Defective product
brian from St Paul, MN on 3/12/2023
Yamaha cd-s303 (bl): I have found this product very frustrating. I first purchased it on 12/28/2022 and within my first 2 days of listening I was hearing a noise like a scratch on an album. Every second or so (with exact intervals) a noise would appear, like an album making a circuit and hitting its scratch. This noise is intermittent, so it can play 10-20 cds with no noise, but by now I know the noise will occur again. I received a replacement for it, and this 2nd unit does the exact same thing. It is not the cd, as I can play the same cd on a portable player (and did on my previous player and car cd player) and not have the noise occur. I can also restart the track, and not have it appear. Seems an obvious defect, and I have found at least 4 other customer reviews mentioning it, with one of them also getting a replacement and having the same issue again. Frustrating that the unit gets good reviews--how are reviewers not noticing this? And Yamaha itself, they "no nothing," and take a month to finally say this.
Pros:
Cons: defect-noise, not from cd

Nice CD player
Ross from Port St Lucie, FL on 3/10/2023
Good solid CD player, added it to the Cambridge CXA81 and Polk ES60 speakers recently purchased. Compared the sound to lossless streaming and feel the CD-303 edges out the streaming service (via bluetooth). Used the same CD in my collection to the same CD played streaming. My thanks to Crutchfield Adviser Jared for his help in making this selection.

Great CD player
Allen from Portland, OR on 2/5/2023
We purchased this CD player based on the recommendation from Crutchfield and the good reviews. We were looking for a basic CD player to place in our den, with the capability to play CD-Rs. We did not need all the bells and whistles, just a decent player that will last. The Yamaha S-303 is solid, with an attractive black design, and it looks right at home with our Marantz integrated amp. CDs sound rich and full, and the remote is easy to use. The USB port is a plus.
Pros: Sounds great, looks high-end, USB port
Cons: Button text on front can be hard to read in low light

Great Mid End player
Rene from Medina, OH on 2/2/2023
I went to use my CD player that I have had since 1990's and the tray of the multi-CD player jammed and even after taking apart would not work. So I went on the quest for a new player. Unfortunately I can not afford what I really wanted. I have a great set of speakers and was pleasantly surprised by my new unit. It is a great improvement in my old one as the DAC was only 8 bit. I heard the difference right away. The highs and the lows were greatly improved and it sounded clearer. Would recommend great mid-priced unit. I have and have had a lot of Yamaha gear over the years and they have never disappointed. Also since the great independent AV store of the past are no longer around (miss being able to hear and see the product - plus the advice of knowledgeable reps) Crutchfield has done a good job of explaining the tech.

Need a versatile and practical CD player? Look no further!
Pete from Long Island, NY on 1/30/2023
A versatile and practical yet affordable CD player. Unless you really need and can appreciate a $6K McIntosh CD player, this will probably do just fine. This player can play CD-Rs and CD-RWs and has both optical and coaxial digital outputs if you own a good external DAC. The remote is more functional and intuitive to use than what most high-end players come with. If you own dedicated audio room with $30K+ audio equipment in it, then you should probably go with a fancier brand like McIntosh or Naim, but this will serve your casual music-listening needs just fine. Sure, its loading time isn't the fastest, its built-in DAC doesn't produce the warmest sound I've ever heard, and there are a few other inconveniences, but they are so minor for me (and I don't want to pay $2K to get rid of them). Probably the most practical CD player at this price range.

Awesome CD Player!
Crutchfield customer from PALMETTO, FL on 12/13/2022
I am very happy with this unit so far. Very sleek and elegant in my opinion, functionally there are no issues. I appreciate also that even when I put a fairly scratched CD in it, the skips were "read" in about the least obtrusive way possible, it pretty seamlessly skipped over it without any unsavory noises to where I had to question "did that just skip?". A little bummed it only has 1 tray but I chose to go with a Yamaha unit to keep all my AV equipment the same brand. I know a lot of folks say there is a big nostalgia factor with vinyl (and there is!) but there's also something to be said about dropping a CD in a tray and hearing the whir of it spin up, for us 90's kids anyway.
Pros: Classy, elegant design. Good build quality. Sounds fantastic.
Cons: A bit pricy for a single CD player.

