Next-level home theater

There's a lot to love about the Denon AVR-X3400H. This 7.2-channel receiver offers high-quality sound with abundant wireless streaming features, plus full support for 4K Ultra HD video. It can even upscale standard- and high-definition video signals to 4K quality. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X bring movie soundtracks to life with immersive, multi-dimensional surround sound effects.

Streamline your music with HEOS

Built-in HEOS technology lets you access all your music — from your personal library, internet radio, and popular streaming services like Pandora®, Spotify®, and TIDAL — through the 'X3400H.

This receiver can be easily integrated into a wireless multi-room audio system. Stream music to HEOS wireless speakers and components in different rooms, and control each room's sound independently with the free HEOS app. The app lets you control playback, browse music sources, and select which rooms you want to use. Play the same music throughout your home, or listen to something different in each room.

Multi-zone music and video

The 'X3400H's surround back channels can be used in whichever of four different configurations suits you best, starting with a standard 7.2-channel surround sound setup. You can use the surround back channels as height channels in a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup, or to bi-amp your front speakers for more powerful sound.

Or, you can set up a 5.2-channel surround sound system in your living room and use the surround back channels to power a pair of speakers in a second area like a kitchen or patio. A "Zone 2" HDMI output lets you watch video from two separate sources in your living room and a second room.

    Good receiver, but not perfect.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only had for a month and seems like a good receiver. Though the front face seems a little cheap.... especially the volume knob. Set up was easy and just have to get used to using the menu options to fine tune audio. My biggest gripe is that Pandora Premium does not work on HEOS. i spoke with Denon because I couldn't skip more than 7 songs in an hour. They told me they're aware that their HEOS app has not been updated to work with Pandora Premium and they only thing I can do is submit feedback through the HEOS app. And, just my luck, the HEOS app is glitchy and won't allow me to submit feedback about the Pandora issue.

Pros: Easy menu navigation, sounds good

Cons: Does not work with Pandora Premium, HEOS app glitchy, remote is not backlit, user manual not included... can only be accessed online.

    Well worth the money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is awesome! Denon has won me over !! I used to own a Yamaha AV receiver. 10 years ago it was top notch. I didn't go with Yamaha because I had not heard good things about them lately. I tried an Onkyo receiver because it had great reviews. I was not happy at all. I spent a little bit more money on a Denon and boy am I glad that I did. Best decision I've made in a long time. Continuously impresses me on a daily basis. Sounds amazing. Easy to set-up and to use even with the crappy little manual they give with it. I personally think that the audyessy mic did a fairly good job calibrating my speakers. I haven't even tried to manually tweak them since setting it up. The Accu calibration on Onkyo is terrible. Crossover levels were not even close to my speaker specs. The Denon is Effortless to switch between median inputs. If I turn on my Apple TV everything switches to play the Apple TV automatically :) Very intuitive.

Pros: Great sound Easy to use

    Cons: Haven't found any yet

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Yamaha RX-V671 surround sound receiver quit working, lost all sound so I upgraded to the newest Yamaha RX-V685. I was not at all happy with the sound quality (diction) on the RX-V685 unit so I sent it back. I decided to try a DENON AVR-X3400H, Wow, what a pleasant surprise, DENON has put a lot of time and effort in design and content of the owner's manual. Very easy to find topic matter and understand. I did not have to call tech support at all during the setup. I setup everything the unit supported (DVD, TV, Netflix, Amazon, Zone 2 to a remote amp, HEOS, Internet, and music from the USB drive). The Audyssey program (setup of the speaker system) was an astonished experience as well, DENON really takes the sound system seriously. One other note, I have had to use Crutchfield tech support on the Yamaha products, understanding Yamaha products was difficult for me. I just wanted to give their tech support personnel a high-five, they are really-great to work with. They really know their stuff.

Pros: I have been a customer since 2005, outstanding Tech support and setting up complicated equipment made easy.

Cons: A little more work needs to be done on the user manual regarding using HEOS and Zone 2 output volume.

Prefer the denon matrix switching, while using the sub-zone hdmi output, if compare with other similar priced receivers. It allows selecting all hdmi sources. Ohter receivers limit the output in the sub-zone to only three inputs. The switching action is also smooth.

    Cons:

    Sounds great

Audio sounds great and setup & calibration was easy. I would have given it 5 stars but I receive a HDCP 2.2 error message when using my Channel Master Stream+ as the source and my Optoma HD28DSE projector as the monitor out. (Connecting the Stream+ to the projector directly works perfectly fine.) Talked with support from Crutchfield, which is always staffed by knowledgeable people, but they can't fix this.

    Pros: Sound, Calibration

    Cons: HDCP

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This AVR has plenty of power and I chose it over the Yamaha Aventage RX-A870 because Audioholics.com did bench tests on both receivers and this Denon proved to have better output power per channel and better Preamp Voltage in case you want to add an amplifier. Audyssey setup is lenghty. I preferred manual setup. Audyssey is hit or miss. You can also run Audyssey and tweak it. I paired this AVR up with Jamos S Series Speakers (S807 Towers, 83C Center Speaker, S 803 Bookshelf for Surround, and two Polk RC80i In-Ceiling speakers for Atmos) for a 5.1.2 Setup. It is plenty of power but would love to add an amp in the future for my 3 front channels. HEOS music intergration works ok; Heos App is weak. Bluetooth works fine with Android but it doesn't appear as an available device on Apple products, but works great with Airplay anyways. Spotify works seamlessly while connected to the same WI-FI network as the AVR and shows album cover on the TV/Screen while the song plays. HEOS also provides internet radio which is cool but I don't use that. Menu has plenty of options to play with. It connects to Alexa but google how to do it because its not that easy. Once it does connect it works but Alexa its limited in what it can do, not the AVR's fault. If i say "play music in theatre" Alexa turns on the AVR and plays my favorite music. But you must always specify to Alexa what to do "in theatre" or whatever word you name your AVR on HEOS App. I chose thea

Pros: Power Output is solid. Airplay 2 works seamlessly. Now it is compatible with Siri and Google Assistant which is the best (will try soon)

Cons: Alexa is just ok HEOS App can be better but works Audyssey MultEQ Editor App costs $19.99 if you want to edit the target curve per channel or set-up and calibrate your speakers accurately. This is good to lower the hz on your subwoofer down to 15-20hz. Denon should include this app or build it in the AVR like Yamaha did. Its not a deal breaker though. $19.99 is doable. Heats up when hearing music on all channels driven for long periods. Should be fine for movies.

