Get your phones involved...together

The various multimedia capabilities of JVC's KD-R870BT CD receiver demonstrate that you don't always have to pay a lot to get a lot. Evolving Bluetooth® technology lets you automatically pair up two phones simultaneously for convenient hands-free calling and wireless audio streaming. iPhone® and Android™ phone compatibility provide you access to a variety of Internet radio choices, while this receiver's simple-to-use controls quickly get you into immersive sound-shaping and display settings.

The latest Bluetooth technology

The KD-R870BT will pair with a Bluetooth-equipped phone automatically. So, don't worry about digging into tedious menu settings to wirelessly connect both phones. When you have to share the ride, this JVC enables you to pair two Bluetooth-equipped phones and quickly switch between them for hands-free calling and audio streaming. iPhone users, you'll also get voice control when pairing an iPhone with Siri.

Pick your source

You'll really enjoy playing music from Pandora® and iHeartRadio® on this great-sounding receiver, and iPhone users can now tune into Apple Music® for even more variety. You can also satisfy your music fix using the receiver's sensitive AM/FM radio, CD player, and front aux input for a portable music player, like a high-res player. And if you have MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, or FLAC music files on a thumb drive, the USB port can handle those too.

Tweak the sights and sounds

Once you've got the music going, you can shape your sound with the onboard 13-band graphic equalizer or select one of the eight EQ presets for a quick boost. JVC's K2 technology spruces up the sound of digital music by expanding the compressed bit rate, and you can add more kick to any source with the loudness switch. Since most car speakers are located down low in the doors, the KD-R870BT offers Sound Lift, which adjusts your music's frequencies to virtually "raise" your speakers for better, more natural imaging. If you're adding amplifiers or a powered subwoofer, the two sets of 4-volt preamp outputs provide you the clean signal you need for added output.

You can set the illuminated display to dim at a specific time or when you turn your headlights on. And if you'd like to avoid being seen from miles away, JVC included a 32-step brightness control for just the right amount of light in your dash, day or night.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

It's a decent sounding radio, but it takes awhile to learn how to use the computer controls. The learning curve requires quite a bit of patience and repetitive attempts to learn how to operate it.

    Disappointing unit from JVC

Crutchfield customer from Frederick, MD on 2/17/2018

    2010 Toyota Corolla
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought a JVC head unit in the past that was pretty good and the price was excellent. The KD-R870BT is a serious downgrade in quality for the following reasons: 1. The firmware repeatedly crashes if a CD with 100 tracks on it is being played. I contacted Crutchfield tech service and they were very helpful. They informed me there were no firmware updates that I was hoping might fix this bug. 2. The bluetooth interface is very buggy. When it's connected, it works well. It's the getting in connected part in the first place that sucks. My transmit BT device is an Android OS phone. The BT connectivity has been experienced by 2 of my smart phones. 3. It takes a long time to start when powered on. 4. The CD eject takes a long time. It should be a hardware interrupt and mechanical only implementation. I shouldn't have to wait for the slow software to process the input. I suspect my reason numbers 3 and 4 are due to the firmware being written poorly, without keeping performance a high priority. It's probably written on a JVM platform, which is a terrible thing to do. 5. It is really irritating that firmware bug fixes will never be addressed. There will never be any updates for the firmware. For this reason, I probably will never get another JVC unit. If their business model prohibits fixing bugs and making firmware just better, I don't want to be a consumer of their products.

Pros: The price is low, the equalizer options are good.

    Cons: Super buggy firmware.

It's a decent sounding radio, but it takes awhile to learn how to use the computer controls. The learning curve requires quite a bit of patience and repetitive attempts to learn how to operate it.

Pros: I really like the Bluetooth telephone feature that allows calls to come through the Radio (Good safety feature). The sound quality is good.