Great single CD player for a home stereo system!! Sleek design and great quality. I intended to connect this to my home stereo system using the optical connection, but had trouble with that. The Right Choice
James from Winchester, KY on 11/21/2022
Over the years I have acquired around 500 vinyl albums and 1000 cds. I stream a lot of music, but want to still enjoy my collections. My years old Sony 5 disc cd player still works, but I felt a newer unit would sound better. I considered a lot of players. The Yamaha 303 seemed the best choice. It has a good internal dac, matches my Yamaha 301 Inetegrated amp, I can use the amp remote on both units, and the player was at an attractice price. The sound is the best yet. Really involving and I am pleased. The amp and cd player both have dacs. I am using RCA cables. I called Crutchfield to inquire about the 2 dac situation. To my understanding, using the RCA cables or the optional optical cable, will dictate which dac will be dominant. I was told the optical cable will be a the better connection. I will swap the RCA cables out for an optical cable. However, the RCAs seem to be working well. I seriousely considerd 4 different players. I have been listening to my cds, some of which I have had for 40 years, and am surprised and pleased with how rich and engaging the music is. The Yamaha 303 is the perfect addition.
Pros: Matches my amp. Sound quality. Sturdy build. Price.

Bought this player to play split track cds for church choir rehearsals. Cd would periodically have a at least a one second skip. I called Crutchfield. They told me to contact and ship to a repair place since Crutchfield does not deal with repairs. I made arrangements with a repair place. THEY KEPT IT FOR 5 MONTHS. said there were supply chain issues for parts. Finally got it back "repaired" and it still skipped, as if nothing was done to it. I called Crutchfield and they made things right but wanted to deduct a "restocking fee". I explained that this player does not need to go back on the shelf. It's defective. They did give a full refund. My rate is 1 star for the product but 5 stars for customer service. I can't say the same for the repair place.

Jeff from Rutledge, TN on 7/18/2022
Sounds excellent. I purposely tested it with loud bass and loud volume to see if the vibrations could get it to skip. It did not. My old Sony had to be discarded because it was skipping like crazy and I could no longer listen to any track even at low volume and bass turned off. My only complaint is the short power cord - my unit is at the top of my audio stack (maybe 4 feet high off the floor) and the chord doesn't even reach the surge protector on the floor. So I had to put an extension cord on it. This should not have been necessary.

Regarding the cd player itself, the Yamaha is a definite sonic upgrade over the 30 year-old Sony player it replaced. Overall, the soundstage seems to have greater depth and breadth than what I was hearing from the old unit, more nuance and separation--or, it's all in my head. Also, the transport in the Yamaha seems to be more stable than the old Sony unit, which was the primary reason that I replaced it. Service by Crutchfield was top-notch. The box was well packed and the Yamaha seems to have survived the long journey from VA to my home.

Ok so here's my 2cents. It's a 5 star CD player. Sound is Awesome, easy to use great remote, top notch build and feel. Did I mention it sounds fantastic? I'm giving it 1 star For one reason only. Because when I look to buy a product I read the worst reviews first to see what's what. I feel that my review will be the last 1 star This unit gets because I believe the firmware update will solve the issues that myself and others have experienced. Crutchfield would have taken this back but I told them to hold off. I went on the Yamaha website and low and behold the first thing that popped up was the firmware.my unit had v1.30 they recommended v1.37. I downloaded it per their instructions and voila. No more Popping, clicking or distortion. Just Pearl Jam, Ben Harper, Days of the New etc..Hope this helps!
Pros: Price, Support, Build Quality, Features, Sound Quality!
Cons: Took a while to figure out that the firmware was the Popping and Clicking issue also Distortion. V 1.30 installed, V 1.37 was needed. That's it!

Arrived yesterday so new to the player but very happy so far - paired with a vintage Yamaha R-300 receiver and NS 10-T speakers I've had for 36 years. The CD-S303 is solid and the sound in clean and crisp. You could easily spend $2,000 on a Yamaha CD player and probably would not improve on the sound. Ordered without staff assistance but was delighted to learn of Crutchfield's free lifetime tech support.
Pros: Super easy to set up. Superior sound. Silent running.
Cons: Wobbles ever so slightly but think it's on an uneven surface that a tiny piece of felt will cure.