I upgraded from an Onkyo that was not working properly. I was hesitant because I don't like change. This unit has been great. Once hooked up, everything works. It is easy to use and sounds great.

Pros: Airplay works well. As you setup the inputs, you can rename them so it easy to remember what the various inputs are.

    Cons:

    Quality, Plenty of Power

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this unit to replace a Marantz SR5009 that I was having constant problems with. Easy set-up, and has a nice clean appearance with a very easy to read display. Powers my 5.2 system of RSL speakers with dual subs with plenty of power to spare. Wasn't sure if I'd like the HEOS system to tune in internet radio and music services (Pandora, Tidal) but after using it for 10 days now, it's easy to use and I like it. I do wish that there was a way to sort the HEOS Favorites into some order or grouping. As you add Favorites, they're locked into the order entered. No way to go back and group or sort them. Build quality is excellent from what I can tell from the outside. So far, it's performing beautifully and I'd buy it again. A big selling point for me was Denon's 3-year warranty.

Pros: Clean appearance Quality build Plenty of power 3-year warranty

    Cons:

    Good value! Good power.

Mark from Los Angeles, CA on 11/19/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's big & heavy; I like that. I also liked Denon's built-in setup process; I feel it did a much better job with its microphone+algorithm than my other receivers have done (I'm looking at you, Sony). The result was much better sound coming from my speakers, especially the center and rear channels. This Denon really blows away the very highly rated Sony receiver (only 2 yrs old!) that I replaced. The only thing that I haven't really liked is that occasionally it goes silent and I have to turn the receiver off and on to get it to start working again. Oh, and the remote control doesn't illuminate; I have to resort to using the light from my cell phone to see what I'm doing.

Pros: good sound, good power, effective built-in setup process

Cons: sometimes I have to turn it off and on again to get the sound to come out; remote control is not illuminated

Easy set up and works as advertised. Only had it for 2 weeks. I've always liked Denon products and so far very satisfied. One downside, will not stream Apple TV content in Dolby Digital Surround, only MULTI IN. Denon states they know of the problem but wont have a firmware update until Feb. 2019. Disappointing.

Pros: Easy set up, tons of extras, and great sound

Cons: Will not stream Apple TV content in Dolby, only MULTI IN. Denon states they know of the problem but wont have a firmware update until Feb. 2019.

Easy setup. Sounds good. App is a disappointment. Had more control and a better app on my 8 year old pioneer that finally died. It's a solid receiver but kinda wish I would've gone with the onkyo 820 in this price range but time will tell.

Pros: Ease in setup, solid receiver for the money with many options

    Cons: App is a disappointment...

I had an older arcam avr 400 that just didn't have 4K capabilities. Denon isn't in the same league as Arcam, but I have to say it works really great for a HT setup. It sounds excellent with movies, Music is better than ok, but I have a separate integrated for music anyway. I auditioned the x3400 with the anthem mrx 520 and I think the Denon was as good as the anthem for movies. The anthem was a little better for music, after arc, but not much better. Audyssey xt32 made the bass in my svs sub sound really tight and controlled. I didn't get the same sub results with arc. This is a no brainer for the money.

Easy to set up, sounds great. The only reason for four stars is: the power-cord receptacle and hdmi receptacle on the back of unit don't fit snugly. A slight movement of the receiver can cause them to come loose. Also no paper user manual is inconvenient.

7.1 is nice. Crisp sound even with my old speakers. Too bad only a few movies online have Atmos - bladerunner2047 is about all so far. I might have to buy BlueRay to appreciate the quality. Overall very happy with my purchase at the price point. I'm using the receiver to pass netflix to the 1080 tv until i get a better 4-8k tv. Setup was very simple at the first thing you see on screen.

Great receiver for the money, especially when on-sale. I bought this to replace an Onkyo TX-NR737 that died three months after the warranty ran out, and I'm very happy with my purchase. The unit has a high-quality look and feel to the knobs and switches (yes, some of us do still use knobs). This is my first Denon product, and based on my experience, it will not be the last Denon I purchase.

Pros: Full-featured, Audyssey calibration, easy to setup, quality look and feel.

Cons: Front-panel display font is showing its age, no screen saver when playing music apps

Crutchfield customer from Morrisville, NC on 9/23/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great AV Receiver! Everything I could have hoped for. Denon quality is here with great amplification quality, GUI, remote, and Audyssey set up did more for my home theater experience than I could have imagined. Honestly the Audyssey Dynamic Equalization, Dynamic Volume, and Low Frequency containment features give this AV receiver a clear step up above the other models/brands (full Audyssey suite starts at this model). It takes a little playing around but if you figure out how to use these features correctly you can have fantastic theater quality sound at any volume at any time of day. I have saved quick settings for all the different times of day (full theater sound, evening, late night) I only wish we could save the quick settings without tying them to a specific source. Great dynamic sound and has all the features that you realistically need. Very Happy with my decision.

This is a great update to my 20+ year-old Sony receiver. I love the Heos integration, which means I can play music not only from my digital sources on all my connected Heos speakers, but from vinyl records and CDs connected to my receiver. Set up was uncomplicated and the instructions were clear. The only thing that keeps me from giving this an extra star is the Heos app. It can be difficult to use sometimes, but just fine most of the time.

