Quality Construction

Sophisticated Circuitry & Layout: Yamaha technicians devoted a great deal of time and effort to designing the overall interior layout of parts and circuit boards, a factor that significantly affects sound quality. As a result, the power supplies for the motor drive, display and USB sections, as well as the digital, and analog sections are individually isolated, eliminating electromagnetic interference among them. To achieve ideal weight balance for stable performance, the drive mechanism is located in the center of the unit.

High Quality Parts: Yamaha puts a great deal of effort into the selection and matching of parts and materials. A high-grade acoustic capacitor, a new low noise/high-gain bandwidth op amp, and the use of damping material under the transformer and around the signal cables are just a few examples of Yamaha's commitment to great sound quality.

Short Signal Paths: The highly logical and symmetrical internal layout of parts and circuit boards are designed to keep the signal paths on each board as short as possible. This purposeful design also keeps the paths between sections straight and short, minimizing the chance of signal loss or interference.

Laser Pickup Floating Mechanism: The laser pickup is isolated on a floating mechanism so its delicate operation cannot be affected by vibration.

Intelligent Digital Servo System: This type of system uses a microcomputer to monitor the signal, adjusting pickup tracking and focus, as well as spindle motor speed, to compensate for any problems.

Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz DAC: The Yamaha CD-S300 CD player employs a Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz DAC ensuring excellent conversion precision, S/N ratio, and dynamic range.

Disc Compatibility

CD Compatibility: The Yamaha CD-S300 CD player will play CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs (12cm or 8cm).

CD Text: When a CD Text encoded CD is played, this unit will display the CD Text information - disc title, artist name, and track name.

MP3/WMA Playback: The CD-S300 supports playback of compressed MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (16-320 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 format. The CD player can recognize up to 256 folders, 512 filers per folder, and a maximum of 999 total files.

Controls

LCD Display: The Yamaha CD player features a front-panel LCD display that shows the current status of the unit. You can select from elapsed time of the current track, remaining time of the current track, or the remaining time of the disc. You can also temporarily display the filename of your MP3/WMA files up to 28 characters. The front-panel display offers 4 brightness settings.

Pure Direct: The CD-S300 offers Pure Direct, which is the same popular feature included in Yamaha amplifiers and receivers. By pressing the button on the front panel or on the remote control, it shuts down the digital audio output and turns off the display. This achieves the lowest possible noise interference and, therefore, the highest sound quality of the analog audio output.

Playback Modes: The CD-S300 offers the following playback modes.

  • Program: You can customize the playback order of up to 24 track store on an Audio CD. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
  • Random: You can play back tracks in random sequence from and Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
  • Repeat: You can play back a single track or all tracks repeatedly from a Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
  • Repeat A-B: You can repeat a specified section of a track on an audio CD. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
  • Ready Mode: Pauses playback after each track, allowing you to start the next rack at any desired time.
Note: This unit retains the current Repeat & Random playback mode after turning off the power.

Search Functions: The CD-S300 offers the following search functions.

  • Direct Search: You can enter the desired track number for an Audio CD using the numeric keypad (0-9) on the remote control. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
  • Skip: You can skip to the beginning of the current, next, or previous track of an audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
  • Fast Forward/Reverse: You can rapidly advance or reverse through a track on an Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device. Each time you press the search key, the search speed increases by 2 levels.

Remote Control: The Yamaha CD-S300 single disc CD player comes with a full-function IR remote control for wireless operation of the unit. The remote has a range up to 20 feet with an angle of 30-degrees to the left and right of the unit's front-panel IR eye.

Connections

Analog Audio Output: The Yamaha CD player is equipped with one set of stereo RCA jacks.

Digital Audio Output: The Yamaha CD-S300 features a optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital output.

USB Port: The USB port on the front panel allows you to play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (16-320 kbps) music files from a USB memory device (flash drive), card reader, or portable audio player that use FAT16/FAT32 format. The unit will recognize up to 256 folders, 512 files per folder, and a maximum of 32,767 total files. The unit's USB port supports basic playback controls, such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Skip (Next/Previous); as well as folder and track select.

iPod/iPhone Compatible: The Yamaha CD player's USB port also supports playback of your iPod/iPhone's music files (via the USB/dock cable supplied with  your iPod). The CD-S300 offers audio playback, basic control (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Previous/Next) and charging of your iPod. Advanced navigation is still done through your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. Artist and song information will need to be viewed on your connected iPod's LCD screen. The Yamaha CD-S300 is "made for iPod/iPhone" compliant and supports the following iPod/iPhone models and functions (as of 9/27/2012):

Is the front panel aluminum or plastic?
[ TJ  Jun 26, 2020 ]

A
Plastic
[ R  Jun 27, 2020 ]
A
I own this CD S300 and assumed the front panel was metal without inspecting it closely. The face plate is 3/16th of an inch thick and would probably be thinner if it was metal. It does appear to be plastic, but it has a nice clean look.
[ Andrew  Jun 27, 2020 ]
A
The front panel is aluminum.

