Nikon D3400 Two Lens Kit
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
So far, so good. Just learning to use the camera. Check back in a month.
"You did NOT take that picture." I heard this constantly after I bought my first Nikon DSLR. I was a smartphone shooter tired of missing great photos because my phone couldn't keep up. If that sounds like you, the Nikon D3400 is going to be right up your alley. This compact yet powerful camera accurately captures the lighting, colors, and scenes that inspire you to take a photo in the first place, letting you explore your potential and express your creative vision.
It's likely you'll impress yourself and others with what you can do with the D3400 right out of the box, but with regular practice you'll grow as a photographer by leaps and bounds. Auto mode lets you put Nikon's nearly 100 years of collective knowledge to good use for effortlessly great results. Guide mode teaches you how to get a little more hands-on with step-by-step instructions right in the camera, while Aperture and Shutter Priority modes let you test the waters before you take the plunge into full-on Manual mode.
After about three months with my Nikon, I was doing things I never thought I could. With the addition of an inexpensive tripod and wireless remote control, I was capturing starry night scenes that wowed friends and family, including a few long-time photographers. There's almost no limit to what you can do with an entry-level DSLR like the D3400.
By far the best thing about smartphone photography is the ability to share your memories in an instant. Nikon makes it easy to share gorgeous high-resolution photos taken with the D3400 right from your phone. SnapBridge technology with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) lets you transfer your shots instantly to your compatible mobile device for quick, convenient sharing.
Nikon picked the perfect starter lenses to go with this capable camera. The 18-55mm lens gives you the flexibility to shoot expressive portraits with dreamy blurred backgrounds, sweeping landscapes with the entire scene in focus, and everything in between. Built-in vibration reduction minimizes image blur and camera shake when shooting stills or video in low light without a tripod. The 70-300mm lens picks up where the first lens leaves off, giving you the extra reach to capture distant action. Both lenses include built-in pulse motors for lightning-fast, whisper-quiet autofocus — great for shooting smooth video sequences.
Experiment with both lenses for portraits and close-ups, and you'll find that each focal length gives your photos a distinctive look and feel.
My daughter loves it! Lane helped, Crutchfield customer service top notch as always. Best deal out there, along with the free shipping. Arrived one day before my daughter's birthday as promised!

Very nice camera, the Wife loves it!!
I purchased this as a gift for my SO, who is a photographer with specializations in wildlife, nature, and product subjects. My goal was to find a suitable entry-level professional body, an everyday/portrait lens, and either a macro or telephoto zoom lens. Bryce, who helped me choose a kit, was incredibly patient and helpful. I learned some basic terminology in the purchasing process and now feel substantially more comfortable in shopping for photography equipment going forward.
My daughter loves it! Lane helped, Crutchfield customer service top notch as always. Best deal out there, along with the free shipping. Arrived one day before my daughter's birthday as promised!

It's been years since I've had a 'real' camera. I finally got tired of trying to take pictures with my phone camera. I love this camera!

Amazing camera package for the price. Still learning how it all works but I've expecting amazing pictures. Crutchfield as always was amazing with the quick delivery.
Pros: Can't beat the package for the price
Cons: No memory card included
A nice kit at a nice price to get started on photography (stepping up from phones and point and shoot cameras).
Pros: Versatile (2 lenses) Great price DSLR performance Kit from Crutchfield is very nice package
Cons: Not the full features of higher level DSLRs, but the D3400 still has good specs and takes great pictures.
Very nice camera for beginners.
Love the light camera body and the crisp clear pictures
Good DSLR camera for novice....
Great camera. Really like it.
Pros: Light weight, great photos, easy to use.
Cons: My old sb-22 flash wasn't compatible with the camera.
Bought this camera package for my daughter for Christmas! She loves it! Great picture quality, simple to use and send pictures directly to her phone, an awesome feature for social media sites! She uses it for her horse pictures and it is great! We are very happy with the camera... it does videos too! Great camera!
Pros: Great size, great zoom, many features ! Love this camera! So much to love about this camera!
Cons: Your best bet is to review pictures before loading to phone! The picture quality is amazing, but it does take awhile to download full resolution photos.
This camera is outstanding and that's what I was looking for I love it. Yes. I will recommend this camera.
Pros: Great quality
Excellent camera. Excellent service from Crutchfield. I appreciate their advice on the proper camera to purchase.
My son loves this camera! Easy to use and great pictures

