Seriously disappointed

John from Clovis on 5/24/2023

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I bought this Denon RCD-N10 with high expectations . Setup wasn't too confusing , although entering my WiFi info was frustrating . The process is completed using the remote . There weren't any instructions CLEARLY explaining how to change from character s to symbols and vice versa . The first failure with the unit was that connecting my Android to it via Bluetooth to listen to Amazon music was horrible . It would connect and play music for about 5+- seconds , thenthevaudio would get all distorted and then just quit . My phone connects and plays Amazon music on other devices with no problems. I tried several times to connect Amazon to the unit , always with the same result . Second problem began about a week after setup . The sound quality suddenly changed , no matter how I adjusted the tone controls on the HEOS app , it just started sounding muffled , no matter the source . Crutchfield sent me another unit . The second unit was a trainwreck to set up , and it will not connect to my WiFi . ?? So done with this piece of junk .

Pros: None .

Cons: Don't take a chance on this paperweight , it's not worth the frustration .

Excellent sound in a compact receiver

Craig from South Burlington, VT on 11/2/2022

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Overall, this receiver is excellent where it matters - the sound. I have my Paradigm Premier 100B speakers (a previous Crutchfield purchase) connected to it - and they sound spectacular through the Denon, better than ever before. The features are very good as well, and the HEOS app is well done, versatile, and mostly easy to use. This unit replaces a Pioneer SXS30 I had gotten as a refurb unit, and had many problems with (mostly slow performance). The sound is superior from this Denon, as compared to the Pioneer. I gave it 4 stars due to a couple very glaring issues, at least to me. First, the speaker connections --> no banana plug connection options. As McEnroe would say, you cannot be serious! This was nearly a showstopper for me. Still cannot believe they don't offer at least that option for a connection -- EVERYthing else I own for stereo equipment does. Connection by bare wire, only. Ridiculous. The other drawback was the HEOS setup -- the app installed on my android phone with ease and it automatically recognized the device. No issues there ... BUT, it still forced me to enter my HEOS userid and password on the unit (!) That was painful, really painful to do with the remote control (the only option as far as I saw). Those two flaws still leave a bad taste in my mouth - but the functionality and sound are very good, I have to admit.

I have to agree with Joe from Bend, OR. I bought one of these about 3 years ago and the sound has always been marginal. And it is getting worse. It sounds terrible. I think it is harmonic distortion. I am going to have to replace it with a different receiver. I don't think I would ever buy anything from Denon again.

Pros: Lots of connectivity

Cons: Terrible sound quality

I purchased this item to replace a 2001 Yamaha CRX E150 Natural Sound CD Receiver--which I loved but it was having skipping issues I couldn't fix. The Denon CEOL RCD-N10 is sleek and easy to set-up, but it has a much different sound than the Yamaha--which had the ability to perfectly replicate the feel of a 1983 Depeche Mode concert. At 55 watts, the Denon's sound is actually more "rich" and "full" than the 75-watt Yamaha, and it's better able to "separate" specific instruments, but it doesn't create that listening-to-vinyl ambiance. (I was able to improve the Denon's sound--at least to my ear--by using the audio functions to set treble at -4 and bass at +4). The Denon is brutally loud and can be paired with my phone to make me look passably relevant, but I would have preferred control knobs to the push buttons. (Knobs are easier to see and less likely to inexplicably fail.) All in all, I think I was much more content before The Clash broke up.

Makes sounds from many sources, albeit terribly

Joe from Bend, OR on 10/29/2021

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I'm confused. How any so-called audiophile "journalist," moderately-respected "reviewer," or hipster music "aficionado" blog post could ever even dare to state, "it's not audiophile quality, but it's pretty good!" must have their listening rights revoked for two years, minimum. I wanted to love this unit - look, I bought it. And within an hour, I am returning it. I have had an Onkyo CR N755 pumping through a pair of Alesis Studio One Mk II speakers for quite some time, and this is the basis of my comparison: the Onkyo with bass boost on, 0 bass eq, +3 on treble eq, and the Denon CEOL RCD-N10 through the same speakers with max bass, max treble (I tried everything!). I listen to all kinds of music. For my listening test, I used CDs (Lovebeat, Simon & G) and LPs (Baby Charles, Black Keys, Aquemini). My wife, who, prior to hooking up the Denon, said "whatever," asserting she would not be able to hear any difference anyway, immediately criticized the sound. Give. Me. A. Break. This thing sounds terrible. Anyone here who has given it more than 3 stars, which are based on cool features alone, needs to be charged an extra BS fee from Crutchfield. Bzzzt. Sorry, WRONG. If you want to hear some sounds, from lots of different sources, then spend the money on this unit and may you find joy. But if you enjoy feeling your music: physically, spiritually, emotionally, then seek that joy elsewhere. The Denon CEL RCD-N10 emits sounds, indeed. But that is all.

