About the JVC KD-HDR40
JVC's KD-HDR40 CD receiver features a built-in HD Radio® tuner, which lets you tune in digital AM/FM broadcasts, including the alternate programming offered by many stations. Another plus — you can connect a portable player, such as an iPod® or Dock & Play satellite radio, to the handy auxiliary input on the front. The KD-HDR40 will also handle all your CDs and recordable discs, including ones you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. Add JVC's Bluetooth® adapter to make and receive hands-free calls with a compatible phone.
An advanced digital-to-analog converter delivers your music with new realism and clarity, and the built-in amplifier gives you plenty of clean volume without distortion. You'll appreciate the extra flexibility that the 7-band equalizer offers for dialing in the right sound for your vehicle.

Detachable Face: The unit features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.
Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.
LCD Display: The JVC KD-HDR40 is equipped with a 1-line, 11-character, white backlit LCD display.
Dimmer: This function dims the unit's display and button illumination.
Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off. In the unit's menu, the clock can be set to display with the unit on or off, only turning off when the ignition is turned off ("keyed" operation).
Note: The built-in clock is automatically adjusted using the clock data provided via an HD Radio broadcast or a Satellite Radio channel (optional tuner & subscription required)
24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-HDR40 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.
MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-HDR40 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.
CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-HDR40 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-HDR40 are as follows:
- CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
- Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)
7-Band Intelligent EQ (i-EQ): The JVC KD-HDR40 is equipped with a 7-Band Intelligent EQ (i-EQ) and 6 user presets (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Bass Boost, Vocal Boost, and User). The User EQ preset allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 7-band parametric EQ (Sub Bass, Bass, Mid Bass, Mid, Mid High, High, and Ultra High) from +/-10dB.
Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-HDR40 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to Low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to High, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. When all speakers in the system are powered by an external amplifier, the internal amplifier can be turned off.
Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 2.5 volt front preamp outputs, this unit has a set of 2.5 volt subwoofer preamp outputs. The subwoofer output is non-fading and has independent level control, adjustable from 00 to 08, and an adjustable low-pass crossover. You can select a cutoff frequency of Low (72 Hz), Mid (111 Hz), or High (157 Hz).
Note: This head unit is not equipped with a rear-channel preamp output.
Source Volume: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -1 to +10.
Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
DiAS II Digital Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner that is capable of receiving digital (HD Radio) and analog AM/FM stations.
Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception.
Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).
Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting, it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.
Display Information: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the JVC KD-HDR40.
Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the KD-HDR40 can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.
Digital/Analog Tuning: You can setup the KD-HDR40 to search both analog and digital radio stations, only HD Radio stations, and analog radio stations only.
Digital/Analog Presets: You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM digital/analog presets stations as presets (HD Radio multicast channels can also be preset). Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM).
Mono Mode: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.
IF Filter: You can also switch the analog tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.
US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.
Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:
- XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Direct2 tuner and the JVC CNP-JVC1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMJVC2, sold separately).
- SIRIUS: The JVC KD-HDR40 is compatible with the
SiriusConnect Universal Tuner and Plug & Play Dock.
- SiriusConnect Tuner: Connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner (item number 607SCC1) and the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100) - package # 700SIRJVC1, sold separately.
- SiriusConnect Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100, sold separately) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item number 607SCVDOC1, sold separately).
- Auxiliary Input: A portable XM or Sirius satellite radio receiver can be connected to the head unit via the front panel auxiliary input or a JVC auxiliary input adapter, such as the KS-U57 or KS-U58 (sold separately).
Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.
MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-HDR40 can play MP3 (32-320 kbps)/WMA files (32-320 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.
Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from damage; playback starts automatically.
Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.
Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.
Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable digital music player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.
Optional Rear Auxiliary Input: An optional KS-U57 or KS-U58 adapter (105KSU57 or 257KSU58, both sold separately) can be connected to the J-port on the rear panel; giving you an additional auxiliary input. When either of these adapters is used, you cannot connect another external device to this port.
Wireless Remote Control: The KD-HDR40 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK50). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Track, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).
Bluetooth Compatible: With the optional JVC KS-BTA200 Bluetooth Adapter (105BTA200, sold separately), this unit allows you to make and receive cellular phone calls through your Bluetooth enabled phone, or listen to a Bluetooth audio device. You can register up to 5 Bluetooth devices to this unit, however, only one unit of each type can be used at a time. When making a call, dial from your Phonebook, Redial, Voice Dial, or dial from the list of received or missed calls.
