Handy control options

You can push the Start button to begin playing a record, and then hit the Stop button to lift and return the tonearm and shut off the turntable. A tonearm Lift button is also included to let you raise and lower the arm without stopping the platter.

And as someone who has listened to the stylus bumping around in the final groove of a record for several minutes while finishing a tricky task, I'm personally fond of the auto stop feature: it lifts and returns the tonearm automatically when a record has played all the way through. What a relief!

Product Research

Fully Automatic Turntable: The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 belt-drive turntable offers fully automatic operation, so you can simply press the Start button to begin play and the Stop button to lift and return the tone arm and shut off the turntable (the stop function occurs automatically when a record has played all the way through). If you prefer manual control, a hydraulically damped lift control allows the stylus to be precisely and safely lowered and raised at any point on a record.

Balanced Tonearm w/ Dual Moving Magnet Phono Cartridge: The turntable's balanced straight tonearm comes with an uninstalled 1/2" mount universal headshell and AT91R Dual Moving Magnet phono cartridge with conical stylus, giving you excellent high-fidelity performance, plus the option to use other moving magnet or moving coil cartridges of your choosing.

Note: The headshell/cartridge/stylus assembly must be installed on the tonearm.

2-Speed Operation: The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 fully automatic turntable is equipped to play both 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records (adapter included).

Anti-Vibration Construction: The AT-LP3 is constructed of anti-vibration damping materials that limits low-frequency feedback. Resonance is further reduced by the turntable's die-cast aluminum platter and accompanying 4mm rubber damping mat.

Built-in Switchable  Preamplifier: The built-in switchable stereo phono/line-level preamplifier permits use of the AT-LP3 turntable with stereo systems having either magnetic-phono inputs or line-level (Aux) inputs; also allows convenient use of the turntable with most powered speakers.

Attached Stereo RCA Cable: The AT-LP3 turntable features an attached 40" stereo RCA output cable that enables connection to a home stereo, powered speakers and other components whether they have a dedicated turntable input or not.

Detachable Power Cord: The turntable comes with a detachable 6' AC power cord (2-prong).

Hinged Dust Cover: The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 turntable comes with a hinged dust cover that is also removable.

Two Available Colors: The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 turntable is available in black or white.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
Size [ DENNIS  Jun 19, 2020 ]
bc of good reviews. [ Gloria  Jun 17, 2020 ]
The mid-range of the lower end cost of this turntable plus the various reviews from previous purchasers convinced me to plunk for this particular turntable. The options fell in line with what my husband is looking for. I chose it for his Christmas gift. [ Marta  Dec 09, 2019 ]
Customer service suggested this turntable based on my needs and budget. I then spent hours researching on the web and when all was said and done, came back to the original recommendation. [ Elizabeth Ann  Aug 26, 2019 ]
back into vinyl, choosing to buy rather than repair. Have always used AT cartridges and stylus. This is for a small system, built-in preamp is a plus. [ PAUL  May 13, 2019 ]
A good track record for the product and "Crutchfield" and also the tech advise from Maverick! [ john  Jan 24, 2019 ]
I wanted a solid entry level turntable to begin listening again to records I've had for 40 years. [ Steven  Dec 14, 2018 ]
The price was right for a not-too-serious audiophile. This is replacing a 50 year old Garrard turntable! [ Danley  Dec 14, 2018 ]
advisor recommendations; ease of use; price. [ Mark  Nov 18, 2018 ]
I wanted a turntable that was a step up from LP60 with the option to upgrade in the future. I also wanted an automatic. I picked this one because the Denon wasn't on sale at the time, and it seems that the included cartridge is better than the Denon's. Also this had strong reviews from What Hi-Fi [ Nicholas  Nov 02, 2018 ]
Quality [ Denise  Sep 29, 2018 ]
Because it was automatic and on sale. [ MILLIE  Jun 09, 2018 ]
It had all the features we were shopping for in a turntable for our teenager who has recently become interested in listening to vinyl. The fact that it went on sale today was an added bonus! Thanks to Tim for sharing his expertise on the phone when I called yesterday! [ Denver Clark  Apr 08, 2018 ]
I don't use vinyl often, but I did need to replace my old, cheap turntable with something better. Also, due to the way I listen, I wanted an automatic turntable, so I don't have to jump up from where I'm sitting and reading when the record ends. This was in my price range, well reviewed, and had the features I wanted. [ Jim  Mar 02, 2018 ]
right price range and fully automatic. [ John  Feb 15, 2018 ]
Fully automatic. [ Jan Paul  Jan 16, 2018 ]
Features [ Clams B.  Dec 28, 2017 ]
value, features price [ Andrew  Nov 22, 2017 ]
I like these features: Automatic operation, where the arm returns on its own; Replaceable cartridge; Requires pre-amp, phono input on receiver, or phono amp. I have an AudioTechnica that I like that lacks all but the first feature. [ Walter R.  Nov 05, 2017 ]
Great product. Good price. [ Thomas  Oct 01, 2017 ]
reputable brand and competitive pricing [ Peter  Sep 30, 2017 ]
I wanted an automatic turntable better than entry level, such as the AT LP60, which interestingly has a better (elliptical needle) cartridge than the AT-LP3. [ Michael  Aug 01, 2017 ]
Because you didn't have it in black. [ Teddy  Jan 09, 2020 ]
Looks good and affordable" [ Christopher  May 12, 2018 ]

