About the Yamaha YAS-207

Take TV sound to new heights

Talk about an upgrade to your TV's tiny built-in speakers. The Yamaha YAS-207 is the first sound bar that's ready for DTS Virtual:X — a new technology that simulates three-dimensional surround sound for your movies, shows, and sports. In other words? This bar and sub combo will make it sound like you have speakers around you, and even above you.

Take TV sound to new heights

Yamaha YAS-207 with DTS Virtual:X

Cutting-edge DTS Virtual:X processing (available with firmware update) simulates speakers all around you — even overhead.

This processing just recently became available (via a firmware update from Yamaha), but we got an in-house preview from DTS. I tested out Virtual:X on an episode of Game of Thrones and was blown away by the massive, detailed sound field. And while it works best with shows and movies mixed for DTS:X® or Dolby Atmos®, the cool thing is that it will enhance any other content, too.

Fits neatly into your TV setup

Even with the DTS Virtual:X processing turned off, the YAS-207 adds excitement to your TV watching. And it doesn't take up a lot of space. The bar can be wall-mounted or placed below your TV on a stand or table. Six built-in drivers dish out wide-open sound, while the Clear Voice feature ensures dialogue is easy to understand.

How does DTS Virtual:X work?

Many sound bars simulate Dolby Atmos or DTS:X by bouncing sound off your walls and ceiling. That's not what's happening here. The drivers inside the YAS-207 sound bar are slightly angled, but they're placed more or less where you'd expect to find them in two-channel bar. There are no upward-firing drivers. Instead, DTS Virtual:X almost completely relies on digital sound processing.

DTS uses what they call "spatial audio techniques" to — my word here — "trick" you into thinking you're hearing sound all around you. Incredibly sophisticated audio delays and adjustments create a larger, wider soundstage. That includes overhead atmospheric effects like leaves rustling on a tall tree or birds chirping above.

Wireless sub for potent bass

Sound bar in TV setup

Low-profile design for a clean TV setup (Sub must be connected to an AC outlet).

The YAS-207's subwoofer communicates wirelessly with the bar to give you more placement options. It's also pretty slim, so you might be able to stick it right next to your TV setup. (You'll need to connect it to an AC outlet.) This powerful sub brings the low-end thunder to round out the home theater experience.

Simple to hook up...

Even though the Yamaha YAS-207 includes such advanced sound processing, it's still straightforward to set up. You can connect the bar directly to your TV with the included digital optical cable. Or you can use the YAS-207's HDMI input and output — both are compatible with 4K TVs and video sources with high dynamic range (HDR).

...and simple to use

You can control the sound bar with the included remote or Yamaha's free smartphone app for Apple® or Android™. There are five listening modes — Music, TV Program, Movie, Sports, and Game — to help tailor the sound to what you're watching. And built-in Bluetooth® lets you play music wirelessly from your phone through the sound bar's powerful drivers.

    Product Research

2ch Active Soundbar Speaker: Yamaha's YAS-207 active soundbar speaker features a 2ch driver configuration with one 1" dome tweeter and two 1.75" mid-woofers for each of the left & right channels. The YAS-207's soundbar utilizes a 50 watt x 2 channel amp to power the enclosed drivers.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The Yamaha YAS-207 includes a wireless powered subwoofer that features a side-firing 6.25" woofer and 100 watt amplifier for dynamic bass response. A front-firing port aids in deeper, bigger bass response. Since the powered sub is wireless, you don't have to connect a cable between the soundbar and the sub (you still will need to plug the sub's AC power cord into a wall). The powered sub's wireless range is 33'.

Clear Voice: Clear Voice raises the level of dialog and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies and TV shows, sports commentary and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.

Bass Extension: Yamaha's exclusive Bass Extension technology boosts the bass from the wireless powered sub to produce a bigger, fuller sound. You an also adjust the wireless powered subwoofer's volume level independently from the system's overall volume.

Compressed Music Enhancer: The Compressed Music Enhancer restores frequency response lost during digital compression, so your music sounds the way it should. Optimized for Bluetooth audio transmission, you'll enjoy vivid, lively sound quality during wireless playback. When a compressed source is played, the Compressed Music Enhancer engages automatically.

