great improvement this makes to old favorites and newer discs I've never heard played on quality equipment. The iDevice functionality is an added bonus. The S300 plays anything playing on the iDevice - from iTunes library to podcasts and streaming services - all with the same vastly improved, full sound. No more thin sounding bluetooth devices for me! I have experienced far less "digital fatigue" using the S300. Visually, the S300 is a nice addition to my other Yamaha equipment. The S300 matches my older receiver, even though it's of a much older vintage. Very happy to have found this unit at Crutchfield!

Pros: It's all good.

Cons: None after several weeks of enjoyment.

This is the one. 5 stars !!

Dick from Pawtucket, R.I. on 9/24/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Smooth, clear, elegant, beautiful flat response with perfect stereo balance. Acoustically pleasing with out any listening fatigue. No disappointments here. Forget Onkyo and Tascam, I tested all three and the others cannot come close the outstanding quality of sound from the Yamaha cd-s300. I am so impressed with this "natural sound" cd player I will most likely buy a new Yamaha receiver when/if my Marantz unit bites the dust. I mostly listen to adult contemporary music like Gordon Lightfoot, Billy Joel, Judy Collins, Mary Chapin Carpenter. My system is a Marantz 2252b receiver powering a pair of 3-way non ported speakers consisting of seas soft dome silk tweeters with variable attenuators, seas 4 inch midrange and 10 inch quam woofers. You cannot go wrong with Crutchfield, good products, good people.

Pros: Great unit and comes with 2 year warranty

Cons: Disc tray seems delicate, be careful

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read every review and every description of every CD player out there and decided on this one. My CDs had been in storage for years and I wanted to be able to enjoy my investment once again. This CD player works flawlessly with it's receiver mate the Yamaha RS300. The sound quality is marvelous. I'm hearing things on my CDs that I've never heard before. I am so glad I purchased this player !! Thanks

Pros: Sound quality, ease of use, ease of installation, good looks

Cons: The box containing both units arrived opened, skewed and without any package stuffing to keep the boxes from bouncing around against each other. I guess the peanuts fell out in transit. Maybe a little more tape to keep the packing boxes closed & secure might work? UPS guys train at the airport baggage handlers' school.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this CD player to improve my new stereo system, which started with a new turntable. Then came an upgrade on the amplifier, which was really tired... I got a Yamaha AS 301 (which I love), which eventually forced me to improve my CD player. I bought the S300 for two main reasons: the price seemed reasonable, but most importantly , its versatility is what attracted me to it. It plays CDs perfectly well, but it also plays files from your iPod/iPhone/iPad via the USB input! That is no big deal unto itself, but the beautiful thing is that it bypasses the devices DAC, and uses the CD palyer's Burr Brown DAC. Perhaps it would be difficult to tell the difference with music playing through my speakers, but I can definitely tell when listening through headphones. I am impressed with the sound! I'm discovering nuances in songs I've heard hundreds of times! Pretty impressive value for the price, I'm my opinion. Some reviewers described the disc tray as flimsy; I don't quite agree, although it could be sturdier, I suppose. I do wish it extended a little bit father out, though. But, not a deal breaker at all!

Pros: Amazing clean sound Burr Brown DAC USB input and iPod integration (and DAC bypass) Yamaha amplifier remote works well with CD player

Cons: Disc tray does not extend all the way

A great buy

Now that my children have all left toddler stage, I am rebuilding my HiFi system, I use mostly vintage gear, but wanted to pick up a good quality CD player that will last, since it is pretty clear that CD players are on the way out. Also, over the past 25 years, many of my CD's have scratches and so I wanted something that would track well. I went to my local high end dealer but was not up for the price they wanted for a rotel. I did some online research and this Yamaha CD S300 seemed to get good reviews. I figured for that price, I could give it a try. now to the point...This piece is amazing! I feel like I was only hearing half of my cd's off my old Kenwood 5-disc changer! I knew it was quality the second I picked it up; it has some heft for such a slim unit. I upgraded the RCA's and that made an additional improvement in sound. Also, the USB input on the face is nice. My wife didnt believe there would be a difference in the sound of the ipod, but there was. I played Beth Orton's Central Reservation through the old minijack - RCA and then switched and played it through the usb and it tripled the quality, even though it was only using a ~300 bit rate source material. Swap over to the same recording on CD and wow, it has never sounded better. This is probably the best value in all of audio.

Pros: USB input uses unit DAC Great sound excellent tracking

Cons: as others mentioned, the tray feels a little flimsy

Some people still play CDs!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Chose this CD player because we're old-school, still playing CDs, and needed to upgrade to a unit that would allow for TOSLINK optical output. This unit is very pretty, sleek and stylish. The transport drawer is delicate, with a shallow well (thus, three stars), but the performance is quiet and quick. I have found the unit to get surprisingly warm on top (for a CD player), which is something to consider when thinking about your component stacking order. So far, performance has been excellent, and we are hearing a real improvement from our previous antique equipment. Digital output is crisp and clean, and the mechanism seems reliable. Looking forward to many years of performance, and thankful for Crutchfield's good price and great reputation. One comment about shipping: Shipping was excellent, of course, free and quick. But multiple heavy component boxes arrived packed in one larger, bulky to lift, flimsy, lightly padded box. This was dumped out by UPS in a way that must have shaken the loosely arranged boxes inside, with only a few foam peanuts to protect them. Maybe more secure multi-item packing would be something worth looking into.

Pros: Nice looking, easy to connect, TOSLINK optical output, quiet mechanism, Crutchfield

Cons: Not true deal-killers... The drawer seems delicate, but we take care around it. Unit gets a little warm on top (for a CD player).

