Overview

Our take on the JVC CS-DR600C

Step up with components

How long have you been driving around listening to subpar factory speakers, or even blown speakers? JVC designed the CS-DR600C component speaker system to be an affordable solution that provides a serious sonic upgrade. Built to weather the extreme temperatures of life in your car doors, the slim-profile 6-1/2" woofers offer strong audio performance with good power handling. Additionally, you can mount the separate tweeters up higher in your vehicle, giving you great stereo separation so you can enjoy your favorite songs like never before in your car.

Solid boost in sound quality

The system includes a lightweight yet durable carbon mica woofer that offers smooth, consistent performance, along with a 1" balanced dome polypropylene tweeter that'll increase your music's clarity. These speakers will give you a solid boost in sound quality when powered by your vehicle's radio, but they'll really shine when powered by an outboard amp. Grilles are included.

These are a great replacement for worn-out factory speakers! They don't require a lot of power, so even a factory stereo can power them well. We paired ours with a JVC receiver, and they sound outstanding.

Pros: Great sound Low cost Great factory replacement

Awesome for a factory upgrade. however the low end is very subtle with these although it is present, I will admit my factory speakers had a warmer tone, but these come with more clarity and astounding high end and midrange when paired with an aftermarket deck. Not a bad buy overall but if it's the only pair your car can take, like mine, then a small sub would definitely be recommended.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I followed the recommendation from the Crutchfield expert and was happy with the performance of the equipment. They supplied all the adapters I needed to retrofit the factory system. There was a glitch, however. I was asked if i had a 4 or 6 speaker system. I had a speaker in all 4 doors, so I said 4. This led to me getting the incorrect mounting kit for the digital receiver. Because there was a place for tweeters in the dash (though the factory system had no tweeters) I was supposed to have said I had a 6 speaker system. I also think I got the wrong adapter plug that was to allow me to simply plug in the new head unit and not cut wires. I called Crutchfield and they got me back on track on the installation by supplying an alternative dash kit, and I cut the old harness to wire to the new plug because I almost gave myself an aneurysm trying to wire the adapter plug! Matching the factory wiring colors would have made this nice.

Pros: Good value, Great customer support. Lots of extras to make the installation easier.

Cons: Be careful when supplying information about the factory system. Better maybe to talk to someone rather than filling out the form online.

Curtis from Titusville, FL on 3/10/2018

2002 Toyota Celica GT
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed on 7th gen Toyota celica gt 6 speaker system for factory replacement. Very good sound quality install was combersom at first on the doors. The wire diagrams are on the box flap so don't toss it unroll job is done. Not all the hardware is in the box for mounting the 6.5" woofers to the meta brackets. Used 8 count, 1/4" self tap screws to mount woofers. Luckly I keep jars of fasners in the garage. Since the celica had factory tweets and it's own factory harness, I didn't need to use the JVC crossovers provided (might go back and install them later to test the difference from stock harness). I crimped connectors the the JVC tweets and popped the factory pins from the connection harness. Used heat sink on the factory ends so no wire cross each other or the door frame after connecting the tweets. Giving 4 stars since it did not come with the finishing screws to mount the 6.5" speaker and grill to the adapter brackets. If your doing a 4 to 6 speaker conversion. Cutting the meta harness in the middle between factory connector and speaker connectors will be needed to splice the crossovers on the meta harness. Splice the speaker connectors to the woofer line out to connect to woofer. Using 16-22 shielded male & female connectors (red) will make this easy to connect. For first timers, I recommend having someone who has done speaker installation since this isn't a direct plug-n-play. The instructions are vague and printed on the box instead of a booklet.

Pros: Nice design and look Clean sound quality for the price Included crossovers for 4 speaker to 6 speaker conversions.

Cons: Instructions printed on box not in a booklet. Not very clear on instructions for beginners. Missing 8 finishing screws to mount woofers with grill to the mounting adapter brackets. The +/- tabs are flimsy and easily bend on woofers when connecting meta speaker harness. Used a jewlers flathead screwdriver to space the gap on the meta harness neg side.

Great sound/price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds way better than the factory speakers. Now my car actually has tweeters too, originally just a 6-1/2 speakers up front. Only installed on front doors, will do rear speakers soon time permiting.

Pros: Great sound/price (purchased with 50% promo with hvac head), came with surface mount for tweeters.