Cons: The learning curve is steep for the computer feature controls. They are not easy to use while drivin. (Not a good safety feature). They are certainly not as intuitively obvious as identifying and turning analog knobs while driving. The pairing process can be a bit cumbersome and frustrating.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This JVC unit stopped playing USB and Bluetooth. The only input that works is the radio and it only receives a few channels. It was working well one day and the next nothing worked on the unit. I tried resetting the unit and worked all the troubleshooting scenarios. I have had this unit about 1 year but the warranty is only good for 90 days. I realize this is not a very expensive unit but I certainly expected that it would last longer than 1 year. I will not be buying or recommending ANY JVC product any longer.

    Pros:

Cons: stopped working within 1 year and warranty only good for 90 days.

    Great Sound, Easy to Install

Replaced my factory stereo with tis one. The instructions made it a breeze to install. The sound (when paired with the JVC speakers I got as well) far outshines what was in the Jeep to begin with. Even with the top down the sound is great.

Perfect fit in my '99 F-250 Super Duty. And very good sound, pretty easy to install, looks fine. It's just a little too complex for me, and not particularly intuitive on the buttons/features/layout. And the buttons need brighter lighting or could be larger or better marked. You have to look around for a while to find what you need. Maybe after I use it a few more weeks it will fall into place better.

So easy to install - especially with the kit provided by Cructhfield. Takes a little time to get used to where all the different features - such as equalizer, tone, etc., are in the menus, however; once you get the sound the way you like it, there's hardly any reason to change. I use my bluetooth smart 'phone to play Spotify music through the head unit. The JVC and my LG connect seamlessly and there is no difference in quality as compared to say a USB. Terrific sound and value - and I matched it with a set of (4) JVC speakers that sound great. For the money, you can't beat it.

Great replacement stereo for son's 1st car - '99 Protege

Andrew from Claymont, NJ on 9/28/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a replacement stereo for my sons crappy 99 Mazda Protégé, which had 1 working speaker out of 6 total. He absolutely loves it. The JVC speakers in the front door and rear deck are just great, and my son loves the bass response of these speakers, too. I tried to raise him right so he does have an affinity for Van Halen, Metallica and Dream Theater and other classic rock, but he is influenced by is friends hip-hop affinity and some rap. He will be getting the rear door speakers from Crutchfield to complete the system. He doesn't need anything super expensive probably in the range of $40-$50/pair. We had one of my best buds install it and once he had it figured out, it was pretty easy to install.

Pros: Relatively easy install. Tool to remove old stereo was key! Awesome bass and volume for the price. Love the Bluetooth and iPhone capabilities. Only replaced 4 of the 6 original speakers, and it is no comparison. I highly recommend it for an affordable 1st car stereo. Thanks to Crutchfield salesman for helping me get this as a xmas gift for my son. Made sure all harnesses and speaker mount adapters were included.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only had this receiver installed for about a week, but I am reasonably happy with it. I wish the preset EQ options were broader in their scope, and/or the user settings were actually easy to use. So far I haven't been able to figure out how to set more than one frequency in that domain - the command path in the manual makes sense until I try and use it on the receiver, at which point I hit a dead end. I have not had the time to sit down and pore over the manual nor have I had the time to call Crutchfield for support in addressing this issue. I was sort of hoping I wouldn't need to call support to set the EQ. I can mix and set EQ in ProTools, this shouldn't really be all that hard. That said, I didn't shell out but a little more for this receiver, so what did I expect? I'm very happy with the USB port on the front and the fact that I have a brand new CD player in place of the 2001 factory Honda receiver that would sometimes decide I didn't deserve to get my CD back when I hit the eject button. And I should note as well that the couple times I did call Crutchfield for support in the installation process the experience was excellent - I always got what I needed to know and they were always courteous and friendly, as I have come to expect. And I know that once I do have the time to address my EQ problems I will be able to call them and they will know what they are talking about and are very likely to easily guide me through the problem to a solution.

This radio was super easy to install and set up. The Bluetooth works flawlessly with IPhone 6. I've used the hands free calling feature and love it. I never would have thought I'd be able to have this feature in my beater truck. This radio is a great value. You wouldn't think that a radio for this price would have so many features.

