About the Focal Chorus 706
A perfect blend of performance, size, and value
A perfect blend of performance, size, and value
If you prefer your sound spacious, natural, and balanced, check out Focal's Chorus 706 bookshelf speakers. Their surprisingly powerful bass and smooth, detailed highs are just right for savoring your music in a small-to-medium sized room, and they make excellent front-channel home theater speakers. The entire Chorus lineup borrows driver technologies developed by Focal for their sophisticated world-class speakers, giving you high-end performance at a more budget friendly price.
Advanced design for natural, high-definition sound
Chorus 700 series speakers boast Focal's latest 1" aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter. Inverting the dome optimizes the connection between the voice coil and the dome, maximizing efficiency and precision. Plus, the tweeter's new lightweight polyurethane micro-cellular foam suspension allows the dome to move more freely for lower distortion, greater accuracy, and smoother sound.
The speakers' tight, responsive bass and dynamic midrange come courtesy of Focal's 6-1/2" Polyglass woofers. These drivers are created by depositing a layer of hollow silica glass microbeads over a layer of cellulose pulp. This unique material combines the warm sound of cellulose fiber with the incredible strength of glass, for a stiff-yet-lightweight cone that responds rapidly with extremely low resonance. A butyl rubber surround helps stabilize cone movement and provides excellent long-term reliability. Tying the drivers together is Focal's OPC (Optimum Phase Crossover) crossover network for precise, natural, and stable imaging and soundstaging.
Stylish, vibration resistant cabinets
All Chorus speakers feature thick MDF cabinets with heavy internal bracing and non-parallel inner wall structure to resist performance-robbing vibrations. The cabinets have a traditional look that's softened by slightly curved front panels. An attractive woodgrain vinyl or textured leatherette/high-gloss black finish allows the Chorus speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.
Built in-house for better quality and value
The speaker drivers in every Chorus speaker are built in-house at Focal's facilities in Saint-Etienne, France. Why is that important? Because it gives Focal complete control over every aspect of design, manufacture, and quality control — resulting a consistently superior, high-value product.

Focal Chorus 706 reviews
Excellent speaker with remarkably good sound. One needs to be careful in removing the thin tough plastic film covering the high gloss black sides of the speakers. It is not obvious that the film is even on the speakers. I recommend starting the removal at a bottom rear corner. Once you start the removal pealing off the rest of the film it is easy. With the port at the front the speakers can be placed close to a rear wall without detrimental effects on the sound. Wonderful service from Crutchfield as always. I have been purchasing products from Crutchfield since about 1980 and have never been disappointed with the great service.
Pros: Very high quality speakers with smooth frequency response throughout its range. Good bass response for its size. Once the protective film is removed from the cabinet sides the finish looks very good.

These speakers sounded great straight out of the box! After the recommended 20 hour break in, they sound even better. With the 6.5" main driver, they still don't have to low end punch of larger speakers, but I added in my existing Klipsch R-10 SWi wireless sub and that added more than enough low end (later I'll add a Focal Sub). I've run opera, classical, classic rock, metal, grunge, jazz and blues through these things and they reproduce all genres wonderfully! These could well be the best speakers I've ever owned. I still use my 1989 vintage Bose 601 Series IIIs and they still rock - but I may finally sell them since adding these Focals and a used pair of B & W CDM2s to my collection (2 separate listening rooms). I still need to replace my Klipsch center, satellites and sub with Focal - but those will come with time - and money! None of them are inexpensive, but you certainly get what you pay for!
Pros: Crisp highs and mids and the black piano gloss is classic.
Cons: Lack of low end requires a subwoofer to bring the low freqs out.

