Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
love this avr

This feature-packed receiver works with your 4K TV and Blu-ray player. You'll enjoy cutting-edge multi-dimensional surround sound with decoding for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
This receiver includes some useful options for easy integration into a home automation system. Getting all your gear hooked up is a breeze thanks to Denon's Setup Assistant and Audyssey speaker calibration system. The free Denon AVR Remote app gives you easy control of your home theater from a compatible mobile device.
With built-in HEOS technology, the AVR-X1400H can be easily integrated into a wireless multi-room audio system. Stream music to HEOS wireless speakers in different rooms, and control each room's speakers independently with the free HEOS app. The app lets you control playback, browse music sources, and select which rooms you want to use. Play the same music throughout your home, or listen to something different in each room. You can play music from your own personal library, internet radio, and popular streaming services like Pandora®, Spotify®, and TIDAL, just to name a few.
The AVR-X1400H's Wi-Fi lets you access your own digital music library through your home network, and Bluetooth lets you stream anything you like from your phone or tablet. This powerful receiver even offers convenient playback of several different high-resolution audio formats through the front-panel USB port or a networked computer.
The AVR-X1400H has outputs for seven speakers, so you can enjoy a 5-channel home theater setup in your living room and reassign the rear surround channels to power a pair of speakers in a separate room. Relax to your favorite tunes on the patio while the rest of the family takes in a movie with surround sound in the living room.
Excellent product that does everything I want it to do. The best part is the exceptional customer service provided by the technicians in helping me set it up. I will use only Crutchfield in the future.

Average Customer Review(s):
love this avr
I called and spoke with a tech at Cruthfield before purchasing the receiver and he helped me find the right receiver to meet my needs. The receiver arrived timely . The price was reasonable and I liked the fact that there was no shipping charge. It was easy to set up and has worked well.
Excellent product that does everything I want it to do. The best part is the exceptional customer service provided by the technicians in helping me set it up. I will use only Crutchfield in the future.
Love the new setup process my older model required a PHD in electronics. Also Love the Apple Play interface and the sound is great. This unit has a second room option and it can all be controlled from your Iphone. Connecting a turntable and Sirius/XM was a Bit tricky but the programmable ports fixed that. Overall this unit is one of the best we have owned and the price was right.
Pros: Auto configuration, Second Room sound, very good price, Apple Play Interface
Cons: Connecting Turntable and XM Radio Tricky
Nice features, lots of setup options and poor sound. Even with hours of tweaking the sound, it was tinny and hollow sounding. I paired it with a 12" subwoofer and could not get it dialed in for anything. Was going to use for a home theater, but severely disappointed.
Pros: Setup options and features
Cons: Poor sound quality.
Easy to set up. Crisp sound. Works well with music files on my computer.
Love this receiver will go great with my basement I'm finishing!
1st class ,buy all my gear from Crutchfield ,great stuff ,great people, great price my New Denon AV receiver is awesome would highly recommend ,upgraded from my Onkyo I bought from crutchfield 19 yrs ago still works never a problem just wanted 7.2
Purchased these to replace a 20+ year old Sony 5.1 receiver that failed. (Non-AVR) Decided to take this failure and upgrade to an AVR system. Paired this with new Polk TL250 speakers, reused the Sony powered woofer and WOW - this is real great sound. Even the wife likes this sound much better. The system is now 7.1 and paired this with a logitech remote and Alexa.
Pros: Excellent price point. great sound. Remote App allows setup changes as needed. Easy setup
Cons: Very limited Alexa commands - basically mute/unmute. Volume control is spotty, unable to switch inputs reliably, if at all.
this receiver is ok but the interface and app is less friendly then my Yamaha
First one broke within 3 months. Crutchfield was great gave me a replacement and within 3 months same issue as before the HDMI out stopped working. Only option now is to try and get Denon on the phone and pay to ship it in for repair. This will be my last Denon receiver.
Cons: Broke in 3 months.
I purchased the Denon AVR-X1400H receiver to use in my bedroom so I currently only have front speakers and a subwoofer connected to it. The sound is very full range and clear. I believe if you use the mic to auto set up the sound system it would be a lot easier than the manual setup. By adding the android or the ipad control for this Denon AVR I believe the set up becomes more interactive. The ability to listen to bluetooth audio and watch any video source connected to this receiver at he same time is amazing. If you want to boost any treble, bass or subwoofer level there are many different ways to do this. Also, this receiver runs cool which should allow it to work for years without worry of thermal failure. If this receiver meets your specs give it a try. You have 60 days to send it back to Crutchfield but you will unlikely want to do that.
Pros: Sounds great and is very flexible in the set up options. The receiver runs cool which is very rare these days.
Cons: The power output level might be a little light for a large home theater set up.
AV Receiver was inferior to previous one that I owned; although I was assured by Crutchfield rep that it was the same or better. Worse than that, I returned it via UPS on the 11th. I was assured that refund would be issued within 2-3 business days. Called on the 14th and was told return was received and refund was issued; yet no refund on my American Express. Today is the 25th of the month and still no refund to my credit card. So much for 2-3 business days! Called today and was again told refund is being issued. I would not buy from this company again!
