Our take on the Polk Audio 70-RT

This great-sounding speaker hides in plain sight
Polk's Vanishing Series 70-RT speakers stand out audibly — not visually. Your favorite rooms don't have to be silent any longer just because you can't or don't want to put free-standing speakers there.

This great-sounding speaker hides in plain sight
Polk's Vanishing Series 70-RT speakers stand out audibly — not visually. Your favorite rooms don't have to be silent any longer just because you can't or don't want to put free-standing speakers there.

Polk's clever design yields big bass from a smaller space
Polk ingenuity fills their Vanishing Series speakers to overflowing with clear, full-range sound. Each model has three drivers — a tweeter, a mid-range and a woofer — packed into a smaller than an average space. Dual port bandpass technology ensures that you'll get deeper sound with a diminutive-sized speaker. Their paintable, seamless-profile magnetic grilles make it simple for these speakers to fit perfectly into your surroundings.

Might as well invite the whole speaker family over
Get two 70-RTs to listen to music in the den, or add more for a great sounding home theater. They're also a pretty close sonic match to Polk's renowned free-standing RTi speakers. Any way you choose, you'll get harmonious results.

An optional in-ceiling bracket is recommended for installing the 70-RT speaker in a home with new construction.

Nice Ceiling Speakers

Brian from Miami, FL on 4/3/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched many in ceiling speakers and after much debate, I ordered four of the 70RT's for my living room. They are used just for music, and they sound great. The 5 X 7 woofer does a great job with mid bass and punches enough deep bass with some volume. I am powering them with an AudioSource AMP-310 and they perform better than I expected. Well worth the money!

Pros: Easy installation, great sound and clean appearance!

Cons: They are over 8" deep, just keep that mind for shallow installations!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a little skeptical of using in-ceiling speakers. After numerous calls to the fabulous Crutchfield team, I landed on 3 of these for the L-C-R i used the 70-RT's for the rear. I haven't had too long to enjoy them for movies. But, for music, they do a really nice job. And they aren't taking up valuable floor space where my wife can put Haven't added the sub yet. Probably in the next few weeks. I'll copy this review into the 70-RT field as well. Thanks Team Crutchfield! great advice as always!!

Pros: great sounding as rear surrounds

Cons: None yet

Polk Audio 70-RT

B. Black from Hayward, CA on 6/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I must admit that I am a huge Polk Audio fan. In fact, this is my fifth 5.1 system built using Polk Audio speakers. Since my new home was prewired for in-ceiling speakers, I decided to give the Polk Audio 70-RT speakers a try. Initially, I chose 620-RT, but I decided to step up to the 70-RT because I wanted the clarity that 3-way speakers usually provide. I installed 5 70-RT speakers (LF, Center, RF, LS, and RS) Sunday pairing them with a 10-inch Velodyne subwoofer and a Marantz SR5010 receiver. The system sounds great and my wife loves the near invisibility of the system. Since the speakers have only been installed for a couple days, I only gave them 4/5 stars. I'll update the review after everything is calibrated and broken in.

Pros: crisp highs, in ceiling mount means happy wife, good low end response considering the size and enclosure

Cons: deep mounting depth might be a problem for some

Overkill for rear surround

jpw from California on 11/29/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these in spite of advice to use smaller, cheaper speakers for rear surround. I should have heeded the advice. These seem like perfectly fine speakers. Can you resist buying what's appropriate when you could buy fancy? I couldn't. I'll take consolation when watching movie scenes featuring bullets whizzing by. The rest of the time I'll forget they're there.

Great Surrounds

Jeff from Kansas City on 10/10/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed four of these about a month ago in the basement ceiling. They are coupled to a Pioneer Elite SC-71 receiver with Polk RTiA7 fronts, a Blackstone TL3 center, and a DSWpro440wi and it sounds fantastic!! The supplied templates made it easy to install and my wife is happy too because the surrounds are out of the way.

Pros: Sounds great, magnetic covers fit perfect

Cons: None so far

Awesome Sound

Polk Lover from Missouri on 2/14/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been a long time loyal Polk follower and have always been pleased with them, so this is very hard to write. When doing a recent kitchen remodel, I decided to replace the old 'builder grade' 6 1/2" ceiling speakers we had with these Polks. My hope was that I would be so blown away with them that I would replace all of the remaining speakers in the rest of our rooms for our whole house audio system (10 additional speakers). First of all, these were slightly smaller than the previous 6 1/2" speakers so the tabs wouldn't catch. I was able to fabricate a spacer ring to make them work (this may not be any fault of Polk, but do measure your cutout first if replacing existing speakers.) Next, these Polks are DEEP. Yes, I read the specs before ordering and new the dimensions, but I did have to make some accommodations that 'normal' flat-lying ceiling speakers wouldn't have to have. After spending an entire afternoon installing them, I was severely disappointed in the sound. I drive the whole house audio with a high end Denon so I don't believe that the source is the problem. We don't crank the music; we just enjoy nice background music. The 10 year old builder-grade speakers sounded better. They are definitely not worth the $ to finish out the house.

Pros: They do look nice!

Cons: Sound is poor. Deep installation depth. Expensive.