Dolby Digital & DTS Compatible: The Yamaha YAS-207 soundbar decodes 2ch PCM, multi-channel PCM, Dolby Digital, & DTS audio signals. You can listen to these audio formats in Virtual Surround mode or 2ch Stereo mode. The 2ch Stereo mode is ideal for music, while the Virtual Surround mode provides a much more immersive soundfield for movies. From Yamaha's Home Theater Control App on your Apple iOS or Android device you select between different surround modes - TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports, & Game.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format
    HDMI 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit
    Multichannel Linear PCM 6ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit
    Bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS
    Optical 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-48Hz, 16/20/24-bit
    Bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS

DTS Virtual:X Ready + 3D Surround Mode (via firmware update - available now): DTS Virtual:X compatibility & a 3D Surround playback mode will be available through a firmware update (due August 2017). Once the firmware update is complete, surround sound can be heard not only from horizontal directions, but also from varying heights when DTS Virtual:X is used. DTS Virtual:X can be used with any content (from 2ch to 5.1ch soundtracks), while delivering virtual height & virtual surround processing based on psychoacoustics (not reflective surfaces).

Note: The firmware update can be accessed from Yamaha's website (click here) and downloaded onto a USB thumbdrive which will need to be inserted into YAS-207's USB port for update.

HDMI 2.0a: The Yamaha YAS-207 is outfitted with one HDMI 2.0a input and one HDMI ARC 2.0a output that support the latest HDMI 2.0a standards; such as 4K/60Hz, HDCP 2.2, 4:4:4 color subsampling, & HDR (High Dynamic Range) for full support of today's 4K content from Ultra HD Blu-ray & online video services (like Amazon & Netflix).

    • 4K/60Hz: The YAS-207 supports up to 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video @ 60 frames per second through its HDMI input and output. It also supports a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signal.
    • HDCP 2.2: The HDMI input and output also support HDCP 2.2, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission.
    • HDR 10 (High Dynamic Range): The YAS-207 supports HDR 10. High Dynamic Range video provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: In addition, the HDMI input and output support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.
    • Deep Color & x.v.Color: The soundbar's HDMI jacks support Deep Color & x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • 3D Ready: The YAS-207 soundbar supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the YAS-207's HDMI output allows audio to be sent from your compatible TV to the soundbar through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your TV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Note: Because with many televisions, the ARC-enabled HDMI input will only pass 2ch PCM from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog, we recommend that you connect your Blu-ray player or Satellite/Cable box to the Yamaha soundbar directly; and then connect the YAS-207's ARC-enabled HDMI output to your TV's ARC-enabled HDMI input. This setup will give you the best overall sound performance.

Analog & Digital Audio Inputs: The YAS-207 is outfitted with both analog & digital audio inputs to connect to your TV. There is one optical (toslink) digital input that supports 2Ch PCM, 5.1ch Dolby Digital, and 5.1ch DTS audio signals (up to 24-bit/32-48kHz). There is also one stereo minijack (3.5mm) audio input for televisions without an optical digital out.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of many flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Bluetooth Music Streaming: The Yamaha YAS-207 soundbar speaker system supports Bluetooth (v.4.1+EDR) A2DP wireless audio streaming (up to 33'). This allows you to stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device; such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/table, Windows Phone/PC, or Mac computer/laptop to the YAS-207 soundbar speaker. You will continue to navigate your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device.

    • Pairing: This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. If a Bluetooth device has been paired before, the unit will connect to the last paired device when the soundbar's Bluetooth source button is pressed. You will need to terminate this connection to pair a new device.
    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the Yamaha soundbar speaker offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the YAS-207 soundbar offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Bluetooth Standby: The Bluetooth Standby function allows you to turn On or Off the soundbar automatically, linked with the operation of a Bluetooth device.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha YAS-207.

Remote Control: The YAS-207 comes with a sleek, easy-to-use IR remote control for wireless operation of the soundbar speaker. Also, if your TV supports HDMI CEC and you use HDMI connectivity, it is possible to adjust the volume of the sound bar using your TV's remote to simplify day-to-day operation.

Note: This soundbar does not allow you to program your TV remote to operate the speaker, but does offer HDMI control through your compatible TV's remote.

