I have been waiting for the price of this lens to drop for a long time. This is a solid lens, fast AF, and sharp.

Nikkor AF-S Micro 105mm f/2.8G lense

Really an amazing lens. Heavy but well worth it. A transition coming from zoom lenses these last 10 plus years. Used to use prime lenses with film, but got away from it with digital - now nice to go back to prime lenses with a full from camera. Had forgotten what I had given up. Clarity/sharpness is great - color as well. So far have done some minor macro work and taken photos of grandkids - you can simple tell the difference from other lenses. I have always liked the 105mm better than 85mm - but this seems to be a personal preference. I prefer this model since it does do Macro unlike the 85mm. The broken is very good.
Pros: Very sharp, great colors. Great middle range lens.
Cons: maybe the weight, but you get used to it quickly - at least it feels like you are holding something. Getting accustomed to it right now, but does tend to search something on focus. Can't really fins anything that make me regret the purchase - not a "cons" but rather a "Pros".

Interesting Lens
Sensu from Alaska on 6/7/2015
Still learning this 105mm MICRO lens so unable to be definitive. However, about a year ago Rusty recommended an AWESOME Nikkor 40mm MICRO. It is so good that I have used it exclusively ever since! Crisp closeups and stunningly clear long distance. I mention this because in my effort to REALLY see and understand the plant species I am interested in, I decided to try this 105mm MICRO. It IS a keeper. Captures the details I want. Will probably end up using it for focus stacking next winter.
Pros: As I said, am still learning the lens. The detail it provides is worth every costly penny!
Cons: Remember, this is all subjective: This lens is heavy. If you do not personally have strong shoulders and three legs or something to brace against - USE a STRONG anchoring Tripod when in the field if there is ANY wind. If you shoot from a vehicle - turn off the engine, take a deep breath and hold that position as you press camera firmly to your face or glasses (get a pair that will not distort from constant use).

Get Closer!
Paul from Brentwood, TN on 4/18/2014
Great lens for portraits and even better for macro. Who can't resist spring flowers now and then or a close-up of a puppy's face? It's a fast lens at 2.8 so it is great for low-light situations and for taking macro shots in low light without a special flash. It's really great to move in close without special lighting for macro. And there's VR to boot. I really like it.
Pros: well-built, versatile, fast
Cons: pricey but worth it