Pros: Easy setup Plays connected sources to Heos speakers Versatile with multiple inputs and outputs for audio and 4k video

Cons: The Heos app can be confusing and tricky to use at times.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to replace an older Denon unit; needed a 7.2 unit to accommodate the newer set of speakers I just purchased. So far, reasonably happy with the unit but some quirks; hard to tell sometimes regarding the signal input from various sources; would be nice if you could use one button for onscreen review of signals that are being processed; so far (and true for the older unit) the only way I have found is that a minimum of three buttons or controls have to be pushed to view what is going on. Set-up was fine with my speakers, but I had to do it manually because Audyssey (and my understanding most of the others) do not handle bi-polar or dual-sub systems very well; no issues with doing it manually; normally do it that way anyway. I did use the initial set-up app and similar to the first unit, it crashed at the TV audio screen (5/6). Call to Denon got the response "just push the return button on the remote and do it manually response HMMM. Which brings me to my next, and probably biggest complaint; where the heck is the manual? Online Well, if the manual was only a few pages, fine, but a 314 page manual should be included seeing how much a PITA it is to try and scroll through a manual like this online or in a pdf reader. That said, this is a good basic AVR but there are probably better brands out there albeit at a much higher price range... I did get this because it was at a decent price but I had hoped the features would have been a bit better Would have

Pros: good basic AVR easy setup regarding HDMI devices

Cons: average remote no manual included... has to be downloaded initial setup continues to crash no matter the model (regarding TV audio)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon AVR-X3400H has been a very capable AV-receiver with a minimal amount of annoyances. It is far too early to comment on this unit as a long term success, but for the last month it has been very reliable. I have noticed that when playing an external music HD, the order of play is not consistent with the order showing on the PC or other media devices. I have checked the "sort as" and "arrange" to no avail. Outside of that, the match up of this receiver with the Klipsch speakers gives a great home theater sound and concert environment. This unit replaced a Yamaha RX-V675 which only lasted 5 years.

Dealing with Crutchfield makes any purchase a "winner". From a guy in his 80's who has limited technical knowledge, the staff had the patience and skill to make installing the Denon both a learning and pleasurable experience. The end result is another wise purchase decision on my part. Every thing works and even the Denon remote keeps things pretty easy. Doing business with these guys (and gals) never disappoints.

Pros: Even with my rear speakers (in a 5.1 setup) mounted very high in the ceiling, the surround sound experience is powerful. Remote control is straight forward and pretty easy to us.

Cons: Not too much installation help from Denon's written material.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't like all the digital amps these days, but with this receiver, once you find all the menus and sub menus to tweak, all is well. My towers have built in woofers, so I don't run a sub. I am running seven speakers. The bass response and full range is very clear and powerful. I set the volume at 0.5 and it is quite audible in a 12x18' room. I set it up manually because it sounds better for my taste this way. This unit is replacing an Onkyo TXNR 809 that had a chip defect problem. The X3400H has many more options and superior sound then its predecessor. Thanks Crutchfield for excellent customer service in finding the right fit.

Pros: Lots of amp tweaking. Very clear and powerful sound, especially playing music.

Cons: No phono hookup and cheap unlit remote. Denon could do much better in this department.

Great receiver with a lot of features. Everything works as it should. However, it gets extremely hot, even when in eco mode. It actually heats up the room about 10 degrees over 2 hours or so. Granted it is in a 15x12 room, but still, you would think for all this money cooling it would be a concern. Otherwise no complaints and it works and sounds awesome. I have hdmi 2.1s going into it with Dolby vision, and there is no lag or jitter. Highly reccomend this for at home, home theater setups that want to stay in the mid priced setup price!

Pros: True Dolby surround sound Dolby vision support No latency issues No lag Does not cut out Very sophisticated sound setup

Since Denon released their new line on receivers a short while back, I was weighing whether to get a "previous gen" or the latest and greatest. I couldn't be happier with this 3400! Interestingly enough, it is cheaper than the new 2500 due to a recent price drop, and is much more fully-featured! It has 10 more watts per channel, full HEOS integration, and a higher level of Audyssey room correction. I can't recommend this receiver highly enough.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There will be many reviews with all of the technical specs. What I wanted to write is a review of the more practical considerations for buying a receiver like this. I need a receiver that 1) sounded like my old denon (which sounds great) 2) Has all of the modern connections and can upscale to a 4K TV 2) Would allow for sound and video to pass through it when the receiver is off 3) Would be easy to setup and use 4) would be controllable with my smartphone and 5) would have enough power to drive my speakers. The AVR-X3400H does all of this. I bought a Sony before this receiver because the Sony had good reviews, but I thought that the sound was too bright and not warm, like my old denon. This receiver combines an exceptionally clear voice channel for video with really nice warm sounding audio. I returned the Sony and kept this denon. The denon does not have to be on to watch tv, due to a passive passthrough. The audio and video from my satellite travels via HDMI into the receiver, then via HDMI to the TV and works whether the receiver is on or off. The denon is easy to setup and I love the smartphone app to control it. The denon can even play Serius/SM through another app, which is nice. This receiver has 105Watts/channel while my old denon had 110. 105 seems to be plenty for my needs. In summary, if you like the warmer sound of a denon amp and need to modernize your old equipment like I did, or if you are looking for your first AV receiver, buy it.