Great camera for the money!
Support both from Nikon and Crutchfield has been excellent - having fun learning how to use it. Would highly recommend Crutchfield and their customer support.
Excellent camera at a great price!
Almost as awesome as Crutchfield the company!
Great starter camera!!!
Going from a 35mm camera to a hybrid and finally making the decision to buy a DSLR was the way to go. I found this bundle in the outlet store and was simply amazed at the price and all that was offered. This is a great camera that is feature rich suited for the beginner or seasoned camera buff. Great camera, great deal, thanks Crutchfield!
Purchased as a gift for my son. Comes with two lenses, bag, SD card, a pair of UV filters and cleaning cloths. A quality product at the right price.
Absolutely love this camera. It's my very first Nikon and I'm still trying to figure it out, but it's pretty easy to use.
Really impressed with the quality of the pictures, far surpasses the phone camera. Snapbridge works pretty well to download pictures directly to your phone via Bluetooth. Camera is easy to use especially with the guide mode which tells you which settings to use for the type of photo you are taking. Crutchfield also had the same price as another retailer but came with many more extras. Received the order very quickly.
Pros: Easy to use, multiple lenses, Bluetooth, great pictures.
Cons: None so far.
How can you go wrong with such a complete camera outfit? Easy to use and a great value from what I have found. Customer service is outstanding.
Pros: Value, ease of use. Actually arrived a day earlier than scheduled.
Cons: You have got to be kidding
The Nikon D3400 provides great photos and the two lens kit is an exceptional value.
Pros: Camera is lightweight and easy to hold even with a zoom lens attached.
Cons: For transferring image to a computer, the D3400 uses a proprietary Nikon USB cord which is not included but it can be purchased online. The camera also has Bluetooth for transferring images to a smartphone by using Nikon's SnapBridge app.
I am not a professional photographer, but I like to take good pictures. Sometimes I like for the camera to do all the work and other times I like to set up the shot a little more for some special effects or time lapse. The Nikon D3400 allows me to do both. I like the two lens that come with the D3400 body, they do everything that I need, even some nice close-up product photos for our on-line store. I have tried other cameras in the past, my favorite SLR being the Canon AE-1P. But needing to move to the DSLR world my first was a Canon and I was disappointed; I was given a Kodak (not a DSLR) to try and gave it back; I even had an Olympus DSLR but never really got the quality of pictures that I expected. So far the D3400 does everything I need, it is light-weight and easy to carry around.
Pros: Lightweight, easy to use, takes great pictures, and has all the functions that I need! Plus great battery life.
Cons: Haven't found any yet.
This is a great camera. I have a Nikon D5100 that I got a couple of years ago and this D3400 does everything it does plus a couple of extras. The two lens kit cannot be beat and Crutchfield was the very best buy I could get. I highly recommend this product and Crutchfield!
Pros: Lightweight, takes great pictures, and has all the functions you would every need!
Cons: None that I can think of.
Excellent camera, arrived right as expected, and the zoom lens works like magic! Very good quality all around. No problem using the Bluetooth connection so far (I've read complaints but no issue here). My first DSLR (coming from a Canon travel zoom) and can't be happier!
Pros: Great value
Easy to use, great photo qualify. Exceeds my expectations.
Pros: affordable, easy to use, great picture quality.
This Nikon 3400 is the first digital slr camera I've owned. A huge step up from the point and shoot model I previously used. Great Nikon quality and loaded with features. I purchased this as part of a kit with a Nikon 70-300mm lens. This kit should should cover all my photo shooting needs for a long time. A great feature of the 3400 is the Nikon SnapBridge app for transferring pictures from the camera to your phone or other devices. With a little patience even a non-tech guy like me got it to work. Real nice feature!!!While this camera is considered entry level by critics it does what most amateurs need. Crutchfield also included a nice Nikon camera bag,uv filters and memory card to complete the package. Great purchase,great product and great company!!!
Pros: Great camera package loaded with features SnapBridge feature Light weight
Cons: Not through the lens metering like my old slr camera
What a great camera! This is my first SLR and I can't complain about anything. The pictures it produces are amazing! There's so much to learn but just using guide mode the pictures are so superior to any other camera I've ever used.
This is a great camera. Not only for the experienced photographer but for the novice as well. The D3400 takes great photos and is easy to learn all functions.
Great camera. I love the live view feature showing how changing settings impacts the image.