Pros: Easy install and set up (using manual). Bluetooth works perfectly. Hands free calling works wonderfully.

    Cons: Haven't found one.

Radio has good sound, was relatively easy to install. It is NOT easy to use as far as setup. The screen will not display the clock even though it has been set up. It is nearly impossible to customize the sound.

    2002 Toyota Tundra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am really pleased with this product. I think it completely lives up to it's price tag, which is the most important thing for me. I wanted a replacement for my factory radio, and this totally fits the bill. I have a 2002 Tundra, and with the help of the online assistance, I was able to very easily get everything I needed to complete this installation myself. I have 0 experience with car stereo installation, so I was impressed with the fact that all the installation went off with only a few little issues (which were not the fault of anything except aged plastic breaking - a few clips from the dash panel of my truck). I found the setup to be easy, the features to work as expected and the sound quality totally acceptable (though I did get some better results after tweaking things in the setup a little). I am pleased with the sound quality (I didn't replace speakers or anything so I wasn't expecting that to be radically different, only a little better than factory). Mostly the functionality is so so so much better than factory that I'm totally happy. Advice - read all the installation directions before starting, read through the manual once installed for setup tips.

Pros: Bluetooth & USB work great for me w my iPhone I had a good self-installation experience Far nicer setup than my factory stereo w tape adapter Cleaner looking unit Pretty well designed functionality and buttons and ergonomics

Cons: These are all MINOR Cons, in my opinion - again, keep in mind the price point of this unit some items are a little bit buried in menus, like EQ, but there are faster ways to access if you read the instructions this unit does not seem to recognize AAC files on a USB drive, even though I believe it's supposed to (it did recognize MP3 files on the same drive - MS-DOS formatted) Searching through a device directory is pretty smooth, but there does seem to be a lack of a "Shuffle All"

Radio Install instructions were only fair, but the help from Crutchfield was excellent and the install went well as a result. The Porsche wiring system is a bit unusual and more difficult than most others.

Pros: Attractive looking unit, great sound, easy to use after the setup is completed.

    Great Upgrade From Factory Radio

Doug B. from Charlottesville, VA on 8/19/2016

    2000 Pontiac Grand Am
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The factory stereo was great for it's day but it was time to replace after some electrical issues started presenting. Picked this JVC for price in a bluetooth stereo and review ratings and pretty much concur with the reviews. I really like the phone connection as I feel safer talking now with both hands on the wheel - that's my big personal upgrade. All other features work great. Where this stereo could improve is that the preset channel settings are not intuitive. Yes, you can save 18 presets, but only numbers 1-6 are accessible with the buttons. To access 12-18 you press the search button that changes the volume knob to a search dial and you scroll through channels 1-18 this way. It is taking some getting used to but am getting used to it so it's not a deal-breaker. I do prefer a stereo where you press a button to scroll through FM1-FM2-FM3 and then use the six preset buttons to select the station off of that. Clear? Great! Also, the lighting I find kind of bright at night. You only have day and night settings for the dimmer, and even the night setting I just find bright as I drive around, so I'd prefer more control over the dimmer setting. It is taking some getting used to but am getting used to it so it's not a deal-breaker.

Pros: Fast Bluetooth pairing with great bluetooth features.

Cons: With only two settings, I'd like more control of the dimmer - at night even the light of the dimmed setting on the stereo is quite bright. Finding the preset channels (18 in all for the FM) is not intuitive.

This is my third JVC receiver, and JVC never disappoints me on the sound quality front. Siri control seems to work ok, although the mic sometimes doesn't pick up my voice clearly enough for dictation (as evidenced by a few wrongly worded text messages). Stylistically, most single DINs are about the same in my opinion, and this is about middle of the road or maybe even a bit bland for an entry level receiver (nothing will ever be as cool as my original JVC El Kameleon!). Installed for a week, and so far so good.

