What a Beryllium tweeter can do

Focal's unique 'm'-profile inverted dome tweeter employs Beryllium for its supremely smooth highs. Lighter and more rigid than both titanium and aluminum, this material brings the smoothness of a silk tweeter to your music, but with the accuracy and extended response usually associated with a high-quality metal tweeter. Brace yourself for a new level of detail from these tweeters.

Innovative woofer design

Using their proprietary 'W" sandwich cone, Focal maximizes the lightness, rigidity, and damping of this foam core woofer, laminated on both sides with thin sheets of glass fabric. Focal even varies the thickness of the foam core to ensure the absolute accuracy of the woofer's playback across the entire sonic spectrum. Their tuned mass damper surround minimizes breakup in the midrange to enhance already impressive playback.

The aluminum alloy basket uses an open back to cool the woofer's internal works and to prevent any trapped air from interfering with the cone's motion. Focal also includes an audiophile-grade external crossover for the smoothest possible transition between the tweeter and woofer, and gives you the option of powering each driver separately. With power handling up to 100 watts RMS, Focal gives you the tools you need to optimize this versatile speaker system.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Product Research

Features

Woofer Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting of a foam core laminated with glass fabric on both sides. The result of this full polymerization is a composite far more rigid than other cone material combinations of equal mass, while still maintaining the excellent damping characteristics of the foam core. The woofers have male quick slide wire terminals, 0.187" positive and 0.110" negative.

Beryllium Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted Beryllium dome, producing a broad sound stage. Beryllium is approximately seven times stiffer than titanium with inner damping characteristics similar to silk. Combined with its extreme light weight, these properties make Beryllium an excellent tweeter material. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil. Each tweeter's positive and negative wire terminals are 0.110" wide male quick slides.

Tweeter Mounting: A flush mounting cup is included with the tweeters (the tweeters are already mounted in the housing). Each housing is mounted using the single screw hole in the rear. In the same way the tweeters are mounted in the housings using four screws, they can be mounted without the housing using the same screw holes. (Useful if your space won't accommodate the size of the housing.) Once installed the tweeters do not swivel.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

w/o Flush Mount Housing With Flush Mount Housing
Mounting Height 0.355" 0.275"
Mounting Depth 0.551" 0.827"
Frame Length 2.542" 2.930"
Frame Width 2.269" 2.660"
Cutout Length 2.01" 2.74"
Cutout Width 1.78" 2.47"

Crossover Design: Focal includes bi-amp crossovers with this system, which is to say bi-amping is required, not optional. (The woofer and tweeter inputs could be shorted together, but that is not Focal's recommendation.) The crossover point is adjustable (2.5 kHz and 3.5 kHz), as is the tweeter output level (-3 dB and 0 dB), allowing you to compensate for the driver locations and the acoustic environment of the specific car. The high-pass slope is 18 dB/octave and the low-pass slope is 12 dB/octave, and the crossovers' set screw terminals accept bare wire up to 10-gauge.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 7.475"
  • Height: 2.065" (2.265" including screw heads)
  • Depth: 4.725"

Customer Q&A

8 questions already asked

Q
Does these require a 2 channel or 4 channel amp?
andy  Dec 06, 2023
1 answer
A
It would be necessary to use a 4-channel amplifier per Focal's recommendation. Although you could technically use a 2-channel and double the connection to each channel, but this would not provide the best sound quality.
zachary  Dec 06, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Can you run this component set active @ 4 ohm impedance or do you have to use crossovers ?
malik  Mar 01, 2022
1 answer
A
You will get the best performance from the Focal Utopia 165W-XP using the included crossovers.

Q
I was planning to use the JL Audio HD 600/4 which rates its power output at 150 watts per channel @ 1.5-4 ohms. How should I use this amp and speakers combination for optimal performance?
wendtman  Feb 02, 2022
2 answers
A
you will need to use all 4 channels for the speakers. the crossover is designed to be bi-amped. the 165wrc is the same speakers with a different crossover i believe.
kendra  Feb 17, 2022
A
The Focal Utopia 165W-XP must be bi-amped using a 4 channel amplifier. 2 channels to drive the tweeters and 2 channels to drive the woofers. When properly installed and driven by high quality amplification the soundstage, imaging, clarity and definition are absolutely stunning.
freddie  Feb 02, 2022
Q
Do you have to bi-amp? Can't you jumper the output from a 100 watt JL Amp to feed both woofer and tweeter? Don't to wasted expensive channels on the tweeter that requires less power anyway.
bryan  Oct 15, 2021
1 answer
A
These do need to be bi-amped. Focal includes jumpers when bi-amp was only an option and not a requirement. They must be bi-amped.
jason  Oct 19, 2021 (Staff)
Q
What is the difference between this and buying 6WM & tbm?
leo  May 12, 2020
1 answer
A
Identical drivers, but the 165W-XP includes the Elite Utopia passive crossover. The 6WM midbass drivers and TBM tweeters are designed for full active systems; (no passive crossover), a DSP, or electronic crossover divides the frequencies before amplification. All active systems sound less colored and cleaner.
scott  May 22, 2020
Q
So this bi amp crossover means you need to have a 4 channel amp at 100 watts each 100 to the woofers and 100 to the tweeter for a pair of components right?
jess  Feb 08, 2020
2 answers
A
I do not get that answer at all. bi-amping is an option where you could use multiple amp channels to power a single speaker, but why would you if you did not have an amp with extra channels that you hoped to use? If you have a really strong two channel amp like the Audison Due, it would be ideal to power the w-xp components with a passive crossover. If you are running active then your 4 channel amp would power each speaker, bi-amping has nothing to do with it. btw, in general, woofers will benefit from extra power far more likely than tweeters will.
douglas  Oct 18, 2020
A
That is correct and also keep in mind the 100 watts RMS needs to be the 2 ohm power output of the amp

Q
Whist is the BEST AMP To drive the 165W-XP Woofer & Tweeter kit?
john  Jan 26, 2020
1 answer
A
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.
