Vari-angle Touchscreen LCD Monitor: The Nikon D5600 has a 3.2" TFT
touchscreen LCD monitor featuring approximately
1,036,800 dots and
an 11-level adjustable brightness (-5 to +5).
The Vari-angle monitor opens outward 180°, and can be rotated 180° forward or
90° backward for high- and low-angle photography. The large LCD monitor has
large fonts with easy-to-view menus. The touchscreen allows you to touch where
you want to focus and shoot, as well as pinch to zoom, and swipe to navigate
menus and view photos. The monitor can display shooting
information such as shutter speed, aperture, and number of exposures remaining
as well as the settings currently applied.
Live View: The camera features Live View, which
allows you to frame your photographs in the monitor instead of the viewfinder.
When the Live View switch is rotated, the mirror is raised and the view through
the lens will be displayed in the monitor. The subject will no longer be visible
in the viewfinder. The Live View display will show up to 13 items, including
shooting, focus, and AF-area modes, along with other status indicators. You can
opt to hide many of the indicators, or overlay a framing grid in the monitor.
Optical Viewfinder: The D5600 uses a fixed
eye-level pentamirror single-lens reflex viewfinder with a built-in diopter
adjustment to set the viewfinder to your personal eyesight (with or without
glasses). The viewfinder's coverage
area is approximately 95% horizontal and vertical. During self-timer or remote control
operation when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light may
enter the eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured. To
prevent this, you can use the optional DK-5 eyepiece cap to cover the eyepiece.
Image Sensor: The D5600 features a 23.5mm x 15.6mm DX-format CMOS
image sensor with a total pixel count of approximately 24.78 million pixels and
an effective pixel count of approximately 24.2 million.
Dust Reduction System: The image sensor is equipped with a low-pass
filter to remove dust or dirt on the sensor. You can set the camera to clean the
image sensor automatically at startup, or at shut down, or both. It can also be
set to turn the auto cleaning function off.
Compatible Lenses: The D5600 is equipped with the standard
Nikon F bayonet mount with AF contacts. DX-format-compatible lenses are
recommended. If Nikon FX-format lenses are mounted on the camera, the equivalent
focal length is approximately 1.5x that of DX lenses (a 50mm FX lens has an
equivalent focal length of 75mm on this camera). The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm
f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is included
in this kit.
Recording Media: The camera records
images on SD, SDHC,
and SDXC cards, including ultra high-speed UHS-I cards. Cards rated Speed Class
6 or 10, or UHS Speed Class U1, are recommended for movie recording. The camera has no internal memory,
and no SD cards are included with the camera.
Still Image Formats: The D5600
records still images in JPEG and NEF (RAW) formats. You can choose from the

Movie Recording: The D5600 records movies in High Definition
in 16:9 aspect ratio. Movies are recorded in MOV
file format, with H.264/MPEG-4 advanced video coding, and Linear PCM audio,
recorded by the built-in stereo microphone. You can record in High Quality or
Normal Quality modes. The maximum file size for individual movies is 4 GB. Movies can be recorded in
the following frame sizes and rates:

SnapBridge: The Nikon SnapBridge app provides a camera
interface on your smartphone or tablet. Through the app you can view photos on
the camera's memory card, manually or automatically transfer photos and videos
from the camera, and control the camera remotely. You can also use the app to
add photo information or text to uploaded photos. Time and location data from
the smart device can be loaded to the photo data of any still images or movies
taken by the camera. The SnapBridge app is available for your Android (4.4 and up) or iOS (8.4
or later) device.
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) / Wi-Fi: The D5600 has built-in
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 b/g) wireless technologies for
connecting the camera to your smartphone or tablet through the SnapBridge app
(see above). A Wi-Fi connection is recommended for movies and other large-volume
uploads. When Android devices with NFC (Near-Field Communication) are used, you
can pair it with the camera by touching the camera's N-Mark, located on the
Focus Modes: The camera uses the Nikon Multi-CAM 4800
autofocus sensor module with TTL phase detection. You can choose from the
following autofocus and manual focus modes:
- Auto-servo AF (AF-A): Camera automatically selects single-servo
autofocus if subject is stationary, and continuous-servo autofocus if
subject is moving.
- Single-servo Autofocus (AF-S): For stationary subjects.
Focus locks when shutter-release button is pressed halfway.
- Continuous-servo Autofocus (AF-C): For moving subjects.
Camera focuses continuously while shutter release button is pressed halfway.
- Manual (M): Manual focus is available for lenses that do not
support autofocus (non-AF Nikkor lenses) or when autofocus does not produce
the desired results.