Solid Single Disc Player

Ken from Alexandria, VA on 3/14/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased a new stereo receiver, and soon hooked up my old 200 disc changer to it. The changer still worked, but it was still noisy, and still a pain to load the discs into. It also really wasn't built to use as a single disc player at all. So I decided to purchase the CD-S300 for its simplicity, and its compatibility with my new Yamaha receiver (R-S700). In those respects it fit the bill. Single disc makes it easy to load, and it has a quick load time. Sound is good, and I enjoy using the Pure Direct feature, in conjunction with the receivers CD Direct feature. I have some very minor quibbles about the integration of the receiver's remote with the player, but they really have more to do with the receiver's remote than the player. I haven't used the USB port. If you're looking for a basic player, with good sound, this is a nice choice.

Pros: Simple, quick playback Pure Direct Decent integration with Yamaha receiver remote.

Cons: No on/off via remote

Excellent value

Jim K from springfield, IL on 3/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to pair with a Yamaha AV receiver so I could listen to cd's when not watching movies. It has a warm, musical sound that is nicely balanced from the top end all the way down to the bottom and delivers plenty of detail. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't sound as musically involving as some of the more expensive players I've heard, but at the price I really wasn't expecting that.

Pros: warm and detailed sound, ability to play cd-rom loaded with mp3's

Cons: not quite as involving as top of the line players

A Great CD Player

John B. from pulaski, VA on 3/6/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thanks to Crutchfield reviews, I decided to purchase the Yamaha CD-S300. At first I thought about a multi-disk device, but I am very pleased I chose this player. What a simple set up! It has played every CD I have loaded. The sound quality is magnificent. While technology may advance, this player is ideal for those who want to listen to CDs without confusion. The on-board "buttons" are easy to use. The remote is great.

Pros: The best CD player I have ever owned -- and at a good price. Easy set up. Great sound with my Klipsch Reference Bookcase speakers.

Cons: None at all.

For the price, I expected better, allot better.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been using a 150 dollar well built solid cd changer/transport Sony 5-disc player I bought new when I bought my Yamaha R-S700 receiver. For the price paid it worked well sounded ok too. That said it didn't match my receiver. Bought the Yamaha CD-S300, matched the look of the receiver perfectly, receiver remote works too. Now for the fair and bad. Sound wise, my ears cant hear much difference, if any between the sony bought at half the price and the yamaha, as I said it sounds ok. Now the Yamaha's CD transport/cd tray is about as cheap as they come, is of the same build quality as you might on a 40 dollar dvd player or a cheap 25 dollar computer cd-drive. Not sure how long the transport will last, it feels as if it will snap when placing a cd in place, not expecting much durability here. A replacement transport most likely can be bought cheaply but I expected more on a 300 dollar machine. I'm not planning on returning it, it does match and the next step up is 800 dollars for the Yamaha cd-s700. I will be looking for replacement drive/transports though to be prepared for the inevitable broken transport. In the end at a 300 dollar price point I wasn't expecting a metal cd tray but I wasn't expecting the cheapest plastic one available either.

Pros: Cosmetically matches my Yamaha R-S700. My Yamaha Receiver's remote operates the CD player.

Cons: Very cheap CD Transport/Shelf.

Great CD Player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After unboxing and setting up an old Yamaha A/V Receiver (HTR-4150), Bose AM-5 Speakers, Yamaha AST Powered Subwoofer, and several cases of CD's that have been in storage for well over 8 years (lived overseas), I wanted a basic, single CD player again. I chose this Yamaha CD player because I wanted something that was quality that integrated well to my old Yamaha A/V Receiver and that had a chance for the receiver remote to control it (I hate multiple remotes and it did control it!) for a reasonable price. My first impression was that is felt lighter than I expected but overall seems to be well built. The sound quality is excellent and far exceeds my expectations. I liked the idea of having a pure-direct mode that shuts off all displays and unnecessary features to maximize sound quality. However, I utilized the optical-digital connection on my receiver and found out that pure mode only works with RCA/analog connections. I guess one day I should switch the connections and try the pure mode to see if it makes a difference. Other than that, this is exactly what I hoped for and more.

Pros: Sound quality, simplicity, and build quality without being super expensive.

Cons: Would be nice if "pure-direct" mode worked on optical-digital connection.

Sweet Sound

Jtcgolf55 from Germantown, TN on 2/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned several cd players since 1987. This one has the sweetest, most natural sound of all of them. I bought it to replace a player I've been using for about 10 years, and immediately noticed the improvement. My system is near-audiophile quality, so I did not think much improvement was even possible, but somehow I find myself continually amazed at the staging, tone, and balance of the sound coming from cd's I've listened to dozens of times in the past. Also, the usb input is a nice touch, I've used it a few times, it will probably be outdated soon (bluetooth/infrared inputs will be the norm), but for now it is useful. The control buttons are ever smaller, it seems, but as I tend to use the remote more than the buttons on the machine, this is not a problem. I would give the player 5 stars except for the following event: yesterday I inserted a 10-yr old disc which plays perfectly on my other players, but was not readable in the first two tries by this one. (I took it out, cleaned it lightly, put it back, still did not play; took it out again, cleaned it thoroughly, put it back, then it played.) If this persists with other discs, the player may be going back.

Pros: Great sound.

Cons: Could not read one of my discs. Hope this doesn't problem doesn't persist.

