    Receiver Features

Cinema DSP Digital: Yamaha's proprietary Cinema DSP (Digital Soundfield Processing) Digital technology goes beyond Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, which uses relatively simple matrix and steering techniques to create surround sound effects. Cinema DSP Digital draws on a huge memory of real-world data from actual venues, especially for the music programs, and input from movie sound technicians to deliver a more realistic surround experience.

Digital Top-Art: Digital Top-Art (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) is the name Yamaha has given to a design philosophy whose goal is to maximize the digital quality while minimizing analog circuitry. The culmination of Yamaha's long experience in digital engineering and design brings together several key elements to create excellent sound quality.

Silent Cinema: The Silent Cinema mode allows private listening of multi-channel music or movies, with an accurate simulation of surround sound, through ordinary stereo headphones.

Virtual Cinema: Virtual Cinema lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers.

Night Listening Enhancer: During low-volume listening, such as late as night, dynamic range suffers and some sounds are missed. The Night Listening Enhancer offers two modes, Cinema and Music, each with three levels of effect, to ensure you don't miss movie dialog or quiet passages, or lose overall surround spaciousness.

Compressed Music Enhancer: Compression formats such as MP3, WMA, and AAC generally remove sounds that are undistinguishable to typical human hearing, resulting in a loss of fidelity. The Compressed Music Enhancer regenerates the missing harmonics in compression artifacts and compensates for the loss of low- and high-frequencies to provide improved performance.

Background Video Source: You can combine a video image from a video source with sound from an audio source. For example, you can enjoy listening to classical music while viewing beautiful scenery from the video source on the TV.

Wide-range Frequency Response: The receiver's wide-range frequency response, 10Hz to 100kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players.

XM Satellite Ready: You can listen to XM Satellite Radio by connecting the XM Mini Tuner and Mini Tuner Home Kit to the HTR-5935's proprietary plug. A 50' extension cable is available if the Home Kit's 25' cable is not long enough. XM Satellite Radio offers over 150 commercial-free channels of music, news, sports, comedy, talk, and entertainment to choose from--all in digital quality. During XM playback, you can display the channel number and name, category, artist name, and song title on the front panel. Note: A subscription is required in order to receive XM Satellite Radio.

XM HD Surround Sound: This receiver is capable of XM HD surround which allows for playback of 5.1 digital surround from XM Satellite Radio channels 76 and 113. XM will also broadcast a variety of special shows and live music performances in XM HD Surround.

Neural Surround: Neural Surround has been adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcasts of XM HD Surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements.

192kHz/24-bit DACs: The HTR-5935 uses high quality 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all channels to maximize sound quality.

Speaker Settings: You can use the receiver's menu to manually adjust any speaker settings or compensate for video signal processing delays.

    • Speaker Size: You can select from either No, Small or Large depending on your speaker application.
    • LFE Bass Out: Use this feature to select the speakers that will output the LFE and the low-frequency signals. You can choose from subwoofer, front speakers or both.
    • Crossover: Use this feature to select the crossover frequency for all of the speakers set to small. You can select between 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 160, or 200 Hz. All frequencies below the selected frequency will be sent to the subwoofer and/or "Large" speakers.
    • Speaker Level: You can adjust the output level of each speaker from -10 dB to +10dB.
    • Speaker Distance: Use this feature to manually adjust the distance of each speaker from the main listening position and the delay applied to the respective channel.
    • Center EQ: Use this feature to adjust the built-in 5-frequency band graphic equalizer for the center channel so that the tonal quality of the center speaker matches that of the front speakers. You can adjust from -6 to +6 dB on frequencies 100, 300, 1k, 3k and 10k Hz of the center channel.
    • Audio Delay: You can delay the sound output up to 160 ms to synchronize it with the video image.

Surround Modes: The HTR-5935 offers the following Surround Modes for movies and music:

    • Decoding Formats:
      • Dolby Digital
      • DTS Digital Surround
      • 6.1 Channel Matrix
      • Dolby Pro Logic
      • Dolby Pro Logic II (Music, Movie, and Game)
      • DTS Neo:6 (Music and Cinema)
      • Neural Surround

Soundfields: This unit is equipped with a variety of precise digital decoders that allow you to enjoy multi-channel playback from almost any stereo or multi-channel sound sources. This unit is also equipped with a Yamaha DSP chip containing several soundfield programs which you can use to enhance your playback experience.

    • Video Soundfields
      • 2 channel stereo
      • Music (Pop/Rock)
      • Entertainment (TV sports, mono movie, game)
      • Movie Theater (Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, General)
      • Surround (Standard or Enhanced)
    • Audio Soundfields
      • Stereo (2 channel or 5 channel stereo)
      • Music (Hall in Vienna, The Bottom Line, The Roxy Theater)
      • Entertainment (Disco)
      • Surround (Standard or Enhanced)

Direct Stereo: The Direct Stereo mode allows sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel PCM and analog sources. During Direct Stereo playback, tone control and sound menu settings are not available, no sound is output from the subwoofer, and the front panel automatically dims.

Multi-brand Remote Control: The receiver comes with a multi-brand wireless remote control (RAV308). In addition to the receiver, the remote can control multiple brands of TVs, VCRs, DVD players, DVRs, CD players and Mini-Disc/CD recorders.

    Receiver Input and Output Notes

Assignable Inputs: You can assign the component video and digital audio inputs to the component being used with that input. You can select DVD, DTV/CBL, V-AUX, or DVR for each of the component video inputs. You can select CD, MD/CD-R, DVD, DTV/CBL, V-AUX, or DVR for the three optical and the coaxial digital inputs.

HDTV-compatible Component Video Outputs: The HTR-5935 offers three component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These inputs and outputs have a frequency response of 5 Hz to 60 MHz, which is capable of switching High Definition video sources.

Front Panel Portable Audio Input: In addition to the stereo RCA/composite video front panel input, the HTR-5935 features a 3.5mm mini-jack for a portable audio player, such as an iPod, MP3 player, or Plug-n-Play Satellite Radio tuner. The RCA and mini-jack are not independent, so you cannot plug in more than one device at a time. The audio signals input at the Portable mini-jack take priority over the Audio L/R RCA jacks. There is also a headphone jack on front of the receiver.

Multi-channel Analog Input: This unit has a discrete 5.1-channel analog input for accommodating DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players.

Digital Inputs: The receiver has two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital input.

Speaker and Subwoofer Terminals: The receiver has binding post speaker terminals for all channels. The binding posts can accept bare wire, single banana plugs, and dual banana plugs. The collar surrounding the binding post terminals prevent the use of spade connectors.

Note: This amplifier uses a speaker terminal output for the passive subwoofer that comes with this system and it also has a pre-amp subwoofer output if you choose to hook up an optional powered subwoofer to the receiver.

AC Outlets: The unit is equipped with two switched AC outlets (120V, 60Hz) on the back panel.
