Features
Overview: The Boston Acoustics P400 is a new approach to the front channels of a surround system. Three independent speakers are built into one cabinet, front left, center, and front right. Each of the three speakers is identical for a perfectly matched front stage. The P400 is sized to fit well above or below a widescreen TV 42" or larger.
Enclosure: The cabinet is divided into three sections and is built of extruded aluminum, resulting in a superb structural integrity that eliminates the spurious resonances and vibrations that degrade the sound of typical speakers.
Grilles: The package includes 2 aluminum grilles, one silver and one black, to match a variety of decors.
Tweeter: Each speaker in the P400 speaker uses Boston's 1" VR aluminum dome tweeter with AMD (Amplitude Modification Device). This tweeter uses a specially anodized aluminum dome. Compared to a soft dome, aluminum is equally light, yet more rigid. Compared to other hard dome materials, an aluminum dome is unrivaled in its ability to accurately track the input signal, in other words, when the voice coil says "jump," the aluminum dome jumps, without changing shape. AMD is used to further optimize the aluminum dome's output, without taking anything away. AMD is a patented acoustical tuning device that uses precisely sized hollow tubes positioned in front of the tweeter to refocus short wavelength energy and create an extremely smooth, flat response. This is done without using elaborate electronic components that can degrade the sound's purity.
Woofer: Each speaker in the P400 has a 4-1/2" woofer and a 4-1/2" passive radiator. The woofers have large 1-1/2" voice coils for superb driver control and extremely high power handling. They're built from the ground up for the P4 series speakers and use rubber surrounds for added durability. In lieu of ported enclosures, the P400 uses passive radiators to augment the bass response by increasing efficiency.
Video Shielded: This speaker includes MagnaGuard, Boston Acoustics' proprietary magnetic shielding technology. By reducing and containing the magnetic field naturally generated by a loudspeaker's magnet, MagnaGuard allows you to place the speaker near a TV or monitor without distorting the picture.
5-way Binding Posts: Three sets of 5-way binding posts feed the three discrete speakers, allowing you to connect the speaker wire using dual banana plugs, single banana plugs, spade connectors, pin connectors, or bare wire. Bare wire up to 10 gauge fits through the posts. Because of the way the speaker terminal is recessed into the cabinet, if spade connectors are used, they need to be angled.
Wall Mounting Brackets: The P400 is equipped with a metal wall-mounting bracket. Using the wall bracket adds about an inch to the depth of the speaker. The bracket has three mounting options to allow varied angles, the speaker can face perpendicular to the wall or it can be angled 15° up or down. Mounting hardware is included. The bracket can be used to mount the P400 vertically, but given the three speaker in one cabinet design vertical mounting would be unusual.
Bass Management: When setting bass management parameters on your home theater receiver, the outputs for the P400 should be set to Small.
Optional Stand: The P400 speaker can be placed on an optional table top stand, item number 065P4TS.
Dimension Note
Depth: The measured depth of the P400 is 3.931". The included bracket is necessary for wall mounting so the effective depth becomes 4.726".
