About the Cobra Road Scout
A pair of road-friendly devices in one
A pair of road-friendly devices in one
The Cobra Road Scout combines two great technologies — radar detection and high-definition video recording — in one compact device to help keep you aware of your surroundings and on top of incoming threats. This radar detector/dash cam provides instant updates on radar bands near your vehicle and its unique display offers all the info you need at a glance, so you'll have evidence at the ready in case you're involved in an accident or other incident on the road.
The Road Scout shields you against X-, K-, and Ka-band radar signals, plus multiple laser threats. Digital signal processing lets this detector sniff out potential issues quickly. Cobra's advanced sensors look for the signature of each signal the Road Scout encounters, weeding out false alerts and getting the information to you more quickly. It also features Cobra's Traffic Signal Rejection and In-Vehicle Technology filters to keep false alerts triggered by roadside monitors and collision warning systems from nearby cars to a minimum.
The Road Scout's futuristic design features two large circular keypads with a circular display between them. The dash camera sits at the end of the device, next to the radar antenna array. The full-color LED display is customizable and easy to read. The easy-to-recognize icons and graphics really stand out on the detector's screen, allowing you to see the functionality of the detector and dash cam at the same time.
You'll also get voice alerts in English or Spanish so you can make timely decisions while keeping your eyes on the road. A rotary dial around the "Mark" button allows for quick adjustments to the Road Scout's volume.
HD dash camera
Cobra outfitted the Road Scout with a 1080p dash camera, boasting a Sony Exmor image sensor and an Ambarella A12 processor. It offers a 154º field of view to capture all the action nearby, along with enhanced night vision to keep the images from getting too dark. You can program the camera to record in continuous loops of 1-, 3-, or 5-minute lengths. It'll even let you add date, time, and location info to the videos, and you can capture the audio with the Road Scout's microphone. A built-in G-sensor locks the most recent video footage in case you're in an accident.
Cobra includes a 16GB microSD card with the Road Scout, and it's compatible with cards up to 64GB. An included micro-USB cable lets you transfer video content to your computer, where you can edit using Cobra's Drive HD software for computers.
Built-in Wi-Fi® capability
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows you to make wireless software updates, so you can keep your Cobra up-to-date without having to plug your detector into a computer. These updates occur automatically as warranted. You can also transfer dash cam video wirelessly to your phone via the Cobra Drive HD app. You need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network or vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot to take advantage of these features.
Cobra Drive HD app for video stuff
Cobra's free Drive HD app lets you get the most out of the Road Scout's dash cam. With the app on your phone, you can instantly access the Road Scout's dash cam content via a Wi-Fi connection. You can see what the camera's recording in real time, or transfer stored videos from the Road Scout to your phone for editing and sharing, whether it's with friends, the police, or your insurance company. You can also adjust the Road Scout's dash cam settings through the app.
Cobra also offers a free version of Drive HD for computers (Mac and Windows® operating systems only) via their website.
Roadside camera database
The Road Scout comes with a preloaded database of safety, red-light, and radar camera locations across North America, allowing the detector to warn you when you get near. You'll need a subscription and a Wi-Fi connection to update the Road Scout's database — update subscriptions are available through Cobra's website. There's no way to update the detector's database through a wired data transfer.
Just tap the large "Mark" button to tag locations along the road where the speed limit drops quickly, or where you might encounter heavy enforcement. The Road Scout will warn you when you approach them in the future. Or press the mute button at the location of a known false signal — the detector will remember the signal, muting the alert the next time you pass by. You'll hear an alert if another type of signal comes from the same location. The AutoLearn feature can even lock out false alarms after three encounters with them in the same location without you having to do anything at all.
The iRadar app keeps you in the loop
The Cobra iRadar app is a simple way to get your iPhone® or Android™ smartphone involved in reducing your stress while driving. The app combines your GPS location information with real-time reports from other Cobra and Escort radar users to keep you abreast of potential threats in your vicinity. You can also use the app to report your own sightings of enforcement or other potential travel hazards, which will then be instantly available to other Cobra and Escort users. The app also alerts you to major changes in the posted speed limit, so you can stay on top of the situation.
With built-in Bluetooth connectivity, you can simply pair the detector with your phone for instant wireless communication between the detector and the app — no additional hardware or cords needed. The Cobra iRadar app is free to download, but a subscription fee is required to use some aspects of the iRadar service — Cobra includes a 1-year trial of the iRadar Premium service with purchase of the Road Scout detector.
In addition to the 16GB SD card, Cobra includes a travel case, an EZ Mag windshield mount, and a 12-volt SmartCord in this package. The SmartCord features smart and coiled sections and allows you to see alerts when the detector's in fully dark mode, or to mute the detector without touching it.
Sorry, but we cannot ship radar detectors to Virginia or the District of Columbia.