Pros: Warm sounding, precise voice channel, ease of use, passive pass through, smartphone integration, great price

Cons: None that I have found. This is exactly what I was looking for

After owning Sony receivers for last 16 years I decided it was time to get with the "program" and build a system worthy of all the awesome content available nowadays. After trying an Onkyo TX-RZ820 I was left pretty impressed with the sheer power it offered but I felt I was still missing out on something I could not pin point. So I decided to give the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A880 a try. This particular receiver provided superb clarity and features but I felt it did not have enough power to drive my SVS Ultra Bookshelf Speakers. Then came the Denon AVR-X3400H and that is when I realized I found that "something" I was missing, awesome features, great power, the more you pushed the volume the better it sounded. The setup was easy, it interacted without any glitches with my Blu Ray player and Sony 4K TV, I downloaded the Audyssey App which allowed me to further fine tune it for even better performance. What else could I ask for? Nothing! The Denon exceeded all my expectations and getting the Denon through Crutchfield was icing on the cake! Crutchfield Your Guys Rocks!

I upgraded my home theater receiver from my previous Denon avr-1913 to the Denon AVR-x3400h and all I can say is what a "BIIIIIG" difference in sound quality. The sound is amazing and having the Audyssey XT32 makes a huge difference in room correction vs. the standard MultEQ. I ran Audyssey to calibrate my speakers and it calibrated all my speakers very accurately. I had to tweak a couple of settings to my liking and it was all done. I think it's the best calibration system in the Av world. I watched Saving Private Ryan on my Apple TV and "WOW" the opening scene when they reach the beach it really shook the boots out of me. This receiver has enough power to shake your has down. I'm only running a 5.1 setup but eventually I want to buy some Atmos speakers and see what the hype is all about. It has all the features I need at this time and I'm very happy with the upgrade. If you can afford to buy it give it a try you won't be disappointed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so good . First off, I agree with a review earlier about misidentifying speaker size and sub-woofer integration; it is a little off and requires some extra twiddling. I haven't had it that long, but generally set-up was easy and straightforward. It was a replacement for a 2311C and this was certainly an upgrade in features without breaking the bank. Overall the features and adjustments are more integrated and easier to suss out and adjust. Aesthetically it's a step backwards and lends a bit of cheapness to the look. That said, you're not getting it to look at . solid performance so far with that nice warm tone I associate with my experience with Denon. As far as I've gotten into using it at this point, seems worth the money compared other similar offerings.

Pros: Easy set up, simple to suss out the features, warm Denon tone

Cons: Speaker identification is off somewhat making sub integration take bit more time; not aesthetically pleasing compared to Denon in the past

I'm not blown away, but probably tops in the class

John from Pleasanton, CA on 3/27/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start by saying that this receiver checked all the boxes: The ability to send digital source material to zone 2, an audio return channel (ARC) on the HDMI output, and a standby passthrough on the HDMI. Does all those things. The only real disappointment is the build quality. The volume control feels cheap as does the input source selector. There are less expensive AVR's with much better quality controls. The overall appearance of the unit is average at best. Performance and sound are fine however. Setup using the included microphone wasn't as seamless as I expected, as the front and rear speakers were misidentified as "large" leaving the subwoofer underutilized. Had to fiddle with that. The remote is nothing special.

Pros: Connectivity and feature set Great sound Price/perfomance ratio is very good

Cons: Cheap feeling switchgear Average looks Underwhelming remote

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great AVR with more than enough power for a layman's 7.2 home theater. It has all the features found in a modern Full 4K AVR. The sound quality has exceeded my expectations, especially since this is my first foray into Denon AVRs. It sounds great! I chose this unit because of its features and being able to read the content on the front display panel from a distant of 9 feet. Initially I had problems with the calibration cardboard speaker stand that came with the AVR. So to get the best sound out of this AVR, I attached the Audyssey calibration microphone to a tripod. It was much easier moving the tripod around during calibration. I made sure not to move the tripod more than three feet away from each calibrated position. The closer all calibrated positions are throughout the process, the better the sound afterwards. During calibration I kept the room very quiet in order not to introduce unnecessary sound into the mix. After calibration I checked the speaker setup and changed the front tower speakers from large to small. Now I am enjoying the best sound. I am also checking out all the features of this AVR, though slowly. I really like how the low frequency sound can be contained at night time when people are sleeping. To me it is a great feature because it reduces how much sound travels through walls at night. You can't go wrong with this AVR.

Pros: Ease of use, nice graphic interface, and low frequency containment

    Cons: None so far

Immersive Surround Sound: The Denon AVR-X3400H AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos or Dolby Surround and DTS:X or DTS Neural:X.

    • Dolby Atmos: Dolby Atmos surround sound technology dispenses with channel-based coding in favor of more advanced object-based coding, giving the soundtrack designer the ability to precisely place sounds anywhere in the 3-dimensional space. Now you can enjoy this same award-winning technology at home with the AVR-X3400H that lets you to connect a 5.1 surround sound speaker system and 2 additional overhead speakers or 2 Dolby Atmos elevation speakers for the ultimate home theater experience.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your 2ch or multichannel movie soundtracks using your existing 5.1ch, 7.1ch, or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X: The latest immersive surround sound system, DTS:X features object-based audio coding that lets the soundtrack designer place sonic elements anywhere in the 3D acoustic soundspace, and provides for overhead speakers to deliver a stunning surround sound experience. Along with DTS:X decoding, the AVR-X3400H features DTS-HD Master Audio decoding and other DTS audio technologies.
    • DTS Neural:X: Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format.

Audyssey Platinum: The AVR-X3400H features the Audyssey Platinum suite of powerful DSP features - including MultEQ XT32, Sub EQ HT, LFC (Low Frequency Containment), Dynamic Volume, and Dynamic EQ.