Very nice radio with good sound and reception for price. Many features that you would not expect for a radio at this price point. Recently installed so time will tell. The Menu takes a while to learn to navigate and it seems a bit overly complicated. There is not a BASS/MID/TREBLE control. You have to set the X-over to adjust the sound. This is one of the nicest units I have seen for less than $100.

Pros: Bluetooth works well, easy to install, great value

Cons: no Bass/Treble controls, complicated menu navigation

Works great after having to exchange the first one I got

The first one I received broke after a few days. The display froze in place and would not power off and when I took it out and put it back in it had no power. Crutchfield replaced it quickly and I have not had any problems since. I used JVC component speakers with it and the sound is great. The controls are a little hard to use like most single DIN receivers, but they are fine once you get used to it. I have no complaints.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first attempt at car stereo installation. I wanted an upgrade from the base factory system in my 2012 Jeep Liberty. I didn't want to spend a boat load of money. I had a small list of what I was looking for. Bluetooth was the main reason. I wanted good power and good sound. With the JVC KD-R870BT i got everything I was looking for. And at a great price. I'm not a fan of XM radio so I didn't care that this unit isn't XM ready. I purchased some JVC speakers to go with it. Got them at half price when buying the JVC head unit. For just a little over $180 is all it cost to get what I wanted. Installation was actually pretty easy once I figured everything out. Detailed instructions and a couple calls to the great tech support folks at Crutchfield helped me along the way. I am very impressed with this this company and will certainly buy from them again. Back to the stereo... There is a lot to go through in terms of options and settings. A ton of different ways to tweak your sound. Just take your time and play around with it and get to know the stereo. It's easy to figure out. This baby gets really loud. It's very crisp and clear. I plan on adding a sub somewhere down the road. But for now I couldn't be any happier. Highly recommended!

Pros: Great sound. Great Bluetooth connectivity. Cool looking. Ease of use. Value for the money.

Cons: The only one I can come up with is the clock seems to get messed up from time to time. The day displayed will be wrong. Not big deal to me. A simple adjustment in the clock setting and all is good.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Radio is what I expected for the price. Good options and fine sound and controls. Setting up Bluetooth for the phone will require the manual and auto connect is not consistent. Not as intuitive as a lot of the radios I use my phone with. Unrelated to the radio itself are the mounting bracket and instructions. Very disappointing from better past experiences with Crutchfield. Poor quality plastic, Cryptic instructions at best. If I hadn't had past experience with radio installations I would be very upset. Has Crutchfield changed companies they use for these brackets? If so, bad choice.

Pros: Good sound and options for the money. Wiring harness worked perfect.

Cons: Menu operations overly complicated for a standard radio of this type. Unrelated to the radio itself.....VERY poor installation instructions with the cheap bracket that didn't allow the radio to come flush properly to the dash. Newbie would be frustrated trying to install this one.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start out by saying that I ordered from Crutchfield because I'd heard nothing but good things about the way they stand behind their products and I'm SO glad I did because my first JVC KD-R870BT unit only lasted two weeks. I ordered this unit because I wanted Bluetooth connectivity -mostly for streaming music. I'm also old enough that I still have some CDs laying around. The AutoConnect feature on the Bluetooth is just about worthless. I had problems with it from the get-go. After getting back in my truck in the morning or after work, occasionally it would connect on the first try but more often than not I found myself fighting with the radio for miles on end trying to get the Bluetooth to reconnect to my phone. I'd end up shutting the radio off, then the phone, then both, etc, before it would connect. Very frustrating. Eventually I just started listening to the radio more because I figured I'd be half way home before I got the Bluetooth to connect anyway. After two weeks everything but the AUX port stopped working. The Bluetooth showed an error code and the radio no longer transmitted sound to the speakers. The display showed that it was playing but there was no sound. I contacted Crutchfield and they were great. They immediately put a new unit in the mail for me. With the second unit, I'm having the same problem with the Bluetooth auto-connect feature so I'm guessing that's just the way it's going to be with this radio. Only been a few days so we'll see if it

Pros: Bluetooth mic sounds good, once the Bluetooth actually connects it's a good connection and the sound is satisfying, the radio looks nice, install was straight forward, the display options are nice

Cons: Very menu-driven and complicated and the menus are several levels deep which makes it difficult to manipulate while you're driving. Bluetooth auto-connect feature stinks. Preset buttons are really tiny. Questionable build quality considering my first one only lasted two weeks.

