About the JVC CW-DRA8

Bob Bihlmayer

Room for boom

As cars become increasingly smaller, it's getting harder and harder to find a place to install a subwoofer. JVC's CW-DRA8 powered sub gives you deep, full bass from a low-profile enclosure that easily fits under your car's seat or in a corner of your trunk. Its built-in amplifier delivers 150 watts RMS to the 8" sub, and its Class D design ensures that it'll run cool in some very tight places.

Wired remote control

If you're a tweaker, the package includes a wired remote control that allows you to make adjustments to the volume, frequency roll-off, and phase settings, especially good news if you listen to many different types of music. Even better, the wired remote eliminates the need for controls inside the enclosure, increasing air space for better bass. The enclosure includes line- and speaker-level inputs for flexibility in installation.

The JVC CW-DRA8 replaces these items:

Product Research

Overview: The JVC drvn CW-DRA8 is an amplified subwoofer with a built-in Class D amplifier. It contains an 8" cone woofer, which is driven by a 150-watt RMS (250W Max) amp. The acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure is compact enough to fit under the seat, behind the seat, or in small storage compartments. The CW-DRA8 comes with a wired remote control to let you control its volume, phase, and the frequency of the low-pass filter.

Enclosure: The CW-DRA8 features a specially designed acoustic suspension enclosure. It includes a 7-1/2" metal mesh grille (non-removable) to protect the woofer.

Wired Control: The active subwoofer comes with a wired remote control with a 16.25' cable. From the control, you can set the volume, and vary the Frequency Control (of the built-in low pass filter) from 50 Hz to 125 Hz. In addition, you can switch the phase of the woofer from 0°(normal) to 180° (reverse), if needed.

Connections: The CW-DRA8 comes with a single harness with power/ground/turn-on wiring and RCA input connections. The harness has 16.25' lengths of 14-gauge power wire (with an in-line 10A ATO fuse) and 18-gauge turn-on lead, plus a 5' dual 18-gauge ground wire. It also includes a 28" RCA input for connecting the subwoofer to an aftermarket stereo via RCA cables. A 14' speaker input harness is provided for connecting the sub to a factory radio (or a radio without RCA outputs). You can splice it to the head unit's speaker wires and plug it into the RCA input. An RJ-45 jack is provided on the bottom of the subwoofer for plugging in the remote control cable.

Controls: The only controls for the DRA8 are located on the wired remote. The rotary volume control (input sensitivity) lets you match the input of the subwoofer to the output of the head unit, and to control the volume of the sub, relative to the other speakers in the system. The rotary frequency control adjusts the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter between 50Hz and 125Hz. If you have large main speakers (6x9 or 6-1/2") in the vehicle, you can set the subwoofer's low pass filter near the 50Hz to 80Hz range. If the main speakers are smaller (4" or 5-1/4"), the low pass filter should be set in the 100Hz to 125Hz range.

Installation: The subwoofer comes with the hardware needed for installation. The enclosure installs using two brackets (included) attached on opposite ends. The power, remote, and signal connections are made in a recessed area on the bottom of the unit. The wires exit through a channel on the side of the unit. The included cable clamp holds the power, remote, and signal wires in place as they exit the channel.

I have a JVC head unit already with pre outs for a amp, what all would I need to install this in my 2005 f150 supercrew?
[ John  Dec 07, 2020 ]

I think you should be fine with what comes with it. I didn't need any additional pieces to hook it up. You'll love it.
[ RICKY  Dec 08, 2020 ]
Yes, it should it it's an RCA out.
[ Dan  Dec 07, 2020 ]
What parts/equipment do I need to install this to my 2004 gmc sierra with a pioneer mvh-300ex head unit? Thank you.
[ STEVEN  Nov 20, 2020 ]
1 answer
This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation.