After 3 months of (nearly) daily use with the Yamaha CD S303 it's a high value, very nice sounding CD player. Two features I greatly appreciate are the sound quality of the internal Burr Brown DAC and USB playback capability. The sound quality is audiophile level thanks to the quiet operation and the first rate DAC. The USB Drive: IMO Half or more of this units utility /benefits are found here. For most, including me, this requires a bit of time invested. But if you have the CD's and a computer it's worth the initial hassle IMO. With your CD's loaded onto a music player you place the songs (as playlists for simplicity) into a folder and then copy the folder to the USB drive. (I'm far from a techie and I found it doable with the help of a YouTube video). Honestly, I overlooked the USB function until recently and now I'm very glad I ventured into it. With a few USB drives set up there's a lot of flexibility available for this player and car audio with USB input. Also, those who wish this was a multi-disk player can achieve that end through the USB. Bottom Line: This Yamaha S303 player offers high quality CD sound with the bonus USB option. It's a solid addition to any good sounding stereo system. I love mine and with a Yamaha integrated amp - a keeper system indeed!
Pros: Sound Quality/ Burr Brown DAC Versatile USB Playback option Very Quiet Operation

Disappointing Purchase
Crutchfield customer from Milan , OH on 3/29/2022
I have had the Yamaha CD-S303 player for three months. During that time, I have experienced periodic occasions when the player skips or produces pops and clicks when playing CDs. I have played the same CDs later with no issues, so the problem is not with the CDs themselves. I changed the input/output cords and that seemed to help, but there are still times (such as last night) when the CD-S303 fails to provide a clear reproduction of sound from a CD. There can be a period of several days to a full week with no problems in sound reproduction. But then in the middle of a disc, there will be skips or repeated pops and clicks. This is disappointing to say the least.
Pros: Appearance Ease of use
Cons: Sound reproduction is faulty at times Difficult to place/remove CDs from tray

If you're looking for sound quality rather than playing flexibility from a CD player and at a reasonable price, this is a phenomenal unit. Gave this CD a 4 out of 5 only because I have never heard the sound on a higher end ($1000+) unit. This CD player made me realize that I have great speakers!
Pros: Great sound at a great price!
Cons: Plays only one CD at a time.

A CD player that does what it's supposed to do. Only thing that would make it better is if it had a CD carousel. But it's not a big deal. When I'm listening to a CD I normally will listen in order all the way through, as it was meant to be experienced.

Avoiding the design path festooned with bells and whistles the CD-S303 does one thing and does it well. With a comforting and straight forward approach it adds new life to my CD collection and provides the spark to allow my speakers to fill my listening space with the sounds they always promised to deliver. I am very pleased with the player and pleased with the Crutchfield service.

Not only an excellent CD player for the money but a excellent improvement in the quality of sound and audio detail that I have not thought possible. Actual paired this with a AKAI AM 2800 amp that is possibly 40 yrs. old-astonishing sound and clarity. Got the improvement bug and purchased a YAMAHA integrated amp to replace the AKAI , nothing short of satisfied with that purchase also.

So far I am very impressed with the Yamaha CD-S303. I am hearing musical instruments in greater detail like cymbals, that I never heard before. I was hearing some cutting out. I found out that the unit was not balanced. I balanced the unit and wiped off the cd. The cutting out stopped. The power light is to bright, so I had to cover it. I do have a cataract though. I am not impressed with the disk tray. It is kind of flimsy. I will get used to it. So far so good. I think it's a keeper.
Pros: Super audio quality with my 40 year old 45 watt Pioneer receiver and my 40 year old Cerwin Vega tryway speakers. Great quality of appearance.