I was skeptical of this, as it was about $100 and came with everything I needed. I had planned to get a cheap deck at the local auto parts store but saw this and figured the end cost would be about the same, and I hoped this would be a better deal. I love this radio. It was easy to install, the instructions even made sense! I love this one so much that I am trying to talk my fiancé into putting one in her car as well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars in "ease of use" is because there are so many functions that I just can't remember them all yet. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone looking for a quality radio at a good price.

Lots of features for the price. Big improvement over the factory unit. Sounds great with the base factory speakers. Took awhile to figure out which pieces of the trim components were needed as the instructions were not clear. Instructions were not included with the antenna harness which had an unidentified single blue wire but was able to find its purpose in the Crutchfield Q&A database. Overall satisfied with the upgrade.

Pros: Lots of features for the price, improves the sound quality of factory speakers,

Cons: Installation instructions not real clear, requires some patience. Confusing antenna harness; make sure you connect the blue wire to the radio harness before installing.

I am used to the good treatment Amazon provides. Crutchfield is much better for audio equipment, especially car stereos. They sent me everything I needed to install the radio and subwoofer I bought from them. I had not replsced a car stereo in over 40 years. I found that DIN standards rock! The removal of old and install of new was as easy as the YouTube video made it look. Keep up the good work. I bet it will not be 40 years before I buy from Crutchfield. Whenever I get a used car, I immediately replace the old factory unit with a new in-dash deck from Crutchfield. This is probably the 6th JVC unit I've purchased for that purchase in the last 10 years. For the price, you just can't beat this unit. I like this deck...it has all the features I need: iPod connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity, etc. I am old enough to still want a CD player once in awhile, and this has one. To be honest, I feel like the quality on this unit is a little lower than other JVC units I've previously purchased at similar price points (ex. the buttons feel a little cheaper). But overall, for the number of features you get for price, this is a great choice. Side note: I installed it myself...very easy to do with the supplies and instructions that come with the unit. Another of the reasons I love Crutchfield.com.

Pros: Tons of features (CD, Bluetooth, iPod/Android compatibility, USB, front aux port, etc.)

Cons: Buttons/knobs feel a little cheap.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a great receiver and the sound quality out of my factory speakers is mind-blowing compared to the factory unit I had. It has a wonderful set-up menu allowing to set sound for the size of your speakers and tweeters. You can also customize the EQ on the "user" setting. The bluetooth works perfectly, allowing me to make and receive calls with the touch of a button, using voice-dialing. I don't even need to know where the phone is, so it is true hands-free. It's phone-free, in fact. During a call, you can tweak the audio quality so the person you are speaking to hears no noise or echo. Don't forget to install the mic cable in the back before you install the unit! There is no built-in mic! This is a good thing, and by drilling a 3/8" hole in the open space below the receiver in the adapter box's side, I was able to mount the mic there, against the side of the cubby hole in the box. I couldn't be happier with it.

Pros: great audio, great bluetooth even the radio sounds like a CD.

Cons: I'd prefer a good built-in mic, but it was not a deal breaker.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great product for a great price. I was looking for a head unit that had connectivity to replace my original factory stereo. It works perfectly. Easilty connects via bluetooth and has clear sound. Settings take some time to adjust but once that is done it's a breeze. I do need to play around with it a little more to figure out how to prevent the stereo from blasting when moving from bluetooth back to FM. Wiring harness was very easy to connect to factory harness. Dash kit took some time to fit into my vehicle (my opening was a bit different than videos I had watched on youtube) but once I figured it out, the stereo was a breeze to slide in. Have not tried using gps through bluetooth so not sure if that works or not (having directions read through speakers). Wish I had purchased this product a long time ago.