Cons:Crutchfield response on 3/4/2019 We're sorry your purchase didn't work out. Then to make things worse, we didn't get your refund processed in a timely manner, due to an error on our side. We regret that this happened, and will use your feedback to help us avoid these types of errors in the future.
Great AVR at a very reasonable price point. It replaced a NAD unit that died. Plenty of features I like. Now I can pass through 4K movies, listen to the hundreds of songs on my iPhone, listen to my local classical FM station effortlessly. Great remote control accesses all the features easily. Quick mailing service by Crutchfield, my fist go to for electronics. Only negative was the Denon carton was soaked on one side and is unusable. I 've enjoyed the unit for several weeks, so I see no need for the box for a return. I purchased this Denon on the sales associate's recommendation. Sure works for me.
Pros: All features are easy to access via remote control.
Cons: The two plastic knobs feel flimsy and cheap.
First about the Denon X1400H, it is an awesome receiver, I was sure in the dark about how far things had change from my previous receiver (Onkyo HT in a box), the setup was super intuitive, the Audissey thing can be a little tricky but I used the manual EQ and got everything sounding awesome with my Polk Monitor 40's SII speakers and Polk sub. Tom a tech from the support line recomended this unit as a replacement for an Onkyo that just didn't sound right. and he just right on point on how awesome this unit is for the price. The sound is amazing and the mount of tweeks is great, you can really get in there and set things just like you like. My turntable came alive with this unit! Cruthfield customer support was just amazing, I called with some questions about the setup and they answered on a Saturday!! and the tech was very helpful and knew the unit and helped me with my questions and even explained a little theory. Just awsome service. The Denon is amazing, it has enough inputs and the onscreen setup is great.
Pros: Great price, lots of configuration options, manual eq, onscreen setup, wifi, Heos app, lots of features for this first in the lineup...
Cons: none that I can think of...
The am very happy with the Denon AVR-X1400H. The main reason I purchased this was for the HEOS system. I wanted something that would play music from my server or USB device, that I could control remotely with an Android tablet. The HEOS function exceeded my expectations. The sound quality and features on the Denon are very good, especially for the price.
Pros: Lots of features for the price. HEOS feature works great
Cons: No 4K upscaling
Easy hook up and Audyessy room correction. Online manual could be clearer regarding surround mode options. Great sound for price.
Pros: Vaule. Sound Ease of use. Dialog level option.
Cons: Online manual could be clearer.
Great product - easy to set up and very straightforward operation. Only missing setup is using a second zone limits you to 5.1 playback. Otherwise, great product!
I love it
Easy to setup. The antenna makes sound adjustment easy. Sounds great with my existing speakers. Subwoofer hookup to rca cables is a pain but otherwise it's nice and easy
great surround sound versus prior HTIB
Pros: on screen set up so clear
The sound is good and the bass is great and have to turn it down for some movies. The power out put is OK for what you payed for in a home entertainment system.
Pros: It work great with movies and also blue ray movies easy to set up
Cons: Need a little more power for my home entertainment system but it works.
Does everything I want it to. Sounds good with Klipsch speakers.
This unit the X1400H, I have found is the easiest and most versatile AVR that I've ever owned. Crutchfield has been so kind to me both in sales and service. I did not know that there is a company that treats its customers with such care incredibly magnificent care. Crutchfield is in a league of their own!
Pros: 100% Happy with sales and service.
Upgraded from a Marantz NR1403 and needed 4K HDR passthrough for a Samsung Q6 QLED TV. Considering most of my content will be streamed via Apple TV and sound will be output through Definitive Technology BP9000 speakers, the Denon AVR-X1400H is the perfect mix of technology, inputs and power. Also Crutchfield customer services is simply the best. Tip: Be sure to conduct a firmware update via Ethernet and not WIFI as this will resolve some possible latency issues with certain HDMI cables and other components.
Pros: HDCP 2.2/4K HDR/HDR 10 and Dolby Vision
Cons: No Pre-Outs/The remote is extremely jumpy when changing volume
Great product but even better customer service
Awesome product, good price, very easy to set up!
Little time to setup. Sounds great and I haven't even done a sound check yet. I also have old cheap speakers hooked to it. Well worth the purchase.
Replaced an older Denon model with this one. Thrilled with the new features and sound quality. The new automatic speaker configuration feature made setup a breeze. A bit disappointed that printed manuals are no longer included. You need to lookup the manual online.
Pros: Automatic speaker setup; sound quality; Denon brand and reputation
Cons: No printed manual
Love this receiver. Very easy to setup and simple to use. Sound is great.
Love the receiver and the ARC feature that let's my tv remote turn on the Denon unit for sound. Pushes all my speakers with no issues and the Bluetooth feature is very cool. I shopped a lot of different units in this price range and was about to go with the Sony but then I found this one with more features and the warranty is better. Very awesome!
Pros: Features for the price Warranty
Cons: Instructions are very sparse with the unit so you have to go online.
Great product for the money! Set up was fast and the sound auto configuration was awesome! I didn't realize my old receiver was performing so badly I just thought it was the open room it was in.