Yamaha Natural Sound Compact Disc Player CD-S300

Edward C. from Bear Creek, PA on 2/3/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this product because I wanted a compact outboard DAC and it was very difficult to find one. The tech and I looked at several that might work but this one was a winner. It allowed me to plug my Generation 6 I-Pod via USB plug right in the front of the unit. The sound was incredible this I can confirm because I played an LP on the same song & time as the I-Pod. This allowed me to switch back & forth between the Analog LP and the Digital I-Pod. I was stunned. Never did I think that the I-Pod would even be close to the turntable. Again, I was stunned because it was very close to the sound quality of the LP. Even as a CD player, the sound is better than any modern CD player I've ever heard. I collect vintage stereos but also have CD's and many MP3's stored on my I-Pod and I-Pad. Anyone wanting to hear what a recording should sound like that has been compressed to MP3 levels needs to run it through this Yamaha CD S300, you'll be shocked at the sound stage, deep bass, crisp highs and lifelike vocals. It truly was the smartest move I could have made and I owe it to Kevin, the tech that helped me with the purchase. I had looked for something like this for over two months when all I has to do is start right with Crutchfield. They have helped me with car stereo selection and installation before and in my opinion are second to none. Respectfully, Edward C.

Pros: Sound quality is probably the best you'll ever hear from a digital source for a price under $1000

Cons: The remote should be black to match the CD player but I could hardly call that a con!

Exactly What I Was Looking For

The CD S300 is a great addition to my system. I was previously using an older model Sony DVD player and thought that it worked well. I was amazed at what a difference having a dedicated CD player is. The sound quality is phenomenal compared to the Sony DVD. I like the fact that I can hook my iPhone or other mobile device to the front panel. The only complaint is that the controls are not light do it can be challenging if your equipment is not in a well lighted area.

After my Yamaha CD player from the 1980s died years ago I made the mistake of running to a big box store and simply buying a portable CD player to hook into my Yamaha receiver. (hey, we all make mistakes). That cheapo player finally died and I came to my senses. Everything sounds so much better with the Yamaha CD-S300. I'm writing this review for folks who haven't owned a quality player. Do yourself a favor and buy the Yamaha CD-S300. Outstanding CD Player

C-Lover from Washington on 1/5/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha CD-S300 CD player operates flawlessly with clean, uncolored sound quality. It neither adds nor subtracts anything from the CD source and seems impervious to physical shock. Its physical construction is exceptionally solid, well beyond its price point, and its appearance is beautiful. The CD-S300 CD player has no standby mode so that it cannot be turned on or off using the remote nor does it include a headphone jack. However, these two features are not important to me and I was aware of these omissions at the time of my purchase. For me, the CD-S300 CD player is an outstanding value. I feel compelled to state that I have the highest respect for Crutchfield. Upon contacting them about the problems I was experiencing with the Cambridge Topaz CD player I had originally ordered, Crutchfield immediately sent out the above referenced Yamaha replacement CD player without even charging my credit card and simultaneously sent me the UPS return label and RMA number. This is incredible service that I consider simply peerless in the industry. Quite frankly, I would gladly pay a somewhat higher price to deal with Crutchfield. Thank you Crutchfield!

Pros: Flawless operation, superb sound quality, exceptionally solid construction.

Cons: No standby mode or headphone jack.

I have been thinking of buying a CD player for a while and finally decided to do my homework and make a purchase. I did not want to break the bank, and you can, and I did not want a multiple CD player. I also wanted one with a built in DAC. After all my homework I decided on the Yamahs S300. Good value, good quality, and the built in DAC I wanted. I will repeat what I have heard others say when listening to CD's with a quality player, "I hear things I never heard before". I do a lot of streaming and running my ipad/phone through the DAC on the CD player really makes the music come alive.

Pros: great value for the money, built in DAC, nice looks, and it looks good with my yamaha receiver.

Cons: No on/off switch on the remote.

I am usually a vinyl fan and like listening vinyl records. I always had a compact disc for much worse medium than LP, because I always listened CDs on a cheap players. I was thinking to buy a decent CD player and chose the Yamaha CDS300 because I know that brand Yamaha is granting good quality and the price was very affordable. When I get the unit and started listening my CD collection, I couldn`t believe my ears. It sounds practicaly the same as vinyl, 24-bit DAC does a great job. You have to know that Yamaha has a "know how" and many components inside that player are the same as in more expensive Yamaha CD players, because it is more cheap to produce the same version for all. It is great product!!

Pros: Great warm sound, easy to operate, build like a tank no cheap feeling.

I chose this product to pair to bring my old Carver (analog) receiver out of storage and provide capability for iPod connection. I wanted a functional item at a modest price from a reputable company, and this item matches on all accounts. I have been happy with the ease of set-up and the quality of sound. It has been fun to once again experience the warmth of analog stereo sound from digital sources. I rate 4 stars purely because this item is not intended to provide the highest quality audio performance, but is very good at what it does provide.

Cons: None yet identified, it meets my expectations

Who Needs Vinyl?

JohnM from Near Philly on 8/8/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK, Alright. Let's get this out of the way first. The CD tray is a bit flimsy and I guess it would nice if it extended out another 1/4 inch. My suggestion: Don't let your drunk friends and children load the cd player. But it takes less care to load this cd player than it takes to handle a vinyl LP. It's actually very easy. I know that vinyl is back and has become all the rage. But don't let anyone convince you that vinyl is better than a digital recording. There are some early cds out there that don't sound as warm as vinyl and there are some newer "compressed" recordings that aren't so good. But there is no contest. A well recorded and mastered cd played through this Yamaha through a good amplifier will leave vinyl in the dust. The Yamaha CD S300 has the warmth of vinyl and the detail of digital. Anyone who has paid attention would realize that over the last few years there have been serious advances made in moderately priced cd players. You can read countless reviews of people saying that getting their new player was like getting a whole new cd collection. This Yamaha is a no-brainer. I know all about the Onkyo 7030 (great deal) and the Teac 750 (had one for a while; very good player; returned it for a problem that may not have been the player's fault). Those players don't quite have the "warmth" of the Yamaha. It does great with rock music of all kinds. But acoustic, classical, and jazz, along with rock, really shine in this player. Ready for a great sound?

