The BEST 300mm FX lens
John from Sanford, NC on 4/11/2017
Exceptional lens - tack sharp focus and considerably lighter than other 300mm or similarly sized lenses. Hand-held works well. Great birding and landscape lens. Speed of order processing, shipping and delivery by Crutchfield second to none.
Pros: size and weight
Cons: None

Sharp lens
Crutchfield customer from Elma, NY on 8/14/2016
I am using the lens primarily for bird photography. It's small size and weight make it an ideal lens to carry around. Also has very fast focus.
Pros: Light weight
Cons: Price

AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED
ML from los angeles, CA on 1/21/2016
This lens gives great resolution when used with the Nikon 810. The auto-focus is quick and worked very well with small backyard songbirds, hand-held. It is light and easy to use without a tripod.
Pros: Great resolution, quick auto-focus, AR, lightweight, works well with 1.4 and 1.7 teleconverters, feels well balanced on Nikon 810, will be my selected lens for hikes ! Much easier to use than the new Nikon 200-500mm. Main advantage over my other prime telephoto Nikon lenses is the light weight.
Cons: None so far ! I am pleased with the auto-focus, but is does slow down at higher f stops. I have not had problems with the focus ring as described by other reviewers.

NIce lens

Very nice and light lens that is very sharp, tracks and focuses well, even with the 1.4X attached. A bit expensive but I am not unhappy I purchased it.
Pros: Light, fast and sharp, seems to be built well.. very easy to carry around with even with a 1.4X TC and gets you420MM on a lens that wont weight you down or give you a back ache.
Cons: Price is a bit high, but then I think all Nikon Lenses are..You have to be very careful holding this lens in AF that you dont turn the focus ring while shooting since you fingers or palm rest on the focus ring at least Mine do, a slight turn of ring will get you a blurred image in AFS if you happen turn it by accident, not so much single shot but ff you shoot a burst and inadvertently turn the focus ring a hair it will go out of focus until you refocus

Sharp wide open, and takes TC's well
BC from Pittsburgh on 11/19/2015
This lightweight lens is remarkable. I detect no decrease in sharpness stopping down from f/4 to f/5.6, which I can say about very few lenses. It tracks AF well on my D800 and produces contrasty images edge-to-edge. I have used it extensively with the TC-14E III and TC-20E III and found it to produce excellent results. I'm very happy using it wide-open with the 1.4x TC @ 420mm f/5.6 and it still focuses reasonably fast. With 2x TC I find only a small improvement stopping down from f/8 to f/10, but AF is very slow @ 600mm f/8. The VR works well and I've taken sharp shots @ 600mm and 1/40 sec and sometimes at 1/20 sec.
Pros: Lightweight and small, takes TCs well, VR very impressive.
Cons: I wish the AF was faster (without TCs) than it is. If you're used to the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II, you'll be disappointed by the AF speed. I've tried the TC-14E III on the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II and it focuses much faster @ 280mm f/4 than the 300mm f/4E does.