Pros: 4K ready and automatic sound configuration
Great replacement for our old Onkyo receiver. Took a little bit to get the sound right, but once it was adjusted and we got the apps for the phone installed, it was awesome. Great product.
Pros: Price, value, features
Cons: Not difficult, but rather lengthy setup to get features and sound right
Replaced and old Yamaha receiver with this Denon, and wow what a difference. The setup/configuration was easy and the sound is amazing. Everything down to the tuning microphone is top quality. Highly recommend.
Pros: Easy setup Great sound Microphone and tripod included for automatic tuning based in seating areas
Cons: None at this point
I have owned a Denon receiver before, but this one actually blows my sox off. All of my video sources use HTMI connections, so hooking them up was super easy. All connections are clearly marked. Switching inputs is super easy no matter how you do it (front panel, remote, cell phone HEOS app, or Alexa. My wife loves using Alexa rather than the remote. The physical size of the unit is relatively small and fits right in to our decor. The visual image seems to be enhanced, since it looks better with this unit, than before. I will trade up to 4X soon (I expect the visual will be that much better). The audio is just awesome! All my music sounds great on the speaker I had moved over to this unit. The environment selections are well thought out and they do make a big difference. Setting the controls by using Audyssey was pleasantly surprisingly good. I look forward to using this unit as my main sound system throughout the house with additional HEOS speakers. Even-though this is the bottom of the "in-command" line, it fulfills all of my present audio/visual needs and has room for future upgrades. I could not be more pleased!
Pros: Ease of installation, ease of use, excellent build, audio sensational, video excellent, whole house capability
Cons: None that I can think of
Really great sound and easy set up!
Works great. Now I use the denom to be the central control of all my perifials with one remote.
Overall good receiver
Pros: Overall good product
Cons: Auto acoustic check system does not give true equalization to speakers
great receiver at a good price. I upgraded my 2001 Denon and I'm impressed with the new features and improved sound. Set up was easy (I have a 5.1 system). Sound clarity and channel separation is noticeably better than my old Denon receiver.
Pros: great sound, impressive features
Cons: none so far
really happy with the sound quality for the price! Super easy to set up with included microphone and stand. program walks you through the entire set up so you cant screw up.
Apple Airplay 2 works better than expected!! Fantastic support from Crutchfield during the purchase and amazing support from Denon on a Saturday afternoon while setting the endless possibilities & options built-into this awesome receiver!!
I recently upgraded from a tired, old Sony receiver to this Denon because I wanted something that would decode the newer sound fields. Never owned a Denon product before and I was concerned the menus would be unfamiliar and therefore difficult to navigate, but they're not. Running sound through higher end Polk speakers and a beefy KLH sub (7.1) and the sound is magnificent. Highly recommended!
Love the unit. I have 2 now. It resolved issues with switching to a 4kTV Set up was reasonably easy
It was very easy to set up and it works great. I have not set it up to work with my Alexa yet but will do that very soon.
Pros: Easy setup and Crutchfield had the best price.
Cons: No Cons
Great receiver. Replaced a 10 year old Denon AVR-1911 after I upgraded to 4K. Sound is great and was easy to setup
Pros: Easy setup
Cons: Menu is a little clunky for 2019
After purchasing a new OLED television, I was absolutely shocked with the noticeable difference the new Denon Receiver made in the quality of the picture.
Pros: Great value
Fantastic receiver, it has even improved the color of my TCL 605P 4k tv. One word of caution, my TCL doesnt recognize the Denon for HDMI CEC control. Also not a good fit for Roku TV due to having to manually select inputs for sound once in the Roku home screen.
Pros: Plenty of HDMI inputs for my use. Improved the color of my 4k TV. Lots of DSP for movies, music and games.
Cons: Outdated menu Doesnt fair well with TCL 605P TV. Remotenot backlit nor glow in the dark.
Pro - Lots of features, online streaming works great, solid amp, clean uncluttered remote Cons - setup complicated, menu system confusing but so are all the other brands) The biggest con is the sound. I used it for just music, but found the same using as a AVS, and it lacked clarity, detail, space, and absolutely no ability to handle complex music. Vocals were muddy. So just to be sure it wasn't my ears, I bought an Onkyo 8260 to compare sound. The Onkyo was clear hi and low ends, detailed, balanced, authoritative, and voices had real presence. There was no comparison - the Onkyo took the prize. It's a shame. I had good luck with Denon in years past, but this one misses the boat. Go with an Onkyo.
Replaced a failing Onkyo receiver in my living room and my listening experience improved dramatically. The Denon sounds betters and has better multi-channel audio support than my previous receiver. For the price, you can't beat it!
Pros: Great speaker setup process. Solid receiver with tons of power for my 5.1 setup.
Cons: One thing I would improve is the on-screen interface is a bit dated, feels very 1990s; its favors function over form.
Excelent and versatile equipment.
Changed the way everything sounded in the room. For this price you can't go wrong!
Crutchfield recommended this product to go with my Polk Audio surround sound for an in-home theater. The receiver was delivered in 2 days. It was packaged extremely well to prevent damage and sealed in plastic to prevent moisture damage. Very pleased. Crutchfield is a company you can trust to provide the very best service. Have not yet had a chance to test the receiver but I'm looking forward to it. Thank you.
just what i needed to update my system. thanks for suggesting this model
Had to replace a 12 yo Denon that quit working. This one sounds great and alot of nice features.
