Our take on the AKG N60NC Wireless

I feel comfortable recommending the AKG N60NC Wireless headphones, "sight unseen." I haven't gotten my hands on these 'phones yet, but I have tried the wired version. They were among the best on-ear noise-canceling headphones I've ever tested.

Wireless on-ear noise-cancellers with a sound rep

I feel comfortable recommending the AKG N60NC Wireless headphones, "sight unseen." I haven't gotten my hands on these 'phones yet, but I have tried the wired version. They were among the best on-ear noise-canceling headphones I've ever tested.

I found the wired version to be light and comfortable with a rich, mids-focused sound and super-effective active noise-cancellation. Here, AKG promises those excellent attributes and also gives you built-in Bluetooth — so you can play music wirelessly from your phone.

Designed for travel — but works well anywhere

These lightweight 'phones are ultra-portable, thanks to their on-ear design and swiveling ear cups. The unique 3D-Axis folding mechanism makes for a relaxed fit, and allows you to fold the headphones flat for easy storage. They are a slam-dunk choice for travel, but I could also see grabbing them for the commute to work — and using them when you get to the office.

Likewise, AKG's noise-canceling circuitry is tailored toward air travel. The noise cancellation is powerful enough to neutralize the droning sound of a plane's engine. But I've found it does a good job minimizing loud conversation and office HVAC units, too.

AKG's studio sound profile

AKG headphones and mics are staples in professional recording studios. So their gear is always tuned to sound detailed and balanced across all frequencies. AKG has gone to great lengths to preserve that sound over Bluetooth. The N60NC Wireless headphones boast the same memorable midrange and deep, punchy bass that makes AKG so popular here at Crutchfield.

15 hours of battery life, and a wired listening option

On a fully charged battery, these headphones offer up to 15 hours of wireless use with noise-canceling operation. If you use the included cable, you can listen wired for up to 30 hours with noise cancellation. That's plenty of time for most plane or train trips while you watch movies, binge shows, listen to tunes — or just zone out in silence.

You can also listen in passive mode without noise cancellation — saving some battery life.

A great all-around set of headphones

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are easily the nicest headphones I've ever owned. The sound is crisp and clean, without favoring the high or low ends of the spectrum. If you like a lot of bass, these may not be the headphones of your dreams. But if, like me, you prefer more of a 'reference' sound, these will not disappoint you. These headphones are very solidly built and the included accessories are of matching quality. The headband is a single piece with an adjuster slide at each end, near the ear cups, which fold around inside the headband for flat storage in the included neoprene bag. Besides the bag, the kit also includes an airplane adapter as well as an audio cable for wired use and a micro-USB cable for charging. The two cables are constructed with a fabric sheathing which seems very durable and more upscale than the usual plastic. The audio cable includes a phone/playback control button. Just putting these on reduces much of the ambient noise, even without the active noise cancellation. With the noise cancellation turned on, almost everything vanishes. I have a very loud computer keyboard (and I'm a pretty heavy-handed typist) and I can barely hear it when typing. I have not had a chance to try them on board an airplane yet, but I'm quite certain that they will eliminate most, if not all, of the noise. They are a bit tight, but I wore them for a couple of hours comfortably thanks to the thick earpads. The headband padding isn't terribly thick but so far I have not found it to be uncom

Pros: Very high build quality Can connect with included wire or via Bluetooth Good, clean, balanced sound Excellent noise cancellation

Cons: Headphones are on the heavy side They fit tight to the ears (may not actually be a bad thing) Headband padding is not terribly thick Not for you if you like a lot of bass

Good sound and noise canceling

Bob from Palm Springs, CA on 2/20/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is very good and on par with my Bose wired NC headphones. The comfort is fair; the ears get warm rather quickly. As others have commented, the controls are a bit non-intuitive, but easy enough to learn. A clearer visual or aural clue would be helpful for knowing when to recharge. However, the battery life appears to excellent.

Pros: Sound quality Noise cancellation

Cons: Controls Lack of cue for recharging

They worked great! Great noise blocking and sound. Can't wait to take them to work to cancel out a co-worker who talks to himself all day.

Sleek design and high quality sound

Bob from Harrisonburg, VA on 9/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cool looking and nice alternative to the higher priced models. Shield quality is very good and I especially like that you can use them with a cord or with bluetooth. I use them mostly with the cord and am impressed with both the sound quality and the level of noise reduction. It made my recent trip to Europe a far more comfortable journey.

