About the Yamaha HTR-5590
From high-impact home theater, to subtle musical detail with this versatile receiver driving your A/V system, you've got it all! Yamaha's HTR-5590 is a surround sound powerhouse, combining 100 watts x 6 channels of full-bandwidth-rated power with a host of 5.1- and 6.1-channel decoding options. Dolby® Digital EX and DTS-ES deliver 5.1- or 6.1-channel sound from DVD movie soundtracks. Dolby Pro Logic II decoding and DTS Neo:6 modes give you convincing 5.1- and 6.1-channel sound, respectively, from just about any stereo or Dolby Surround source: movies on VHS, TV broadcasts, and even your favorite music!
Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design ensures maximum signal quality through every step in the audio path, for stellar sonic results. The incredible HTR-5590 employs 9 separate 192kHz/24-bit DACs one for each of the 7 channels in a 6.1 signal, plus 2 extras devoted to the front soundstage for precise separation of dialogue, music, and effects. An advanced 32-bit processor handles all home theater surround decoding, plus Yamaha's exclusive Quad-Field Cinema DSP soundfields.
You get plenty of connectivity for all your sources, including component video switching, 7 digital inputs, and 6 A/V inputs with S-video. A 5.1-channel input lets you hook up a DVD-Audio or SACD player, and the HTR-5590's wide-range frequency response means you can take full advantage of those hi-res music formats. Front-panel optical digital and S-video inputs provide easy hookup of video games, camcorders, and portable audio gear. The HTR-5590 even offers dual-room/dual-source output: you can enjoy multichannel home theater in your main listening room, while a friend or housemate listens to a different stereo audio source in another room (requires separate amp, shelf system, or powered speakers in 2nd room).
The HTR-5590's powerful LCD remote is pre-programmed to control other brands of A/V gear, and can also "learn" specific commands from your other remotes. Yamaha's Silent Cinema mode is a nice touch it lets you experience multichannel surround effects using regular stereo headphones!

Virtual Cinema DSP: With Virtual Cinema DSP, you can enjoy all the DSP programs without rear speakers. This feature creates virtual rear speakers to reproduce the natural sound field.
Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema lets you enjoy the sound fields while using headphones.
Sound Field Parameter Adjustment: You can adjust the values of certain digital sound field parameters so the sound fields are recreated accurately in your listening room. Depending on the sound field, you can adjust some or all of the following parameters: DSP Level, Initial Delay, Room Size, Liveness, Surround Delay, Surround Initial Delay, Surround Room Size, Surround Liveness, Rear Center Initial Delay, Rear Center Room Size, Rear Center Liveness, Reverberation Time, Reverberation Delay or Reverberation Level.
Zone 2 Audio Output: This unit is equipped with stereo RCA jacks to send a stereo audio signal to a receiver or amplifier in another room. The same source or different sources may be played in the main room and the 2nd room. Only signals from components connected to the analog input jacks are passed through the Zone 2 audio output jacks.
On-screen Display Modes: You can change the amount of information the on-screen display shows by selecting one of the following modes:
- Full Display: always shows the DSP program parameter settings on the video monitor
- Short Display: briefly shows the same contents as the front panel display at the bottom of the screen and then disappears
- Display Off: briefly shows the "Display Off" message at the bottom of the screen and then disappears
Background Video (BGV) Function: The BGV function allows you to combine a video image from a video source with the audio from an audio source.
Center Graphic EQ: You can adjust the 5-band graphic EQ so the center speaker tonal quality matches that of the left and right main speakers. You can adjust the following frequencies from -6dB to +6dB: 100Hz, 300Hz, 1kHz, 3kHz, and 10kHz.
Headphone Tone Control: The bass and treble level for the headphone output can be adjusted from -6dB to +3dB.

Automatic Preset Tuning: This feature will put up to 40 FM stations into preset memory automatically.
Preset Groups: Preset stations are stored in groups (A, B, C, D, E) of 8 stations each, making it easier to organize your presets. There is an edit key, which allows you to exchange the places of any 2 preset stations with each other.
Sleep Timer: This unit is equipped with a sleep timer that will automatically turn the unit off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
Memory Back-up: This unit will retain the tuner presets and menu settings for up to 1 week without being connected to power.
Memory Guard: This feature prevents accidental changes to the DSP program parameter settings, set menu settings, level settings and on-screen display mode setting. The Memory Guard feature may be turned on or off.
Multibrand/Learning A/V Remote: The supplied remote is pre-coded to control most brands of DVD players, VCRs, TVs, cable boxes, satellite receivers, LD players, CD players, CD recorders, MD recorders, tape decks and tuners. In addition, this remote can learn up to 120 infrared commands from remotes of other components. An illuminated LCD shows the current source component that you are controlling. Glow-in-the-dark buttons make the remote easy to operate in the dark.
On-screen Display: The on-screen display is not passed through the component video monitor output, only the S-video and composite video monitor outputs.
Phones: This receiver has a standard headphone output on the front panel under the front panel door.
Speaker Outputs: There are binding post connectors for the left front A, right front A, left front B, right front B, center, left rear, right rear, and rear center speakers. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs.
Remote In/Out: The remote in/out jacks allow you to connect an infrared signal receiver and infrared emitter to this unit, allowing you to control it from the second room using the supplied remote.
Control Out: This 12V trigger output allows you to send a 12V turn-on signal to a compatible component in your system.
D/A Converters: The manual incorrectly states that this receiver has a single 96kHz/24-bit DAC. Per Yamaha, the HTR-5590 employs 9 separate 192kHz/24-bit DACs.