AF Assist Illuminator: The built-in AF assist illuminator enables the
camera to focus even when the subject is poorly lit. This feature will light
automatically to assist the autofocus operation when the shutter release button
is pressed halfway. It has an operating range of 1'-8" to 9'-10".
AF-Area Modes: The D5600 offers a choice of four focus areas that
together cover a wide area of the frame. The AF-area mode determines how the
focus area is selected and what happens if the subject moves out of the selected
focus area while the camera is still focusing. You can choose one of the
following AF-area modes:
- Single Point: You select the focus area manually and
the camera focuses on the subject in the selected focus area only.
- Dynamic Area (9, 21, or 39 AF points): In AF-A and AF-C modes, user selects
focus point manually but camera will focus based on information from
surrounding focus points if subject briefly leaves the selected point. In
AF-S focus mode, you select the focus point manually.
- Auto Area: Camera automatically detects subject and selects focus
- 3D-Tracking: In AF-A and AF-C focus modes, you select
the focus point using the multi-selector. If subject moves after camera has
focused, camera uses 3D tracking to select new focus point and keep focus
locked on original subject while shutter release pressed halfway. If subject
leaves viewfinder, you will need to remove finger from shutter release
button and recompose photo with subject in the selected focus point.
Release Modes: The camera
can take pictures one at a time, or continuously as long as the shutter release
button is pressed. You can also take photos using the self-timer or with an
optional remote control. The camera allows you to choose from the following
- Single Frame: The camera takes one photograph each time the
shutter release button is pressed.
- Continuous L (low speed): The camera records photographs up to
frames per second while the shutter release button is held down.
- Continuous H (high speed): The camera records photographs up to
frames per second while the shutter release button is held down. (4 fps for
- Quiet Shutter Release: Like Single Frame, the camera
takes one photo when the shutter release is pressed. There is no beep sound
emitted when the camera focuses, and the camera noise is kept to a minimum.
- Self-timer: This mode can be used to reduce camera
shake or for self-portraits. You can set the delay timer to take the photo
2, 5, 10, or 20 seconds after you press the shutter release. You can also
select the number of photos taken between 1 and 9.
Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II: The D5600's 3D
Color Matrix Metering II evaluates each scene for brightness, color, contrast,
size and position of shadows and highlights, selected focus area and
camera-to-subject distance, comparing that information against an onboard
database of more than 30,000 actual photographic scenes. The result delivers
instantly and precisely determined exposures for each scene, even in challenging
Metering: You can choose from the following Metering Modes
to determine how the camera sets exposure:
- Matrix: Produces natural results in most situations.
Camera uses a 2016-pixel RGB sensor to meter a wide area of the frame and set
exposure according to tone distribution, color, composition, and with
type G or D lenses, range information. (See 3D Color Matrix Metering II
above). With other CPU lenses, the camera uses color matrix metering II,
which does not include 3D range information.
- Center-weighted: The camera meters the entire frame but assigns
greatest weight (75%) to an 8mm circle in the center of the frame.
- Spot: The camera meters exposure in a 3.5mm circle of
the frame, or about 2.5% of the frame. This
ensures that the subject will be correctly exposed, even when background is
much brighter or darker.
Mode Dial on the top of the camera offers a wide choice of shooting modes,
organized in 4 groups:
- Auto Modes: For simple, point-and-shoot photography:
Auto and Auto (flash off).
- P, S, A, and M Modes: For full control over camera
settings: Programmed Auto, Shutter-Priority Auto, Aperture-priority Auto,
- Scene Modes: The camera automatically optimizes
settings to suit the scene selected: Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports,
Close up, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Party/Indoor,
Beach/Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Pet Portrait, Candlelight, Blossom, Autumn
Colors, and Food.
- Special Effects: You can choose from the following special
effects for still images and movies: Night Vision, Super Vivid, Pop, Photo
Illustration, Toy Camera
Effect, Selective Color, Silhouette, High Key, and Low Key.
Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value
suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the
exposure from -5.0 to +5.0 EV in 1/3 EV or 1/2 EV steps in the P, S, A, and M modes.
White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under
different types of lighting. When the camera is set to one of the exposure
modes (P, S, A, M), you can choose one of the following white balance options:
Auto, Incandescent, Fluorescent (7 types), Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Shade, and
ISO Sensitivity: ISO Sensitivity is the digital equivalent
of film speed. When lighting is poor, the camera will automatically
increase sensitivity, permitting faster exposures, and minimizing blur caused by
inadvertent camera movement, up to a maximum equivalent of ISO 6400. You can manually select from ISO settings 100
to 25600, with incremental steps of 1/3EV.