Pros: Connects via bluetooth easily. Very easy to switch between sources. Hands free calling works well (takes some adjusting though). Love the fact that this stereo only has white as the primary color (didn't want a club in my car). Very easy to see the display in sunlight (don't wear polarized sunglasses and expect to see it though). Bluetooth microphone has plenty of cord length to put it anywhere you want to. Great price.

Cons: The stereo takes a bit (5-10 seconds) to connect the different sources (even FM) but it's more of an annoyance than a real complaint. Stereo doesn't have an option to display scroll and clock at the same time (you either can scroll artist/song or display clock/date). Wish it had both capabilities so I didn't have to keep changing the setting. Had to play around with the dash kit to install into my dash. Pandora source app sucks (just use bluetooth- much more functional and easy to use).

Excellent basic stereo with Bluetooth. All I was looking for was a simple stereo that could connect to Bluetooth for Pandora and it also has a USB input for a thumb drive with more mp3s and it works great. Awesome, simple product.

Pros: Ease of use Bluetooth Works with Androids USB port for tons of Mp3s

    Cons: None at this time.

The product overall is a very good value. I have two issues. The first, there are no connectors with the radio or the harness kit. I had my dash apart and had to stop to go to the hardware store for wiring connectors. The other is the quality of the microphone for the phone, I have tried every adjustment and placed the microphone directly in front of me at the bottom of the dash lens. The people I am talking to have a very difficult time hearing me.

Bought on sale. Huge improvement over stock radio. Especially enjoy the bluetooth pairing with my cell phone. Install was pretty straight forward. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price this is a great unit. I replaced factory head along with adding 4x 6.5 kickers and a 500w RMS kicker 4 channel amp. Made a huge difference from stock radio and 2x stock speakers. The radio has so many options to scroll through which is the reason for 4/5 ease of use. Once setup its no longer an issue. 4/5 "Coolness Factor", great toy integration such as smartphone via Bluetooth (with external mic) or USB; also 3.5mm aux jack. The goods supplied from Crutchfield made installation a breeze. Except for the dash kit. It is a little flimsy and screw holes will crack if torqued to much. Which is not an issue with Crutchfield but with the manufacture of the dash install kit.

Pros: Loads of connectivity, USB, Bluetooth, 3.5 jack. Great for hands free Bluetooth phone calls and great all around for music in general. Lots of settings to tweak in EQ and virtual sound effects. Pairs great with a 4 channel amp running 4x door speakers.

Cons: A little subjective, but lack of control over display colors and functions.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was just looking for a replacement and possible upgrade from the old CD player in my Jeep. I wanting a receiver that would play CD's as well as an AUX input on the front for easily getting my Spotify to play through my phone. I was expecting to need to spend $350-$400 for anything worth while and more for Bluetooth most likely. The JVC KD-R870BT is amazing for the price. It sounds amazing, so much more than the (at the time) super high end Alpine from the late 90's I pulled out. The Bluethooth works quick and hassle free. The phone conversations are clear and without that typical speaker phone delay that is so annoying. The whole install was super easy and only took about 45 minutes, much smoother than a whole afternoon of cussing and band-aids that I thought would be in store for me. I really wish I had decided to purchase this receiver sooner. It's more than reasonably priced, sounds amazing, works flawlessly, and thanks to the included install kit was effortless to self install. Good stuff!

Pros: Priced great, sounds amazing, many inputs as well as output configurations, easy install.