    • MultEQ XT32: Via the supplied measuring microphone, Audyssey MultEQ32 measures all the speakers in your home theater during setup, including the subwoofer, and then generates multiple high precision DSP room acoustic correction filters, which together provide smoothest and most natural tonal balance, regardless of the brand or model of the various speakers. Audyssey MultEQ32 incorporates more than ten thousand individual control points allowing finer details of the room's problems to be captured and corrected. Up to eight listening positions can be measured, configured, and recorded. MultEQ XT32 compensates for both time and frequency characteristics of the listening area based on "Audyssey Setup" measurement results. Selection is done from three types of compensation curves - Reference (default and recommended, L/R Bypass, Flat, and Off).
    • Sub EQ HT: Audyssey Sub EQ HT provides individual DSP tailoring of each subwoofer in a dual subwoofer setup, for deeper bass with improved definition, compared to a single subwoofer configuration.
    • LFC (Low Frequency Containment): Audyssey Low Frequency Containment uses advanced psychoacoustic algorithms to deliver a full range tonal balance, including deep bass, but without disturbing close-by neighbors or family members in other rooms, and features a multi-step adjustment that lets you dial in the amount of containment to your preference.
    • Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume features advanced psycho-acoustic processing to deliver clear dialog and wide range sound at reduced volume levels so that you can enjoy theater-level clarity at whatever listening level you choose.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ also features advanced DSP processing to deliver full range wide-band response, even at reduced volume levels. Dynamic EQ Reference Level Offset provides three offsets from the film level reference (5 dB, 10 dB, and 15 dB) that can be selected when the mix level of the content is not within the standard.

Listening Modes: You can choose between a variety of Denon Original listening modes and two Direct modes.

    • Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. Choose between Rock Arena, Jazz Club, Matrix, Video Game, Mono Movie, Multichannel Stereo, or Virtual (surround from only front speakers or headphones).
    • Direct Listening Modes: The Denon AVR-X3400H offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noise being added to the audio signal.

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-X3400H receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital & DTS modes.
    • Compressed Audio Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Room Size: The receiver's audio output can be set to simulate the acoustics of a Small, Medium Small, Medium (default), Medium Large, or Large room environment. This setting is not an indication of the actual size of your listening area.

Level Adjustments: The AVR-X3400H provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to increase the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The AVR-X3400H offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last).
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Outputs: The Denon AV receiver features color-coded binding-post speaker terminals, 7.2ch pre-outs, and a front-panel headphone jack.

    • Color-Coded Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 4 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color-coded labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-X3400H's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • 7.2Ch Pre-Outs: The AV receiver features 7.2ch pre-amp outputs (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Dual Subs) for connection to external power amplifiers. The pre-outs are variable. For compatibility with dual subwoofer home theater systems, the AVR-X3400H features two discrete subwoofer outputs. With dual subwoofers, which can be placed in different parts of the room, you'll benefit from response averaging, which helps provide smoother and more detailed deep bass, compared to a conventional single subwoofer speaker system.
    • Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Section

HDMI 2.0b: Featuring eight HDMI inputs (including one conveniently located on the front-panel) and three HDMI outputs, the AVR-X3400H incorporates an advanced video section that features the latest HDMI 2.0b specification, including support for 4K/60 Hz Ultra-HD video, BT.2020 Wide Color Gamut, High Dynamic Range (HDR), 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling and 21:9 video pass-through, along with support for 3D content. The AVR-X3400H also features HDCP 2.2 compatibility, a requirement for 4K Ultra HD copy-protected content.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: The AVR-X3400H supports up to 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video @ 60 frames per second on all of its HDMI inputs and output (pass-through only). It will also pass a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signals via HDMI.
    • HDCP 2.2: All of the receiver's HDMI jacks support HDCP 2.2, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All of the receiver's rear-panel HDMI jacks support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. The front-panel HDMI only supports 4K 60/50Hz using format YCbCr 4:2:0 only.
    • Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020): The BT.2020 color standard delivers a much wider color gamut and represents about 75% of the total visual color spectrum, while the current Rec. 709 color standard selected as the color space for HDTVs and early generation 4K Ultra HDTVs covers only 35% of the total visual color spectrum.
    • 21:9 Aspect Ratio: By supporting 21:9 aspect ratio, this receiver can show films recorded in the Cinema Scope format on your TV for a much more immersive video experience. When these types of films are viewed in the usual 16:9 ratio, you see black bars at the top and bottom of the screen; 21:9 eliminates these bars.

HDR Compatibility: HDR provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. The receiver supports HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and HLG.

    • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
    • HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
    • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses no metadata, Dolby Vision utilizes dynamic metadata which adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended. Dolby Vision supports 12-bit color and 10,000 nits.

4K Video Upconversion & Upscaling: The Denon AV receiver's sophisticated video processor provides upconversion from standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i/1080p) sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels), which lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the AVR-X3400H and then connect to your TV with just a single HDMI cable. Only the receiver's main HDMI output supports video upconversion.

Note: When composite or component video signals are used, only 480i video signals are converted to HDMI (up to 4K).

Three HDMI Outputs: The two parallel HDMI outputs distribute the same video signal simultaneously to two separate displays, while the discrete HDMI output allows you to play a different audio/video source in another zone (Zone 2).

Other HDMI Features: The Denon AVR-X3400H AV receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers 3D video pass-through, ARC (Audio Return Channel), Deep Color & x.v.Color support, as well as an auto LipSync function.

    • 3D Ready: The AVR-X3400H AV receiver supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the AVR-X3400H's HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AV receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-500ms) if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 500ms to synchronize it with the video image.
Note: The receiver will support eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) via a firmware update (no ETA yet). eARC will support uncomprerssed audio formats like Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, & DTS HD Master Audio - where standard ARC was limited to Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, DTS HD, and PCM.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the AV receiver is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the receivers HDMI input will be output to your television, via the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output. Once the receiver is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the receiver's speaker outputs.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Analog Video: The receiver features three composite video inputs (480i only), two component video inputs (up to 1080p), and one component video output (up to 1080p). The composite video inputs are output to your television via the receiver's HDMI monitor output (there is no composite video output). The component video inputs can be output to your TV via the receiver's component monitor output or a 480i component video signal can be output via the main HDMI monitor output.