Pros: great input options, kinda cool package

Cons: sound quality, touch controls, no physical volume knob

Excellent little unit for your various musical listening & format needs. Vinyl sounds soft and luxurious through my Klipsch Reference Premier RP-160M speakers. I can play my vast CD collection & the various digital format options fulfill my mind-blowing musical quests for the perfect sound for a particular recording. Vinyl vs. Digital - Oh yea, this things ROCKS! What are you waiting for? I've totally geeked out on this fabulous Denon receiver! Not the most user friendly at first. If you're having problems it's likely user error like with me. But keep at it, it's worth the effort. Go online and read the manual. Rock on!

Pros: Every musical format delivered in a small package with a CD player. Excellent sound quality!

Cons: The WIFI was a little challenging to set up. Refer to the User Manual.

Very nice compact stereo system. Set up was easy, just following the prompts from the unit it was ready to go within a few minutes. Both internet radio and over the air reception work very well, CD playback does not disappoint. Works well with apple music and i Tunes. The system allows the user to fine tune the sound to better suit their ear. Paired with two Klipsch RP-160M speakers it fills the room with wonderful musical sound. A subwoofer out is offered but one is not needed for this setup. Over all very happy with our setup.

Pros: Very easy to set up, sounds good easy to u se.

Cons: I would have liked a copy of the manual to be included with the receiver.

reason for my low rating is that I was assured that this receiver can be used as a wireless source, via the local LAN and the HEOS app, for wireless speakers. Here is text from a Crutchfield advisor, received on 9/4/21: "Hi Martin. Sorry you're having issues with your Denon gear connecting. I checked with my supervisor, and you should be able to use the receiver wirelessly with the 350 speakers as part of the HEOS network and use the receiver as your source. Please give our Tech Support team a call at 800-955-9094 with your order #49525161 handy, and they should be able to help you with this." Well. I could not figure our how this could work, and an hour on the phone with Crutchfield tech support, working through the entire setup in detail, did not help either. The app offers wired connection only as a source, no matter what, and unless and until somebody tells me how this can be done, I consider myself mislead by Crutchfield.

Big improvement over my bookshelf stereo

David from Columbia, MD on 8/27/2021

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I've had this for a few months, and I'm still figuring it out. The on-line user guide is voluminous, but not very helpful. The AM and FM tuners are not very good at all. Reception is poor. However, they're not needed because the RCD-N210 has internet radio -- something new to me other than my experience on a PC. Initially I found it impossible to find internet radio stations using the remote control. I discovered that it needs to be set up using the HEOS app on my cell phone. Now I'm able to select internet radio stations using the remote. However, the characters on the display are small and you must be within 5 feet or so to be able to read it. If you keep your cell phone next to you, you'll be fine. The CD player seems to work fine; I've used it only once. The analog input works well with no apparent delay when watching TV.

Pros: Internet radio Sound quality

Cons: AM and FM tuner reception Small display

I'm very happy with my Denon CEOL. It does exactly what it says, and what I needed it for, which is, playing my CD collection and playing my online library. It sounds great through my Klipsch R-51M speakers. I have to add that the first one I received was impossible to set up, even with Crutchfield's excellent Tech Support (kudos to Nolan). In any case, replacement was a snap, and the second unit I received was very easy to set up and get connected, even without tech support. Guess I just got a bad one the first time. In any case, this is why I like to buy from Crutchfield. They have excellent Tech Support, and if that doesn't work, they stand behind their product 100%

Great CD and amplifier section with the added bonus of being a HEOS streamer that can double as a small home theater device for our Lake Cottage. AND it is a truly beautiful device! Only two downsides and neither affected the FIVE STARS. 1) the remote is a typical big starship console of plastic. add a light!? 2) binding posts.. The Marantz version has them and the cost cannot be that much per unit. OVERALL, well worth the wait. Works flawlessly, sounds great, looks stunning and clean.

Airplay connects fast and works well. Radio streaming through TuneIn works smoothly without interruptions. Didn't explore other features yet. I also liked the connection system for speakers, no need of accessories (banana terminals, etc.) the peeled copper wires are the best. Delivery was super fast to MA! Thank you. Best regards

Buy an AVR instead.