3 questions already asked

What kind of speaker can directly connect to this turntable?
[ Nohelia  Dec 10, 2019 ]
4 answers
You would need an "active speaker", which is sometimes called a "powered speaker". This kind of speaker has a built-in amplifier.
[ James  Dec 31, 2019 ]
To connect speakers directly to this turntable, you would need a set of powered speakers. These type of speakers have built in amplification, so that you do not need a separate amplifier to drive them One of our friendly advisors would love you to help you explore y our options!
[ Calvin  Dec 23, 2019 ]  Staff
You need powered stereo speakers for the best result. I have used PSB Alpha speakers for many years - I see Crutchfield has a pair of powered PSB Alpha desktop speakers for a great (low) price. Highly recommended setup.
[ Dionisio  Dec 23, 2019 ]
I have not connected speakers to my turntable, but if it helps, it came with standard RCA terminals, so, if your speakers do not have matching jacks, you could probably get adapters for them.
[ joseph  Dec 23, 2019 ]
Silly question I know, but will the dust cover remain fixed (open) at a 45 degree angle, or slightly higher? I have a limited distance to a shelf where I want to place a turntable. If this dust cover only stays up at 90 degrees (like the U-Turn Orbit) it won't work for me.
[ Craig  Jan 19, 2019 ]

Hey Craig, sorry for the late reply. I was able to test mine out today and there is only one spot the dust cover stays open, which is about 55-60 degrees. It does not go past this or up to 90, but unfortunately it is not able to stay open at multiple angles. Hope this helps!
[ BRANDON  Feb 05, 2019 ]
No question is silly. But to answer your question, no, if the cover isn't open completely, it closes rather hard. I used a small nightstand from Sauder as a turntable stand next to the entertainment center. No clearance problems that way, plus the turntable is isolated. Happy vinyling!
[ Thomas  Jan 22, 2019 ]
Slightly more than 45 degrees, I measure open height at approx 14.75 inches.
[ Michelle  Jan 21, 2019 ]
It opens and stays at a 45 degree angle. What you see in the picture is how far it opens and doesn't open any further than that.
[ Parker  Jan 21, 2019 ]
Yes it will stay open at 45 degrees (or slightly higher.. I have it in a 15" opening and it works fine.
[ Martin  Jan 21, 2019 ]
The fully open position is as pictured, it appears to be 45 degrees. At this 45 degree full open the top of the lid is 12 inches above the base which is 2 1/2 inches tall. You will need 14 1/2" height between the shelf it sets on and the one above.
[ Michael  Jan 21, 2019 ]
I bought this turntable for a friend, but I believe it stays open at 90 degrees
[ Kevin  Jan 20, 2019 ]
The picture shows the heigh of the opening. It does not open to 90°
[ Carol Ann  Jan 20, 2019 ]
My dust cover does not stay up in my cabinet. I can't say it requires 90 degrees elevation, but it is certainly more than 45 degrees. I just leave the cover off since the turntable is inside a closed cabinet.
[ Robert  Jan 20, 2019 ]
Not quite 90 degrees, but the total height from base to fully opened dust cover is 15"
[ Paul  Jan 20, 2019 ]
45 degrees, as shown in the product photo.
[ ELROY  Jan 20, 2019 ]
How long are the factory attached RCA cables on the Audio Technica Lp-3? Can they be replaced with longer cables? Thank you
[ angelo  Mar 04, 2018 ]

About 3 foot (1 meter).
[ Thomas  Jan 22, 2019 ]
About twenty-four inches, and they are fixed at the turntable end, and cannot be replaced.
[ ELROY  Jan 20, 2019 ]
The cables are about twenty-four inches long, and there is no provision for replacing them with longer cables.
[ ELROY  Mar 05, 2018 ]
Cable is 3' long and can NOT be replaced
[ Paul  Mar 05, 2018 ]
The RCA cables provided are not attached, about 12 inches in length and can be replaced with longer cables.
[ Linda  Mar 05, 2018 ]
The,RCA,cablrs, are only 6 feet long. I bought separate coil of wire/cables so I could spread my speakets, across, the length of my living room. I think I bought th e 50 foot unit. Not at home but when I arrive home later tonight I can look up specs and actual item name. Lawrence Zierler