Very happy with purchase
Very happy with purchase
Very easy to set up with every connection labelled and color coded. The on screen setup for balancing the speakers worked flawlessly. The help with Critchfield staff was A number one helping me select the this unit. My old Onyko was eight years old and I didn't realize what I was missing from my surround system.
Pros: Easy connections and every connection is labeled. Price was very reasonable.
Cons: Haven't any problems at this time.
Excellent receiver with many features for the price.
I rarely write reviews. The Denon 1400 receiver warranted one. Crutchfield expertly recommended this receiver to me, and I have been superbly impressed with its' performance: set-up, usability, compatibility with Apple products and Amazon Echo. If you're on the fence buying this receiver or any Denon receiver, you will be making a great investment in your A/V collection.
Pros: Buy it and be impressed.
Cons: Don't buy it, and be sad.
I bought this to replace a 10 year old Onkyo receiver and to go with my new Samsung Qled . The Onkyp still worked but the remote ( even after buying a new remote control ) does not respond until you wear your finger out continuously pressing buttons . For the price I am very happy with this receiver . I love the Bluetooth ability to listen to music from my Iphone . Also the HDMI pass-through is nice as the old Onkyo didn't have that feature . I'm not an audiophile but I love music and we like to watch movies occasionally and this certainly does what I want and need plus .
Pros: Wireless and Bluetooth
Cons: None so far
I found the Denon unit a perfect replacement for my ancient Pioneer receiver in my home theater system. I connected the unit to my 4K Samsung tv using the ARC HDMI input and followed the setup screens displayed by the Denon receiver on my tv. I found the microphone input measured the sound accurately and compensated for the speaker placement that is not symmetrical due to the room layout. Sound quality from each of the tv apps is excellent. The dolby digital stereo output is superb. I would highly recommend this unit.
Does everything I need it to do. I have Zone 2 connected to a wired whole home system and it sounds great.
Pros: Customizable settings for everything needed. Zone 2 for whole home sound.
Cons: HELOS app could be better.
I have been using the same great Technics receiver for 20 years. I put off replacing it because I did not think anything new could improve on the sound or usefulness. I was wrong. Wow! A lot has changed in 20 years. This Denon instantly recognizes each of the attached components and tweaks the speaker settings and sound mode for the best settings. This Denon easily connected to my wi-fi and paired well with my blue tooth devices. The HELOS App has been easy to use. I love being able to control the receiver from phone, including turning it on/off, setting the music source, streaming from my phone, and playing music from the USB. Even though my old receiver had DTS and 5.1 and surround sound etc, this new receiver processes the sounds even better through the same 20 year old Cervin Vegas that had been connected to the old receiver.
Pros: Easy to set up Easy to connect to wi-fi Easy to pair with bluetooth Easy to use app Easy to control Great sound quality
I did not think a receiver would make much difference in the sound. But I was wrong. There is a noticeable improvement over my seven-year-old receiver. In addition to performance, this is by far the easiest to set up piece of audio equipment I have owned.
Replaced a 15-year-old Denon AVR and I am pleased with the difference in sound The 1400 connected easily to my Panasonic plasma TV, Panasonic Blu-Ray, and DirecTV Genie via HDMI. I kept my Infinity bookshelf speakers and subwoofer and they sound great. The center channel has cleared up the dialogue in movies. The Audyssey setup failed for one speaker (technician error?) so I set up the speakers manually with ease. The setup screens are text-based and required some trial and error when I got into the sub menus. The manual is over 200 pages and is worth downloading. The index helped me find the topics I was looking for and identify the button pushing sequence on the remote. I need more study time to discover all the features.
Pros: Sound and ability to adjust. Wi-FI and Bluetooth. Works with my DirecTV RC73 remote.
Setup was easy with the onscreen display. OSD does look dated and is slow. The Audyssey eq does a good job imo, however make sure to check over what it set everything to. It set my speakers to Large and the crossover way too low despite having a dedicated sub.
Unit is functioning as expected, and handles multiple zones well. Plenty of power to drive existing speaker set. Not an audiophile, but surround is much better than older Sony unit. Onscreen setup went fine, although the interface is definitely dated. Haven't done autocalibration yet but will update once complete.
Great product but customer service was the bes. Never purchased from Crutchfield before and will be a customer for life
Pros: Excellent customer service
I like the included microphone for room calibration
Pros: Easy setup and included microphone for calibration
Cons: Denon app is not easy to setup
A great price from Crutchfield on a great AVR from Denon. Delivery was quick. Setup was actually pretty easy. We use this in a two zone setup and it has functioned as advertised. We enjoy being able to both stream music and get home theater surround sound out of one unit. The smart phone app makes it a breeze to change setting as need.
Pros: Easy setup Versatile Contemporary feature set
Cons: Occasionally the CEC doesn't respond to Apple TV and change input source as expected, but this is rare and it works fine 99% of the time.
Easy to set up had it set up and watching a movie in about 30 minutes. This systems improves the quality of sound coming from my Onkyo speakers compared to my old system.
