About the Toshiba 34HF85

The 34" 34HF85 stands ready to deliver crisp, clear, punchy images from a variety of video sources. This sleek model has a totally flat widescreen picture tube. It's designed for optimum viewing of DVDs and high-definition TV (HDTV reception requires connecting a separate HDTV tuner). All your standard video sources will look terrific, too — you can choose between a regular 4:3 image with dark "pillars" on the sides, or several viewing modes that expand the image to fill the screen.

All your standard video sources will look terrific, too — you can choose between a regular 4:3 image with dark "pillars" on the sides, or several viewing modes that expand the image to fill the screen.

Conventional video sources (like antenna, cable, VCR, etc.) are upconverted to 1080i by Toshiba's digital video processing circuitry. Of course, you won't see the depth and dimensionality of true 1080i HDTV programs, but you will enjoy a cleaner, more natural image. To maximize the smoother look of progressive-scan video sources (like a progressive-scan DVD player), you can choose 540p instead of 1080i via the on-screen menu. The result is an effortlessly filmlike image.

The 34HF85 has 6 A/V inputs, including two HD-compatible component video inputs, plus a HDMI digital audio/video input — ideal for connecting an "upconverting" DVD player. You'll also find two sets of rear A/V inputs and a set of front A/V inputs (all with S-video) for easy connection with a camcorder, VCR or video game console.

Consumer Alert: This component has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009, to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the Nation's transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products. Features

HDTV Monitor: Two ColorStream HD high-resolution component video inputs and an HDMI jack allow you to connect an optional HDTV receiver or source. These inputs are capable of receiving 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

FST PURE Flat Picture Tube: This "purely flat" tube delivers increased viewing angle along with the enhanced picture linearity necessary to produce accurate life-like images. Additionally, unwanted reflections from room lighting are eliminated, compared to conventional tube designs. Finally, sharpness and brightness are both significantly improved. The result is the sharpest, brightest and most lifelike pictures ever produced by a Toshiba television.

Invar Shadow Mask: Most picture tubes use standard shadow masks made of steel, which can expand under intense heat. Expansion of the shadow mask causes picture discoloration, often called "doming." But Invar shadow masks are made of a compound of iron and nickel, rendering them extremely heat-resistant. This high thermal tolerance eliminates doming and allows the tube to operate at a higher voltage, producing brighter whites, higher contrast, and purer colors.

Dynamic Quadruple Focus: While most CRTs can create a fairly precise, round beam spot in the center of the picture, many create a less precise elliptical beam spot at the edges and corners. Dynamic Quadruple Focus utilizes both horizontal and vertical beam adjustment to ensure that even the edges and corners have a precise beam spot for a sharp, uniform picture from corner to corner.

CrystalScan HDSC with 3-2 Pulldown Processing (upconverts NTSC sources to 1080i): Conventional interlaced signals (like antenna, cable, VCR, etc.) are upconverted to 1080i by Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC circuitry. For progressive-scan video sources (like a progressive-scan DVD player), you can choose 540p instead of 1080i via the on-screen menu. The result is an effortlessly filmlike image.

4MB, 10-bit 3D Digital Comb Filter with Vertical Contour Correction: This advanced filter analyzes sequential fields of information to eliminate dot crawl and color bleed. Additionally, the filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. Most video noise normally seen in RF and composite video signals is eliminated.

CableClear DNR+: Designed to optimize poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, this noise reduction system eliminates video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. This system detects the quality of the incoming video signal, and automatically applies the needed amount of video optimization.

DFine Adjustable Hi-Speed Velocity Scan Modulation: Velocity Scan Modulation adjusts the CRT scanning speed to create sharp, well defined edges. The DFine feature increases the scanning speed for even greater detail. You can select between High, Low and Off.

Wide Band Video Amplifier: As standard video amplifiers increase the gain of the video signal, video bandwidth tends to decrease. This eliminates the higher frequencies, reducing resolution. A wide-band video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution.

Favorite Channels: This feature allows you to store 12 of your favorite channels for easy tuning.

Picture Size: When viewing a 480i or 480p signal source, you can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • Natural: image is displayed close to its originally formatted proportion
  • Theater Wide 1: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the center of the picture remains close to its true proportion, but the left and right edges are stretched wider to fill the screen
  • Theater Wide 2: entire picture is uniformly enlarged (scrolling to view hidden portions of the picture is available)
  • Theater Wide 3: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the picture is stretched wider to fill the width of the screen and stretched slightly taller (scrolling to view hidden portions of the picture is available)
  • Full: This mode is mainly designed for 16:9 programs. When a 16:9 program is received, the picture is stretched taller to fill the screen without distorting the main portion of the image. If a 4:3 program is sensed, the picture is stretched wider to fill the screen, but not taller. In each case, none of the picture is hidden.

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes:

  • Sports: bright and dynamic picture
  • Standard: standard picture setting
  • Movie: movie-like picture setting
  • Preference: allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, color, tint, sharpness, and color temperature

Stable Sound: When the signal source is changed, this feature limits the highest volume level to prevent extreme changes in volume.

BBE Sound: By correcting the phase delay and distortion naturally generated by speaker systems, the BBE sound feature ensures that the sound that reaches your ears is as natural as the original sound. Human voices are clearer and music is natural and well-defined.

On/Off Timer: The on timer switches the television on at a specified time. You can choose the channel and adjust the on time, plus select a timer frequency of Once or Daily. The off timer turns the television off automatically at a specified time once or every day.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be adjusted from 10 minutes to 2 hours in 10-minute increments.

GameTimer: With the GameTimer feature, you can automatically activate the Video Lock feature to set a limit for playing a video game. The GameTimer can be set to 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Auto Power Off: The TV will automatically turn itself off after approximately 15 minutes if it is tuned to a vacant channel or a station that has stopped broadcasting on that channel. This feature does not work in the Video Mode.

Labeling Channels: Channel labels appear above the on-screen channel number display each time you turn on the TV, change a channel, or press Recall. You can choose any four characters to identify a channel.

Labeling Video Inputs: You can assign a preset name for each video input source. You can select from VCR, DVD, DTV, SAT, and CBL, or use the default label name.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including cable boxes, satellite receivers, VCRs, TV/VCR combos, DVD players, portable DVD players, DVD/VCR combos, and "home theater in a box" systems. The remote has glow-in-the-dark buttons.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI Input: This input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks and an HDMI jack. This input can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jack is compliant with the EIA/CEA-861/861B standard and is not intended for use with personal computers. You can connect a DVI device to the TV with an HDMI-DVI adapter cable and stereo audio cables.

Note: The HDMI jack will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

ColorStream HD High-resolution Component Video Inputs: The component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

Front Panel Inputs: The TV is equipped with a front panel input which includes audio and composite and S-Video inputs. This input allows you to conveniently plug in a camcorder or a game console. If the camcorder has a mono audio output, you can plug the audio cable into the "L/Mono" input.

A/V Output: The rear panel A/V output features a composite video jack and a variable stereo audio output for connecting to an external amplifier. You must first turn off the TV's built-in speakers before audio is output. The variable output allows you to adjust the audio level using the TV's remote control.