Cons: Adaptor didn't quite work out of box. After I stopped trying to figure out instructions and just went with it, ended up working out. (Can see from picture just drilled new holes/ mount didn't quite line up)

nice speakers

2007 Mitsubishi Galant
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the sound, especially when I mounted the tweeters up on the dash where the old tweeters were. Took a little bit to figure out how to install the new speakers with the kit provided. I ended up drilling 3 holes to anchor the plate in the tabs. Wasn't sure about using the screws in the plastic, but seemed to be pretty secure. The wiring adaptors were great, plugged into factory plug and onto the speaker. I had to cut a slot in the wiring grommet to run the wires to the back of the speaker. The grommet was nice and thick and sealed up well around the wires. One thing the instructions didn't show was one screw behind the reflector on the door which I found after looking at my factory manual on my 2007 Mitsubishi Galant ES. I found these speakers for a similar price, but they didn't include the wiring adaptor or the instructions and support.

Pros: Much better than stock. I'm very happy with the sound.

Cons: Took a little time to figure out how to mount, but eventually worked out well. The second one was very quick.

Good sound, seems well made

Used to replace the blown stock speakers in my 2000 Tahoe doors, front and rear. Didn't use the tweeters in the rear, only in the front. Had to custom mount the crossover in the front doors and made my own mount for the tweeters since they weren't the exact same as the stock ones. Also had to drill new holes for the woofers in all four doors. Nothing I didn't expect and no problem. I didn't mind the extra install work because I got these 50% off when buying them along with a JVC head unit. They sound great!

1998 Subaru Legacy Outback
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

sound quality is definitely better than stock speaker in my 98 subaru legacy outback, but not really as warm as the old stockers. originally, i was gonna return these and my head unit i bought in a package, but i got lazy and just decided to keep them instead of removing them. i know i would be happier with a higher quality, higher priced set of component speakers, but for the price of one pair of components that i decided i wanted, i'd be spending more than i spent on the whole order, which was 2 pairs of speakers, (4 speakers + 4 tweeters) and the jvc head unit. all in all it is better than what i had. the bass is noticeably punchier than the stockers, which was a "premium 9 speaker system". the crossover is basic and small so it can fit in tight spaces. if you are looking for a reasonably prices system, these are a good choice if they are on sale. i got mine buy one get one free when you buy a jvc head unit. seems to be a common sale. i can't imagine the install being that different from any other component system that will fit your vehicle. 4 stars. on a side note, to get the front tweeters to fit, minor modification of the mounts made it possible to fit the tweeters which were shown to not fit. also, the rears needed slighty more modification than the fronts, but they did fit as well. so if you have a 98ish subaru legacy outback, these can fit

Pros: Price if you get the Buy one get one deal. Upgrade from stock. Small crossover. Punchier bass than stock.

Cons: Crossovers are basic and not adjustable.

Installation wasn't as terrible as I feared!

2002 Toyota 4Runner
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a little intimidated by this setup. I like to keep it simple and just replace factory speakers. I don't go all out. My 2002 4Runner had a setup like this in the front doors. It took more work than a simple switch, but I'm very happy with the results. I didn't give them five stars because they sound a little quiet compared to my back speakers. That could be because of the location of the speakers in my old car and not the fault of these speakers at all. Whatever the case, I would get them again if I had to do it all over!

Pros: Good sound. Straightforward installation. Great replacement for factory setup.

Cons: They seem a little quiet compared to the rear speakers.

They work very well, had a little trouble with making a mount bracket for the tweeders on the fly. I used a small piece of corrugated tin laying in the yard, and had to bend it down over and up to allow the speaker to set into the hole. Drilled and cut the ends to match the factory bracket then attached speaker with duct tape. Works great, glad I had that tin lying around. Hopefully the picture and explanation can help someone else one day!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speakers and a great price. I was skeptical about these due to their low price, however the sound is great. with no subs in my truck the mid bass gets low enough you think there might be a small sub. The highs are nice and clear, not muddy or tinny. I listen to wide variety of music and these can handle the spectrum! From Hardcore Death Metal to Sublime, or rap music, very clear crisp highs and the mid and low end is clean with no muddyness. I am tempted to power them with an amp however only running off a new JVC head unit they are great. Driving on the highway with the windows down I cant turn the volume up past 35 as it is too loud, this is a great thing btw, my stock system that I replaced would be at max volume and the wind noise would easily exceed the music, not anymore!

Pros: Price, easy install, high power handling, tweeter has numerous mounting options, wire and use, no tuning needed, simple

Cons: it didnt install itself for me......Really these are great speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great, tweeters have versatile mounting options. My only problem was the inline crossovers were so light I had to pad them to keep them from vibrating even after screwing them down. The crossover felt cheap compared to similar component systems I've had in the past.

