About the Denon Anniversary Edition DL-A110

A special Anniversary Edition cartridge

The Denon DL-A110 puts a modern touch on a legendary phono cartridge. It's an update of the legendary DL-103 phono cartridge that has been in constant production since 1964, using copper wire that is hand-spun in the Denon Audio Works Factory in Shirakawa, Japan. For the company's 110th anniversary, they mounted it on an exclusive Anniversary Edition silver-graphite headshell, and included a protective case and stylus cleaning brush.

For best results, we recommend using a phono preamp that's compatible with low-output moving coil cartridges.

Q
What type of stylist? Conical, Eliptical or line in?
[ PAUL CECIL  Jan 26, 2021 ]
1 answer
A
The stylus is described in the user guide specifications as a "0.2 mm square solid diamond" with a tip radius of "16.5 microns (0.65 mils)". It's unclear, as you might think this means 0.2mm x 16.5µm (7.87 mil x 0.65 mil). For contrast, AT's VM760SLC (line contact) is 1.5 x 0.28 mil and their VM740ML (MicroLine) is 2.2 mil x 0.12 mil (both carried by Crutchfield). Obviously the Denon doesn't have a 7.87 mil long stylus. The 0.2 mm square would be the dimension at the cantilever end of the stylus. The 0.65 mil radius applies to the opposite end (the tip, which rides in the record groove). Since only a single value for the tip is given, it seems sensible (if not disappointing) to infer a spherical shape. A several years old review of the DL-103 (the design on which the DL-110 is based) states it has a "0.5-mil spherical tip" but that a Shibata tip (DL-103S) is also available. A review of the DL-110 mentioned an elliptical alternative (DL-103D). I cannot account for that first review claiming 0.5 mil (vs the specified 0.65 mil for the stylus at hand, it could just be a typo), but the conclusion I draw is that the stylus tip is indeed spherical.
