About the Focal Integration ISS 165

John Pollard

Audiophile-grade engineering

Focal applies the same technology they use in their studio and audiophile-grade home systems to their Integration line of car speakers. The Integration ISS 165 component system includes 6-1/2" woofers with cones made from Polyglass, a material that combines the warm sound of cellulose with the strength of glass, so they'll play accurately with no added resonances.

Focal ISS 130 5-1/4" 2 way Component Speakers

You can use this angled tweeter mount to improve high-frequency dispersion in problem vehicles.

Adjustable tweeter

Each separate Integration processed aluminum inverted dome tweeter features a built-in phase plug and wave guide, which act together to increase the power of high-frequency notes and improve the stereo soundstage. Focal includes a low-profile surface mount and an angled mount so you can set up the tweeter for the best possible imaging in your vehicle.

Built-in crossover networks

The crossover networks are built-in, so you don't have those extra boxes to install. Low-profile Integration speakers allow you to put Focal sound quality and construction into your vehicle, so you can enjoy a dramatic jump in performance over your old speakers. Grilles are not included; factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations

Woofer grilles are not included; the factory grilles should be suitable for most applications..

Woofer

Polyglass Cone: The woofer cone has a cellulose pulp base and is coated with a uniform deposit of hollow glass microballs. The addition of the Polyglass layer significantly increases the cone's rigidity without adding much weight. This combination takes advantage of the accuracy and neutrality of the hard outer surface, but maintains the superior damping characteristics of the cellulose pulp.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Size Classification Note: Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6-3/4", while some manufacturers, including Focal, call it a 6-1/2". Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Crossovers: The included 7" woofer wires have integrated crossovers. The woofer ends of the wires have female quick-slides that easily connect to the woofer terminals.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeters include two types of surface mount housings, one low profile and one angled:

Flush Mount Low Profile Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.3" 0.894" 1.933"
Mounting Depth 0.55" 0.875" (screw depth) 0.875" (screw depth)
Frame Diameter 1.871" 1.88" N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.67" N/A N/A
Width N/A N/A 1.895"
Surface Depth N/A N/A 2.839"

Crossovers: The included 19" tweeter wires have integrated crossovers. The tweeter ends of the wires have quick-slide terminals that easily connect to the wires soldered to the tweeters. The input end of each wire has three leads, a negative and two positives. The positive leads are labeled Car and Display, with a lower output level from the Car lead (useful because the placement of the woofer in a typical car installation requires the tweeter output be lowered to maintain a balanced sound).

Q
Can these speakers safely operate at a 2 ohms without damaging them, or should they only be operated at 4 ohms?
alec todd  Jun 08, 2020
2 answers
A
Speakers don't care if they are wired at 2ohms or 4ohms or 8ohms. Speakers only receive signal (power) from an amplifier or head unit. If your amp is capable of running at 2ohms, then the speakers can certainly handle that. The only way to get the speakers to "operate at 2ohms"..... is to wire another pair of 4ohm speakers on the same channel and wire them in parallel to your amp. Otherwise, the speakers are 4ohm speakers and you can't change their impedance unless you raise it by adding a resistor.
terrell  Aug 24, 2020
A
Hi Alec, my sound system was installed by a proffesional guy in NY. I entrusted everything to him but my other set of speakers for the front are also focal but a better one but i made sure that it is also 4ohms. For what i understand I feel safer to use 4ohms for my connection but if i'm gonna use the focal K2 series well that would be the time i will use 2ohms connection.
neil  Jun 08, 2020
Q
How is this set meant to be wired to an amplifier? Do I wire both the woofer and tweeter to the same channel or each speaker to separate channels?
keene  Mar 18, 2020

A
Both the tweeter and midbass are wired to the same channel.
alberto  Mar 21, 2020
A
Speaker and tweeter to the same channel. This set is for the configuration where speaker and tweeter are separated (not coaxial), like in front doors.

In the front door and pillars-no problemo! In the back there are no stock spot for the tweeters so I went with the focal coaxials.