Pros: Great tweeter mounting system

Cons: Crossovers were very light and cheap feeling, no factory installed spade type connectors.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my Durango with the infinity system and I loved them for about the first week; then things started getting weird. some of the channels started dropping out so I checked all the connections and they were perfect. I put the stock head unit back in to check if there were bad connctions in the harness but the issues persisted. I narrowed the issues down to the oem amplifier and ended up bypassing the amplifier. Once I bypassed the amplifier, I picked up the dropped woofer channels but all of my tweeters are totally blown. I installed these per the instructions and installed them with the stock infinity amp that was listed as compatible with these speakers.

Pros: Sounded amazing when they worked

Cons: The tweeters stopped working

Clear & No Distortion

Dwaine from Athens, AL on 7/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these in, attached everything as I was supposed to do, set my crossover on my JVC receiver for my sub and turned everything on. WOW! I have an all JVC system so that surely helps, but the mids and highs on these are wonderful. No distortion all the way up to 40 (top volume number). Of course, I can't hear myself think at 40 but was nice to know. As far as bass... I do not know since I paired it with a sub.

Pros: clear and crisp mids and highs (I use a sub for lows)

Cons: none

Great crossover. Much more accurate than factory

Jay from Orange, TX on 6/19/2017

2011 Kia Rio

Installed gear: Pioneer AVH-4200NEX Pioneer GM-D1004 4 channel amp (45w RMS/channel) Replaced: Factory component set without crossover Review: Better overall sound quality with a decent crossover that gets rid of that "muddy" factory sound because frequencies are sent to the proper drivers. (Factory sent all frequencies to woofer and used a bass blocker on the tweeter). The stiff woofer cone provides lower bass notes than the factory setup, but these have less bass volume; however, the bass is purer. I'm adding a subwoofer to supplement these. They're good enough on their own depending on musical preferences, but if you listen to any R&B influenced genre, you'll want to supplement the bass response from these. Good clear vocals and mid range. Perhaps a little bright, but I'm not sure that isn't from the AVH-4200NEX auto EQ done on the prior speakers. Need to turn off auto EQ to be sure and then re-Auto EQ. Definitely recommend Auto EQ but that's a different review... Recommended but with qualification. I would buy them again for this car, but this car lacks the space for larger component sets that I would really consider if they would fit. I've never had bad speaker experiences from JVC/Kenwood, but I really prefer the eXcellon speaker line. Good but not best. Good value. Car notes: 2011 Kia Rio. Able to install tweeters in sail panels without surface mounting tweeter. Looks factory.

Pros: Price point/ value Bass accuracy; woofer cone stiffness Mid range and tweeter clarity Crossover doesn't leave noticeable gaps in sound or "muddy" sounds from wrong frequencies sent to drivers.

Cons: Bass volume; it's a trade off... Would have preferred larger component set but doesn't fit... Had to solder wires to woofer as clips weren't provided. Probably better long term, but would have been an irritation if I didn't have a soldering iron and solder.

Great sound and great deal.

Barry from Chico, CA on 6/19/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

getting loud loud loud, great notes. No low end but when paired with an amp and a separate sub these really shine into the high end. Turning up past the decibel level of a jet plane get them a little distorted but with 50 watts cleaned up and pushed through these things I am getting a great response and clear audio. I had to use the mounts to adapt to the speaker hole in my door and put the tweeter in the door as well right next to the woofer. My head unit has a lifting setting to bring the sound upwards and it sounds great, like the tweeters were placed higher. I got these for 50% off with a purchase of the JVC head unit and it was a great deal.

Pros: get loud clearly, handles an external amp great, handles the higher frequencies accurately but make sure to filter the low end out with your amp.

Cons: get distorted at high high volume, much less bass response than I expected- make sure to pair these with a sub woofer or much larger rear speaker maybe a 6x9 if your not getting a sub.

Installed them in my 2003 Avalanche. The instructions I received with them made it easy to install especially since it was my first time. Everything came in the kit that was sent. I would recommend self-tapping screws instead of drilling, it saves time. I did not read the reviews and I was a little bit disappointed with the bass.

Pros: Easy installation.

Cons: Bass not what I expected.

2002 Dodge Dakota quad cab. The speakers were easy to install and sound great. I did not need the amplification splitters, as my truck already had tweeters. I really appreciated the Molex connectors or the 6 inch door speakers, although I had to cut the connectors from my old tweeters and splice them to the new ones. Also had to enlarge the tweeter openings in the door so the new ones would fit. Total, about 3 hours.

