About the Nikon NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S

Nikon's most powerful super-telephoto prime
Nikon's most powerful super-telephoto prime
Nikon has made getting extreme close-ups from a distance much easier and more affordable than ever. Pair the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S super-telephoto prime lens with your Nikon Z Series mirrorless camera for spectacular, detailed shots from a remote vanage point.
It's great for unobtrusively zooming in on animals in their natural environments — like birds in the trees, in the water, or on the wing. It's equally adept at capturing action on athletic fields of play or topographical details of the moon at night. And it's light enough to carry with you all day long.
Enjoy exceptional image and build quality
If you own a Z Series camera you're probably hip to the company's exceptional lineup of Z-mount lenses.
The NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S complements the other high-end glass in Nikon's upper-echelon S Line, offering superb image and build quality. You'll enjoy razor-sharp focus, vibrant, punchy colors, and beautiful out-of-focus elements.
Light and agile
This lens only weighs in at around 5.25 pounds — just a little more than half the weight of the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR and the FTZ adapter you'd need to mount it on your Z Series camera. That makes it much more manageable for a day of shooting in the field than most lenses of its size and quality.
Extend your reach
You can get from 1.4x to 2x more magnification if you use one of Nikon's Z Teleconverters. You'll lose one or two f/stops when you use a teleconverter, but you'll be that much closer to your subjects.
And when you switch your shooting area to DX Crop mode, you can get an angle of view equivalent to 1200mm with the lens alone and up to 2400mm with a teleconverter.

Product Research
Features
Overview: The Nikon NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S lens is a super-telephoto prime lens that can be used for action sports, news gathering, and wildlife photography. It is designed for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras with the FX format (full frame), but can be used with DX-format (APS-C) cameras with an equivalent focal length of 1200mm. At 5-1/4 pounds, the lens is about half the weight of the NIKKOR 800mm lens and the Mount Adapter for Nikon DSLR cameras. The lens comes with a slip-on front lens cap, lens hood, tripod collar, shoulder strap, and a lens case.
Nikkor S-Line: The lens is part of the NIKKOR Z S-Line of lenses which reflect the newly established standards in design principles and quality control that are stricter than Nikon's conventional standards. Each S-Line lens provides an optical performance with rich detail and a sense of reality in every still image or movie it creates. S-Line lenses reach new heights of achievement in resolution, bokeh, chromatic aberration correction, ghost/flare reduction, and point-image reproduction.
Nikon Technologies: The NIKKOR Z 800mm lens is manufactured with the following exclusive Nikon Technologies:
- Phase Fresnel (PF): The camera uses Phase Fresnel (PF) lens elements to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration and ghosting when combined with ordinary glass lens elements. Fresnel lenses have been used in lighthouses to project light. Nikon uses the idea in reverse -- to gather light instead of projecting it. Using a Phase Fresnel lens element allows Nikon to use fewer lens elements, which results in a more compact and lightweight lens.
- Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism: The lens has an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism that provides excellent aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting.
- Nano Crystal Coat: Nikon's exclusive Nano Crystal Coat further reduces ghosting and internal flare to insure that fine, clear images are reproduced under a wide variety of shooting conditions, from sunny outdoors to spotlighted interior scenes.
- Stepping Motor (STM): The lens uses a stepping motor for fast, accurate, smooth, quiet autofocus. The quiet mechanism makes the lens ideal for use when shooting video.
- Vibration Reduction (VR): The lens is equipped with Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, which reduces blur caused by camera shake. When VR is enabled, handheld vibrations are reduced equivalent to a shutter speed 5.0 stops faster in Normal Mode. When used with the Z 9 camera, Synchro VR combines in-camera and in-lens VR for up to 5.5 stops compensation. The lens features a 3-way switch for activating Vibration Reduction and choosing Normal or Sport modes.
- Focus Mode Switch: The lens includes a 2-way Focus Mode switch on the barrel of the lens, allowing you to choose between Autofocus (A) and Manual Focus (M).
- Internal Focus (IF): Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet autofocus without changing the length of the lens, retaining working distance throughout the focus range.
Lens Construction: The NIKKOR Z 800mm lens combines advanced NIKKOR optics and lens technology. Optically, the lens has 22 elements in 41 groups, including 3 ED (Extra-low Dispersion glass) lens elements for maximum sharpness and minimum chromatic aberrations. It also has 1 Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element, 1 PF element, lens elements with Nano-Crystal coating, and a fluorine-coated front lens element to repel dust, water droplets, grease, and dirt.
Control Ring: The smooth operating Control Ring gives you quick access to several functions, including aperture control, exposure compensation, or ISO sensitivity. The functionality is customizable in the menu of the attached Z-series camera. The ring rotates in silence, which is ideal for shooting video.
Function Buttons: Four shortcut buttons positioned every 90° around the lens barrel can be customized to specific functions. Some options include focus lock, depth of field preview, image magnify (for focus check), and more.
Memory Recall: When you have achieved a desired focus position, the Memory Set button on the lens barrel lets you save the focus position for later use. The focal position can be recalled using the control ring or the shortcut button to which Memory Recall is assigned. The stored distance is reset when the lens is detached, but is not reset when the lens is detached. Memory Recall is available only when the lens is mounted on a compatible camera, such as the Z 9, Z 7II, and the Z 6II.
Focus Limit Switch: With the Focus Limit Switch, you can determine the focus distance limits for auto focus. At the "Full" setting, you can focus on subjects at any distance between 16.41' (5m) and infinity. However, if your subject will always be at a distance greater than 32.81' (10m), you can obtain faster focusing by setting the switch to "∞-10m."
Tripod Collar: The 800mm lens has a rotating tripod collar for attaching the tripod to the lens instead of the camera. This helps achieve better balance, and makes it easier to switch between portrait (vertical) and landscape (horizontal) orientation. Loosening the tripod collar lock screw allows you to rotate the camera without removing it from the tripod. The lens can rotate 360° inside the collar, and there are index markings every 90°.
Lens Filter Holder: The lens is equipped with a slip-in filter holder near the rear of the lens. The filter holder accepts optional 46mm screw-on filters.
Lens Hood: The NIKKOR Z 800mm lens includes the HB-104 lens hood that can be mounted to the front of the lens to block stray light that could cause lens flare or ghosting. It can also be used to protect the front lens element. When mounted to the lens, the hood adds approximately 5" to the overall length of the lens. When not in use, the lens hood can be reverse-mounted onto the lens for storage.
Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a rounded 9-blade diaphragm which renders a more natural appearance of out-of-focus image areas.