[ MICHAEL  Jun 18, 2020 ]
A
In checking the Yamaha CD-S300 manual, it states "Do not connect devices other than USB mass storage class devices: USB chargers, USB hubs, PC's, HDD, etc." Therefore, the answer is no. The port is for iPods & flash drives only.
[ Mark  Jun 18, 2020 ]

Sorry I can't answer that question. I don't remember that being an option when we purchased ours. I will tell you we are very pleased with our player. Very clear, crisp sound. We are using it through a Yamaha receiver and Polk Audio speakers both purchased from Crutchfield.
[ Vickie  Jan 21, 2020 ]
A
I believe so but check with Crutchfield. It has been made in silver in the past.

Q
When I play my iPod classic through the USB port, it sounds great (better then the iPod usually does, less 'muddy' and crisper sounding), is it using the DAC from the S300, or the one in the iPod?
[ Chris  Oct 30, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
Info from Yamaha's web page for the S300 states : iPod plugged into USB port will be output through S300's DAC. So the answer to your question is yes, through the S300 DAC. Full info can be found by googling Yamaha S300 CD player. Hope this helps.

Q
I understand the CD-S300 detects and properly applies a de-emphasis via the analog outputs for older CDs created with pre-emphasis. Question - does the CD-S300 also send pre-emphasis flag info via the coaxial S/PDIF output? (I have an external DAC and would prefer to use it's de-emphasis filter.)

A
player does not like home made disc.
[ KENNETH E.  May 04, 2019 ]
A
Frankly, I don't know, since I believe in shorter signal paths, so no DAC for me with CDs. Now, on pure direct, this unit soundly beats multi k$ units built a decade ago. I am habitually rediscovering old CDs on my almost perfect small listening room with my very unforgiving Dynaudios .
[ antonio capo  Apr 24, 2019 ]
A
I don't know.
[ Franklin  Apr 24, 2019 ]
Q
What are the dimensions of this unit?
[ E  Dec 15, 2017 ]
4 answers
A
3.5" tall, 17 1/8" wide, 10" deep (case dimension)
[ Alan  Dec 19, 2017 ]
A
The official specs of the Yamaha CD-S300 list the dimensions as [17-1/8-inches w x 3-1/8-inches h x 10-1/4-inches d]. I always add a couple of inches to the depth to account for connections. And I'd note that the unit runs warm, and so it might like an extra inch of ventilation space above it in a stack or rack. I have found it to be an excellent, smooth-working, high-resolution CD player, especially when connected via toslink/optical.
[ M  Dec 16, 2017 ]
A
From the Crutchfield Site, the dimensions are: 17-1/8"W x 3-3/8"H x 11-1/2"D.
[ Mark  Dec 16, 2017 ]
A
17 1/8 w x 9 7/8 d (excluding rear jacks) x 3 3/8 tall (including feet)

Will this player work with the remote for a Yamaha R-S500?
[ mark  Oct 02, 2016 ]
3 answers
A
Don't know if it would. I imagine the remotes are pretty similar but can't say for sure that that the R- S500 remote will work the S-300. Jack
[ JACK  Oct 03, 2016 ]
A
Mark, unfortunately I have no idea as I have only tried he remote which came with the unit. Perhaps one of the Crutchfield "Ask an Expert" folks can help. Go the the Crutchfield website for contact info which this response will not permit me to list. Sorry. Don
[ Don  Oct 03, 2016 ]
A
Sorry I can't help you, but I don't know the answer to that.
[ Susan  Oct 03, 2016 ]
Q
Can I attach it to a receiver using both analog and digital outputs at the same time?
[ Richard  Jul 04, 2016 ]
3 answers
A
If you have seperate Controls on your receiver to select either the digital or the analog inputs I dont see why this should not be ok.
[ MICHAEL  Jul 05, 2016 ]
A
The manual says that the digital outputs are disabled when the mode "Pure Direct" is turned on. Pure Direct is a feature that turns off most of the panel indicators. It reduces electrical noise that can appear (at very low level) in the output signal. When using Pure Direct, the manual says use the analog outputs. I infer from this that when Pure Direct is off, both analog and digital outputs are active. A Wiki article on S/PDIF says S/PDIF is unidirectional, so the receiver could not reply to the CD player to turn the digital signal on and off. The player has both fiber optic digital output and coaxial (RCA connector) digital output, so both are unidirectional S/PDIF.
[ Philip  Jul 05, 2016 ]
A
I think your receiver will only use an analogue input. The CD Player is taking a digital signal and converting it to an analogue signal through the use of a D/A converter. That said, your CD player is sending your receiver an analogue signal. Suggest you use your CD input or Aux input to read your CD player.