Home Theater Controller App (for iOS & Android): The YAS-207 is compatible with Yamaha's Home Theater Control App (HT Controller) for Apple iOS 8.0+ & Android OS 4.0+ devices. This remote app makes it easy to control the soundbar from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device via a Bluetooth connection. Its intuitive and easy-to-see operating screen uses icons that let you easily perform a variety of operations; including Input, Volume, Audio settings, and Surround modes. Surround modes include TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports, & Game.

Mounting Options: Due to its slim profile, the soundbar fits in front of most flat-panel TVs without blocking the screen. If you prefer to wall-mount the speaker, the YAS-207 offers built-in keyhole slots (spaced 18" apart). Position the wireless powered subwoofer to the left or right of the center of the soundbar (wireless signal transmits up to 33'), and angle it slightly toward the center of the room to prevent sound from reflecting off walls.

Power Requirements: The active soundbar & wireless powered sub each come with a detachable 6' AC power cord which will need to be plugged into an AC outlet, surge protector, or power conditioner.

Auto Standby: The soundbar will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours, or no audio input and no operation for 20 minutes.

You don't really specify over what type of connection, but I can say the Bluetooth works great. I use it from my iPad and Mb pro and the sound is really good! And obviously the HDMI is flawless too.

Not sure what MusicCast is, but don't think this has it. It does provide great sound though, and rarely have to turn the subwoofer up. "clear voice" is a nice feature.

Hi, without some kind of power inverter, I believe this speaker system only runs off 110v.
    [ Robert  Dec 27, 2018 ]
I can't say with certainty, but probably not. My son has the YAS-207 at college so I'm not able to check the electrical label. However, I have the YAS-203 here in front of me and it's only for 120V, 60Hz.

Can anyone answer this: Is the Surround Sound effective? I heard the Bose soundbar and it borders on ventriloquism 3D tricks that are fantastic, but I'm not crazy about Bose sound. I am huge Yamaha & JBL fan. So, this unit caught my eye. Is the Yamaha bar effective at throwing sound effects around the room like the Bose does? Thanks!

I had this bar setup in a bedroom with standard height ceilings, no carpet so good reverberation setup.. I was obsessed trying to get the feature youre speaking of. The best I was able to achieve was mild at best it was definitely loud treble wise, I personally found the bass on the weaker side . I occasionally heard it around me but I was rarely tricked into believing the way the Bose does it. I tried different YouTube video demonstrations for positional audio, moved the sound bar and room around updated firmware to make sure I was getting all the right colors for DTS X or Dolby surround. In the end my sound bar some how became weak sounding ....turning it all the way up sounded about the same loudness as my TV. There is an off chance that the design of my room with furniture affected performance or mine was somehow defective. Ultimately I ended up buying an LG SJ9 bar and getting surround speakers. To me the watts of the new bar made a tremendous difference and the bass is movie theatreesque. My brother got a jbl 3.1 (actual name of the bar) bar the surround effect isn't amazing but it terms of raw power from a sound bar it is great.
    [ Derek  Sep 28, 2018 ]
The room I have it set up in is very open, with high ceilings, so it doesn't seem to be very effective as a surround unit. The sound quality is good, though. I think it would be great in a smaller or enclosed room.
    [ Tyler  Sep 27, 2018 ]
It depends on what you mean. The bass is great and you can't tell where it is comming from - it works as "surround". The center channel is clear, but does not surround you as a 7 channel system would.
    [ Randy  Sep 27, 2018 ]
I think if you want a clean sounding sound bar this is it. It does do a good job of giving you a surround sound effect right in front of you. I feel like the acoustics of any given room will either heighten it or lessen the effects. The sound bar sounds great. I will caution you that I myself am on my third unit. First I had a popping sub. Then it continued on the second unit. The third unit just stopped working. I wonder if Yamaha has ironed it all out. I did buy it just as it was released. But the sound of the system is fantastic. I would also say a try to keep the sub close. Some furniture has affected the connection for me.