I'm looking at buying these but it doesn't seem that they have flush mount cups for the tweeters. Anyone got ideas on how to flush mount these seemingly cylindrical tweets?
michael  Sep 02, 2019

They come with the cone shaped and flush mounts
ryan  Sep 04, 2019

The bullet shaped cylinders do not have to be used, I removed the grilles and mounted them behind the factory grilles. See the last picture with the description, similar to how I used it.

I ended upgoing with the KX series but one of the crossovers blew and I think they discontinued this line due to issues. I just recently got the Utopia and they're pretty amazing!

I'm not to sure, but i think if you just don't use them Your able to by pass. They come separate in the box.
julio  Apr 15, 2019
A
Yes, the crossovers are integrated into separate lengths of speaker wire for the tweeters and woofers
cory  Apr 15, 2019
A
Yeah, just don't hook it up. It is just a frequency blocker that plugs between the input and the connection on the speaker. You could leave it out if you wanted to, but I'm not sure why you would. You will likely experience e distortion at certain volumes that you would not experience when using it as intended.
jim  Apr 15, 2019
A
If I remember correctly it's part of the wiring so yes you can work around it. If you have tweeters already hooked up just use the wiring from those instead of the other speaker

Q
Do these speakers fit a 2015 Ford Fiesta? It's says they fit the rear but doesn't list the front. Almost all of the other 6 3/4" components are listed as fitting the front.

They will. The speakers are the same size front and back
ryan  Jan 08, 2019

I'm sure they will. The tweeters of im guessing they have to find a way to mount it. I had to modify mine to fit.

ISS is polyglass woofer. I don't think RSE is. RSE uses something called a phase plug for sound direction. The RSE has external crossovers. The ISS has built in crossover tech that works with online base blockers so you don't have to mount crossovers somewhere. I could be wrong, but I think the ISS is a little better made. People seem to champion the polyglass.

Will these speakers sound decent without an aftermarket amp?

Just deadened the doors and installed these and couldn't be happier. They're on a JVC KW-930BT headunit (very entry level) but sound amazing. I'm still auditioning them against the Morel 6-1/2" component set but my fears of bass response/harshness with the Focals haven't been warranted. These have warmed up nicely and have substantial low end for no amp (granted I bumped up 60-400hz in the eq +2). They're begging for more power but are clear at high volumes and have very respectable low end impact w/ even just head unit power. I'm enjoying the listen. In the house, the Morels had a fuller/more melded sound ...but the Focals had exceptional clarity with occasional hollowness (probably due to the infinite baffle moch up) . In the car, the Focals have warmed up and broken in and sound really good. Will amp them before switching over to the Morels to make the final decision...but so far very happy. (For others on the fence, I think you could be happy with either. The Morels had a hard time sounding clear at high volumes in the house on rock (FooFighters) without sounding harsh...generally they weren't as clear but had a more listenable quality overall (full sounding) that I really liked (with noticeable bottom end in the same infinite baffle setup in the house.) I thought I'd have to go Morel just for midbass/lowend but after getting the Focals in the door...that doesn't seem to be the case. [I ran the house setup w/ the same head unit but used a flat eq....thinking I just wanted to hear the speakers.]

But to better answer your question. Yes. they are very sensitive speakers. i have JL 2 ways in the back door, and my amp is set half way up for them. These however are at the lowest gain setting on my amp. So, i tune the other speakers around them. Wouldn't take much to make these sing. everyone who has heard them in my XB has been amazed. best purchase I've made so far. Good luck. Have fun!
james  Feb 28, 2018
A
wouldn't know. Pushing 75 watts per, and couldn't be happier. Even better than my old Boston's.
james  Feb 28, 2018
A
Depends on the head unit, but I would guess these sound way better than most stock door speakers.
justin  Feb 28, 2018
A
Depends. There are a few factors if you're using the stock radio or after market, if the vehicle has a built in amp. I'm going to assume you're putting in or have put in a head unit. They will sound decent in fact much better but like with all new speakers they need to be conditioned or broken in. Don't blast them right away. Let the voice coil settle on medium to low volume, this will also slowly flex the poly ring too. You'll be happy
jason  Feb 28, 2018
A
Absolutely, but who's in this game to be "decent"?

micah  Nov 27, 2017

Yes. there are inline crossovers. They are tube like, small, and they do a really good job. These are a steal at this price.

Most likely 18 gauge, don't think it's 16....