Pros: Warm and detailed sound Better than vinyl Yamaha Quality 2 year warranty Ipod/Iphone capability

Cons: The tray ... maybe

Am using this in conjunction with a Yamaha R-S300 receiver. It is very well matched. Love its simplicity to no end. Have not tried the USB port, nor was it why I purchased the unit. Just wanted a simple straight forward single CD player. Thankfully, that is exactly what I got. Love the Pure Direct mode. Do not be concerned about the display panel light going out in this mode. The owners manual explains this, and when you make adjustments it temporarily comes back on to let you know what you just did. Very easy to connect to a receiver. Superb player for the money

Topcat from Rowley Regis on 10/24/2013

I needed a new CD player after my older one gave up...I used to have a Yamaha before many years ago and it gave me a great sound way back after some reviewing and a test at my local Hi-Fi shop I knew I was making the right decision with this one. It came well packaged and I already knew how well made this was having auditioned it earlier..I chose to use the Optical Out instead of the phono out...the Optical is way better and more detailed in every way.. the pnono gives a more cloudy sound...It has a internal DAC and does a great job of converting the digital signal back to Analogue...Someone wrote the sound was crap...he has no idea what he's talking about...this CD player has clarity and precision and the soundstaging is spot on..The bass is also very authoritive..not to much and not to little...Someone also mentioned the speed of this player...I agree to some's Not instant in reading and playing a CD or reading the USB stick or Ipod on the initial insertion...but once loaded,it's as quick as any other player responding quickly to changing tracks etc etc...There's also a 'Pure' out button...this turns the display off and bypasses any internal interference to give you the purist sound it can....and it delivers without hesitation...but it only works on the CD..not the USB...It also reads MP3 and WMA..which is all you should's been built with giving quality sound in mind and it does this very well indeed....You will also find it will need some running in...around 20 hours should do it..after this you will find all the detail and incredible sound this CD player can deliver...I've been listening to this player through my Fiio amp/DAC on my AKG 702 headphones and it makes them sound amazing, and it also sounds great through my main amp powering my Monitor Audio BX 5'S..I highly recoomend this CD Player..!!! If you want to achieve a better sound your going to have to pay some serious money out to do so to notice much difference..So in conclusion..I highly recommend this beautifully made and sounding CD player..Cheers.

Pros: Great clarity of sound..Bass is authoritative but not over the top and the soundstaging just right.Build quality is first class too.

Cons: A small gripe was not having an off/on button on remote...Other then that...nothing at all.

Bob B from Brownsville, FL on 8/18/2013

It's a solid device with a couple of questionable design features.

Pros: Plays CDs Quality build

Cons: Overpriced for a single play machine Remote does not include an on/off feature "Boot up" is slow and ignores your commands until it has gone thru the motions

This is a nice litle unit!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently built a cover for my patio. Needed a good CD player to play music while entertaining. Besides superior quality sound from CD's the convenient UBS plug in .keeps me in the party and not changing CD's. The sonic quality is clear, neutral and clear. I like this player for the price,

Pros: UBS input.

Cons: None found.

great product

KM from Newburg, MD on 5/8/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a very good CD player to replace one that I bought in the early 90's. I did a lot of research to find the right kink of player for us. I found this one and decided this was the one for us. It has a USB port for out I-pod which is just way too great. It plays all the CD's the old one didn't. So glad I found this one.

Pros: Great sound production. I'm hearing music I've not been able to hear before.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Great Deal

JHolbrook from Spring,TX on 4/19/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha SD300 sounded great and the USB port worked perfectly with my .wma files. This CD player replaces a 25 year old Carver CD player that finally died. You can not go wrong with this product for the price.

Pros: Price, Overall sound Quality and USB port.

Cons: Wish it had a larger screen for viewing files on the USB drive.

Great CD player

Jim L from Wall, NJ on 2/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome sound quality and the MP3 USB port on the front for connecting music players like iPod, Zen, iPhone etc is the best. Still have a lot of CDs but also tons of music on our MP3 Creative Zen and it works like a charm. No sound loss through the USB port. Connected to Nakamichi receiver and BOSE 901s. Rattles the windows.

Pros: Nice sleek design, some weight - quality product, but not heavy by any means. Front USB port. Great sound, Awesome remote that also works with MP3 to change songs

Cons: none yet. There are cheaper CD players but you get what you pay for.

Great Sounding CD Player

CarlH from San Antonio, TX on 12/6/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sounding CD player for the price (or even for a few hundred dollars more). I have only had it a few days, and I am sure it will open up even more after playing it for several hours, but it sounds great now (very high end sound). I am running it through the highly rated Yamaha A-S500 integrated amplifier through B&W 604 floor standing speakers. I purchased this from Crutchfield, which is rock solid. I also have a Music Hall 2.2 that I purchased from Crutchfield that I run through this system. I love dealing with Crutchfield.

Pros: Price and sound.

Cons: None thus far.

Quality Construction

Quality Construction

Sophisticated Circuitry & Layout: Yamaha technicians devoted a great deal of time and effort to designing the overall interior layout of parts and circuit boards, a factor that significantly affects sound quality. As a result, the power supplies for the motor drive, display and USB sections, as well as the digital, and analog sections are individually isolated, eliminating electromagnetic interference among them. To achieve ideal weight balance for stable performance, the drive mechanism is located in the center of the unit.