Video Select Function: This receiver can display video from a different source on your connected TV during audio playback from Tuner or HEOS music apps.

Video Modes: You can set the video processing method to match the type of video content. Choose from Movie, Game, Auto, or Bypass.

Advanced ISFccc Video Calibration: The AVR-X3400H is certified by the Imaging Science Foundation to deliver top video quality, and the unit also features advanced ISFccc video calibration controls that allow for precision fine-tuning of the connected HDTV, even if it's not an ISF certified set. You can choose from a variety of Picture Modes - Standard, Movie, Vivid, Streaming, ISF Day, ISF Night, Custom, or Off. The Custom mode lets you manually adjust Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, Noise Reduction, and Enhancer (sharpness).

    Multiroom Playback

Zone 2 (Line-Level & Speaker-Level): Zone 2 allows stereo audio playback of another source connected to the receiver in another room of your home via RCA line-level output or speaker-level output. When using the AVR-X3400H to power speakers in a second room of your home, the main zone is restricted to 5.1-channels. When using the receiver's line output terminals for the second room you need an additional amplifier to power your Zone 2 speakers; the main Zone of the receiver remains 7.1-channel. The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Denon receiver using either configuration or from your add-on amplifier when using the line-output.

    • Compatible Sources:
      • HDMI audio (2ch PCM only)
      • Optical/Coaxial digital inputs (2ch PCM only)
      • Analog Audio Inputs
      • AM/FM Tuner (cannot select different stations for each zone)
      • USB & Bluetooth
      • Network sources (AirPlay, TuneIn Internet Radio, Spotify Connect, HEOS Music apps, & DLNA); the same network source is played in Zone 1 and Zone 2
    • Incompatible Sources:
      • HDMI & Analog Video
      • DSD audio files
Note: Unfortunately, you cannot select USB, Bluetooth and Network sources exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select a network source for Zone 2 when a USB source is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to the same network source as Zone 2.

HDMI Zone 2: The AVR-X3400H also incorporates multi-zone HDMI audio/video distribution for Zone 2 with the inclusion of its HDMI matrix switching functionality. The receiver can send two different HDMI video feeds to two displays at the same time directly from the receiver. HDMI Zone 2 also supports 2ch PCM audio from the HDMI input source selected. The HDMI Zone 2 function is only compatible with the HDMI 1-7 input connectors. It is not compatible with the HDMI 8 input connector or any other input source. Volume of HDMI Zone 2 is controlled from the TV or additional receiver in Zone 2.

Note: If the receiver's Main Zone and HDMI Zone 2 are set to the same HDMI input source, the Main Zone audio will be mixed down to 2-channel audio.

All Zone Stereo Function: The All Zone Stereo function allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2 simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog, digital, or wireless). During the All Zone Stereo mode, only the "Multi Ch Stereo" and "Stereo" sound modes can be selected. You will have independent volume control in each zone. All Zone Stereo mode is useful when you want to enjoy the same music at the same time in multiple rooms during a get together or party.

HEOS Wireless Multiroom Audio: Built-in HEOS technology enables the AVR-X3400H to become part of the HEOS by Denon wireless multi-room audio eco-system, allowing you to stream and control all of your local and online music effortlessly from anywhere in your home with the HEOS App on your compatible Apple iOS or Android mobile device over a wireless WiFi network connection. The HEOS system is a true multi-room audio system that automatically synchronizes audio playback between multiple HEOS devices so that your music (up to 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res audio) coming from different rooms is perfectly in sync and always sounds amazing. You can play the same audio source (other than your connected TV) in every room or any combination of rooms you choose, including a different song in every room.
    • Systems: The HEOS wireless multi-room sound system by Denon can support up to 32 HEOS speakers, receivers, amplifiers, and/or pre-amplifiers (all sold separately) on a single wireless network (IEEE 802.11 g/n; 2.4/5GHz).
    • Sources: The following sources can be distributed through the HEOS multi-room audio system - Receiver's analog, HDMI (2ch PCM), & optical/coax digital (2ch PCM) inputs; built-in AM/FM tuner and TuneIn Internet Radio, HEOS music apps & Spotify Connect; Windows PC & DLNA music servers; Bluetooth & USB audio; plus music libraries stored on your Apple iOS or Android mobile device. HEOS wireless multiroom audio does not support AirPlay or HDMI ARC.
    • Groups: You can join or group up to eight individual speakers or amplifiers into a group of speakers that function as if they were a single speaker. The HEOS App is also flexible enough where you can create up to 16 Groups (2 speakers/amplifiers per Group).

HDMI Monitor 2: The receiver's second HDMI monitor output lets you send the same HDMI audio/video input signal that is being played in the main zone to a second zone (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs).

    USB/AirPlay/Bluetooth Integration

Front-Panel USB Port: This AV receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy a variety of music files from a USB mass storage class memory device; such as a USB thumbdrive or portable digital audio player. Compatible USB storage devices must be formatted in FAT 16 or FAT32. The unit can recognize up to 500 folders/5,000 files. You can use the receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. Crutchfield asked
    Why did you buy this?