Cons: Apparently makes you late to work because I keep taking the long way in to listen to "just a couple more" before I get there.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When i bought JVC the only thing I was looking for was bluetooth and capabilities with Siri. This had them both. The color of the face is a really nice blue color. I like to use the setting where the light flashes with the beat of the music. It adds a nice custom touch to the stereo. Also this is compatible with a PAC hands free radio stereo steering wheel controls if you vehicle supports that. Which i also bought and it works fantastic. I love this JVC and Crutchfield. Dillion helped me place my order and was very helpful with adding everything I "needed" without spending all my money.

Great unit. Was really easy to install and the Crutchfield tech support when we had questions was great. We did it ourselves and had no problems. We even ran the Bluetooth Mic out the side of the stereo cover panel and up the seam to the right of the steering wheel and did not have to do any complicated wire pulling or dash or panel removals.

    Pros:

Cons: Instructions were a little unclear if you've never installed a stereo before. You will have to splice wiring harnesses together with butt connectors (that you need to buy) but it's easy.

This a nice replacement system for my 2001 Honda Accord. The sound is nice and fits nice in the dash. This unit replaced my factory 6 disk player I had. It only has a single CD player. Put most of my music is on my cell phone now. This unit does a nice job of streaming music from my Android phone. It's supports Pandora and Iheart. I normally just play music downloaded to my phone to avoid using my data. The added bonus is the hands free calling. It also woks well with google maps. Overall a nice system if you need to replace an old factory unit.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The JVC KD-R870BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR/3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC KD-R870BT. Check here for the latest Bluetooth compatibility information.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (via USB): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the JVC KD-R870BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5+) or Android smartphone (running JVC Music Play App) by simply connecting it to the JVC head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display. When an already paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to ten Bluetooth-enabled devices to the JVC head unit, with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio device connected at one time.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the KD-R870BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The controls of the KD-R870BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KD-R870BT also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-R870BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Enter Phone #: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.
      • Preset Dialing: You can store up to 6 contacts in the memory of this unit for speed dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KD-R870BT.You can search through your contacts alphabetically or numerically. Up to 400 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 each).
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone once you have activated the voice dialing function from the head unit's front-panel.
External Mic: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level, noise cancellation, and echo cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The JVC KD-R870BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display and support for AAC music streaming.

    • Stored Music & Music Apps: You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the JVC KD-R870BT for playback.
    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the KD-R870BT offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the KD-R870BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Advanced Music Playback: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the KD-R870BT lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. (AVRCP 1.4+ phones only).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the JVC KD-R870BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and external microphone. Simply press the "phone command" button on the KD-R870BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Bluetooth; the head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the KD-R870BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Android & iPhone Integration

Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0) Connectivity:  The JVC KD-R870BT's front-panel USB port lets you connect your AOA 2.0 compatible Android smartphone for music playback. JVC does not guarantee operation with all Android devices. There are two Android AOA 2.0 modes to choose from based on what content you want to listen to and how you want to control it.

    • Hand Mode: The JVC KD-R870BT supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android  (OS 4.1+) smartphone to the KD-R870BT's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the JVC head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Audio Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • JVC Music Play App: Downloading the JVC Music Play app onto your Android (OS 4.1+) smartphone not only allows you to listen to stored music from your Android device through the JVC CD receiver connected via USB, but it also lets you browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your store music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. You can also control Play/Pause and Previous/Next track from the head unit. In addition, the head unit will display song/artist information. You can exit the JVC Music Play app to access other functions and applications of your Android smartphone, while your stored music library is still playing through your head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.

iPhone Direct Connection: The JVC KD-R870BT's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning-connector or 30-pin dock connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The KD-R870BT supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use JVC's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (105KSU62, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KD-R870BT.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can will need to use the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device or a "Made For iPod/iPhone" 30-pin-to-USB cable (sold separately) to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KD-R870BT.

iPhone Audio Playback: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 16-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The JVC head unit supports audio playback of stored music, music apps, and podcasts on your iPod or iPhone. The KD-R870BT provides music control and song/artist information display. You can choose between two operating modes.