High Quality Parts: Yamaha puts a great deal of effort into the selection and matching of parts and materials. A high-grade acoustic capacitor, a new low noise/high-gain bandwidth op amp, and the use of damping material under the transformer and around the signal cables are just a few examples of Yamaha's commitment to great sound quality.

Short Signal Paths: The highly logical and symmetrical internal layout of parts and circuit boards are designed to keep the signal paths on each board as short as possible. This purposeful design also keeps the paths between sections straight and short, minimizing the chance of signal loss or interference.

Laser Pickup Floating Mechanism: The laser pickup is isolated on a floating mechanism so its delicate operation cannot be affected by vibration.

Intelligent Digital Servo System: This type of system uses a microcomputer to monitor the signal, adjusting pickup tracking and focus, as well as spindle motor speed, to compensate for any problems.

Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz DAC: The Yamaha CD-S300 CD player employs a Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz DAC ensuring excellent conversion precision, S/N ratio, and dynamic range.

Disc Compatibility

CD Compatibility: The Yamaha CD-S300 CD player will play CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs (12cm or 8cm).

CD Text: When a CD Text encoded CD is played, this unit will display the CD Text information - disc title, artist name, and track name.

MP3/WMA Playback: The CD-S300 supports playback of compressed MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (16-320 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 format. The CD player can recognize up to 256 folders, 512 filers per folder, and a maximum of 999 total files.

LCD Display: The Yamaha CD player features a front-panel LCD display that shows the current status of the unit. You can select from elapsed time of the current track, remaining time of the current track, or the remaining time of the disc. You can also temporarily display the filename of your MP3/WMA files up to 28 characters. The front-panel display offers 4 brightness settings.

Pure Direct: The CD-S300 offers Pure Direct, which is the same popular feature included in Yamaha amplifiers and receivers. By pressing the button on the front panel or on the remote control, it shuts down the digital audio output and turns off the display. This achieves the lowest possible noise interference and, therefore, the highest sound quality of the analog audio output.

Playback Modes: The CD-S300 offers the following playback modes.

  • Program: You can customize the playback order of up to 24 track store on an Audio CD. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
  • Random: You can play back tracks in random sequence from and Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
  • Repeat: You can play back a single track or all tracks repeatedly from a Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
  • Repeat A-B: You can repeat a specified section of a track on an audio CD. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
  • Ready Mode: Pauses playback after each track, allowing you to start the next rack at any desired time.
Note: This unit retains the current Repeat & Random playback mode after turning off the power.

Search Functions: The CD-S300 offers the following search functions.

  • Direct Search: You can enter the desired track number for an Audio CD using the numeric keypad (0-9) on the remote control. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
  • Skip: You can skip to the beginning of the current, next, or previous track of an audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
  • Fast Forward/Reverse: You can rapidly advance or reverse through a track on an Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device. Each time you press the search key, the search speed increases by 2 levels.

Remote Control: The Yamaha CD-S300 single disc CD player comes with a full-function IR remote control for wireless operation of the unit. The remote has a range up to 20 feet with an angle of 30-degrees to the left and right of the unit's front-panel IR eye.

Analog Audio Output: The Yamaha CD player is equipped with one set of stereo RCA jacks.

Digital Audio Output: The Yamaha CD-S300 features a optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital output.

USB Port: The USB port on the front panel allows you to play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (16-320 kbps) music files from a USB memory device (flash drive), card reader, or portable audio player that use FAT16/FAT32 format. The unit will recognize up to 256 folders, 512 files per folder, and a maximum of 32,767 total files. The unit's USB port supports basic playback controls, such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Skip (Next/Previous); as well as folder and track select.

iPod/iPhone Compatible: The Yamaha CD player's USB port also supports playback of your iPod/iPhone's music files (via the USB/dock cable supplied with  your iPod). The CD-S300 offers audio playback, basic control (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Previous/Next) and charging of your iPod. Advanced navigation is still done through your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. Artist and song information will need to be viewed on your connected iPod's LCD screen. The Yamaha CD-S300 is "made for iPod/iPhone" compliant and supports the following iPod/iPhone models and functions (as of 9/27/2012):

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I noticed other Merchants not having quality inventory and selection like Crutchfield has . [ Primo  Dec 09, 2018 ]
I mix songs (via a mixer) with two CD players and record to a recordable player. One of the CD players is already this model, and the other player an old Sony player (very old). The sound of the Yahama player is dramatically better, to the point of being very noticeable when mixing songs from one player to the other. Having two of the same model will take care of the sound discrepancy. [ Brian  Nov 27, 2018 ]
Suggested by Travis & read the reviews. Needed a solid CD player to be able to play the old CD collection [ DAVID  Nov 26, 2018 ]

