Meticulous design and construction

Handmade in France, the Elite K2 Power Series ES 100K 4" component speaker system is the culmination of Focal's passion for perfect sound, exceptional standards, and technological advances. Focal's sound gurus engaged in intensive listening sessions designing this line of speakers so that you hear uncanny realism, sweeping dynamics, and breathtaking depth in your music.

A classic woofer with a new twist

The ES 100K uses Focal's classic "W" sandwich cone woofer design to reproduce your audio with incredible accuracy. The nimble Kevlar and glass-fiber woofers demonstrate the control needed to play delicate classical passages, yet they'll handle the power needed to drive your bass-heavy tracks with authority. Focal adds a new Tuned Mass Damper (TMD®) rubber surround to the woofer design which minimizes harmonic distortion for the cleanest midrange possible.

A redesigned tweeter

The separate 13/16" tweeter employs a one-of-a-kind "M"-shaped inverted aramid fiber dome design that does a better job than ever of dispersing the highs with remarkable precision, all the way up to 22,000 Hz. The K2 Power crossovers use hand-made components developed by Focal to deliver an ideal blend of the highs and lows for a dynamic stereo image. Three levels of tweeter control let you dial in the sound to your car's environment.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Clean, big sound

2008 BMW 3 Series

These speakers sound great and are a huge upgrade from the stock speakers. I have a 2008 3 series running a JL XD600/6v1 amp. The only tricky bit of install was that there are a different number of screws on the mids than the stock. It was easy enough to screw them into the door fiberboard. The tweeters install wasnt hard but I used some glue to fully secure them. Given the limited number of speakers in this car, these are a great upgrade in the overall sound. I had these previously in both the rear deck and front doors since 2008. One crossfade died and I blew out a tweeter and mid in the front after 10 years (also potentially related to a rain storm and wet door) so I felt confident buying these again. The speakers in the rear deck that are 10 years old still sound great. Now with the front working again the whole ensemble sounds great.

Pros: 60 Watts RMS is plenty loud with the JL XD600/6v1 The mids and highs are clean Everything fits within the previous spaces so you cannot tell there are aftermarket speakers until they turn on The sound quality improvement is night and day They seem to put up with a lot of abuse and high volumes for many years

Cons: Installation of the filter in the door isnt hard but it isn't the most secure location. The number of screws for the mid is different than stock You have to break off the tweeter plastic rim to get it to fit into the old tweeter location

Benchmark 4" and Tweeter Combination

Geoffrey from Phoenix, AZ on 4/24/2017

1996 Porsche 911

I do not have a whole lot of time with these speakers yet to tune them with their crossovers, but for a 4" and tweeter combination it seems about as good as it can be. I will be expanding the power to the speakers soon as well. When installed in the rear speaker positions (1996 Porsche 993 Targa), they dominate the Hifi equipped car with a much bigger sound. The tweeter is a little on the bright side, but I have them aimed forward with the provided, installed cup from Focal. They are also currently set to +3, and could use some adjustment. These replace the stock 4x6 rear speakers. The quality is second to none. Aesthetically pleasing.

Pros: Big, precise sound compared to 4x6 speakers. Quality. Handsome and befitting of a classic car for the music lover with the ability to handle quite a bit of power (60W).

Cons: Expensive.

Clear and crisp

A great component speaker in a 4" package. The tweeters are simple to mount although + and - are not indicated anywhere. The crossovers keep the speakers distortion free.

Pros: 4", component with crossovers, great sound, easy to mount tweeters, compact.

Cons: Instructions could be better.

Product Research

K2 Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer. This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent damping characteristics.

Surround: Focal's patented butyl rubber TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) surround helps control unwanted resonances, providing a clean and neutral midrange with very low harmonic distortion.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Neodymium Magnets: Each woofer uses a Neodymium magnet, which has a magnetic field strength similar to a ceramic magnet approximately 10 times its size, reducing the size and weight of the speaker.

Inverted Dome: The "M" profile, Aramid fiber, inverted dome tweeter is designed to increase precision at very high frequencies. The push-pull motor also damps acoustic resonances on the back of the membrane and extends the low end of the frequency response.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters, or the trim ring can be removed and the protective washers added for mounting in a factory tweeter location. The included angled cup allows surface mounting at one of two angles; approximately 60° and approximately 40°.

Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality. Thermal camera imaging is used to optimize component power dissipation, improve reliability, and lower temperature.

Slope: The crossover uses 2nd order, 12 dB/octave low-pass and high-pass filters. The crossover point for both is 3,500 Hz.

Tweeter Level: A three position switch on the crossover allows you to adjust the output level of the tweeter to -3 dB, 0 dB, or +3 dB.

Band-Pass: Another switch (on/off) on the crossover allows you to engage a 12 dB/octave high-pass crossover to remove the lower bass from the 4" woofer.

Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
Because, they are suppose to be, some of the best speakers in the world. [ Dewayne  Jul 30, 2016 ]

4 questions already asked

How do you open the crossover to set the high pass filter? There doesn't seem to be any screws to open up the plastic covering...

Can you bi-amp these? ie drive the 4 inch and 1 inch separately using a 4ch amp
[ James  May 23, 2018 ]

Yes. The components are bi-ampable. You can view the manual which shows the wiring configuration by clicking the link for it under the "What's in the Box" heading on the speaker's main webpage. I hope that helps. My bio:

would it be wise or feasible to add a 6.5" woofer to the Focal Es100 k 4" components in order to create a 3 way system? I already have the Es 100k 4" and would like to purchase the 6.5" woofers to complement the system. if so, which woofers would I use, and would my current crossovers work in that application? For example, could I go semi active? i.e.) Es100 k 4" with the current tweeter and passive crossover then active with the 6.5" woofers added to the system? Does this make sense.... or should I get a whole new component set with the 6.5"'s included?
[ James  Nov 29, 2016 ]
2 answers
Another option...continue to run the ES100K set as-is (2-way with the provided passive crossover). Introduce an electronic crossover and run a set of Focal 6.5" midbass drivers (they may be available from some dealers as a Focal 165 Midrange Kit) off another 2 channels of amplifier power.
[ 03 330 Ci  Dec 14, 2017 ]
The crossovers provided with the ES 100K do not offer a provision for adding a subwoofer. You can still add a sub to your system; you'll just need a separate amp to power it. You can use the low-pass crossovers provided in your aftermarket stereo or the sub amp to ensure the sub(s) only receive the bass frequencies.
