Being my first experience with separate components, I like this preamp better than my previous Yamaha 3070 integrated AV amp. This preamp does a much better job of processing the audio and video. If you want to experience the potential video quality of this preamp, I suggest acquiring an upper end HDMI video cable.
Pros: Great value for the money.
Cons: Not as versatile as higher cost preamps.

I had been using the preamp section of a Denon AVR, and decided to try a true preamp. Since I had used nothing but D-M units for quite a few years, I decided to try this Yamaha device. I am very glad that I did, because this preamp has extraordinary performance, the best that I have ever heard. Sound is clear, distinct and detailed and the surround sound effects are outstanding. If you are considering a preamp, it doesn't get any better than this. One warning: it helps to have experience in setting up AV devices to get this thing into operation. The online manual isn't very good, and it leaves out things that you will have to figure out on your own. But, the effort is worth it.
Pros: Extraordinary sound, excellent video processing, outstanding build quality, a full range of surround sound programs

The best unit and name out there! After returning 2 Marantz receivers( pre-amp section defective) I am happy as I can be!
Pros: Reliable, beautiful, never over hit, does what it made for

Great out of the box! Love the look and sound of this unit. Had 2 denons and a merantz and they didn't come close

I wanted to get a Yamaha integrated receiver but none was available, and they would not handle all channels. This was a little pricey with the amp but is well worth the cost. Everything is easy to use and works great. If you are watching some sci fi flics and you have creatures running around in the background, you might jump off your seat and look for them.
Cons: It is a heavy device. Make sure you have shelf support for this and an amp.

I auditioned two AV units, the CX 2080 Yamaha receiver and the CX 5200 Yamaha pre amp processor. The CX 5200 won the audition with its warm sound. It also controlled the bass with a tighter and more clean representation. The setup was fairly easy. The Yamaha control app was a great help in changing inputs. Changing inputs on the remote is rather clunky. You have to slide between inputs by using the right and left arrows on the remote. The process is slow and clunky. So I use the app for changing inputs because it is quicker and more precise. The control app is limited in its function. I wish the control app could do everything the remote can do like turning the volume up or down. Construction wise this unit is built like a tank. 5 stars for sound 1 star for selecting inputs with remote. I like the remote's lighting and the way the buttons are covered with a rubber coating making it virtually water proof.
Pros: Construction sound quality controlled bass easy setup & variety of setting and options for adjustments
Cons: Changing inputs is slow. Control app needs to have more functions added, like volume control.