High Dynamic Range (HDR): The High Dynamic Range (HDR)
function combines two exposures to form a single image that captures a wide
range of tones from shadows to highlights, even with high-contrast subjects. You
can select from the following options: Auto, Extra High, High, Normal, Low, or
Active D-Lighting: Nikon's Active D-Lighting can
correct exposure issues due to difficult lighting conditions instantly and
automatically while you shoot. Active D-Lighting preserves details in highlights
and shadows, creating photographs with natural contrast. You can select Auto,
Extra High, High, Normal, Low, and Off.
Interval Timer Photography: You can take photographs
automatically at preset intervals. When setting up the interval timer shooting,
you can choose the following parameters:
- Starting Time: Now or at an entered time (clock must be
- Interval: 1 second to 24 hours
- Number of Intervals: 1 to 9999 times
Note: Use of a tripod is recommended during interval timer
Built-in Flash: The D5600 has a built-in flash that will pop
up automatically in low light situations, or can be manually raised with a
button release. The camera offers the following flash sync
modes depending upon the shooting mode selected: Auto, Auto with Red-eye
Reduction, Auto Slow Sync, Auto Slow Sync with Red-eye Reduction, Rear-curtain
Sync, Rear-curtain + Slow Sync, Fill Flash, and Flash Off.
Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS): Nikon's Creative
Lighting System (CLS) offers improved communication between the camera and
compatible external flash units for improved flash photography. The camera's
Accessory Shoe is compatible with the following optional Speedlights:
SB-910, SB-900, SB-800,
Flash Compensation: In P, S, A, and M modes, the flash
compensation can be used to increase or reduce flash output from the
level chosen by the camera's flash control system. The flash exposure
compensation can be set to values between -3 EV (darker) and +3 EV (brighter) in increments of 1/3
Picture Controls: When the camera is set to one of the P,
S, A, or M
modes, you can choose from the following Picture Control options: Standard,
Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, Landscape and Flat.
Custom Settings: The D5600 features a custom settings menu
that allows you to customize the camera settings to suit your individual
preferences. There are six main setting areas:
- Autofocus: AF-C Priority selection, Number of focus
points, Built-in AF-assist illuminator, Rangefinder, Manual focus ring in AF
- Exposure: EV steps for exposure control, ISO display
- Timers/AE Lock: Shutter-release button AE-L, Auto off timers, Self timer
- Shooting/Display: Viewfinder grid display, File number
sequence, Exposure delay mode, Date Stamp, Reverse Indicators
- Bracketing/Flash: Flash control for built-in flash/optional
flash, Auto bracketing set
- Controls: Assign function button, Assign AE-L/AF-L
button, Reverse dial rotation, Assign touch function
18-140mm Lens: This package includes an AF-S DX Nikkor
18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens, a compact, all-in-one lens that is good for
multiple shooting situations. You can shoot ultra-sharp photos and videos, from
wide-angle family portraits to telephoto close-ups on the playing field. It is
designed for use with Nikon DSLRs with DX-format image sensors. The lens
features Vibration Reduction (VR) to reduce blur cause by camera shake, and a
Focus Mode switch for switching to Auto Focus or Manual Focus.
Vibration Reduction (VR): The lens is equipped with Nikon's
Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, which reduces blur caused by camera shake.
When VR is enabled, the range of available shutter speeds is increased
(including speeds up to 4.0 stops slower than those without VR), and permits
hand-held, tripod-free photography in a wide range of situations. You can enable
or disable Vibration Reduction by using the 2-way VR switch on the lens barrel.
Focus Mode Switch: The lens includes a 2-way Focus Mode
switch on the barrel of the lens. In the A position, the camera will
automatically focus the photo when the shutter release button is pressed
halfway. You can also manually focus while in Auto Focus mode by turning the
focus ring after auto focusing has taken place. When switched to the M position,
you can focus manually by rotating the focus ring on the lens.
Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC): Nikon's Super
Integrated Coating (SIC) offers superior color performance and substantially
reduced ghosting and flare, by enhancing light transmission.
Silent Wave Motor (SWM): The exclusive Nikon Silent Wave
Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate, and quiet auto focus.
Internal Focus: Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet
autofocus without changing the length of the lens, retaining working distance
throughout the focus range.