Will this fit under the seat of a 2002 Tacoma?
[ Jaxon  Nov 16, 2020 ]
1 answer
We do not have the measurements of the available space under the seats in your pickup. You might try building a box with the same dimensions as this sub and see if that box can fit

I'm pretty sure it will It fit perfectly under my daughter's Camry seat
[ STEVEN  Nov 16, 2020 ]
I'd like to install a powered amp in the floor console of my truck since there's no other good place for one (no room under seats). Will this rattle everything that's in there, like change, pens, etc.?
[ RICHARD  Nov 10, 2020 ]

I have one under the seat of my regular cab pickup, it's got bass but it won't rattle your dash. It's just enough to know your not dealing with just a pair of 6x9s
[ JAY  Nov 16, 2020 ]
unfortunately i didn't put this specific powered sub under my console but i did put it under my seat. i put foam around it so it didn't shake the seats as much but it still does. based on that, if you put the sub under your console change might shake it really depends on if the sub is touching anything or secured in place
[ TAYLER  Nov 11, 2020 ]
The amplifier comes with screws to secure it and ground it. It must be grounded and anchored. I installed it under the driver seat of my 2008 Tacoma. Very tight height but works great. Install is easy with all included items. Be sure to buy connecting cables.
[ ROBERT  Nov 10, 2020 ]
How long is the wiring for the remote? Planning on installing in the trunk. Thanks!

Had to look in maual. It is 16ft long. Good choice!
[ CLIFF  Nov 08, 2020 ]
Long. Sub mounted on the back wall of my truck and I had to tie up the cord. estimate 6 to 8 feet?
[ David  Nov 08, 2020 ]
It's probably like 6 feet
[ BARBARA  Nov 07, 2020 ]
It's pretty long, I think you'll be fine. You will love this speaker, but I don't think you'll be pleased with it in the trunk, it just doesn't seem to have that kind of power. I had it under a TJ model Jeep and it worked really good.
[ RICKY  Nov 07, 2020 ]
Not nearly long enough for that. I'd say it is around 4-5 feet.
[ Preston  Nov 07, 2020 ]
My daughter's stopped working after 30 days. Is it possible to "blow" this unit or is there some sort of circuit breaker? Can it really be overpowered since it has its own amplifier?
[ BRGator  Jul 02, 2020 ]

there is a in line fuse on the battery side, that is all i know
[ CLIFF  Jul 02, 2020 ]
Mine has worked perfectly for over a year. I'd check my connections if I were you. These thinks seem to be really good. Never had a problem. Hope this helps.
[ RICKY  Jul 02, 2020 ]
Does a sub like this require an amp?

Has an built in amp, sounds awesome
[ JOEL  May 14, 2020 ]
This sub does not require an amp. It's built in and it sounds pretty good. It does not produce earth shattering bass, but fills out the low end sounds in the cab of my F150 nicely.
[ Kevin  May 13, 2020 ]
amp is built in, will need to connect to battery
[ CLIFF  May 13, 2020 ]
[ GEORGE  May 13, 2020 ]
It's self powered
[ Dan  May 13, 2020 ]
No. It has it's own built in amp
[ LIN  May 13, 2020 ]
Will this work on 2018 accord ex with factory radio?
[ JERBY  Jan 02, 2020 ]
1 answer
you may need to look at the back of your existing radio. if it has sub out rca connector then yes. you would still have to connect to battery for power.
[ CLIFF  Jan 02, 2020 ]
Will this fit under the seat of a 2019 Tacoma?
[ PETER  Apr 10, 2019 ]

Will absolutely fit underneath the seat and sounds amazingEnter an answer to this question.
[ JOHN  Apr 10, 2019 ]
Powered sub manual shows in diagram to connect power cable to fuse box. I understand you should connect it to the battery terminal instead. Is this correct?
[ Jonathan  Dec 27, 2018 ]
1 answer
I recommend connecting it to the battery terminal as that ensures everything will continue to work properly without any potential for putting too much load onto any part of the stock wiring. My bio:
