About the Focal IC 690TOY

Alexander H.
Focal IC 690TOY

Focal's design ensures these speakers will be a perfect fit with compatible Toyota vehicles.

Toyota practicality

You were already thinking smart when you bought your Toyota, but now Focal gives you the smart way to upgrade your factory sound. These IC 690TOY coaxial speakers fit perfectly into the factory speaker locations in select Toyota Prius, Camry, Tacoma, Tundra, and FJ Cruiser models. Focal has engineered a more compact tweeter to ensure a fit, along with built-in crossovers that maximize speaker performance in your Toyota. The package contains almost everything you need for a quick, easy installation, including harnesses that connect directly to your Toyota's factory plugs.

Signature Focal sound

These highly efficient speakers will make the most out of your factory radio's power output, giving you precise sound, free of false coloration. They also handle up to 75 watts RMS, so they will soar with some serious power from an outboard amplifier. Your music's midrange will gain presence and depth, thanks to the articulate response of the light woven fiberglass woofer cone, the same used in Focal's premium Access speaker line.

Focal also puts their signature inverted dome tweeter design to work here to give you sparkling highs. The inverted shape of the aluminum dome does a better job of dispersing high frequencies than a traditional raised dome tweeter and creates a very wide soundstage with stellar resolution and exciting dynamics. The built-in crossover ensures a perfectly balanced sound.

Grilles are not included; the factory grilles should be suitable for most applications.

I'm pretty sure there not. You want to purchase the IS 165TOY in addition for the tweeters and the rears. You will not be disappointed.

How is the sound improvement and ease of installation in 2015 Sienna, non-JBL?

I don't know about installation in a Sienna. I installed them in my 2012 Tundra. Crutchfield supplies you with execellent step by step instructions. Installation should not be difficult. The sound improvement was better than I had expected. You can tell the difference when you take out the OEM speakers. The magnet size will make you laugh on the stock speakers compared to the Focal's magnets. I think you will be more than pleased with them.

I can't answer directly, but can indirectly. I own both a Sienna with a JBL and a Tundra without. The Focal set was put in the Tundra and can say that it is a definite improvement over the non-JBL speakers. I would put them on-par with, or better than, the JBL speakers in the Sienna. Installation in the Tundra was as factory would be.

Sorry, think I had something backwards on my first answer -- I should have said: if a button stays on the door frame, pull it off the door and replace onto the panel before reinstalling the panel. When reinstalling the panel you want to hang it on the lip in the window area (make sure it slips down and properly lines up) and then push the panel back on to the door frame, one button at a time. Suggest you start at the top of each side and work down, leaving the bottom edge for last - basically the reverse of initial removal.

Installed these in my 2014 SE. Very meaty magnets and beautifully finished. Noticeable improvement in sound quality, especially at volume, but limitations of dash tweeters and center speaker are evident. When removing door panels, use plastic panel remover pry tools (Harbor Freight). Start along bottom edge, get tool in between panel and door frame and carefully pry. May need a second, larger tool to get enough leverage. I had to stick my hand in the gap and pull back to start the process. Panel will eventually pop off the plastic retainer buttons one at a time. Force required for first button to pop is significant but panels are very strong/well designed. Work your way around bottom and then sides of the panel, prying/pulling it out and off one button at a time (I think there are 6 or 8 buttons). If a button comes off in the panel (most didn't), remove from panel and reinstall on door before remounting panel. When remounting, note that top edge of panel first needs to drop down onto the metal lip of door near window channel. Make sure lip is engaged and panel slips down on it before pushing remaining sides onto the mounting buttons. Besides that, I ran in to two other problems: 1) removing/remounting sail panel over mirror mounts was tricky. Broke one of the flimsy mounting tabs. Can't recall best way to handle but be gentle. 2) When slipping door handle mechanism back into panel for reinstallation, make sure the two cable ends are properly seated in their plastic retainers. If they pop out, door won't open from inside. I didn't check that, got the whole job finished and found out on that road trip, a long ways from home, the wife couldn't get of her door - oops! Sorry honey. Had to pull it all apart again after finding a Harbor Freight. Overall, I give these a 5 on sound quality, a 4 on ease of self-installation and a 3 on value - wish they were about $100 cheaper, but if you want immediate sound improvement for not much effort, I'd say go for it.

I too had the non - JBL premium sound system in my 2015 Tacoma. The OEM speakers did O.K., but the Focals have more solid bass and the tweeter is a better performer. The original speakers had a paper cone woofer with a tiny magnet and whizzer cone within, combined with paper cone tweeters mounted high in the doors, (kind of cheap). I originally bought some JBL's two ways with a mounting kit, but the kit didn't fit correctly, so Crutchfield recommended the Focals at a higher cost, and they fit perfectly with no installation adapter. the Focals are expensive, fit perfectly, sound better, and made of quality materials.

I installed my set on a 2016 4runner NON JBL with " premium package" radio per TOYOTA, the sound is great no amp needed. Installation was easy plug and play no mods everything you need is in the box.

    Q
These are supposed to be compatible with Prius gen 3 with JBL system. My understanding is that the signal to the doors has already filtered the high frequencies so I suspect the tweeter on these speakers would not function and the sonic improvement will be minimal. Any experience with Prius with JBL?

In the factory JBL systems where these speakers are recommended, the stock woofers get a full-range signal so, the Focals will produce the full-range of frequencies when connected to the stock wiring and amplification. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

do the new speakers plug into the same wiring harness as the stock speaker. If not what do you have to do?

No, not directly, but a conversion connector is provided. I think it was about 2 or 3 inches long and connects to the OEM plug, then slips onto the Focal spades. They do make it true plug-n-play so don't misplace them (like I did) when you open the box.

I have a 2014 Tacoma without the JBL upgrade. Will I need an amplifier to push these speakers?

My 2014 non-JBL Sienna can't overdrive these but they will play quite loud with stock power and are very clean. Unfortunately, the low quality rears and the dash tweeters and center speaker become evident. I turn off the OEM rears and suffer with the OEM dash stuff. Won't spend the money on an amp until the other speakers get addressed. Unfortunately no plug-n-play options available for those locations.

I replaced my 2015 Tacoma stock woofers with the Focal IC 690TOY. I do not have the JBL upgrade either. I did not add an amp and did not remove or replace the stock tweeter or those terrible speakers in the roof. After about 1 week of break in the speakers sounded much better than before. The stock speakers are very low quality. The Focals are good speakers so I'm sure they would sound even better with an amp. What I don't know is what effect the head unit has on the frequencies sent to each speaker. I read that they mix some out so you won't blow their low quality speakers. (Mix is not the right terminology) I think there is a way to return the head output to original sound before you amplify it.

I tried it on my 2012 tundra non JBL also and it's way more better than the OEM speakers. My plan was to add an amplifier but after listening to this speaker, I decided not to because it's already pretty good. I actually installed another set on my trailer and it does not need an amplifier.
    cornelios  Mar 19, 2016

My 2015 Tacoma has the same OEM radio. I installed these pricey speakers because the JBL's with adapters fell apart, I mean the adapters literally shattered. But the Focals sound great and fit perfectly. I'm 60 years old and don't care for the loud thump, thump, thump with an external amplifier. These Focals sound crisp, much better than the stock tweeters. I did add a self powered 8" Bazooka behind the drivers seat for a little more punch at times. So these Focal speakers will run with the stock radio just fine.

I put these in my 2012 Tundra w/o JBL and no additional amplifier. They sound great. Will you need an amplifier for these speaker? My opinion is: No, you don't need one.
    chad  Mar 18, 2016

These are meant as a upgrade to the factory speakers. So frequency and power levels should be compatible with the factory head unit. Pricey but worth it for the better sound and plug and play install.
    michael  Mar 18, 2016

I used these to replace the OEM joke speakers in my 2010 FJ Cruiser without adding an amp. My FJ had their top of the line FJammer head unit driving 9 speakers with what I think is just a Toyota branded JBL head unit. All in all very happy with this speaker upgrade without adding an amp.