Pros: Sounds Great with my Onkyo's
Simple to setup! TV menu needs work. Wish it had Goggle Play but that may be a licensing thing!!
Pros: Low price, great sound
Cons: the display menu that cast to the T.V. need a little more work.
You're forced to go online for the manual, and it's pretty cryptic in certain sections. All I needed was 4 speaker stereo, but could never get the sound levels to be even across all 4 speakers, even after following the guide and calling Crutchfield support. I ended up just putting the speakers in parallel and setting the receiver to 4 ohm load. That was another area of inconsistency, many functions were controlled by the remote while others were done with finger contortion on specific buttons on the front panel (and with multiple tries). Finally, the OSD absolutely SUCKS. Think old 8 bit video game text. This was one of the main features I needed for the receiver...easy to read input labels on the TV. Absolutely terrible. It's 2018 and manufacturers still seem to struggle with user interface fails. It's as if this stuff is all afterthoughts. I always thought Denon was considered a high end brand. Not impressed at all...
This is the best thing I get for my $$$. Sounds great, I can control and change settings with my iOS remote app with ease and adjust to my liking. Integration with smart home, Bluetooth, 4K, everything I needed. I have no regrets
I Received the Denon AVR-X1400H about a week ago and so far I am very impressed. My previous Denon receiver only lasted about 15 years and I wasn't going to buy another but the price and features of the AVR-X1400 convinced me to take another chance . The set up instructions enabled me to pretty much get all of my components up and running. Although I do not have a surround sound speaker set up yet the traditional stereo speaker arrangement I do have sounded much better with the new receiver. Being able to run the TV , Bluetooth devices, and control sound in multiple rooms through the receiver has really impressed this 66 year old luddite! For the set up situations I couldn't figure out myself the Crutchfield technicians were a phone call away and they were great...one of the main reasons why I do business with Crutchfield.
Pros: Great sound, easy to set up & use, great support from Crutchfield technicians.
Cons: None yet I just hope it outlasts my former Denon receiver which I feel died prematurely.
The setup and operation of this unit was very easy. Great unit for the money.
Pros: The setup was very easy.
Easy set up...sounds great. Highly recommend to all!
So far, I love this unit. Easy to install, set up, and use.
This is a great receiver for the price. Have it connected in my media room to control two other zones in my house. Use the heos app to turn it on. Turn on amazon music and airplay what ever songs I want. Works perfect. And as alway crutchfield ROCKS!!!!!
Pros: Price Heos app Airplay
Cons: Can get hot
Great receiver. Awesome value. I would definitely buy again.
Great equipment, easy hooks up
Easy set up. Amazingly better sound than my old receiver. The person that helped me choose this receiver was super helpful, as are all the customer service people at Crutchfield. Would recommend this product and Crutchfield to anyone
Awesome unit. Very excited to own and use it
I love how easy it was to set up and how great it sounds. Thank you so
Easy setup, easy to connect Bluetooth, waiting on my new Klipsch speakers to arrive
Easy to set up with 7 channels of sound. MY first Denon receiver won't be my last.
I don't hear that separate distinct stereo effect from my rear Bose surround sound speakers that I heard with my 16 year old Yamaha receiver. Also, I sometimes lose the signal to my cable TV picture if I keep it turned off.
This receiver does everything I need it to do. Setup was fairly easy but the display looks a little chunky. It take a little while to figure everything out so that I can just tell my wife to "hit this button" or my son to "turn on this setting for the game". This one replaces a dual zone receiver I bought 10 years ago from Crutchfield. I recommend both Denon products and Crutchfield.
Great sound. Lots of features that my old Denon didn't have. Very pleased
I was on the fence on buying a receiver so I decided to go with this one and I am glad I did! Set up was easy and pushes enough power for the speakers. No problems connecting to anything, I am pleased with this receiver.
This receiver is so easy to setup compared to my older Denon 590. Another great thing is that it automatically turns on and off and switches sources, so i just grab a remote and it starts working.
Pros: Setup, sound, integration
Cons: Can't think of any
Couple of thoughts: * I like that I can disable most of the inputs that I do not use. * I dislike that I cannot disable the Heos internet radio stuff. I have a steam shield for that. * I don't think the audessy sound setup was that amazing. I had to tweak the volume for the center and rear channels. * Listening to stereo tracks during surround sound can sometimes not sample well. Again, that is probably not an issue with the receiver. It's been a couple residences since I've had a surround sound setup so this could be par for the course. * Setup Wizard was awesome.
Works well with Apple TV and my surround sound.
Very good receiver, such a good product with a wide range features normally only available in higher end products.
I've only had limited experience with it, but so far its been just ad advertised!
I like the product . The ARC function is not very good for surround sound. I had to purchase an optical audio cable to improve the sound
Great sound and picture. Command issues at times between my Samsung smart tv and the avr1400, fighting to be boss. Frustrating issue!
Pros: Great sound and picture
Cons: Command issues at times between my Samsung smart tv and the avr1400, fighting to be boss. Frustrating issue!