Yamaha CD-S303
RickC from Salinas, CA on 1/28/2022
The Yamaha CD-S303 elevated the musicality of my CD collection. At normal listening levels, snare drums have a tighter impact, the clatter of tambourines has more separation, the warm nuance or raw passion of the human voice seems to be just right, and the position of instruments in the soundstage is apparent and unwavering. Janis Joplin's "jaw dropping" rendition of "Ball and Chain" grips listeners from beginning to end. War's "Summer" has toe tapping rhythm. "The Girl From The North Country" is a stunning tribute to Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. "The Lark Ascending", Vaughan Williams, showcases Anne Akiko Meyers' soft, sweet violin performance. Listening to "The Ultimate Demonstration Disc", Chesky Records, a friend asked: "Is the CD new?" - no, it just sounds better. In short, the midrange is simply superb. I bought my Yamaha Natural Sound Stereo Receiver CR-420 and Yamaha NS 670 speakers in the seventies. I use Alpha Core Goertz speaker cables and interconnects. The CD-S303 maintains Yamaha's beautiful Natural Sound sonic heritage and is a wonderful, complementary addition to my system.

Great Function - Great Value
General Broa from Wauconda, IL on 1/20/2022
I purchased this player as a replacement for a clunky old Sony RCD-500W 5-Disc Changer I've begrudgingly lived with for the past 15 years. The Sony was okay but (of course) does not stand up to the integrity (sound and otherwise) of this player. I am analog patched into a 90's generation ADCOM GF-565 Pre-amp paired with a GFS-5300 Amplifier powering a pair of Klipsh 280's. When it comes to honest reproduction of articulate nuances and subtle details, the S303 is notably more accurate. Response (to me) is flat and uncolored but remains true to the source material being played. Sound stage and dynamic range are very good although older AAD (SPARS CODE) discs sound a little dull and lifeless compared to AAD and DDD program material. Features and controls are practical and well positioned. Buttons have good tactile feel to them... just as a decent piece of equipment should (i.e. not like the clicky, sticky plastic tabs typically found in cheaper CD players). A little disappointed in the remote however - although it functions well, it has a bit of a cheap feel to it. It's too lightweight in the hand, not ergonomically great and the overall construction a bit on the flimsy side. Nevertheless, this player performs exceptionally well and of course the inherent USB port is a big plus. Sure, there are more sophisticated and better sounding CD players out there, but at this price point I don't think the YAMAHA S303 can be beat.
Pros: Cosmetics, Construction, Functions and Sound quality. Front panel USB port (+).
Cons: Mediocre Remote Control

This CD player pairs well with my 11 year old Yamaha receiver, being controllable from the same remote out of the box. It's mechanically silent, provides great sound. I've been enjoying a return to my CD collection while everyone else chases the rising cost of vinyl. I'm loving the sound quality and simplicity. My only minor gripe is that if I'm near the unit and reach to use the front controls rather than the remote, it's very hard to see which button is which. Black rectangles on black background with no backlight. The remote is great and, again, I can also use the remote from my receiver. Overall, I think this comes in at a nice price point to get a well built player with a decent quality DAC. Feels like a premium device. A backlight short of perfection.

Super mid-range player.
kurt from SARATOGA, CA on 1/15/2022
Excellent sound. Side/side comparison with my old player displayed a noticeable advantage for this unit. Product construction appears to be quite solid, and I would recommend if you are in the market for a CD player in this price range. The only issue I have had with the unit is occasionally it doesn't want to come up quickly from stand-by mode (stand-by is engaged when power is turned off via the remote, or the unit sits unused after playback for 15-20 mins). About 20% of the time, the remote power button has to be pushed multiple times (usually 2-3 times, but sometimes up to 6-7) before it wakes up. Cycling the main power via the front panel brings it right up if you're impatient. But that's a minor issue.
Pros: Sound Design/construction Price
Cons: Occasional sleepy stand-by mode

CD Revival!
David from Green Bay, WI on 1/14/2022
My first new component CD player since 1999. Bought to compliment my now 23 year old Sony 5 Disc Carousel player, but in all honesty haven't used the Sony since I got this a few weeks ago. Never stopped listening to or buying CDs in the streaming era and didn't abandon them for the "vinyl revival." I won't use terminology like "night and day" but this new player certainly has a fuller and richer sound than my old Sony. Hooked up to what I feel is a fairly substantial system I've build over the last 25 years and I feel it's outperforming what I expected. Could have spent more, and considered models costing up to twice as much, but I'm very satisfied with this Yamaha.
Pros: Full and Rich Sound Fast Loading and Responsive
Cons: Auto plays when powered on if a disc is left in. Slightly wider than my other components.

