A bookshelf speaker par excellence

Whether your passion tends toward music or movies, Focal's Chorus 705 bookshelf speakers will give you the rich, dynamic sound you need to enjoy all of your entertainment sources to the fullest. The 705's compact, gently curved cabinet design makes it an attractive option for a stereo setup in smaller rooms, or as part of a multi-channel home theater system. The entire Chorus series borrows driver technologies developed by Focal for their sophisticated world-class speakers, giving you high-end performance at a more budget friendly price.

Advanced design for natural, high-definition sound

Chorus 700 series speakers boast Focal's latest 1" aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter. Inverting the dome optimizes the connection between the voice coil and the dome, maximizing efficiency and precision. Plus, the tweeter's new lightweight polyurethane micro-cellular foam suspension allows the dome to move more freely for lower distortion, greater accuracy, and smoother sound.

The speakers' tight, responsive bass and dynamic midrange come courtesy of Focal's 5" Polyglass woofers. These drivers are created by depositing a layer of hollow silica glass microbeads over a layer of cellulose pulp. This unique material combines the warm sound of cellulose fiber with the incredible strength of glass, for a stiff-yet-lightweight cone that responds rapidly with extremely low resonance. A butyl rubber surround helps stabilize cone movement and provides excellent long-term reliability. Tying the drivers together is Focal's OPC (Optimum Phase Crossover) crossover network for precise, natural, and stable imaging and soundstaging.

Focal Chorus series speaker

Stylish, vibration resistant cabinets

All Chorus speakers feature thick MDF cabinets with heavy internal bracing and non-parallel inner wall structure to resist performance-robbing vibrations. The cabinets have a traditional look that's softened by slightly curved front panels. An attractive woodgrain vinyl or textured leatherette/high-gloss black finish allows the Chorus speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

Built in-house for better quality and value

The speaker drivers in every Chorus speaker are built in-house at Focal's facilities in Saint-Etienne, France. Why is that important? Because it gives Focal complete control over every aspect of design, manufacture, and quality control — resulting a consistently superior, high-value product.

Great little speaker

These are were meant for companion speakers for Infinity Reference R253, but they perform so much better that I sold the latter. Highly recommended. The Focals are used with a Velodyne sub. Room dimension about 15x15ft/ 4.73m.

Pros: Vocals have the edge/spike we hear when listening to other people talk. Speakers are about 8ft/2.44m apart, sit on identical small tables. The sound stage is so far beyond abilities of the Infinities and noticeable improvement over bedroom system consisting of Epos M5i stand mounts.

Very Nice Bookshelf Speakers

Dunamis from Hawaii on 1/10/2016

The old. Onkyo Receiver, Bose 6.1 system that's 10 years old, still sounded good and was working well, buy It was out of date. No bluetooth, wifi, usb, etc... In with the New! Yamaha Aventage RX-A840 purchased from a different online retailer. Everything else is from Crutchfield. Cables are AudioQuest Pearl & Cinnamon HDMI. Speaker cables are AudioQuest Type 4 & Rocket 33 for speakers & Black Lab for Sub. SVS SB-1000 Sub (Scratch & Dent) Focal Chorus 705 Bookshelf Speakers & Focal Chorus 716 Floor Speakers. Center Channel Klipsch RP-440C. And all housed in a Rosewood 7ft x 9ft entertainment center with a 3 yr old LED Samsung 50 in TV. I probably spent $3K 10 yrs ago and I did not use AudioQuest cables. The old system was nice, but my ears have matured away from Bose since upgrading my car system to Focal, listening to Hi-Res music files with a DAC, and having high end Headphones and Earbuds. I understand there are much nicer systems for a lot more money. But, for the money, I am a very happy customer. I would have loved to use a Focal Center, but I needed a center that could hold my TV, and Klipsch had one. The sound is amazingly Smooth, balanced, and powerful! Everything blends well despite being a front facing 5.1 system. I get Great separation on movies, music, and TV programs. Yamaha does an excellent job of processing and I don't miss having speakers behind or beside me. Very clean Highs, Mids & Lows singing in perfect harmony...

Pros: Fit & Finish! Build Quality! Warranty!

Cons: None

Excellent Sound in a Small Package

Tim from Florida on 11/8/2015

I'm using these speakers, placed on bookshelves, on either side of my TV. They are being used to play music (Pandora and CD's) and movie audio through my Sony receiver. I'm no audiophile, testament to the fact they are replacing my 40 year old Sansui floor-standers from college. My decision was between these and the Bowers and Wilkins 686 S2 at a local retailer, as I required small speakers that had to be sealed or front-ported due to the bookshelf placement. What a difference 40 years of technology makes! The sound from these are clear and crisp and the bass is punchy, but not overwhelming. The bass ability was a concern which such a small speaker, and these are great. I've gotten out of the habit of listening to music, but with quality of the sound coming from these, music is enjoyable again. What a pleasure. I wanted to go cheap and get bookshelves under $200, but after listening to speakers in that price range, I knew they wouldn't do. These, on sale, are a good buy and I don't regret spending the extra money.

Pros: Crisp treble and unexpectedly solid bass response.