I need a new CD player that wasn't going to break the bank. [ Brian  Oct 26, 2018 ]
Price point, have Yamaha receiver already [ DOUGLAS P  Sep 29, 2018 ]
Unit was a reasonable price and features. Tina recommended it. [ SHERI  Sep 23, 2018 ]
To match my Yamaha receiver & because of the superb DAC contained in this player. [ Mark  Sep 10, 2018 ]
Positive reviews. Comes highly recommended. [ Alfred  Aug 25, 2018 ]
Seems like exactly what I want for a good price. Good return policy if I don't like it. [ isobel  Jul 15, 2018 ]
I am pairing this with the Yamaha R-S202 stereo receiver. The price was a bit more than I would have preferred to spend, however this seems like a solid performing unit. I contemplated getting a multi-disc changer but opted for the single-disc. I like the USB input on the front, and while the unit appears utilitarian as opposed to sleek, it should fit in perfectly with the other components. [ JUSTIN  Jul 14, 2018 ]
I just want a CD player to play classic jazz not available on vinyl. I have no SACD's. I have found that the Yamaha brand is reliable. [ WILLIAM  Jun 24, 2018 ]
Great reviews - a simple uncomplicated entry level CD player that's performs well. Sometimes simplicity overcomes the complexity of more touted and expensive brands. [ Gary  Jun 24, 2018 ]
General brand reputation, positive reviews, features. [ Michael  Jun 20, 2018 ]
DAC [ Christopher  Jun 11, 2018 ]
It fit into the cabinet space I had available the alternative products did not fit. [ Kyle  Apr 27, 2018 ]
Consistently Good reviews of sound. iPod/iPhone usb input [ DANIEL A  Apr 26, 2018 ]
My final decision was made based on two things. One being my trust in certain manufacturers based on previous experience, The second involves my scan of product reviews and user's general thoughts about their on-going experience with the item. When I put that all together, thanks to your site's wealth of information, I was able to select the component that I felt best met my needs. In this case, the Yamaha CD-S300 single disk player. [ Don A.  Apr 23, 2018 ]
have Yamaha amp integrated well [ Frederick  Apr 12, 2018 ]
It seems to be a simple piece of equipment, but when you see at the specifications it is as competitive as other models more expensive. Besides that, I have been using Yamaha products for a while, and they are high quality. [ David  Apr 01, 2018 ]
I'm a senior citizen on a fixed income and the price for the quality appealed to me. I was looking at another player of the same price, however, the front USB port was the deal breaker. I have another setup in a different room with the USB port on the receiver. Being able to listen to music all night without touching the equipment is nice. [ Donald  Mar 20, 2018 ]
Read reviews, fit my budget, NED was out of stock, in addition I had previously bought a Yamaha amp so it will match well. [ Greg  Mar 07, 2018 ]
I chose this because of the usb capability so I can play my iPod and iPhone through it. [ Grant Edward  Feb 19, 2018 ]
I own a Yamaha R-S700 Receiver/Amp with which I'm very happy. My Sony CD unit has been failing repeatedly, even after repairs. So this Yamaha CD-S300 was an obvious choice. [ Gordon  Jan 30, 2018 ]
For the money, this has an excellent sound. Replacing a 15 year old NAD. [ wendell  Jan 08, 2018 ]