Lens Construction: The AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm lens has 17
elements in 12 groups, including 1 ED (Extra-low Dispersion glass) lens element
for maximum sharpness and minimum chromatic aberrations, and 1 aspherical lens

GPS Units: Nikon's optional GP-1 or
GPS units can be connected to the camera's Accessory Terminal, using the cable
supplied with the device. Location data from the GPS unit can determine the
camera's current position (latitude, longitude, altitude) and the current time
as provided by satellite navigation systems, and embed it into photographs and
movies taken with the camera.
Microphone: The camera has a 3.5mm mini-jack for connecting
an optional microphone, such as the Nikon
ME-1. The microphone receives power from the camera. The microphone input is
also compatible with other 3rd party microphones with 3.5mm plugs.
Playback, Editing And Printing
Image Playback: The D5600 will play back still images in
Full-Frame one-at-a-time in the order recorded. You can display varying amounts
of photo information, superimposed over the images. Thumbnail images can be
displayed at 4, 12, or 80 at a time, or by date in a calendar display.
Slide Show: This features plays photographs back in an
automatic slide show manner. You can set the frame interval at 2, 3, 5, or 10
Playback Zoom: During single-image and thumbnail playback,
you can zoom in on the selected image. Once
the image is enlarged, you can pan around the image on the LCD monitor using the multi
selector. You can zoom in to a maximum of 33x for large images, 25x for medium
images, and 13x for small images.
Retouching Menu: These
options can be used to create, trimmed, resized, or retouch existing copies of
the photographs in the memory card. You can choose from the following options: D-Lighting, Red-eye correction, Trim, Monochrome, Filter effects, Image overlay, NEF (RAW) processing, Resize, Quick retouch, Straighten,
Distortion control, Fisheye, Color outline, Color sketch, Perspective control,
Miniature effect, Selective color, Edit movie, Photo Illustration, Painting, and Side-by-side comparison.
Movie Playback: When playing back movies, you can perform
the following functions: Pause/play, Advance/rewind, Skip 10 seconds (ahead or
back), Adjust volume, and Edit movie. When editing, you can create a copy from
which the opening or closing footage has been removed. If desired, you can save
a selected frame as a JPEG still.
PictBridge Printing Capability: You can connect this camera
directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is a new standard that
allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge
compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand. An optional Micro USB cable is required for connecting the camera to the
Micro USB Connection: The Nikon D5600 utilizes a single
Micro USB connector for interfacing the camera with your computer via USB. An
optional Micro USB cable, such as the
UC-E20, is required for connecting the camera to your computer or to a
HDMI: The camera has a Type C mini-HDMI connection for
connecting to an HDTV for playing back High Definition movies and high
resolution still images. A Mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable is required. The HDMI output resolution can be set to Auto, 480p, 576p,
720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
Microphone Input: A 3.5mm stereo mini-jack microphone input
lets you connect an optional external microphone.
Accessory Terminal: The Accessory Terminal is provided for
connecting optional devices, such as the receiver for a wireless remote or remote
shutter release. (See Optional Accessories
section above for specific accessories.)
Li-ion Battery Pack: The D5600 comes with a long lasting rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Pack
(EN-EL14a), with the capacity of approximately
970 still images or 70 minutes of video recording (at 1920 x 1080/60p) per
Quick Charger: The camera also comes with a Battery Charger (MH-24)
to the charge the supplied Li-ion battery pack. The MH-24 will charge the EN-EL14a
battery pack in approximately 1 hour 50 minutes.
Backup Battery: The camera's internal backup battery can provide up to
a month of backup power after about three days of charging from the EN-EL14a
battery pack. The backup battery powers the camera's internal clock, and
maintains settings when the power is turned off.
Auto Off Timers: This feature allows you to choose how long
the monitor and exposure meters remain on when no operations are performed to
prevent battery drain. You can choose from Short, Normal, or Long options, which
have timers of preset durations for Playback/Menus, Image Review, Live View, and
Standby Timer. You can also customize separate delays for each, if desired.
Optional AC Adapter: The EP-5A Power Connector and EH-5b AC
Adapter can be used to power the camera for extended periods. It is recommended
for long slide shows, extremely long exposures, or interval timer shooting.
ViewNX-i 2: Nikon's ViewNXi and Capture NX-D software can
be downloaded from the Nikon website (URL provided in the User's Manual).
ViewNX-i allows you to upload, view, edit, and share photos and movies.
Capture NX-D software is for fine-tuning your photos, changing settings for
NEF (RAW) pictures, and saving them in other formats (JPEG, TIFF, etc.).
Capture NX-D also has an Image Dust Off feature that processes NEF (RAW)
images to remove image artifacts caused by dust inside the camera.