Cons: None

Shopping with Crutchfield is a really smooth and nice experience, delivery on time with great product. After 2-3 weeks "burn in", the Focal Chorus 705 turns to be better and better, clarity and beautiful treble. I should also point it out if they are used as front bookshelf speakers, the bass is nice but not powerful enough. I use them for back surrounding so it serves the purpose perfectly fine!

Surprising Value

Lee from Philadelphia, PA on 10/28/2013

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Just received these and setup on a desktop to be used as computer speakers, powered by a Sony ES Receiver, sourced from a PCI HT Omega Claro halo XT sound card. My immediate reaction is WOW! these French monitors are surprisingly detailed, articulate and engaging. Despite sitting close, the sound stage is wide but also strikingly deep. Low end is solid (although I'll probably be adding a sub as a personal preference) the front-port allows for flexible placement and good bass even when placed in a more confined space. The mid-range is clear and not overly forward or hidden. But, it's the high-end that really shines on these Focal's. You get an immediate sense of airy-ness and open space. Transients are clear and extremely detailed. Out of the box, some may regard the high-end as a bit bright or forward, but I'm hoping with some break-in time that will mellow out. Either way the high-end of this monitor is the star of the show. Cabinet build quality is solid, what you would expect from a speaker $50 to $100 more expensive. This gloss black & leather version is very classy. Visually stunning on any desktop or pair of stands. Bottom line, bookshelf speakers at this price have no right to sound this good. Building these by hand at Focal's factory in France has paid off! Some of the other speakers I have auditioned: Cambridge Audio S30, Audioengine P4, NHT Absolute Zero, Monitor Audio Silver RX1, Dynaudio Excite X12 ... these Focal's beat them all (IMHO of course!)

Pros: High-end is exquisite, great overall frequency response, huge sound stage, beautiful finish for the price.

Cons: No feet or isolation on the bottom, single terminal port (not bi-wireable), front grille has mounting pegs & holes (not magnetic like some higher end speakers)

Product Research

2-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker: The Focal Chorus 705 bookshelf loudspeaker employs a 2-way design which combines a 1" tweeter and a 5" cone woofer. The 1" aluminum/magnesium inverted-dome tweeter (TNV2) features a new Poron suspension material that softens the audio performance and provides smoother sound. The 5" polyglass woofer provides dynamic midrange and deep midbass.

TNV2 Tweeter w/ Poron Suspension: The Focal Chorus 705 features a single 1" TNV2 inverted-dome tweeter made of aluminum and magnesium alloy. The inverted-dome technology allows optimal energy transfer and wide dispersion. The aluminum/magnesium makeup guarantees exception performance in terms of stiffness and damping, thus ensuring a subtle blend of softness and dynamics. Performance of the TNV2 tweeter is enhanced by its new Poron suspension material. Poron is a polyurethane micro-cellular foam which has a porous open-cell structure. This memory foam is very light which means that the suspension will not become damaged or compressed with time. It is an essential element of the TNV2 tweeter as the suspension allows the dome to move freely. Its uniform and constant physical properties ensure excellent stability and linearity, along with extreme accuracy and distortion-free sound. The result is a sound which is soft and precise and which offers improved harmonics richness and a more precise soundstage.

Polyglass Cone Woofer: The Focal Chorus 705 features one 5" polyglass woofer. The Polyglass cone woofer has been a Focal tradition for the last 30 years. This cellulose fiber cone woofer offers renowned lightness and damping characteristics. But its Focal's special surface treatment of silica micro-balls which gives the woofer a huge increase in rigidity for a negligible increase in mass. The definition and dynamic capacity of this cone, when combined with a very powerful magnet, generate a very fine reproduction, with an exceptionally rich midrange/midbass.

Optimum Phase Crossover (OPC): The Focal Chorus 705 bookshelf loudspeaker utilizes an Optimum Phase Crossover (OPC) to seamlessly blend the audio output of the tweeter and midrange/midbass driver for a precise, natural, and stable soundstage and image.

Solid MDF Cabinet: The Focal Chorus 705 bookshelf loudspeaker features a contemporary designed cabinet with high-gloss lacquer finished sides and a leatherette baffle, back, and top. The cabinet uses solid MDF construction (up to 1" thick), internal bracing, and a non-parallel inner wall structure to reduce internal resonance for less coloration. This bass reflex type cabinet uses an aerodynamic front port for greater efficiency and to reduce distortion of the bass. The Focal Chorus 705 bookshelf loudspeaker is available in a Black, Rosewood, or Walnut finish. A detachable black cloth grille is also included.

Binding Posts: The Chorus 705 is fitted with a pair of binding posts that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The binding posts are color-coded for easy identification between positive (red) and negative (black).

Applications: The Chorus 705 loudspeaker has been engineered to work with stereo systems, as well as with home theater systems. The Chorus 705 delivers the most faithful sound reproduction, whether you are listening to a music or movie soundtrack. Suitable for rooms up to 160 sq/ft.

Mounting Options: The Chorus S 700 stand (091STND700, sold separately) is 24.125" high and specifically designed to raise and enhance the Chorus 705 bookshelf speaker. The speaker attaches to the stand using a screw system that guarantees the stability of the system. The Chorus S 700 stand is constructed of MDF and feature a black satin finish. The Chorus 705 bookshelf speaker also has a rear-panel keyhole slot that lets you easily wall mount the speaker (mounting screws not supplied). Or, you can use the optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) to wall mount the speaker.