I love music and care deeply about getting a pure sound. I prefer vinyl, but some material these days only comes out on cd. When looking for a good cd player, I particularly have been looking at brands. My first receiver was a 1980 Yamaha R-500 which was my dads favorite receiver. After buying two of them I moved on to the more powerful newer Yamaha Amplifier A-S500. As my cd collection has grown, I have chosen this fine Yamaha CD-S300. Yamaha has served me well, and I want more of it. [ Benjamin  Mar 21, 2017 ]
I know the name Yamaha from my husbands stereo systems. [ Janice  Mar 11, 2017 ]
I amSetting up a two channel listening room. [ Brian  Mar 06, 2017 ]
Felt confident that this bottom of the line unit would be totally satisfactory. I was right. [ Jack  Mar 03, 2017 ]
I have owned YAMAHA products for over 30 years and all are still working great! This is my second CD-S300. The original is still working fine but I needed a second player and was thinking of the multi-player CD-C600. Unfortunately the CD-C600 is too large for the space I have so I opted for another 300. I know what I am getting with YAMAHA and am very satisfied. [ James  Feb 21, 2017 ]
I have vintage Yamaha equipment that has been trouble free and still sounds fantastic. Great reviews on this new Yamaha CD player. [ Bert  Feb 12, 2017 ]
LOVE YAMAHA EQUIPMENT! [ Michael  Jan 25, 2017 ]
Was a toss-up between this and NAD. I've used NAD CD players in the past and was very, very happy with them, but the USB port on the face of the Yamaha is what sold me on this particular model. Let's hope it sounds as good as the NAD did. [ Duane  Jan 23, 2017 ]
To go with the Yamaha R-N500 receiver I bought last year. I like the sound and the operation of the Yamaha including the design of the iPhone app. [ David  Jan 20, 2017 ]
Yamaha quality, and well laid out controls. [ Carlos  Jan 20, 2017 ]
My old Sony CD player still works, but it doesn't like CD-R discs and of course it doesn't know what MP3 discs are. [ PETER  Jan 18, 2017 ]
Moderately priced and the 5 disc carousel tray sticks after a certain amount of time, so I went with a single disc tray instead. [ Glenn  Jan 07, 2017 ]
Known brand quality. Simplicity of both front and back panels. [ Robert  Dec 30, 2016 ]
Needed a quality CD player at affordable price- iPhone connectivity a plus [ Aleksandar  Dec 28, 2016 ]
Price, positive reviews and ipod compatibility [ William  Dec 25, 2016 ]
Relatively inexpensive. Good reviews. I like Yamaha. [ Andy  Dec 10, 2016 ]
This was well recommended by an friend who builds loud speakers. He also has a Yamaha, but a higher model. [ Mary K.  Dec 05, 2016 ]
I had an earlier version of it for a long time, which worked well for me. I like that it is a single cd player. [ Marie  Dec 02, 2016 ]
Reviews were good. [ Kate  Nov 28, 2016 ]
I hope I've bought a highly rated, uncomplicated cd player. My BOSE player died after 17 years, and I didn't want to have to mortgage the house to buy a replacement. [ ann marie  Nov 26, 2016 ]
Wanted something to play USB/MP3/WMA and did not want a new receiver or have to use the TV to select songs. 20 year old JVC 6+1 changer died 2 weeks ago. Could use my BD player for CD/USB, do not want to turn the TV on and it is somewhat slow for CD playback. Hopefully, this player will be faster. This was the cheapest one offered by Crutchfield. There are only a few others cheaper on the market that support USB but they don't have the same features/capabilities or as many positive reviews. [ DALLAS  Nov 01, 2016 ]
Have a 801 receiver, needed a good cd player to match! [ WILLIAM S  Oct 15, 2016 ]
Abe also commented this for the sound quality and it will work good with my Yamaha receiver. [ mark  Oct 02, 2016 ]
quality and sound [ Sandar  Sep 13, 2016 ]
my receiver is a Yamaha,so now I only need one remote. [ J  Aug 16, 2016 ]
I read several reviews on this piece CD player. It seems to be a bargain at $299. Also it should match up with the yamaha RS700 receiver I also purchased. [ Charles  Aug 09, 2016 ]
Reviews were solid, matches perfectly with the yamaha amp I will be buying soon. [ Joseph David  Jul 29, 2016 ]
I've always been impressed with Yamaha products...more and more manufacturers are getting away from certain products and to find a single tray CD player with a USB input is outstanding for my needs....not to mention a great price for this too [ richard  Jul 16, 2016 ]
Best reviews on Crutchfield and other sites, Burr-Brown DAC and value for $$$. [ Gerard  Jul 02, 2016 ]
Not an super audiophile, but always bought Yamaha. I think it's sound is the best. [ Donald  Jun 10, 2016 ]
Good previous experience with Crutchfield. [ Gary  Jun 03, 2016 ]
reviews, price and weight [ David  May 17, 2016 ]
Read reviews from different sites and high positive reviews seem to be the norm. Matches the R300 receiver I own as well. [ Roger  May 01, 2016 ]
Previous experience with Yamaha products and USB connection on front panel [ Jeffrey  Apr 11, 2016 ]
good value, decent acoustics, reliable brand [ Barry  Mar 03, 2016 ]
A reasonable price for a decent quality CD player with smaller dimensions that fit my space. [ Richard  Feb 27, 2016 ]
I was looking for a reasonably priced CD player with a good DAC and signal-to-noise ratio. It was a choice between the NAD C516BEE or the Yamaha CD-S300. The two players have very similar specs. I decided to go with the Yamaha as it also offers a USB input to connect your iPod/digital music player. [ Sunitha  Feb 21, 2016 ]
I had Yamaha equipment in the past. It lasted 37+ years and is still going strong. I recently purchased new Yamaha receiver to replace original. Great quality. Reasonably priced. [ William  Jan 21, 2016 ]
Because it is one of your best seller [ Reynaldo  Jan 20, 2016 ]
Matching Component [ Robert  Jan 10, 2016 ]
This is a simple 'no frills' item that does an excellent job without incorporating unnecessary features. I'm happier without a multitude of buttons to push and flashing lights. Simple principle; there's less to go wrong! [ Jonathan  Jan 01, 2016 ]
This unit seems to have the best specifications for the price. [ Charles  Dec 31, 2015 ]
Price and Brand recognition...alredy own Yamaha products! [ Jose M.  Dec 26, 2015 ]
My existing CD player turntable would not open. [ Joseph  Dec 21, 2015 ]
good brand a good reviews and after getting it. it sounds natural I like it better them my 6005 [ JOHN  Dec 19, 2015 ]