Great receiver for the money, however I returned it and upgraded to the 3400 b/c I ended up going with the Elac UB5s and wanted the ability to add external power later on. Otherwise, the 1400 would have been perfect to power the B6.2s. Love the Denon line!
My receiver was delivered a couple of weeks ago and I have not found anything to dislike. I bought a Denon receiver ten years ago and I found the controls were very nonintuitive. I never got comfortable with that receiver. This new one has none of those problems. The controls are intuitive, the functions do what they claim to do, plus this receiver has more power and cost half of the ten year ago receiver. Denon has gone all-in on HDMI, no component or composite inputs, but for today's technology that is alright.
Good quality and sound.
Pros: Easy to install
Receiver works reasonably well and is relatively easy to set up. However, the heos multi room functionality runs into issues syncing between zones
This receiver lived up to all my expectations. It was easy to set up, and has enough power to easily drive five speakers and a sub-woofer. The 4k capabilities was what I was looking for, and it works wonderfully. For the price, you can't beat this Denon for quality and output.
Works great and I am very pleased with the sound quality. Upgraded from a Denon AVR-1312 to make sure it would have 4K video capability as well.
This is a phenomenal product. my 30+ year old Denon PMA-500V amplifier finally died, and I'm amazed at the now-current features the 1400 includes. The setup wizard and included microphone are terrific, the networking, zone controls and clean power and noteworthy. And the outstanding support Crutchfield gave me in arriving at this choice was top notch. I am torn between using the full 7.2 or breaking into two zones so that I can listen to two separate sources in the same room at once. I was SO happy when I realized I could have the radio on in the back of my office and the computers/TV on the "front" -- this is accomplished by assigning the rear speaker pair to "zone two." The 7.2 surround is terrific... so this is a touch long-term choice, do I stick with two zones or setup for great surround?
Pros: Great guided setup, terrific, clean power.
Cons: The black mid-line buttons on the front panel are hard to read, study them up close at first so that you are aware of what's available on the front panel!
I ordered this to replace a 15 year old SONY receiver. Despite no hard copy manual, the installation went well. We Love it!
Pros: Back of unit is very easy to work with, I have lots of cables back there.
Cons: Some hard copy installation instructions would help. I ended up printing a bunch of pages.
Wonderful Product, can't stop playing with it....
Pros: Everything about Denen AVR-X1400
Excellent, beyond my expectations !!!!!!
Pros: Best overall sound. Easy set-up, connections.
I'm very happy with my Denon amps. I purchased this one to run a couple more zones around my house. The Crutchfield rep was VERY helpful when I called with questions. Even emailed me instructions after the call so I had a record. Using the App is really, really helpful.
it sounds pretty good but I have a Samsung smart TV and the receiver and the TV are always fighting to see who is boss. I tried to go to the Web sight to down load the manual and was denied access. The tech guy from Crutchfield said he would mail me one and never did. I know what I want the thing to do and it fights the whole way. Not real satisfied
Cons:Crutchfield response on 6/4/2018 Sorry for the issues in getting you access to the owner's manual, Dave. We believe the mail might've slowed up by the Memorial Day holiday. One of Crutchfield's tech support gurus, Toohey, emailed Dave another copy of the manual and resent a copy of the email. Dave also has access to our tech support for immediate help, since he made his purchase from Crutchfield.
Hardware rating is a five, online documentation is a 5, printable documentation is a 2 (choice of printing 280 pages or tedious printing small sections; searching out needed information made setup more difficult that necessary), printed documentation zero -- all this in comparison to previous Denon AVR-1613E3.
Pros: Good sound
Cons: Lacks printed documentation
Great receiver for the money. It has a lot of features, looks solid and high quality. Great sound.
Pros: fantastic sound
Cons: difficult setup
First time buyer from Crutchfield and I was extremely impressed with the sales process of showing me via links to the products I was interested in. The sales person was very knowledgeable on different manufactures and products. I bought with confidence that I found what I needed.
Pros: Easy to use website, great customer service, fantastic sales personnel.
Cons: I experienced no cons during my few phone calls and ordering process.
Really like this unit. Powers my Paradigm Monitor series speakers well. Easy set up and great sound and video quality. Only real issue is integration with my new Samsung 8000 series tv. I'm noticing a little lag between the audio and video. May just be a setting to adjust.
Pros: Sound and video qualitu
Cons: Integration with Samsung tv. No universal remote.
The Denon AVR-X1400 works well. Set-up was easy but learining the navigation menu was not. The Denon remote app is a big help!
Pros: Sounds great.
Cons: Difficult set-up.
There is a lot to like about this receiver. The only reason for 4 stars versus 5 is the Alexa integration isn't perfect. I am still messing around with it, but there are few things I think it should do that it doesn't (like being able to tell Alexa to play a song in a certain zone). I've been unable to get it to switch inputs via Alexa ("Alexa.. swtich to HDMI Zone 1 on Family Room". Maybe it's Alexa... maybe it's me, but I am 99% sure I am doing what the instructions say.
Pros: It does everything the specs say it does.
Cons: Alexa integration isn't perfect
Marshall, one of the consultants at Crutchfield, was not only instrumental in helping me chose the correct system, but was a pleasure to talk to. The Denon AVR-X1400H is an excellent choice for a surround entertainment system controllable with your smart phone and access with Heos.