Current surround receiver just died. A friend has this receiver and is very happy with it. Read the reviews here and the satisfaction with Crutchfields customer service so decide to give it try. Mainly will be used for movies and cable TV. [ John T.  Dec 07, 2018 ]
Our old denon was not 4K compatible with our TV. [ Ashlee  Dec 05, 2018 ]
    AirPlay 2 support [ Zachary  Dec 05, 2018 ]
My old 16 yr old Onkyo receiver got beat up during intercontinental move. I was going to buy a new Onkyo but the one I wanted had a height dimension that was prohibitive in my set up. This Denon is smaller (shorter) and seems to be able to do lots of new things, so I bought it. Other attractive features are the discrete subwoofer outputs and ability to interface with external amps- features that dramatically improve audio performance/sound quality, especially at higher volume. [ raymond  Dec 03, 2018 ]
Lost confidence in Onkyo products. The one I got from you is already problematic. Denon, I hope is more reliable and a better fit for my purpose [ RANDY  Dec 03, 2018 ]
Compatibility with apple iOS and Alexa, great on board features per specs, good price, great reviews from other people. [ Grangke1  Dec 03, 2018 ]
    last year's model but at a great price [ Ellen  Nov 29, 2018 ]
    Killer sale price! [ Axemanbrill  Nov 29, 2018 ]
    great price [ David  Nov 26, 2018 ]
I needed a receiver that would work with all the inputs I have for viewing... Apple, Amazon (FireStick 4k), BluRay, LG TV ARC, CD, AirPlay etc. While there are a few bad reviews, I'm counting on Crutchfield to aid in the process. [ S  Nov 26, 2018 ]
    Best that I could afford. [ Lissa  Nov 26, 2018 ]
    Top notch reviews [ Jason  Nov 26, 2018 ]
My Onkyo had problems from day one. Have read about a lot of issues with Onkyo so wanted to try a different brand. Denon had good reviews online. [ efrain  Nov 25, 2018 ]
We are upgrading in order to get 4K video. We chose this unit because it had pre-amp outs and video upscaling. Hoping the audio quality is solid! [ Sarah  Nov 25, 2018 ]
    used you before [ S  Nov 24, 2018 ]
HEOS, mutli channel, multi zone, 2 hdmi outputs [ Robert  Nov 23, 2018 ]
Through a couple conversations with your friendly staff this is the product I thought best fit my needs allowing for some potential growth opportunity. [ Cathy  Nov 23, 2018 ]
It seemed like a great price for a receiver that has plenty of power and all the features I'm looking for. Recently purchased a 4K TV for home theater, and current 8-year-old Onkyo receiver cannot handle 4K. I chose Denon over comparable new Onkyo products because of Denon's demonstrated commitment to Apple AirPlay2. I'm also replacing my current Apple TV with a 4K model to really begin enjoying some 4K content! [ Thomas  Nov 23, 2018 ]
Because it's Denon and the price was right. Most important though is the customer service I receive from Crutchfield. Can't get that from the BIg Box. [ george  Nov 23, 2018 ]
Now that my kids are older I want to get back to what I love. Listening to music and enjoying movies with an enhanced system. I look forward to purchasing 4 in wall speakers in 2019 as well as two surround sound & 1 sub woofer. I'm sure I will have to reach out to Crutchfield for assistance with set up over time. It was a no brainer buying from you compared to say Best Buy etc. Thank you Crutchfield! [ Timothy  Nov 22, 2018 ]
Excellent reviews and just what I needed to upgrade my home theater [ Lauren  Nov 21, 2018 ]
Good 7.1 AVR, when the price dropped, it was an easy decision. Full featured, will power the HT for years to come. [ KEVIN ANDREW  Nov 20, 2018 ]

Hope for clear sound from my RP Klipsch speakers. [ Wiliam  Nov 13, 2018 ]
I compared Onkyo and Sony to this Denon for price and features. I decided to go with the Denon based on the streaming features, 4K up-scaling, and watts per power. I look forward to getting it hooked up and running. [ ERNEST  Nov 12, 2018 ]

AVR out and 4 OHM capability. Should be enough to drive my Warfedale Diamond 240. Eventually Im going dedicated AMP so this really fits the bill. [ daniel  Oct 01, 2018 ]
I was looking for a mid range av reciever and after alot of research went with the Denon due to bench test results. In a day when RMS Watts are exaggerated, Denon manages to produce good power output in comparison to other brands and about 4v on their preamps which is twice the amount of volts needed to add extra channels with an aditional amplifier. This will give me the ability to add channels in the future shall I need them. Now all I need is to buy some Klipsch speakers to go with this baby [ Gerald  Sep 29, 2018 ]
I HAVE ALLWAYS HEARD GREAT REVIEWS ON DENON AN YOUR SALES LADY WAS A GREAT HELP IN DESIDING WICH RECIEVER WOULD MEET MY NEEDS AN BY THE WAY HER NAME IS BROOKE SO KUDDOS TO HER OTHER THAN THAT I KNOW THAT I CAN DEPEND ON CRUTCHFIELD KNOLEGABLE THECS. Send me a catlog [ Patrick  Sep 24, 2018 ]
    pre-amp outs [ Peter  Sep 24, 2018 ]
After reading reviews about this receiver and having the same receiver since around 2005 i decided it was time to upgrade since mine was having problem. It was just a matter of watching for a sale since the MSRP was $999. Finally today the price was on sale for $599 which for all this offers is a steal compared to others at this price point. Can't really find it in store or anywhere much else online either. [ Logan  Sep 23, 2018 ]
    I really like Denon gear. [ Robert  Sep 21, 2018 ]

The price break made a huge difference, I don't think there is another receiver for this price that can come close to the quality and features. [ Bryan  Sep 04, 2018 ]
Zone 2 media sources can be HDMI. Line Out and HDMI out jacks are provided for Zone 2. I will be connecting either Line Out or HDMI out to a second receiver that drives Zone 2 stereo speakers in multiple rooms for whole house audio. I chose this receiver because Zone 2 sources are more restricted on lower end receivers (many don't support HDMI music sources). [ Robert  Aug 29, 2018 ]