Crutchfield customer from Noblesville, IN on 6/2/2021

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

It's only so-so. It looks nice, but I want to hide it in a cabinet. For the money, you are better off getting a low-grade AVR and just not using the other 5 amplifiers if you are going for 2-channel stereo. I had my old 3312 in this room and the 2-channel stereo was incredible, but I now have another need for my 3312 and so I bought this. With this, the sound is boxy. There is no HDMI and so your TV sound is via an optical cable. The worst part is you cannot control sound with your TV. This is apparently a limitation with optical versus HDMI. I tried the volume/mute/on-off links with my Samsung Frame remote to get the CEOL to work but it doesn't work! Seriously, if you can't IR with Samsung and LG, don't advertise it. Are there any other TVs worthwhile? So now I have to use two remotes or rely on the HEOS app to raise and lower the volume when I mute commercials on TV.

Pros: Small, looks nice

Cons: No HDMI, Can't use Samsung TV remote to control volume, can't hide behind cabinet and must use two remotes with TV.

No more bluetooth soundbar

Crutchfield customer from Portland, ME on 4/14/2021

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

After my wife and I moved and downsized, eventually the bluetooth soundbar was no longer cutting it for me, but my 70's sound system (Marantz, Advent loudspeakers) was too big for the main space (so, I've set that up in a finished basement room). I had some Bose 301 "bookshelf" speakers sitting unused and have been thinking about a mini/compact/smaller receiver unit for over a year and putting that in our main family space upstairs. After I signed up for Apple Music and a reason to have an Airplay capable reciever, this unit just checked all the boxes for me ... - Fits on a small shelf - Airplay/bluetooth - bonus CD tray (my wife voiced 'wanting to just play a cd', though I think this won't be used as much) - RCA jack It also supports optical connection if you want to hook to a TV (I don't), but I do have an old Slim Devices Squeezebox player using that connection). With built in WiFi, the unit also automatically found my home 'music server' setup and I can pull songs from that source. The feet on the unit need about 9.5" for solid footing, so this fits perfect on my open back shelf - would be tighter on a closed back, especially if using the bulky optical cable connector. And the sound is great again here - the 65 watt drives the Bose bookshelf speakers just great, with more room filling sound than I can crank it to here. And is sure does beat the soundbar.

Pros: Compact size Wireless connectivity+ options Supports Apple Airplay 65 Watt sounds great CD Tray

Cons: Bass + treble controller options only (not a big deal for me - great sound)

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I have now had the CEOL RCD-N10 for some time, I bought it because they sold out of Denon D-M41 ( I purchased at the time from another online retailer before I knew about Crutchfield). I needed something different for the space I wanted the new unit in, it has the USB, and the HEOS which I wanted to get to my NAS to play my whole music collection. The D-M41 is in my office with my computer and I stream my whole selection from the NAS via bluetooth. Where I wanted the CEOL RCD-N10 is no where near a PC and I didn't want to use a phone or a tablet. So this was absolutely perfect I added a pair of Klipsche book case speakers and it sounds amazing. I also bought earlier a Denon DRA-800H receiver for the main floor of the house and I have to say the CEOL RCD-N10 sounds just as good as the Denon DRA-800H. My family is pleased with the units. I'm not an expert but all my purchases have been the right choice for me and I based my choices on the comments here.

Pros: Streaming made easy, access to NAS , no drops, USB

Cons: None

The unit is compact and handsome. Unfortunately, I had trouble setting it up from the beginning, even simply connecting it to WIFI. I found the controls totally unintuitive; whether that's the fault of the unit or the fact that it was my first new receiver in 30 years I can't say. Ultimately I returned it in exasperation: it was simply too difficult to figure out how to do the simplest things. Younger or more experienced audiophiles may have no problems with this unit, but for me it was a trial for the 48 hours it was in my home. I was glad to ship it back.

Denon Quality With a Small Footprint; No Paper Owners Manual

Ralph from GARDEN VALLEY on 8/7/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

Purchased this Denon for its small footprint and included CD player, because the compartments in our new entertainment unit are only 15.5" wide, and this used only one slot for two components. I have owned two 17"-wide Denon receivers over the past 30 years which have both performed well. Received this Denon from Crutchfield 2 days after order. Connected older 6 ohm passive subwoofer/satellite speakers wired in parallel, but got "stuttered" sound with "hiccups" regardless of input source. Researched issue online, and tried rewiring passive subwoofer/satellite speakers in series. This solved the problem. I learned that wiring the passive subwoofers in parallel to the satellites cut the ohms in half, from 6 ohms to 3 ohms. This receiver's range is 4-16 ohms. Rewiring the passive subwoofer/satellite speakers in series doubled the ohms to 12, which enabled this receiver to produce not only "clean" sound, but the high-quality, full sound I have come to expect from Denon. I hope this helps someone who might make the same mistake I did. One star deducted because my box contained no paper owner's manual, just a Quick Start Guide and marketing materials. I was able to locate and download a copy of the full owner's manual online, but I prefer to receive a paper copy in the box. I highly recommend the Denon CEOL RCD-N10 to anyone who needs a quality receiver/CD player with a small footprint.