Easy set up and a Antarctic piece of equipment. shipping was fast and everything was as promised. Can't wait for the wireless speaker to be delivered in April.
Excellent product, pleased with my purchase.
Amazing technology and the sound is alive.
We upgraded our audio system and the Denon replaced a 2000 vintage Yamaha A/V receiver. Extremely pleased with the Denon. Wi-Fi capability is very good and the HEOS app is great from either our iPhones or iPads. Set up via the on screen menus was pretty straightforward including the speaker (Polk RTi-A5's and CSi-A4) calibration. For a "deeper dive" the owner's manual on the Denon website is very good. Will probably buy HEOS speakers for the bedroom upstairs in the near future. Buzz at Crutchfield was great. They have a very knowledgeable staff.
Pros: great connectivity great sound love the HEOS app setup reasonably straightforward
Totally in love with it! Purchased to replace an outdated Denon. Looked at several in the line, as well as some Yamaha, Onkyo & Harmon-Kardon. This solves several of the shortcomings with my old unit (circa 2006). Setup was super easy with the on-screen menus & much better performance from Audessy. Remote is drastically better the before. Sound quality is fantastic from all sources (wouldn't say I'm a true audiophile, but I am pickier than most). Handles 4K, HDCP 2.2 well. Family is able to run it easily without jacking up the settings. The Android app is also a nice addition, no issues there. I don't have any HEOS speakers, but have tried streaming from the app. It's ok but wish there was a screensaver option for the TV (same for the internet radio). Not much use for it unless they bring in Google Play Music, just Pandora through the Roku instead. Absolutely no regrets. In a 6.1 configuration, paired with DefTech ProCinema 600 package & 1000 ProCenter, Roku Premier+, Samsung 8500 4K blu-ray, all to an LG 65in OLED.
Pros: sound quality 4K handling easy setup via on-screen menus
Cons: somewhat clunky HEOS app & onscreen presentation for BT audio no Google Play Music option for BT no TV screensaver for tuner/BT/HEOS sources
Amazing A/V receiver! The available video inputs are great: all HDMI inputs support 4K/HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 with Dolby Vision/HDR10/HLG. Build quality is great and looks premium (plastic-finished front, aluminum body, plastic feet that do not rattle) -- you would have to touch and feel to tell that the front is plastic. ECO mode is a great feature. Auto ECO automatically turns on ECO mode (lower wattage and reduces bass) when the volume is set to 45 or lower. Sound output is amazing even for a entry-level, lower wattage A/V receiver (80W/channel). Previously, I had a Yamaha RX-V679 and I actually prefer this Denon AVR-X1400H's sound production over the Yamaha even after tweaking. To me: Denon is fully balanced across the full range of lows/mids/highs; in the Yamaha, it felt like the mids were significantly lacking (requiring increasing the Dialog level and center channel level). Denon's Audyssey MultEQ XT speaker setup was long (10 minutes), but very accurate and required very little tweaking (this is compared to Yamaha's YPAO which was quick, but I had to do a lot of tweaking). One thing to note is that the GUI menu overlay over 4K does not work (i.e. volume/mute display). It does work for Setup; the receiver just switches the display to 720p temporarily to display the GUI menu on screen then switches back. You just have to live with looking at the receiver's display for changing volume and the 5 second delay for your TV to switch display output when doin
Pros: Guided setup, 4K Dolby Vision/HDR10/HLG support, Audyssey MultEQ XT speaker setup was accurate and required little tweaking, wifi support, Denon smartphone app support (over wifi), ECO mode
Cons: GUI overlay does not work over 4K video (i.e. volume display); only works for setup menu and output needs to switch to 720p for setup screen, No video upconversion/enhancement, Audyssey MultEQ XT can take awhile to setup (10 minutes)
Excellent receiver. Runs my 18 year old Cambridge Ensemble speakers beautifully - clear, non-boomy but solid bass, good transient response. Just what I was looking for: they sound great on jazz, classical and rock. Harley and Jenny were great advisors! Great Crutchfield price and delivery. Very happy indeed!
Just installed two of these - so far they work great and sound great!
Overall very satisfied
Pros: Great sound at affordable price
Cons: Air play challenging to setup

Before it enters the standby mode, "Auto Standby" is displayed on the front-panel display of this unit and the on-screen menu.
ECO Mode: This receiver is equipped with an ECO Mode function that allows you to enjoy music and movies while reducing the power consumption during use, Eco mode adjusts the maximum power available according to the volume level selected to reduce power consumption.
Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.
Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.