Q
Will this work with the iPhone 6s Plus?
[ Anthony  Jun 23, 2016 ]
3 answers
A
I don't know whether it works or not as I have a MS Lumia 640 and have never tried to use the feature. I have had numerous problems attempting to employ my Harmony universal control through my entertainment center, but that may be due to my ineptness. Sorry I wasn't any help! Curt
[ Curtiss  Jun 27, 2016 ]
A
Yes, it works well with the iPhone. You just plug your iPhone into the CD player using a lightning/USB cord (the normal charging cord) and enable USB input on the CD player (press the CD/USB button). You can then easily play iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, etc., through your CD player.
[ Tom  Jun 27, 2016 ]
A
i never used it this way with my iPhone. I imagine it would though if there is an app. Check the App Store.
[ PETER R  Jun 27, 2016 ]
Q
Will this player decode the feed from Spotify Premium from my iPhone 5s via the USB input? Essentially bypassing the phone's internal DA's? Thanks
[ David  Aug 05, 2015 ]
2 answers
A
Yes. The feed to the CD player via USB is digital and will be decoded by the CD player. Further, if you have an outboard third-party DAC, you can feed the digital output from the iPhone through the CD-S300 to the DAC using the CD-S300's digital output.
[ Tom  Jun 27, 2016 ]
A

Will the CD S300 play the classic ipods? I have iPod Touch but since it only had 32Gb I bought the classic one with 160Gb so I can put all my music in one iPod. If it does not, I will not buy it. Thanks!

Hi-- I'm sorry, but I can not answer this question. I purchased the YAMAHA CD S300 for my 83 year old Dad- an older audio-file. He has other components including a high end turntable. He has never used the iPod ( although he has one). I can tell you that the quality of this product like all YAMAHA products is superb. I set it up with him and have used it while visiting his house. I am very impressed and he is very happy with it. I hope someone can answer your question. Perhaps YAMAHA has a customer service phone number or email.

Q
Will this unit play FLAC files from a USB flash drive? I specifically want to play "hi-res" FLACs up to 192kHz/24-bit. Will the player recognize these files (tracks) within folders (albums) that are loaded on USB flash drives?
[ Eric  Sep 16, 2014 ]
4 answers
A
The Yamaha CD-S300 is designed for MP3 and WMA version 8 and 9 files loaded onto USB flash drives. It will not play these files if they are copyright-protected. It does accept the FLAC PCM format loaded on USB flash drives, but I don't know to what resolution. I don't use the USB port myself. I generally just shove a CD into it which it plays beautifully. Sorry, I'm old school and prefer an LP or CD to downloaded copies. I still wish quadraphonic had caught on.
[ GLENN  Sep 21, 2014 ]
A
Sorry don't know as I have only played cd's through it-it does a mighty fine job of that though.
[ Eric  Sep 18, 2014 ]
A
no
[ JOSEPH A  Sep 17, 2014 ]
A
I believe no because a search of the 'net and since I owned the unit since last October, I couldn't play FLAC, but I believe Yamaha cd-s700 does. Hope this helps.

Q
does this player play split track cds?
[ kevin  Aug 17, 2014 ]
2 answers
A
This player does not play split track cds that I am aware of. It does play all other cds that I own, including hybrid cds.
[ H. KEITH  Aug 17, 2014 ]
A
Yes as long as it is in one of the formats listed in the description of the player; CD CDR CDRW from what I understand about split track cd's it will play any CD, including split track. You can also google it about this specific player to see what it says Kevin. Also, this is an excellent player that I have had since last October and I love CD's still so the single disc player usb/cd option being able to play music from a flash drive is awesome with a great design can't go wrong here Kevin. I hope I helped. Sincerely. Ken.

Hi Craig happy to answer your question. I just bought this player 1 month ago and it's awesome but I just tried usb to usb on pc and unless you use a memory stick usb with files copied from your computer usb to usb does not detect no mtter what I disabled and re-enabled pc speakers the whole deal. I have a sonh vaio laptop if that helps. If your not used to knowing ho to download and copy files to a memory stick a good one to buy is PNY 8 gb can hold up to 1500 songs! I have about 800 half used. I would recommend this CD player. Happy Holidays! Ken Allen.

no. search for a "B" USB input....USB A to B.....(the square USB)......i recommend a separate DAC. Crutchfield sells the Cambridge DAC Magic 100, i own it and it works great. Peace.