NOT Gapless
Allen from Potomac, MD on 1/12/2022
A fine player in every way except for one fatal flaw. I've had a long line of Yamaha CD players over the years (since the launch of the CD). Regrettably, this CD-S303 turned out to be the first that isn't gapless on standard commercial CDs. During long classical works, the player pauses (briefly but audibly) between tracks. IMHO, a fatal design defect. Not acceptable. No factory offered fix. It's being returned. Crutchfield has been great about it.
Pros: Works well as advertised, but ...
Cons: Playback is NOT gapless.

This is the 3rd Yamaha CD player I've owned. The first two, which are still in service after 3-5 years, have been very reliable and glitch-free (unlike other branded CD players I have owned) and they produce excellent sound, as does the new CD-S303, which comes with minor upgrades compared to the CD-S300, including a re-designed remote control that offers on-off switching on the remote. The CD-S300s use a Burr-Brown DAC. I'm not certain whether the same DAC is carried over to the new model, but the internal DACs in these players are by no means inferior to the DACs in the Vincent and Emotiva amps and preamps driven coaxially from these players used just as transports. Yamaha customer support has always been excellent for me. I can highly recommend these CD players.

Tyngsboro
Ian from Tyngsboro on 1/9/2022
My audio journey started when I picked up a 1995 Panasonic CD player for $5 from a thrift store, and was blown away by how good it sounded (except for the spindle noise). After failing to find a used player that wasn't either broken or hobbled in some way, I did the research and decided to take the plunge and bought the most expensive piece of audio kit I own so far. First impressions was build quality is faultless, brushed metal faceplate, soft paint on the body, detachable power cord, gold plated connectors, satisfying clicky buttons. Of course the sound quality blows me away, but as I'm experimenting with the USB port, I realize that sounds good too, too good. Indistiguishable from a CD and better than the same files playing in iTunes. I compare with my computer side by side on my receiver, and discover even compressed audio sounds much worse coming out my computer's built in audio jack. So I have also purchased a Scarlett Solo for $110, after comparing now the sound quality of the FLAC and WAV files playing directly from the computer is 95% as good as this CD player. Same details and range as far as my ears will go, but the Yamaha spaces the sounds out very slightly more, but not 4X the price more. I set out to listen to better music through CD's, and I arrived at the conclusion I actually needed a DAC for my PC, as even the compressed audio benefits from it. I've considered returning it, but it looks so good and is so pleasant to use, I think I'll keep it.
Pros: Typing in the track number like a channel is very conveniant to have. Remote is very sexy and shiny and slender. Very hefty, faceplate real brushed metal, soft but rough rubbery paint like a Thinkpad, gold connectors, detachable power cord. It is the best sound quality I have so far personally experienced, but it just barely edges out a Solo, if you are on a budget I would get the no name Amazon DACs that Reddit recommends and just play the CD through a computer which are plentiful and cheap.
Cons: Expensive, these aren't cheap Walmart items anymore. It has both a physical power switch and a power button on the remote which conflict with each other, but that's better than no power button at all like CD-S300. Fast forward is slow, buttons on remote are teeny tiny and hard to read, and is top heavy and tips over. Premium materials are a fingerprint magnet. Made in China. It's not more convenient than iTunes.

Better than vinyl
Crutchfield customer from South Portland, ME on 1/1/2022
It is nice to hear my CDs again!! I was using a cheap blu-ray/CD player combo previously and wasn't hearing all of the frequencies that I am on this player. I'm not of the school that vinyl is better than digital. About my only complaint is now I can't turn up my receiver volume past 5 or my condo neighbors are going to hear it. I'm still working though on loading music to a flash drive for this feature. The player won't read the EXFat format on my new 256mb drive. I may need some tech support on how or if I can do this reformat.. so I'm using an old 4mb flash that was already set up this way which isn't going to hold many FLAC file. This filing snafu aside, I'm pleased with my investment and the value with this machine.