Any problems with subwoofer cutout, resolutions?
    [ James  Aug 11, 2018 ]
    6 answers
Yep, mine didn't last a year. I moved it closer to the bar reconnect and try and reconnect and try.i ended up storing it because it just doesn't work right. I bought an lg sj9 for replacmeent.
    [ Derek  Aug 11, 2018 ]
I have on and off again subwoofer popping and I'm three models in. I did by a power conditioner to see if it would remedy the problem and it seems to have cut it down to almost a pop every couple weeks. As for cutting out I don't seem to have any issues as long as the sub is next to the unit. So that is a knock against the wirelsss feature of the unit. When working perfect there isn't a better sound bar for the buck. Don't be afraid to contact them if you think it's a warranty issue. They were very fast with that process. I appreciated it.
    [ Adam  Aug 11, 2018 ]
What do you mean by "cutout"? My setup works great by the way, and listening to music on it really brings out the quality of the sound.
    [ Steve  Aug 11, 2018 ]
    No issues
    [ Richard  Aug 11, 2018 ]
I have not had any issues with the subwoofer cutting out. The Bluetooth connection has been consistent, with the sub about 6 feet from the sound bar in the same room.
    [ Tom  Aug 11, 2018 ]
    No problems.

Mine goes off with tv but I turn on each time. Have not put forth any effort to see if I could get to come on as well.
    [ Michael  Jan 03, 2018 ]
No it does not. It has to be powered off separately. If you're looking at this for 3d sound because of dts x it is not a great performer. Reason: upward firing speakers like Dolby atmos systems are non existent. This was done in a 12x12 room with standard 8 ft. Ceilings. The encompassing 3d sound makes it seem louder and once in a great while with right content it can trick the ears but this is an extremely rare occurrence.

Yes it does with the arc hdmi port.
    [ Andrew  Jan 02, 2018 ]
Anyone else have issues of video coming thru hdmi arc but no audio? Sometimes I have to completely turn off the tv, or go thru the audio inputs to get it back.

use the optic cable that will give you sound
    [ jesse  Dec 01, 2017 ]
I always had the same problem I tried everything and still no audio, I do not use the sound bar because of this.
    [ jesse  Dec 01, 2017 ]
I have never experienced this problem.
    [ Elizabeth  Dec 01, 2017 ]
I have the opposite issue sometimes. I use an XBOX One S and it did the same thing with my Samsung sound bar. I think the handshake with the Xbox isn't the best.

Is it possible to expand the set-up bay adding wireless Bluetooth speakers?

I am not aware of any method for connecting additional speaker to this soundbar. The bass module is a Bluetooth appliaance, of course, but other speaker connections are hardwired and internal.
    [ LowerColumbia  Nov 30, 2017 ]
This sound bar doesn't have this ability on its own. If your source (assume HD TV) supports Bluetooth, you're on your way. I'm using this bar in a fairly large family room and the sound is fabulous - especially in its surround mode.

Does the unit have a lot of lights on it when it is powered off? I want to install it in a bedroom but dislike lots of LED lights shining in my eyes.

When it's off, there are no lights. Even when it's on, there are no lights on. The lights only come on when you are changing settings. Then they turn off after a few seconds.
    [ Tom  Dec 03, 2017 ]
Front is dark when off. Might have one red on in back when not in use.
    [ Michael  Nov 28, 2017 ]
The unit has No lights on when switched off
    [ Gary  Nov 28, 2017 ]
    [ Victor  Nov 28, 2017 ]
No, the soundbar does not have any lights on when it is turned off. When it is turned on you can turn its LED lights off for that matter.
    [ Wyatt  Nov 28, 2017 ]
No lights when powered off and you can toggle the lights off while powered on. Less of a distraction when using it at night.
    [ James  Nov 28, 2017 ]
No lights when turned off. You can also set the dimmer when unit is turned on.
    [ Tyler  Nov 28, 2017 ]
I believe it just one standby led light that's on but the lights are so small and don't think it'll cause your room to illuminate much.
    [ Iyu  Nov 28, 2017 ]
    No, lights go off

Where do you get the brackets for this product to hang?
    [ Steven  Sep 05, 2017 ]

No brackets needed. Mounting hangers Pre installed. Just Wall Anchors an ur ready for One Outstanding Sound Bar!
    [ VELLURE  Sep 13, 2017 ]
they should be in the box also you can use wall anchors that have screws then fit the sound bar on the screws
    [ philip  Sep 06, 2017 ]
The sound bar mounts with 2 non-included commercially available screws into drywall. The instruction manual provides a general recommendation for dimension ranges of screws that would work. A printed-out drill template is also included in the packaging so you can simply tape it up against the wall, and drill the two holes.