Pros: Good sound, easy to install.

Cons: New tweeters don't fit the old opening.

I do not recommend these. I ordered 2 sets to replace the aging factory speakers, (there was a half price deal with the purchase of the head unit I ordered). After completing the installation of the rear, I will not be installing these in the front. I am ordering a different item for the front. They are vaguely acceptable at what I paid, but I would send them back if they cost much more.

Pros: The satellite tweeters provide improved clarity over the original stock.

Cons: Overall there is little improvement over the 16 year-old factory speakers.

Easy to install and well worth it for the money spent. Good upgrade from factory speakers. Recommend amp to push the speakers to peak performance, but good enough if only with an after market stereo with equalizer.

Added these speakers to the rear doors of my 02 Volvo as an aftermarket upgrade. They produce really great minds and highs, especially with the tweeters installed. The low end sound is lacking, and I would suggest pairing these with a subwoofer if you're looking for the low end, heavy bass output. Overall they're doing everything I hoped.

Pros: Great mids, highs, fairly easy to install.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are a great set of component speakers for the price but I have not quite gotten them wired with no flaws yet. I am currently having static through one of my tweeters but I am sure it is a user error on my part. The woofers are nothing to ride home about in terms of bass but I prefer to get my bass from a subwoofer and let my speakers handle the lighter work anyway. The combination definitely provides crisp sounding vocals with plenty of clarity. The main complaint I have is that when wiring my crossover from my woofer (which is in my doors) to my tweeters (which are in my dash corners) I had to make an extra connection with extra speaker wire since the wire coming out of the crossover was not long enough. This is where I am probably having the static originate from since the wire has to shut in the door.

Pros: Crisp and Clear Good Speaker Combination

Cons: Crossover needs a little bit longer speaker wire to reach from doors to dash

Features

Tweeters: The tweeters are PEI (Poly-Ether-Imide) balanced-domes; PEI is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging. A semi-dome tweeter has a dome placed inside a cone. Balanced dome tweeters are semi-dome tweeters with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the tweeter.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters can be surface mounted without adding anything to their fixed housings. Brackets are also included to allow flush mounting or angled surface mounting (approximately 30°).

Tweeter Dimensions:

Flush Mount Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.38" 0.643" 1.47"
Mounting Depth 0.805" 0.15" (minimum) 0.15" (minimum)
Frame Diameter 2.587" 1.82" N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.988" N/A N/A
Frame Width N/A N/A 1.822"
Frame Depth N/A N/A 1.860"

Crossovers: The 2-way crossovers have input and output wires attached. The woofer has quick slide terminals, but the wire has no terminals attached, so crimp-on terminals can be added (item number 120FQS10PK, sold separately) to provide the needed terminals. The crossover dimensions are:

  • Length: 3" (4-1/8" including wire)
  • Width: 1-3/4"
  • Height: 7/8"

Woofer Mounting: In addition to fitting standard 6-1/2 and 4-hole 6-1/2 applications, the woofer also has a standard 6-3/4 bolt pattern. However, if mounted in a 6-3/4 location the holes for the smaller pattern create an air leak, which should be sealed using a speaker baffle, or something similar.

JVC CS-DR600C 6-1/2" component speaker system

Written by Anthony, Advisor, on 4/30/2018 8:12:00 AM
Fantastic component speaker set. Very nice clean sound for the value. The tweeters are very small and give you tons of options when it comes to mounting options. The cross over is also very small allowing you to place it in hard to mount places in the door, or where ever you need it go.

I can't answer for a 2006 GMC Sierra, but for my 2007 Nissan Xterra, the front speakers were a good fit with no installation problems. However, for my rear speakers I had to locate speaker adapters (found them on ebay) other than the ones I received from Crutchfield. Still, in hindsight, this was a good purchase to upgrade my radio and I got a much better sound. Mark at Crutchfield was very helpful in answering my questions during the installation. If you wired them up properly so the two sets of tweeters were in parallel it should work. Whether the combination would sound good is anyone's guess. Two-way speakers have a built-in crossover to send bass and treble to the respective parts of the two-way speakers. If you buy these, I would replace the main speakers AND the tweeters and use the crossover which comes with the JVC's. That way you would be sure of having the sound balanced appropriately. Plus, these are going to sound WAY better than any factory speakers. [ Steven  May 24, 2016 ]
Thanks for your question. This is a speaker system, there are two woofers, two tweeters, two crossover's, etc. On the product page details tab you'll find this information under "what's in the box". Hope that helps. [ Kenny  May 06, 2016 ]  Staff