I bought this to replace a 30 year old (but great sounding!) Sony 5 disc changer I'd found recently in a thrift shop after getting back into CD's as a format. As you'd expect, a three decade old multichanger mechanism was not 100% reliable. And it really had no idea what to do with CD-R's, which is a bigger problem than you might think--a lot of indie bands use burnt CD's over the higher budget pressed variety, so a fair amount of my collection wouldn't play. This Yamaha is pretty much exactly what I was looking for--very solidly built, great sound quality, plays CD-R's. The USB playback is handy. Highly recommended. Absolutely no complaints. As always, Crutchfield's service in this was fantastic. Need a CD player? Hit the link.

Just What I Wanted When I Needed It!
Crutchfield customer from Pueblo, CO on 12/26/2021
My old CD changer suddenly stopped reading discs -- right in the middle of one!. I needed a new player RIGHT NOW! Of course, now that CD technology is "old school" and no longer sexy, there's not a whole lot of choice in equipment. Add to that that orders are backed up due to supply-chain problems at many stages of manufacturing and distribution, then the situation becomes even more dire. Crutchfield had this unit in stock. Big plus! But I'm familiar with Yamaha and their general excellence , so I was more than happy to give this unit a try. And I am glad I did. It performs beautifully. I have over 1K CDs, more than half of them classical and/or pipe organ, so I need a good player. The Yamaha CD-S303 more than exceeds my demands. It is easy to set up and use; the controls are fairly intuitive. The signal to the rest of my home theatre (including studio/theatre speakers) is clear, concise, and a joy to hear. Thanks to Crutchfield and especially to my adviser Goose, who helped me immensely. I'll definitely look to him for any future home theatre needs. The transaction was smooth, immediate, and in 48 hours I was using my new Yamaha CD player. I couldn't be happier than I am with this unit (and with Crutchfield). Bravo Yamaha for another audio triumph.

Nice sound on a budget.
Ted from Corvallis, OR on 12/23/2021
I bought the Yamaha to replace my 90s DENON DCD-590 which now skips on some songs. The Yamaha is more robust and avoids skipping. The Yamaha's sound quality is just as good or better than the DCD-590 with my Martin Logan Electromotion 8" ceiling speakers (crystal clear treble) and my Polk Audio RTA 11 Tower speakers; both are driven by my DENON 60 watt per channel receiver. The Marantz CD player looks to be a step up; but I did not want to pay $800. The Yamaha is totally adequate. Also, Crutchfield's price was the same as another retailer but I was pleasantly surprised that the CD player was shipped two-day air and arrived two days before Christmas! Great music room addition
Crutchfield customer from Eau Claire, WI on 12/5/2021
I own and use a half dozen Yamaha home entertainment products, including video player, CD changer, and Receiver in a "TV room" with studio monitors for playback. This latest single disc player replaces a failed front-button-populated player in a larger "music room", adding to a signal path of Yamaha "Natural Sound" control amp (preamp/switcher), AM/FM tuner, this new disc player, various aux ins for nearby audio sources ( Sirius/XM receiver, mixer, tape, digital drums). From the preamp the signal is further conditioned by a BBE "Sonic Maximizer" then to a convection cooled Crown D-150A power amp and Altec Lansing "Santiago" speakers (15/Horn voice of the theater with added HF tweeters). With the new remote I can pick off tracks or individual sections to study, practice, construct charts, jam along with, at any volume from conversation and unplugged electric guitars to loud live band. The sampling and response characteristics of this unit are great for this application, and hopefully it will be as dependable as the other Yamaha components. The only curious but manageable idiosyncrasy is that when I switch the system on with a master rack power strip with the unit's power switch in on/standby position, the deck automatically goes to on/play and lights the display, starts the disc if there's one inserted...? Without that input selected it just "ghosts" at the controller.

Excellent unit for the price
Crutchfield customer from Springfield, IL on 12/5/2021
I love this player, it has everything you need, at a price that is affordable considering the quality. I will be honest it is the most expensive CD player I ever purchased, but I don't feel like I got ripped off. I'm not an audiophile, but there was a noticeable sound improvement when switching to this unit from a much cheaper one. Paired with my Jamo S807's, and Yamaha R-S202 receiver, the whole system sounds awsome for under $800. My only complaint, is the button layout on Yamaha Stereo equipment remotes are a little unintuitive (They are small and in an illogical order). Given the price and performance however this issue is negligible. I am very happy with this unit. It plays well with other Yamaha equipment as well.