Cons: not fun to find hidden features due to sparse operating instructions.

I was looking for a reputable brand for a streaming amp and the Denon came through. I was not looking for one with a CD player or radio receiver, but nice to have when the time arises. I already owned two HEOS Bluetooth speakers and a home theater receiver from Denon so the CEOL-RCD-N10 complements the ecosystem. Setup was a bit archaic as I had to input my WiFi address through the supplied remote by using the arrow buttons.

Pros: Small footprint Clean design Immediate connection via Airplay2 and Bluetooth Great sound quality

Denon CEOL RCD-N10

Great sound except for Internet Radio which is not Denon's fault. I've had the SVS soundbase and indeed it is louder but what good is it if it can't be used.

Pros: Relatively easy to use.

Cons: I'm looking some

Non-functioning

The CD player never worked, out of the box. The Bluetooth streaming has issues, it cuts out for a few seconds fairly regularly. The connections in the back for speaker wire are unnecessarily difficult. This was a recommendation from the sales staff.

Pros: none

Cons: CD not working, problems with Bluetooth streaming, the jacks for speaker wire connection are awful.

Really easy to set up (especially connecting to wifi, that can always be dicey), messages on the screen are simple and make sense. Easy to connect to bluetooth, or internet radio. Like Denon has always been: simple, high quality.

3rd One a Charm, but Not Charming Enough

Cynthia from JOPLIN, MO on 10/16/2019

I purchased a Denon CEOL RCD-N10, and the first two units I was sent had quality control issues and wouldn't play CD's. The first one I ordered was Open Box, but the second they sent was brand new. The customer service reps were great about getting replacement units out, and for the third (new) unit they had someone test it to make sure it would work before shipping. After listening to the non-broken unit for a couple of days I decided that for the money, wattage, QC issues, and only a 1 year warranty that I didn't trust a Denon all-in-one and wanted something different. I contacted customer service and spoke at length with Allison, who made some great recommendations. I purchased different equipment - a Denon AVX2500H receiver and Martin Logan bookshelf speakers on closeout- all at excellent prices and love Crutchfield because their reps are so knowledgeable and they stand behind the products they sell.

Pros: Space-saving unit Multi-function

Cons: Quality Control Short warranty period for the price Power leaves a lot to be desired, but sound is okay if you're not an audiophile

Problems with Optical Audio Hurt Rating

Eric from Alexandria, VA on 9/11/2019

The issues are with the Denon, not with Crutchfield. The sound quality, streaming, and physical design are all first rate, but the optical audio input does not work *at all* with our 2014 Sony KDL-40W600B flatscreen. Denon support desk was *clueless* and offered zero help with the problem. Mike at Crutchfield was *much* more helpful and demonstrated a greatly deeper knowledge of the product and how to troubleshoot it. Still, the best he could do was to figure out a workaround (headphone jack of Sony to aux-in on the Denon). The Denon sounds great driving our Aperion speakers in a simple 2.1 setup. Great customer support is the reason I use Crutchfield, but no longer for Denon. Still considering returning the Denon as the workaround is less than optimal, and makes the interface much more clunky (no automatic "on," no master volume control).

Great Compact Option

Really happy with this unit so far, though I have not delved into any of the setup with the CEOL system. Streaming Apple Music from iTunes (or any iOS or macOS) device has been easy. Internet radio is easily accessible using remote; haven't bothered yet with using an app-based controller. Have TV hooked up through optical out. Considered the similar Marantz unit, but I like that the Denon is Airplay 2 compatible for a bit more future proofing. My only complaint thus far is that the speaker wire connection is not banana plug capable. This limits the wire gauge you can use, to some extent.

Poor customer support

I am pleased with the performance of the Denon receiver, but very displeased with their customer service. In addition to being very difficult to reach (extensive wait times) they do not understand their own product. I had set up difficulties; after long discussions and multiple trials to make the system work, Denon advised me to return the product to you (Crutchfield) and obtain a replacement product. I was not confident in their knowledge of their own product, so I called Crutchfield technical support. Your technicians were able to help me resolve the issue.
