About the Focal Performance 130AS
Perfect sound. Discreet style. Premium construction. These are the standards that define Focal – and the reasons why listening to Focal speakers is an absolute pleasure. The Access line offers a marriage of performance and affordability, allowing you to experience the best in sound with a guilt-free conscience.
The whole package
Take Focal sound to the next level with this Access Series 130AS component system, which includes two 5-1/4" woofers, two TN43 tweeters, and two external crossovers. The DFS (dual fiberglass structure) woofer cone delivers precise mid-bass and midrange frequencies while offering deep, articulated bass. Coupled with a butyl rubber surround, the cone's all-weather durability ensures performance even in the hottest, most humid environments without distortion or warping.
The aluminum inverted dome shape does a better job of dispersing high frequencies than a traditional raised dome tweeter, creating a very wide soundstage with fine resolution and exciting dynamics. Enhance stereo imaging by installing these tweeters exactly where you need them with included flush-mount hardware.
This system's external crossovers ensure a seamless distribution of frequencies to the woofer and tweeter, for a totally natural sound. A 3-position tweeter level adjustment allows you to customize your high frequencies and get them just the way you like them.
Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Great speakers. The clarity and depth of detail is amazing with these speakers. I hear things in songs that were never apparent before, quite amazing. My only complaint is the punch of mid-bass isn't as strong as I'd like but the speakers aren't very large either. I have the speakers matched with a Focal 10" P25F sub and they sound brilliant together.
Pros: Clarity, soundstage, tweeters are amazing, build quality
Cons: Price, mid/low bass not strong

Sounds great running off an aftermarket head unit, but I have a suspicion it will sound amazing running off a 50watt amp!
Pros: Amazing sound quality Easy to install Quality built Crossover is easy to adjust
Cons: Doesn't come with speaker wire (not a big deal, just make sure you have some on hand)

Too small for my application, had to send back and get the 165's

These speakers are crystal clear. I can hear everything in my music with sharp detail with these. They seem to be constructed very well. The tweeters are very bright without being overwhelming and they're easy to balance in the mix thanks to the crossover controls. Not much for bass with the woofers but that's really not what they're for anyway.
Pros: Sound Build quality

After weeks of researching and recommendations, Crutchfield recommended these to me, and though skeptical I couldn't be happier! These speakers sound fantastic! Installation for my 1999 Ford explorer was fairly quick and simple except for the tweeters which needed a new place. These speakers have so much range and depth whether it be my favorites metal, rap, or edm.
Pros: Great mids and lows, and sounds great off aftermarket stereo. Very clear even when loud. Tweeters bring out notes and symbals you wouldn't hear otherwise.
Cons: Speakers didn't align with my 1999 Ford explorer speaker panel, so I had to make adjustments with a power tool.

I installed these speakers and played them at soft to moderate levels. After three years both woofers blew. Meanwhile the pioneers in the back are still going strong. The tweeters are great, but these woofers should last far longer for the price. Also the base on these is mostly non-existant. These are mid-range woofers only.
Pros: Tweeters are excellent
Cons: Woofers wear out and die. Bass is lame.

I heard the 165AS component set at a local shop alongside all the other Focal components and some JL Audio and Infinities. The AS series are the best sounding to me for a wide range of music. Since the 165 set wouldn't fit my car, I went with these. Not much difference really. The material they use on these gives an amazing clarity where even with metal symphonic songs you hear every note of every instrument crystal clear. These should be run with an amp, but they are sounding great even without it. I spent so much time carefully mounting the amp I haven't had a chance to hook it up yet.
Pros: Crystal clear clarity.
Cons: Need an amp and subwoofer to get the full experience (but that can be said about any component set)

You'll find larger speakers outside of the Focal brand which cannot hold their ground against a fine pair of these! My listening style is death metal and dubstep - most speakers I've tried were bright and metallic on the high end. What I didn't realize was how much distortion and extra noise were produced.... until I purchased Focals! Especially for you metalheads who enjoy the loud, try out these Focals in addition to (or better still, pair them with a pair of Focal rear speakers) and you'll still enjoy the loud! The difference is you will notice every fret played, including sounds you've never heard before! These babies are clean sounding as well, which is nice because I enjoy high volume (freeway/highway only).
Pros: Cleaner than other speakers priced similarly
Cons: Small size is deceptive!

Cone Material: The Dual Fiberglass Structure Membrane (DFS) is a light, rigid, woven glass fiber woofer cone. The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.
Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the higher frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.
Basket: The woofer features an ABS basket reinforced with 20% fiberglass.
Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.
Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum and dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.
Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters. Focal recommends flush mounting, but the included angled cup allows surface mounting at approximately 20° or approximately 40°. The top of the angle mount cup and the bottom of the flush mount cup can be combined to create another surface mount (non-angled).
Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality.
Tweeter Level: You can adjust the output level of the tweeter on the crossover to -6 dB, -3 dB, or 0 dB.
Crossover Slopes: The crossover uses 2nd order, 12 dB per octave low-pass and high-pass filters. The crossover frequency for both is 5,000 Hz.
Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.3" wide.