It seemed the best choice of options for my needs it was a great deal! I am primarily looking for a very high quality audio receiver with the ability to utilize my iphone input since Apple has got us to move all of our music to iTunes. The connectivity for all the rest of my devices is also there. Audio processing I am happy to pay for, but I am not really interested in paying for video processing when all my other devices already do that. Overall this is a great unit for my needs. Thanks! On advice from Dwight and it fit my requirements and budget [ Rodney Oct 11, 2018 ]
I chose this because it had a B channel I can use for my outdoor speakers when we are swimming in the pool and hanging out in the backyard. It also gives Bluetooth capability to listen to a movie or show after the kids have gone to bed without blowing the house up. It also has 2 optical inputs that are assignable, which I like for flexibility of set up. One last feature I was looking for was the ability to set a remote IR eye so I can hide this receiver in a cabinet out of sight. [ Miles Oct 09, 2018 ]
It has slightly better features than the AVR-S740H and was heavily discounted since it's not the latest model. [ Dustin Oct 06, 2018 ]
Crutchfield rep Carson helped me with the order. I explained to him my home theater speakers and he recommended this receiver. After looking into further and reading reviews online, I decided it was a good receiver for the money. [ Michael Oct 06, 2018 ]

Wanted to be able to use blue tooth, wifi, air play but most importantly control music from libraries from one location. Seems like Heos will work. The built in HEOs into a receiver wasn't that much more then the stand alone $350 Heos link. Made no sense to buy the link when for an extra $50 I get an entire receiver [ sean Jul 10, 2018 ]

Love the aesthetics of this receiver! Looks user friendly. Like the way the plugs on the back are laid out. Next is the power, the ability to use multi zones with two different sources, Wi-Fi and blue tooth enabling. Seems like I can do a lot of different things with it down the road. This is my First Denon product, so we will see. [ C Mar 09, 2018 ]

No, there are newer and more expensive options. I've bought this one when the price went down from $600 to $400. It's a great receiver for my needs. [ Igor Mar 05, 2019 ]
You would use a different zone selector. Zone 2 not main speakers. [ Ricardo Feb 28, 2019 ]
Yes it dose, and it will switch the hdmi pass through as well. [ William Feb 10, 2019 ]
I don't have a record player so I can't answer you question. [ MILO M Jan 11, 2019 ]
Short answer is yes. Took a while to get the setting right but works great! Had to look at a you tube video to trouble shoot. [ MICHAEL D Jan 08, 2019 ]
In order to output to zone 2, make sure you have your receiver's amp assignment set to zone 2. To check this, access the GUI or menu and select: Speakers/Manual Setup/Amp assign. Make sure you have an analog backup aside from optical or digital coaxial connections. You will need this backup connection because most models cannot convert (DAC) the digital input signal which is needed for zone 2 output. Also make sure zone 2 is selected on your Denon remote, the correct zone 2 source is set, and the zone 2 volume is adjusted. [ DON Jan 12, 2019 ]
Analog sources only on zone 2. [ ERIC Jan 11, 2019 ]
A 4K TV with HDMI ARC? No; these are not requirements but the Denon does support the options should you choose to upgrade. It's compatible with regular HDTVs as well. I hope that helps My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan [ Ryan Jan 07, 2019 ] Staff

Not a real audio geek here, but I don't see why not. Working great with my in wall 5.1 setup. [ Craig Nov 27, 2018 ]
Should be able to, I am sing Wharfdale and Polk audio speakers [ Murali Nov 27, 2018 ]
I would say yes. I have Focal speakers hooked up to this unit but I have old Bose speakers hooked up to my old Denon AVR-4310CI which work well. [ Walter Nov 27, 2018 ]
It should. The amp connects via RCA so you would need positive and negative connections at the end of the wires coming from each speaker into the unit to have RCA style plug ends. If they don't already, it may be worth buying the ends. You can get those here too [ Luke Nov 27, 2018 ]
If your TV has Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) and it is turned on, then the Denon AVR will be able to power the TV on and off through the HDMI. [ ERIC Nov 25, 2018 ]
To be honest, I have not set mine up yet to play more than one zone. It is however on my to-do list. Please let me know if you get that question answered. Thanks! [ William Nov 12, 2018 ]
Yes it has and I'm using the subwoofer output. [ Steve Aug 30, 2018 ]
It's at the top left about 2 inches over from the edge. Great receiver. [ David Aug 30, 2018 ]
I can't answer this question at this time. I bought this device for new home build I'm am doing so I haven't hooked it up yet. [ KEVIN Jun 27, 2018 ]
Yes it does. I watch my TV through my Denon. [ Steve Jun 25, 2018 ]
I do this using individual zones all the time. Two speakers in zone 1 and two speakers in zone 2. Send the cable box to zone 1 and HEOS/spotify to zone 2. Easy! [ David Aug 30, 2018 ]
I have wondered the same thing while listening to Pandora on HEOS, but haven't spent anytime trying to figure it out. I would like to know if there is a remedy. Thank you, Steve Shuck [ Steve Apr 28, 2018 ]
You cannot, no. You can share sources with other HEOS speakers/players on the same network but you cannot use HEOS speakers as wireless surrounds with the AVR-X1400H. [ Ryan Dec 18, 2017 ] Staff
In order to do this you have to run analog cables (RCA) from your source (blu ray player, cable box, TV audio) to the AVR. DENON has a great explanation of this on their FAQ portion of their website. [ David Aug 30, 2018 ]
I'm afraid the HDMI & optical/coax digital inputs on the Denon AVR-X1400H are not supported sources that can be wirelessly distributed through the HEOS system. For more details or to discuss further, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. [ Larry Jul 07, 2017 ] Staff