Got these as an upgrade to my early '90s B&W DM302 bookshelf speakers. My system is an NAD M51 DAC which I'm running as a preamp, into a McIntosh MC7100 II, in a room that is roughly 12'x15'x15'; I only use this system to listen to high-resolution music, no film or games. Right off the bat, the Focal 706 has the lushest and most refined midrange I have heard to date. Subtle details and production decisions are brought to the foreground. Live concert tapes are startlingly realistic; ambient, drone, rock (especially progressive) and jazz truly shine on these speakers. They're subtly on the slower side for transients in electronica and hip hop; if those are your preferred genres these will still do the job but I'd consider something with a sharper transient response. Bass response is better than what I expected from speakers this size; I can still audibly hear fundamentals in songs below the rated 55 Hz, however they are attenuated - I will be adding a subwoofer to make up for this. The dynamic range is very large, as a production guy I hear compressors kick in with the subtlest details, making me appreciate a good mixing/mastering job. I wish the treble response were more pronounced; it's not buried and is still there, and it extends quite nicely into the top end with a decent bit of detail, however it is significantly more laid back than the midrange, and I often find myself reaching for an equalizer to lift the treble a few dB for my tastes. Overall, a very go
Pros: The lushest midrange I have ever heard; phenomenal soundstage that disappears between the speakers and extends to the full height of my room; incredible dynamic range
Cons: Treble is a bit laid back; a bit quieter than other speakers with the same sensitivity; low end would benefit from a subwoofer (to be expected from bookshelf speakers at this price)

Significantly brighter with better resolution of mids and highs than the Elac Debut B6, which I also own. Very wide soundstage. Very happy with purchase. Sound gets better with 20-30 hours of break in.

Straight out of box they are open and lively. Almost eerie 3d presentation. Sounds protrude what seems some distance behind cabinets, in front as well as outside. Bright and clarity(!!) but not excessive bright like many British monitors. Highly recommend.
Pros: Outstanding product at really good price. Made in FRANCE not China.

Good for music and home theater. Efficient (90db) and balanced sounding with an excellent top end and very good bass for its size. I highly recommend. Limited space had me exchange Polk towers for these bookshelf speakers as the front speakers in a home theater setup. They sound great. I compared them to my big Magneplanars before installing them in the home theater room, and I was very impressed with their sound quality when driven from top-end equipment and top-end source material.
Pros: Efficiency, tonal balance, and accuracy. Subwoofer is not essential with these speakers. Nice punch. They appear to be excellent for both home theater and music.
Cons: Mounting on side requires rubber spacers because design assumes vertical placement. Speaker is slightly wider at front than back.

Beautifully speakers. I think they are very good sound. We paid a lot for these speakers. One drawback to purchasing hi fi equipment over the net is that you do not get the benefits of in-store demo experiences. One of the primary reasons we purchased the Focals I will say though is because I wanted a USA made speaker which unless you're buying the very high end Klipsch speakers, is not a known commodity any longer. The days of ADS, Boston Acoustics, etc. all being manufactured in my Massachusetts backyard are gone. That being said, I get a different kind of personal sense of satisfaction knowing that Focal is not made in China. I wish they were solid real wood veneer, rather than vinyl covered MDF. In fact, I'd pay a little more for a hand rubbed real wood case. In any event, they're nice speakers, have beautiful sound, they're attractive and the speaker connections are very nice. I will probably add speaker stands as well at some point, and see the benefits of having the speakers at ear level.
Pros: Nice sound. Nice speaker connectivity points. Solid
Cons: Vinyl covered MDF case.

I've had these speakers for about a year now. I have to admit I don't usually review products but these are The Best Speakers I have yet owned. Previously ran Paradigm Titans, PSB Mini, Altec Lansings I bought used from a movie theater, Bose 301.... Nothing came even close. Currently powered off a Yamaha RX-A1040 with an 8" Velodyne subwoofer. The crystal clear sound quality with perfect highs that are exactly bright enough and solid mid range somehow excel with every genre I listen to. From Beethoven to Coltrane to AC/DC. Couldn't be happier.

Right out of the box they sound fantastic. Will be even better after the break in period. Beautiful speaker finish. The sides come wrapped with a very tightly stretched clear plastic to protect them during shipping. Before I pulled off the plastic they looked almost as good as my NHT Super Ones. After removing the plastic, WOW , talk about quality craftsmanship. Sweet. The nicest binding posts I've ever had the pleasure to hook speaker wire to. For the short time I've listened to them more bass than I expected. Very happy with these Focal Chorus 706 speakers. Also, Crutchfield shipped them to me free in 2 days. Excellent. Made my first order with them over 40 years ago. Glad to see they are still in business. Good prices and the best customer service.
Cons: Not a one.