3.5" tall, 17 1/8" wide, 10" deep (case dimension) [ Alan  Dec 19, 2017 ]
The official specs of the Yamaha CD-S300 list the dimensions as [17-1/8-inches w x 3-1/8-inches h x 10-1/4-inches d]. I always add a couple of inches to the depth to account for connections. And I'd note that the unit runs warm, and so it might like an extra inch of ventilation space above it in a stack or rack. I have found it to be an excellent, smooth-working, high-resolution CD player, especially when connected via toslink/optical. [ M  Dec 16, 2017 ]
From the Crutchfield Site, the dimensions are: 17-1/8"W x 3-3/8"H x 11-1/2"D. [ Mark  Dec 16, 2017 ]
17 1/8 w x 9 7/8 d (excluding rear jacks) x 3 3/8 tall (including feet) [ Richard  Dec 16, 2017 ]
Don't know if it would. I imagine the remotes are pretty similar but can't say for sure that that the R- S500 remote will work the S-300. Jack [ JACK  Oct 03, 2016 ]
Mark, unfortunately I have no idea as I have only tried he remote which came with the unit. Perhaps one of the Crutchfield "Ask an Expert" folks can help. Go the the Crutchfield website for contact info which this response will not permit me to list. Sorry. Don [ Don  Oct 03, 2016 ]
Sorry I can't help you, but I don't know the answer to that. [ Susan  Oct 03, 2016 ]
If you have seperate Controls on your receiver to select either the digital or the analog inputs I dont see why this should not be ok. [ MICHAEL  Jul 05, 2016 ]
The manual says that the digital outputs are disabled when the mode "Pure Direct" is turned on. Pure Direct is a feature that turns off most of the panel indicators. It reduces electrical noise that can appear (at very low level) in the output signal. When using Pure Direct, the manual says use the analog outputs. I infer from this that when Pure Direct is off, both analog and digital outputs are active. A Wiki article on S/PDIF says S/PDIF is unidirectional, so the receiver could not reply to the CD player to turn the digital signal on and off. The player has both fiber optic digital output and coaxial (RCA connector) digital output, so both are unidirectional S/PDIF. [ Philip  Jul 05, 2016 ]
I think your receiver will only use an analogue input. The CD Player is taking a digital signal and converting it to an analogue signal through the use of a D/A converter. That said, your CD player is sending your receiver an analogue signal. Suggest you use your CD input or Aux input to read your CD player. [ Charles  Jul 05, 2016 ]
I don't know whether it works or not as I have a MS Lumia 640 and have never tried to use the feature. I have had numerous problems attempting to employ my Harmony universal control through my entertainment center, but that may be due to my ineptness. Sorry I wasn't any help! Curt [ Curtiss  Jun 27, 2016 ]
Yes, it works well with the iPhone. You just plug your iPhone into the CD player using a lightning/USB cord (the normal charging cord) and enable USB input on the CD player (press the CD/USB button). You can then easily play iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, etc., through your CD player. [ Tom  Jun 27, 2016 ]
i never used it this way with my iPhone. I imagine it would though if there is an app. Check the App Store. [ PETER R  Jun 27, 2016 ]
Yes. The feed to the CD player via USB is digital and will be decoded by the CD player. Further, if you have an outboard third-party DAC, you can feed the digital output from the iPhone through the CD-S300 to the DAC using the CD-S300's digital output. [ Tom  Jun 27, 2016 ]
Sorry, no idea. I am an android user. [ DAVID  Aug 06, 2015 ]
Yes. Just plug the iPod into the CD player using the iPod's USB charging cord. Works like a champ. [ Tom  Jun 27, 2016 ]
Good news. It is compatible with the iPod Classic. You can get a full breakdown of compatibility on the "Details" tab. [ Jeff  May 04, 2015 ]  Staff
Hi-- I'm sorry, but I can not answer this question. I purchased the YAMAHA CD S300 for my 83 year old Dad- an older audio-file. He has other components including a high end turntable. He has never used the iPod ( although he has one). I can tell you that the quality of this product like all YAMAHA products is superb. I set it up with him and have used it while visiting his house. I am very impressed and he is very happy with it. I hope someone can answer your question. Perhaps YAMAHA has a customer service phone number or email. [ Wendy  May 04, 2015 ]
The Yamaha CD-S300 is designed for MP3 and WMA version 8 and 9 files loaded onto USB flash drives. It will not play these files if they are copyright-protected. It does accept the FLAC PCM format loaded on USB flash drives, but I don't know to what resolution. I don't use the USB port myself. I generally just shove a CD into it which it plays beautifully. Sorry, I'm old school and prefer an LP or CD to downloaded copies. I still wish quadraphonic had caught on. [ GLENN  Sep 21, 2014 ]
Sorry don't know as I have only played cd's through it-it does a mighty fine job of that though. [ Eric  Sep 18, 2014 ]
no [ JOSEPH A  Sep 17, 2014 ]
I believe no because a search of the 'net and since I owned the unit since last October, I couldn't play FLAC, but I believe Yamaha cd-s700 does. Hope this helps. [ KENNETH  Sep 17, 2014 ]
This player does not play split track cds that I am aware of. It does play all other cds that I own, including hybrid cds. [ H. KEITH  Aug 17, 2014 ]
Yes as long as it is in one of the formats listed in the description of the player; CD CDR CDRW from what I understand about split track cd's it will play any CD, including split track. You can also google it about this specific player to see what it says Kevin. Also, this is an excellent player that I have had since last October and I love CD's still so the single disc player usb/cd option being able to play music from a flash drive is awesome with a great design can't go wrong here Kevin. I hope I helped. Sincerely. Ken. [ KENNETH  Aug 17, 2014 ]
Thank you Krissy. That is good advice. [ larry  Mar 21, 2014 ]

I'm sorry , I just don't know about turntable connectivity with this unit . Otherwise, I have been happy so far . [ ROSS  Dec 26, 2013 ]
Yes [ THOMAS  Dec 24, 2013 ]
if your turntable has RCA out put cables I'm sure it will connect and work well. I play my i pod thru the Z-580 using the RCA cables that came with the 580 and a RCA to 3.5 adapter. [ GARY L  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Sorry, not sure, haven't tried via a laptop [ JAMES T  Dec 18, 2013 ]
Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure it will! I play Pandora on my Ipad, and it plays through the usb port just fine. Also, you can get a thumb drive/flash drive. Download your music content on that, then plug into usb port and it will play! Hope that helps! Happy Holidays! [ MICHAEL  Dec 18, 2013 ]
that's what the port is for [ JOSEPH A  Dec 18, 2013 ]
Yes [ TREVIN  Dec 18, 2013 ]
Hi Craig happy to answer your question. I just bought this player 1 month ago and it's awesome but I just tried usb to usb on pc and unless you use a memory stick usb with files copied from your computer usb to usb does not detect no mtter what I disabled and re-enabled pc speakers the whole deal. I have a sonh vaio laptop if that helps. If your not used to knowing ho to download and copy files to a memory stick a good one to buy is PNY 8 gb can hold up to 1500 songs! I have about 800 half used. I would recommend this CD player. Happy Holidays! Ken Allen. [ KENNETH  Dec 18, 2013 ]
no. search for a "B" USB input....USB A to B.....(the square USB)......i recommend a separate DAC. Crutchfield sells the Cambridge DAC Magic 100, i own it and it works great. Peace. [ michael  Dec 18, 2013 ]
Yes it plays MP3 on a usb stick I use. But the CD' sound better. [ JOSEPH  Dec 18, 2013 ]