The Yamaha 207 has built in keyhole slots on the back so you can mount it on the wall with two screws Enter

I've got super high ceilings, and it still fills the room really well.
    [ Adam  Aug 28, 2017 ]
I installed this in two rooms which have high ceilings. For the price, I'm bery impressed. One of my locations is an outside cover porch with about 15' high ceiling. It's a large porch and the sound brings full deep rich experience. The set up was a breeze with wireless woofer. I also have ysp-5600 which brings more virtual speakers; however, the 207 is a better value and delivers. Try it! I had to send back one unused unit and Critchfield is a pleasure to works with...

Had mine in a large room did not work well
    [ Gary  Aug 28, 2017 ]
Yes, and it performs well. We have ours in a room with a 24 foot ceiling, and we are very happy with the sound quality.
    [ Tom  Aug 28, 2017 ]
I have vaulted ceilings, system sounds great. Maybe not super loud, but I have small children and a dog, don't need an ear-bleeder system. Sound quality is excellent, though. Especially with the added voice clarification.
    [ Tyler  Aug 28, 2017 ]
It states that in order to perform the required firmware update you must download then upload it onto a USB drive, and insert it into the sound bar. Our household only has wireless devices. Does anyone know if it is possible to connect an iPad or iPhone via the lights bolt connection(which has a USB end) into the sound bar to upload the firmware?
    [ Matt  Aug 23, 2017 ]

This will not work. The upgrade must be done via a USB drive. See Yamaha's website for specific upgrade instructions.
    [ AJ S.  Aug 27, 2017 ]
I doubt it. You can download the firmware from a friends computer onto a USB drive. The firmware makes a huge difference in sound quality so it's definitely worth the trouble.
    [ Christopher  Aug 24, 2017 ]
I have the same dilemma here, and have not found a way around it. Our phones and tablets seem to struggle with decompressing the file and the trick of downloading onto a USB chip. (Or the struggle is my own lack of savvy with the process!) I think I'm going to end up at a computer shop asking someone to do the deed on a Mac or PC so I can take the Zip drive home and plug it in. I am interested in hearing what all the hubbub is about.
    [ LowerColumbia  Aug 24, 2017 ]
It is NOT possible to do a firmware update like that. My advice would be to go to someone's house, download on a NEW USB, (this is a must) and then perform the update. Let me know if you have more questions.
    [ Jonathan  Aug 24, 2017 ]

Can't seem to get the sound bar to connect with my tv through the hdmi arc. It recognizes my TV (TCL 55P605) but I can't get any audio to come out of the soundbar. The TV audio continues to just come out of the TV itself, any recommendations?

The only thing I can think of is to make sure the HDMI control on the tv hardware menu is set to digital out and the tv's internal speakers of disabled.
    [ Kerry  Aug 10, 2017 ]
I had to change the input settings on my tv to the hdmi port that the sound bar was connected to. Then use the hdmi button on the sound bar remote to complete the process. You may have to use the menu screen on your tv and select sound then select a speaker other than your tv. It took me a whil
    [ IVAN  Aug 10, 2017 ]
Have you try the HDMI input on the sound bar? Also, I have to change the Audio output under my TV setting in order to get the sound come out to the sounds bar on all devices.
    [ Gary  Aug 09, 2017 ]
Mark, I had the same issue with connecting through the digital optical port. I had to go into settings for the TV itself under sound out. Its an LG TV and the options are to go through the TV speaker, HDMI, optical or wireless.
    [ Robert  Aug 09, 2017 ]
Make sure you press the HDMI button on the remote.

Is this product volume can be controlled by the TV remote like Yamaha Yas 203 ?

Hi, is possible, but this is my first time with a Yamaha product.
    [ Wilfredo  Jul 27, 2017 ]
Yes. If your TV supports HDMI CEC and connect the Yamaha to your TV with an HDMI cable, it is possible to adjust the volume of the sound bar using your TV's remote. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the speaker's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps. My Bio:
