About the RetroSound VW Dash Speaker
Your vintage VW solution
Your vintage VW solution
Old Volkswagens are cool vehicles, but they weren't designed for great sound — and it's particularly hard to find a good spot for aftermarket speakers. But now RetroSound offers a neat solution — a 6-3/4" dual voice coil speaker that installs in the existing 5" opening on the driver's side of your dash.
Dual voice coil and a bracket
The package includes a single RetroSound R-65N 6-3/4" speaker and a mounting bracket. The woofer's dual voice coils and dual tweeters allow you to hook up both channels of your car radio, so you'll hear the left and right stereo information. This speaker will work well with a factory or aftermarket radio, but it'll handle up to 50 watts RMS so you can drive it with an outboard amplifier. The speaker will fit in 1958-77 Volkswagens.

RetroSound VW Dash Speaker reviews
This a great sounding speaker. I installed a 4 speaker radio in my bug but I could only get the rear 2 deck speakers to work. This speaker gives me 2 extra speakers worth of sound in the front of my bug. This does fit into a 1972 Super Beetle. However, I don't believe it will fit into 1973 an later Supers.
Pros: Great Sound. Supplied with lots of mounting screws. Very easy to work with. I installed the bracket first and then installed the speaker to the bracket. I used masking tape to hold the screw mount in place on the speaker mount. You'll understand what I mean when you go to mount the speaker.
Cons: None for the speaker. It's just a little tricky to install. You need to remove some relays from the wiring harness (remember to mark each relay, it's location and proper orientation in order to give you some room to maneuver and install the speaker & mount. Other than that, it was a snap to install. I did it in about and hour and 1/2, once I figured out about moving the relays and such. I'm sure this will be the same for the other speaker that is offered as well.

VW Bracket: The VWMSB6 package includes RetroSound's R-65N 6-3/4" dual voice coil stereo input speaker and VWMSB mono speaker bracket. The VWMSB is designed to mount the R-65N in the single speaker dash location in 1958 to 1977 Volkswagen Beetles.
Note: Please enter your vehicle information to confirm compatibility. A note on the VWMSB bag warns against using the included screws to mount the bracket to the Volkswagen dash; they are too long and will damage the speaker.
Woofer: The speaker features a rigid pulp composite cone woofer with a Santoprene surround. The woofer uses a Neodymium magnet to achieve its shallow depth, so it fits in tight factory locations.
Tweeters: Two Mylar tweeters are wired separately so this single speaker will accept a stereo input.
Dual Voice Coils: The woofer has dual voice coils, each wired with one of the tweeters. The stereo input is useful in older vehicles with a single speaker location in the dash or rear deck.
