Excellent Go-To Lens for Portraits and Everyday Shooting

Have only had this lens for less than a week now, but am very pleased with the results I'm getting with it installed on my D3400. With the 3400, this lens allows the same basic view and capture as the human eye. I also like that with its large maximum aperture, it enables the 3400's low light capability to really shine. While the lens is mostly composed of a plastic based material (except for the optics), it feels very solid and well made. Too, with the barrel portion that attaches to the base of the camera being metal, the overall fit and finish is excellent. I fully expect it to provide me with years of quality performance.

Very clear and clean shots. Works great in low light. It's pretty light. It has worked great for portraits as well as other pictures. I use a D3200. All my Canon friends are jealous that they can't get a cheap Prime lens of this level of quality. This is my first prime lens for my Nikon D3200.

This lens is one of my favorite to use for low lighting and portraits. The blurred background in my pictures is incredible. Every shot is clean and crisp! I would highly recommend this lens for anyone wanting something better than their standard packaged lens. I purchased this lens for low light situations, light photographing the little ones in our clan. I was not disappointed. Shots that used to warn me about needing the flash, now are taken with no flash and are plenty bright. Mission accomplished!

I love low light photography. I can catch that moment when people are relaxed and natural or when my grandchild is sleeping. The Nikkor 35mm 1.8 lens is a super lens in low or bright light. The images are bright, clear, clean, and natural looking edge to edge. Nikon optics are excellently utilized in light gathering and range broadening. I can't do without my low light wide angle Nikkor 35mm 1.8 lens.

What a great lens for this price range. I bought a 50mm 1.8 and gave it to my daughter to use, just not flexable enough for me in a room. I was just backing up all the time just to get the right picture. The 35mm was perfect for what I wanted this lens to do, sharp, clear, low light or flash and no trouble with backing up. This Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX lens produces sharp pictures and great color and contrast. It is also perfect for portrait and other general purposes (semi-macro etc). This lens also produces nice bokeh. The picture quality and bokeh quality are comparable with the other Nikon prime lenses (50mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4 AF-S etc) lens which are famous for being sharp. Overall, this is a very versatile lens.

There is a reason why this lens is on most camera review web pages as a must buy for your Nikon DSLR, just look at the fan club the "Nifty-Fifty" lens has and you'll see why. 35mm is a definite upgrade to 18-55mm kit lens

I am a travel blogger and rely upon a camera to take pictures of places that I stay, eat at and visit. I purchased this 35mm DX lens from Crutchfield just before I left for a trip to Italy and it did not disappoint. I had read reviews of this prime lens by Ken Rockwell and by reviewers on various tech sites and I must say that I agree with many of the reviews in regards to the lens' sharpness and speed. PROS The lens is extremely sharp and quick. I noticed this most when I took portrait shots of family and friends. The lens also performs admirably in low-light conditions though a tripod is necessary to cut down on the blur of even slow-moving subjects. The lens is perfect for taking pictures of dishes at restaurants. The bokeh isn't great but it's not bad either. CONS The lens isn't for landscape photography though some of the landscape I shot came out nice. CONCLUSION Overall, this lens is a great prime lens and is an upgrade to the standard Nikon 18-55mm lens. Worth the investment.

Great, versatile lens

I bought this lens for low light situations and when I don't feel like lugging my 18-200 around. On a crop sensor (like the D7000 I use), I see a fixed focal length of roughly 53mm. This is about what the eye see's, so it is great for tight indoor situations too. I'm very happy with it's performance and would definitely recommend it.

Great Value for "Normal" length Lens

As an aspiring hobbyist photographer, I am in the process of leaving my kit 18-55mm lens behind, for lenses with more clarity, colors, and speed. This is a fixed focal length lens, so here are the major down sides: You have to walk forward and backward to "zoom", you have to change the lens when it doesn't suite the shot, and you'll have to carry more lenses if you need lots of focal lengths. The positives far outweigh the negatives for me. First is that the clarity of the glass is immediately noticeable on the camera screen and look even better on your computer. My pictures look sharper, and almost start to look clear enough to be professional. Due to the ability to gather more light, I am able to expose my subjects which are in shadows, and pull enough colors to be useful without heavy photoshop work. Due to the increased speed of the lens, I can capture pictures indoors without a flash, merely but using a large aperture and a bump in ISO. You'll know that the scene is too dark when your autofocus light is not able to provide enough light to focus on your subject. I might use the kit lens for vacations, but for my hobbyist photography work, this is now my "Go-to" lens.

Fun Lens

This is a very fun lens. At this price for f/1.8 and exclusively made for DX cameras, it's a no brainer. It's light, it's compact, pictures almost always look good with this lens. I used to have D300 and 18-200mm as my all occasion gear and I hate to carry it on vacation trips. It's too heavy and iPhone takes good pictures too. But now I take my D5100 with 35mm out with me more often.

Superb Prime for your Everyday

This may be the shortest review I've written. Colors are off the charts focus speed good. Small Light great for D80-90 and D5k-3K. 35 mm range is perfect for shooting kids at activities. f1.8 is handy when a flash is not allowed. I am beginning to appreciate the primes over the zooms because they are range that I need. Zoom with your feet and use this lens it will not disappoint.

Very good buy when you don't want to "scare" your subject with flash; also at the same light level 30mm gives better resolution then my 18-105mm - something you will see well with some magnification, however still visible on photos 7"x5'' or larger.

18-200 owners probably don't need this

I've been using the Nikon 18-200 exclusively for the past 6 months and been very satisfied with it. Not content to leave "good enough" alone, I decided that I wanted to try this lens out to see if it's low-light benefits were really all that. By low light, I mean the kind of soft lighting you have in your living room with just a lamp and the TV on during the evening. I tested it out side by side with the 18-200 for about an hour. Yes, it's true, this lens DOES enable you to get a slightly higher shutter speed than the 18-200 when you're taking photographs in low-light. But what I didn't consider is how much an advantage the VR gives my 18-200. I was surprised to find that most of the time, the 18-200 was still able to give me a sharp photo in the dark. I must be lazy too, because despite the weight savings, I was almost immediately missing the convenience of the zoom. In the end, I'm choosing to return the 35mm 1.8 because I didn't feel that it really gave me anything that I didn't already have. With the 18- 200, I'm sharp down to 1/8 shutter, and I find that I can do all the low light photography I'm really ever going to get into just fine. I'm glad I tried it out, but for me the 18-200 is still the only lens I need.

This lens is a very good deal. It has a convenient focal length for DX and it's fast enough for just about any situation. The bokeh is very nice. It has a lot of primary lateral chomatic aberration (red/blue fringes near the edges of the image) but in my experience this is not noticeable in most real-world shots. The AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D lacks this problem, but doesn't autofocus on the D40, so overall I prefer this lens.

If you have a nikon DSLR and you want to shoot in low light your cameras ISO adjustment and lenses that have VR are a help. If you want to maintain a high shutter speed, you need this lens. Your camera must be the DX format. I use mine on a D40, it works great.