Pros: design, sound quality, comfort

Cons: Bluetooth controls are difficult to use

Don't travel without them!

Greg from Frisco, TX on 9/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I gave my son my older pair of AKG N60NC headphone and got the new model for me. The noise canceling in my older ones was just ok, but these new N60s are greatly improved and the carrying case is prefect for my weekly travel on airplanes. I now use the wireless Bluetooth for all of my cell phone calls because the microphone works better than the one in my iPhone 6S. My previous AKG pair are still like new after 3 years of very heavy travel so It was a no brainer to get another pair of the same and hand my old ones down to my son.

Product Research

Overview: The AKG N60 NC Wireless noise-canceling headphones are designed for travelers who want to hear their music, and only their music, and enjoy wireless convenience as well. With Active Noise Canceling technology, the distracting noise you encounter, from other travelers talking to the drone of airline engines, simply disappears. The headphones come with an audio cable with in-line remote (when you can't or don't want to go wireless), a USB charging cable, and an airline adapter for plugging into on-board entertainment. The N60 NC Wireless features a unique folding design for storage in the included compact padded pouch.

Bluetooth 4.0: The N60 NC Wireless headphones are equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 technology to give you wireless access to all of your music, and allow you to make and receive calls on your mobile device wirelessly. With aptX and AAC, you can experience high quality lossless audio while streaming from your devices. The headphones support A2DP (v12), AVRCP (v14), HFP (v16), and HSP (v12) profiles.

Active Noise Canceling: The N60 NC Wireless features high-performance, active noise-canceling technology to reduce ambient noise and create a quiet environment inside the headphones. This active circuit picks up ambient noise, reverses its polarity, and re-introduces the noise into the headphones to cancel out the external distractions. You can turn the ANC circuit on or off as needed, using the slide switch on the back of the right ear cup.

Rechargeable Battery: The Active Noise Cancellation circuit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Polymer rechargeable battery (3.7V, 610mAh) in the left ear cup. An LED inside the switch indicates the circuit is turned on, and lets you know when the battery needs charging. The battery charges while the included USB charging cable is plugged into a 5V USB power port. A fully charged battery provides approximately 15 hours of playback with both Bluetooth and Active Noise Cancellation, and up to 30 hours of playback with only ANC turned on. You can listen to the headphones in passive mode using the audio cable at any time, even if the battery is exhausted.

Construction: The headphones are made of premium materials, such as aluminum, memory foam, and leather. The padded ear cups rest comfortably on your ears, while the closed back design keeps out much of the external noise.

Cable: The N60 NC Wireless comes with a 51" detachable straight audio cable for connecting to your music source. The cable terminates into a narrow straight 3.5mm stereo mini-plug. The cable has a universal, in-line 1-button remote/microphone that is compatible with most smartphones. The button allows you to answer/hang up your phone calls, as well as play/pause your music, and skip to the next track. The remote does not have volume control, however you can raise and lower the volume on the headset when in wireless mode.

Folding Design: The headphones' unique 3D Axis folding mechanism allows you to fold them flat for storage or to pack in a suitcase or briefcase. The N60 NC Wireless comes with a padded neoprene storage pouch with a zippered closure.

Why did you buy this?

Excellent sound quality and comfortable to wear for extended periods [ Chris  May 29, 2018 ]
An online review of the best noise cancelling headphones (Sound Guys, 3 Nov 2017) indicated that these AKG headphones have decent sound quality and excellent battery life -- 15 hours on Bluetooth and 30 hours in wired mode. [ Chris  Mar 07, 2018 ]
I have the AGK N60 NC wired version and love the noise cancelling capabilities. Long car trips are less stressful when I cancel out the road noise. [ Curt  Nov 27, 2017 ]
this will be my 2nd pair of AKG headphone. Got these for my son. [ Greg  Aug 11, 2017 ]
My Sony wireless headphones blew out its "flip-flop" and I wanted to step up into higher fidelity. Liked the specs and light weight of the AKG's. Ready to put to use daily in the office, walking trail and occasional plane trip. [ G  Aug 09, 2017 ]

1 question already asked

Unfortunately noise cancellation can't be disabled in wireless mode, but you can turn it on or off when using the headphones wired. [ John  Jul 07, 2017 ]
Active noise cancellation is always on when using Bluetooth. There is no Bluetooth without it. When using a wired connection it can be turned off using the same that is used for Bluetooth. Slide it to the off position. The headphones will still work as wired headphones, but without ANC. [ Ron  Jul 07, 2017 ]