The pair of B&O monitors that made up the right and left channels of my media system reached the end of their life after 20 plus years - a hard act to follow. After some research I discovered the Focal speaker line and took a chance buying a pair of Focal 706s. In short, I'm very impressed by the sound range and clarity and highly recommend this mid-range speaker.. The folks at Crutchfeld were also very knowledgeable and answered all my qualifying questions. It was the way all on line transaction should be ... 5 stars for their sales support and fast delivery.
Pros: Great speakers for the money. Good build and sound..

2-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker: The Focal Chorus 706 bookshelf loudspeaker employs a 2-way design which combines a 1" tweeter and a 6.5" cone woofer. The 1" aluminum/magnesium inverted-dome tweeter (TNV2) features a new Poron suspension material that softens the audio performance and provides smoother sound. The 6.5" polyglass woofer provides dynamic midrange and deep midbass.
TNV2 Tweeter w/ Poron Suspension: The Focal Chorus 706 features a single 1" TNV2 inverted-dome tweeter made of aluminum and magnesium alloy. The inverted-dome technology allows optimal energy transfer and wide dispersion. The aluminum/magnesium makeup guarantees exception performance in terms of stiffness and damping, thus ensuring a subtle blend of softness and dynamics. Performance of the TNV2 tweeter is enhanced by its new Poron suspension material. Poron is a polyurethane micro-cellular foam which has a porous open-cell structure. This memory foam is very light which means that the suspension will not become damaged or compressed with time. It is an essential element of the TNV2 tweeter as the suspension allows the dome to move freely. Its uniform and constant physical properties ensure excellent stability and linearity, along with extreme accuracy and distortion-free sound. The result is a sound which is soft and precise and which offers improved harmonics richness and a more precise soundstage.
Polyglass Cone Woofer: The Focal Chorus 706 features one 6.5" polyglass woofer. The Polyglass cone woofer has been a Focal tradition for the last 30 years. This cellulose fiber cone woofer offers renowned lightness and damping characteristics. But its Focal's special surface treatment of silica micro-balls which gives the woofer a huge increase in rigidity for a negligible increase in mass. The definition and dynamic capacity of this cone, when combined with a very powerful magnet, generate a very fine reproduction, with an exceptionally rich midrange/midbass.
Optimum Phase Crossover (OPC): The Focal Chorus 706 bookshelf loudspeaker utilizes an Optimum Phase Crossover (OPC) to seamlessly blend the audio output of the tweeter and midrange/midbass driver for a precise, natural, and stable soundstage and image.
Solid MDF Cabinet: The Focal Chorus 706 bookshelf loudspeaker features a contemporary designed cabinet with high-gloss lacquer finished sides and a leatherette baffle, back, and top. The cabinet uses solid MDF construction (up to 1" thick), internal bracing, and a non-parallel inner wall structure to reduce internal resonance for less coloration. This bass reflex type cabinet uses an aerodynamic front port for greater efficiency and to reduce distortion of the bass. The Focal Chorus 706 bookshelf loudspeaker is available in a Black, Rosewood, or Walnut finish. A detachable black cloth grille is also included.
Binding Posts: The Chorus 706 is fitted with a pair of binding posts that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The binding posts are color-coded for easy identification between positive (red) and negative (black).
Applications: The Chorus 706 loudspeaker has been engineered to work with stereo systems, as well as with home theater systems. The Chorus 706 delivers the most faithful sound reproduction, whether you are listening to a music or movie soundtrack. Suitable for rooms up to 215 sq/ft.
Mounting Options: The Chorus S 700 stand (091STND700, sold separately) is 24.125" high and specifically designed to raise and enhance the Chorus 706 bookshelf speaker. The speaker attaches to the stand using a screw system that guarantees the stability of the system. The Chorus S 700 stand is constructed of MDF and feature a black satin finish. The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speaker.