    • Head Unit Mode + Song/Artist Info: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically. The KD-R870BT also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your iPhone. During Head Unit Mode, the KD-R870BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to access your Apple device's touchscreen in this mode in order to access other applications; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • iPod/iPhone Mode: The iPod/iPhone Mode lets you control your older iPod/iPhone (iOS 5.1.1 and earlier) from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You'll still have access to basic playback controls (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the head unit, but advanced navigation functions will be locked. No song/artist information is displayed in this mode. The unit will simply display "App & iPod Mode".

USB Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

    Internet+AM/FM Radio

Internet Radio Apps (for iPhone/Android): The JVC KD-R870BT allows you to access Pandora and iHeartRadio online music services through your USB-connected iPhone or Bluetooth-connected Android smartphone. Your Apple iPhone must be connected to the KD-R870BT via the Lightning or 30-pin cable supplied with your iPhone, or JVC's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (105KSU62, sold separately). Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the JVC KD-R870BT. Your iPhone or Android smartphone device will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, LTE (4G), or WiFi.

    • Pandora App: The free Pandora App (either from Apple's App Store or Google Play) lets you play music from your Pandora music service account through the JVC KD-R870BT using your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 7.0+) or Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone. The JVC KD-R870BT provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list and sort them by date or alphabetically. New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing. You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up/thumbs down and bookmark them on your Pandora account.
    • iHeartRadio Link: The free iHeartRadio Link app for JVC (either from Apple's App Store or Google Play) lets you play music from your iHeartRadio music service account through the JVC KD-R870BT using your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+), or Bluetooth paired Android smartphone (2.2+). The iHeartRadio music service provides access to more than 1,500 live radio stations from coast-to-coast (including pop, country, urban, rock, talk, and sports). The KD-R870BT will provide control over the iHeartRadio Link app, as well as display station identification and song/artist information. From the head unit's front-panel controls, iHeartRadio stations can be searched by the following categories (Local, Genre, City, or My Stations). The Local selection provides a list of radio stations in your local listening area. The unit also provides over 22 Genres to choose from (including pop, country, hip-hop, jazz, etc.) to help you find the right radio station for you. In addition, you can search for radio stations by City. Cities can be searched alphabetically. You can even store your favorite stations (My Stations) for easier, quicker access.
Note: Access to these Internet Radio services will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. Not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

RDS AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KD-R870BT features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically. You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity. If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

    • US or European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.
    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

    • Auto Reload: If the ejected disc is not removed within 20 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.
Note: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

USB Mass Storage Devices: The JVC KD-R870BT features a front-panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-out cover. The USB port enables connection of USB mass storage class (MSC) devices; like USB thumbdrives and USB card readers, as well as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only) or Blackberry. You can insert a compatible USB MSC device into the head unit's USB port for playback, control, and song/artist display of a variety of music files.

    • Music Drive: The Music Drive feature lets you switch between multiple memory cards in a USB multi-card reader. When a mass storage class (MSC) compatible smartphone (like Android with Froyo/Gingerbread OS or Blackberry) is connected to the head unit's USB input, the unit's Music Drive features lets you select its internal memory or external memory (such as an SD card) for stored music playback.
    • USB Charging: USB devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1.5A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC KD-R870BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KD-R870BT are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amp Gain: When you are using the KD-R870BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 25 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 35.

4V/4CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The KD-R870BT is equipped with two pair of 4V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading and offer an independent level control (-50 to +10).

Crossover Network: The JVC KD-R870BT lets you choose between a 2-way or 3-way crossover network for your car audio application.

Yes, but you should get a powered sub. It has the pre-outs for the sub, but if you want real bass you'll need to power it separately. [ Matt  Feb 23, 2016 ]

The JVC KD-R870BT is a standard "single DIN" stereo which are all 2" tall x 7" wide. The only dimension that changes from one model to another is the depth. This JVC requires a mounting depth of 6.5" but you'll want a little more than that to allow for the wiring harness and any RCA cables you may connect to the pre-amp outputs. I hope that helps!