Overview: The Nikon D3400 Two Lens Kit includes the Nikon D3400 digital SLR camera body, the AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm, f/3.5-5.6G VR standard zoom lens, and the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED telephoto zoom lens. The kit also includes the EN-EL14a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery pack, and the MH-24 battery charger.
LCD Monitor: The Nikon D3400 has a 3" TFT LCD monitor featuring approximately 921,000 dots and adjustable brightness (-5 to +5). The large 3" LCD monitor can display shooting information such as shutter speed, aperture, and number of exposures remaining as well as the settings currently applied. You can choose from a classic information display or a graphic display.
Live View: The camera features Live View, which allows you to frame your photographs in the monitor instead of the viewfinder. When the Live View button is pressed, the mirror is raised and the view through the lens will be displayed in the monitor. The subject will no longer be visible in the viewfinder. The Live View display will show up to 13 items, including shooting, focus, and AF-area modes, along with other status indicators. You can opt to hide many of the indicators, or overlay a framing grid in the monitor.
Optical Viewfinder: The D3400 uses a fixed eye-level penta-mirror single-lens reflex viewfinder with a built-in diopter adjustment to set the viewfinder to your personal eyesight (with or without glasses). The viewfinder's coverage area is approximately 95% horizontal and vertical. During self-timer or remote control operation when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light may enter the eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured. To prevent this, you can use an optional eyepiece cap to cover the eyepiece.
Image Sensor: The D3400 features a 23.5mm x 15.6mm DX-format CMOS image sensor with a total pixel count of approximately 24.72 million pixels and an effective pixel count of approximately 24.2 million.
Recording Media: The camera records images on SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, including UHS-I compliant cards. Cards rated UHS Speed Class 3 or better are recommended for movie recording. No SD cards are included with the camera. The camera has no internal memory.
Still Image Formats: The D3400 records still images in JPEG and NEF (RAW) formats. You can choose from the following Image Quality and Image Size settings:
|Quality Option |
|Available Image Sizes||Description|
|NEF (Raw)||6000 x 4000||Raw data from the image sensor is saved directly to the memory card in the Nikon Electronic Format (NEF). Settings such as white balance and contrast can be adjusted in the camera or on a computer after shooting.|
|NEF (Raw) + JPEG Fine||6000 x 4000||Two images are recorded, one NEF image and one fine-quality JPEG image.|
|JPEG Fine |
6000 x 4000 |
M: 4496 x 3000
S: 2992 x 2000
|Fine image quality, suitable for enlargements or high-quality prints.|
|JPEG Normal |
|Normal image quality, suited to most applications|
|JPEG Basic |
|Basic image quality, suitable for pictures that will be distributed by e-mail or used in web pages.|
Movie Recording: The D3400 records 16:9 movies in Full HD and HD, in MOV file format with H.264/MPEG-4 advanced video coding. Linear PCM audio is recorded by the built-in monaural microphone. Movies can be recorded in the following frame sizes, image quality, and rates:
|Frame Size (pixels)||Frame Rate (fps)||Maximum Length|
|High Quality||Normal Quality|
|1920 x 1080||60p (NTSC)||10 min||20 min|
|30p (NTSC)||20 min||29 min 59 sec|
|1280 x 720||60p (NTSC)|
Focus Modes: You can choose from the following autofocus and manual focus modes:
AF Assist Illuminator: The built-in AF assist illuminator enables the camera to focus even when the subject is poorly lit. This feature will light automatically to assist the autofocus operation when the shutter release button is pressed halfway. It has an operating range of 1'-8" to 9'-10". The length of some telephoto or zoom lenses may block the illuminator's light, making the feature ineffective or unavailable.
AF-Area Modes: The D3400 offers a choice of four focus areas that together cover a wide area of the frame. The AF-area mode determines how the focus area is selected and what happens if the subject moves out of the selected focus area while the camera is still focusing. You can choose one of the following AF-area modes:
Focus Lock: Focus Lock can be used to change the composition after focusing, making it possible to focus on a subject that will not be in one of the focus points in the final composition.
Release Modes: The camera can take pictures one at a time, or continuously as long as the shutter release button is pressed. You can also take photos using the self-timer or with an optional remote control. The camera allows you to choose from the following Release Modes:
Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II: The D3400's 3D Color Matrix Metering II evaluates each scene for brightness, color, contrast, size and position of shadows and highlights, selected focus area and camera-to-subject distance, comparing that information against an onboard database of more than 30,000 actual photographic scenes. The result delivers instantly and precisely determined exposures for each scene, even in challenging lighting conditions. It is active when using type E or G lenses.
Metering: You can choose from the following Metering Modes to determine how the camera sets exposure:
Shooting Modes: The Mode Dial on the top of the camera offers a choice of shooting modes, divided into the following categories:
Scene Auto Selector: When in Live View in Auto or Auto Flash Off modes, the camera will automatically analyze the subject and select the appropriate shooting mode when autofocus is enabled. Modes that can be selected include: Portrait, Landscape, Close Up, and Night Portrait.
AE/AF Lock: If your subject is off-centered in the frame, it can become difficult to achieve proper exposure and focus. By engaging the AE/AF Lock feature, you can focus and meter on your subject, lock the exposure and focus by pressing the shutter release button halfway, then recompose your shot before taking the picture. You can choose from the following AE/AF Lock settings.
Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure from -5.0 to +5.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps while shooting in P, S, A, and M modes.
White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. When the camera is set to one of the exposure modes, you can choose one of the following white balance options: Auto, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Shade, and Preset Manual.
Note: In addition to the the basic White Balance options, the camera features Color Temperature settings for specific types of lighting. You can choose from Sodium-vapor lamps, Incandescent/Warm-white fluorescent, White fluorescent, Cool-white fluorescent, Day white fluorescent, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Daylight Fluorescent, Shade, and high temp Mercury-vapor lamps.
ISO Sensitivity: ISO Sensitivity is the digital equivalent of film speed. When lighting is poor, the camera will automatically increase sensitivity, permitting faster exposures, and minimizing blur caused by inadvertent camera movement, up to a maximum equivalent of ISO 25600. In most shooting modes, you can manually select from ISO settings 100 to 25600, with incremental steps of 1 EV.
Active D-Lighting: Nikon's Active D-Lighting can correct exposure issues due to difficult lighting conditions instantly and automatically while you shoot. Active D-Lighting preserves details in highlights and shadows, creating photographs with natural contrast.
Built-in Flash/Optional Speedlights: The camera comes with a convenient built-in pop-up flash. When using the built-in flash, you can choose from the following flash modes:
Accessory Shoe: The camera's accessory shoe, located above the viewfinder, allows you to add an optional Speedlight for more creative flash photography. Nikon Speedlights offer intelligent through-the-lens (i-TTL) flash control and bounce flash capability for a more natural lighting effect without strong shadows. Some Speedlights give you wireless multiple-flash operation through the Nikon Creative Lighting System. The shoe is compatible with the flagship SB-5000, SB-700, and SB-300, and others. The camera supports the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) and can be used with CLS-compatible flash units.
Picture Controls: You can choose from the following Picture Control options:

These lenses are part of Nikon's new "P" series of lenses, using a pulse motor (utilizing stepping motors) for ultra-fast, near silent autofocus. The lenses are optimized for DX-format cameras, and can be used with FX-format cameras in DX Crop Mode. Both lenses include a snap-on front lens cap and a slip-on rear lens cap.

ask Crutchfield....I bought it 2 years ago and it did then. [ Randall Apr 18, 2018 ]
Funny you should ask...Several retailers put together different "package deals" for their cameras. Mine came with a case, but I was amazed that one of the lens covers did not match any lens that also came in the package deal. I called and found out that they try to include compatible materials but miss sometimes. They graciously provided me with a cover that fit and made more sense. In short, read the package deal description and if in doubt, call. The Crutchfield Customer Support staff is friendly and helpful. [ ddanger1 Apr 16, 2018 ]
When I bought these lenses they did come with a case, but I am not sure the case is normally part of the kit. I think the case was part of a Christmas special. [ MICHAEL Apr 16, 2018 ]