It has a phone input which u can use for turntable input [ Hemanth  Nov 21, 2018 ]
No. You have to step up to the X3500 to get a turntable input and preamp. [ Steve  Nov 21, 2018 ]
There is no phono input, but I believe there is one on the 4400h. Another possibility is to use a separate phono preamplifier with the 3400h. [ Dave  Nov 21, 2018 ]
No it can't stream video at all that I'm aware of,it's for Spotify and other apps like that and updates [ Lora  Nov 14, 2018 ]
You can stream Audio received by the Denon unit via Ethernet. For video (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc.) you will want your TV to receive the video and pass the audio signal to your Denon. Most recent Samsung, LG and Viso TVs will do this. [ Mary Elizabeth  Nov 14, 2018 ]
If the output from your mic receiver is a compatible audio connection (RCA, optical, coax digital) you can connect it as a source input, sure. The Denon does not offer any balanced (XLR) connectivity and cannot "mix" multiple source inputs. [ Ryan  Nov 16, 2018 ]  Staff
    I have not done that yet... [ KESTER  Aug 30, 2018 ]
You can send an HDMI input (audio and video) to the monitor or TV1 or TV2 and your local speakers on zone 1; you may also send the audio on zone 2 to another amplifier for broadcast to other speakers. No video goes out on zone 2 or 3. [ Carl  Aug 29, 2018 ]

I currently only use 3 channels (Left, Right and Center) and 2 subs. But it is a 7.2 receiver so I can only assume it does. [ Francisco  Aug 08, 2018 ]
Yes. However, if the source is 5.1, you may not hear sound from all speakers. There are several options in setting up speakers. Do not get frustrated. It will take time to tweak it to your liking. I love the receiver. [ Ladd  Aug 08, 2018 ]

I know it supports HDR10 but I don't know if there is a new format of HDR. Hope it helps. [ Sergio  Jul 24, 2018 ]
Hello. The following information comes from a thread on AVSforum. I found it by putting your question into my search engine. "Denon 2014 X-Series Models (1100/2100/3100) Comparison Chart The X-Series is Denon's step-up model lineup, aimed more at higher end setups and installers. All models add superior Audyssey features, a third year of warranty, and several custom installer targeted features. The lowest two models (X1100W and X2100W) are basically X-Series versions of the S700W and S900W. They have identical build quality and internal components (amps, DAC's, etc) but step up the Audyssey to MultEQ XT with the other additions noted above (3rd year of warranty etc). The X3100W steps up to a slightly larger chassis, with more powerful amps and step-up features like independent Zone HDMI output, Audyssey DSX and DTS Neo:X for surround explansion alternatives to traditional 7.1.". Primarily price / features. Go to the Denon web site, click on "compare" then select the least expensive X model and the most expensive S model. You will find they are pretty close in price ($20 msrp) and specs but with some minor differences in features. From there, X models go up to $3999 msrp for a very sophisticated 13.2 powerhouse while the S goes down to a $229 msrp 5.2 basic receiver. Denon (parent company Sound United) just wants to make sure they have something for every buyer regardless of price point. All are manufactured in Vietnam except the top X models which are still made in Japan. [ James  Jul 15, 2018 ]
I don't believe in Alexa. Worst technology ever invented! [ Gary  Mar 18, 2018 ]
    I don't know [ Ronald  Mar 17, 2018 ]
I don't own an Alexa so haven't tried this with my 3400, but specs say Alexa can control volume, tracks and input selection. [ James  Mar 09, 2018 ]
Like most home theater receivers, the Denon AVR-X3400H does not offer dedicated outputs for recording devices. [ Ryan  Jan 26, 2018 ]  Staff
You will need a phono pre-amp to connect your turntable. Crutchfield has 60+ at all price ranges and features, and, of course, there are hundreds out on the internet. You'll probably want to do some research to make sure you don't over-buy for what you need. The 3400H has one complete set (all channels) of analog pre-outs that uses whatever input source you've selected for the "main" output. The "zone 2" pre-out (2 channel) can be independently set to any input source, including what you have selected for the "main", so that would seem to fulfill your need. [ James  Jan 14, 2018 ]
You will need a stand-alone phono preamp, which will have line-outs that you can connect to one of the Denon's analog stereo input channels for regular listening. You did not say what you are recording to, but I would not recommend pre-outs for this - you want line-outs, which I don't believe the Denon has. You could just connect the line-outs on the phono preamp directly to your recording device. [ Griff  Jan 14, 2018 ]
You can enable the Atmos effects even with non-Atmos encoded surround sound soundtracks, yes. You will need at least 1 pair of dedicated Atmos speakers (in-ceiling or up-firing) to produce the overhead Atmos effects. If you are referring to Amazon's voice control platform, Alexa, then you will be happy to hear that this can work with Alexa once you have installed the firmware update Denon has available. However, if you are referring to a different product like the Alexa Plus camera or another device, I recommend calling an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to discuss that product to see if it can work with this receiver. Use the surround back inputs for height channels. In the settings for your X3400, you will be able to change these inputs from surround back to height channels. [ Jeremy  Dec 08, 2017 ]
The configuration for the speakers can be set in the menu options (I think speaker set-up). Pretty sure there is a setting and picture on your display to select the height speakers. This is my 3rd and most advanced A/V component and they seem to get more and more complex to configure. [ ANDREW  Dec 08, 2017 ]
The AVR-3400 allows you to assign the "Surround Back" speaker connection to one of several options: 1) surround back; 2) front height; 3) top front; 4) top middle; 5) front Dolby Atmos; 6) surround Dolby Atmos; 7) bi-amped front speakers; 8) 2nd set of front speakers or 9) Zone 2 stereo. While this sounds like a lot of options, you only get to pick one - if you need more, you'll have to move up to a 9 or 11 channel model. [ James  Dec 08, 2017 ]
If you go through the onscreen setup it should show you where to plug everything in and check it is configured correctly. [ James  Dec 08, 2017 ]
Yes. The OSD/overlay will only be provided on the HDMI connection and works over all supported resolutions. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan [ Ryan  Oct 19, 2017 ]  Staff