Vanishing Series In-Ceiling Loudspeakers: The Polk Audio Vanishing Series 70-RT is a high performance in-ceiling loudspeaker designed to bring high-quality music to any room or transitional space in your home. It's Polk Audio's smallest, most "invisible" full-range in-ceiling speaker. The Polk Audio 70-RT's lightweight polypropylene cone & sensitive silk dome tweeter can be angled for superior off-axis performance. The innovative addition of the woofer driver behind the main speaker adds depth & dynamics to this compact in-ceiling speaker. The in-ceiling speaker's Reflective Room Compensation Switch digitally compensates for "reflective" rooms, giving you placement flexibility.

Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance Technology: Laser-imaging technology allows Polk Audio engineers to see the entire vibrating surface of a driver and tweeter. This allows the engineers to actually see performance-robbing distortion develop on the speaker cone. Using this data, they can determine the Dynamic Balance of their high-tech materials, and alter the geometry and construction of the speaker to effectively tune out the offending resonance. Exclusive Dynamic Balance Composite Material Technology delivers sound that is effortlessly clean and clear, even at lifelike volume levels.

Klippel Optimized Motor Structures: The Klippel Distortion Analyzer allows Polk engineers to optimize each driver's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension to insure smooth, unimpeded movement even at extreme listening levels. This is especially important in the shallow depth area afforded an in-ceiling loudspeaker.

Full-Range 3-Way Driver Array: The Vanishing Series 70-RT in-ceiling loudspeaker employs a new innovative patent-pending design from Polk that's like having a full-range, full-size speaker in a small inset lighting fixture. To do this, Polk designed a deep well and mounted a 'Cassini Oval' woofer above & behind the main driver array. By adding a woofer for low frequency response, the midrange & tweeter is freed up to provide more efficient detail. This innovative deep diagonal positioning allows the 70-RT cutout to be just 6.5" in diameter. This full-range 3-way driver array results in the kind of broad coverage and big performance usually achieved only with bigger box speakers. The 70-RT in-ceiling loudspeaker features the following three drivers.

  • Tweeter: One 0.75" Dynamic Balance silk/polymer dome tweeter
  • Midrange: One 2.5" Dynamic Balance mineral filled polypropylene cone.
  • Woofer: One 5"x7"  Dynamic Balance 'Cassini Oval' mineral filled polypropylene woofer.

Reflective Room (Tweeter) Compensation Control: An easily accessible Reflective Room (Tweeter) Compensation switch allows you to make detailed adjustments to optimize the sound for any installation. The switch can be used to digitally compensate for harsh reflective surfaces. The switch doesn't merely reduce high frequencies, it actually allows you to "notch-out" a specific area of the spectrum (3,500-6,000Hz) where room acoustics most often interfere with performance. The switch has two settings:

  • Reflective Setting: If your listening room is very reflective, with smooth sheetrock walls, hardwood floors, and non-cushioned furniture, the sound will be overly "bright" and unnatural. Selecting the "Reflective" setting compensates for the effect of reflectivity in a hard room. Tweeter attenuation flattens room response, without hindering higher frequency response, for warmer, more realistic sound and more accurate imaging.
  • Normal Setting: If your room is not reflective, with curtains, artwork, lots of cushioned furniture and carpeting, sound will be absorbed by the room, resulting in more realistic reproduction and more accurate imaging. In this case, select the Normal setting.

Timbre-Matched: The Polk Audio Vanishing Series RT in-ceiling loudspeakers have been timbre-matched with Polk's RTi Series loudspeakers. Timbre-matching with the same internal components, and the same lightweight polymer composite cone material, insures utterly seamless blending from speaker to speaker. Timbre-matched speaker components will insure the same true response throughout your system.

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response of the in-ceiling speaker is 34Hz to 27kHz, and the -3dB frequency response is 48 to 25kHz.

Enclosure Design

Dual Bandpass Ports: Bandpass Ports are the way to go when you want high efficiency in small enclosures. The Vanishing Series in-ceiling speaker employs dual Bandpass Bass Ports, smoothly funneling the angled woofer's detailed low-frequencies down around the midrange and tweeter array. The port design eliminates "chuffing", so the small, practically invisible in-ceiling speakers achieve superior full-range blending and broad coverage with surprisingly deep bass.

15° Angled Baffle: A 15° angled baffle allows you to direct the mids & highs for the particular application; simply by rotate the speaker in the desired directions and tighten down the rotating cams.

Wafer-Thin Sheer-Grille: The Polk Audio Vanishing Series in-ceiling speakers feature Polk's exclusive wafer-thin Sheer-Grille, a magnetically secured grille that protrudes only 7mm from its surroundings. The Sheer-Grille can be painted to match your décor, making it virtually indistinguishable from its surroundings. The Sheer-Grille has nearly transparent, ultra-small perfs, and are acoustically inert, for dynamic, unimpeded sound and more uniform coverage, even in larger rooms.

Note: When painting the grille, it is highly recommend that you use a can of spray paint matched to the color of the surrounding ceiling. Brushes or rollers should not be used to paint the grille, as this will clog the perf holes.

Gold-Plated Spring-Loaded Posts: The 70-RT has a gold-plated pair of spring-loaded binding posts that can accept up to 12-gauge wire, single banana plugs, or pin connectors.

Mounting Options

Applications: You can use the Polk Audio Vanishing Series in-ceiling loudspeaker as in-ceiling rear surrounds to complete an RTi Series speaker system, or for superior dynamics in practically invisible multi-zone music systems.

Rotating Cam System: The speaker utilizes a rotating cam system to ensure a secure, vibration-free installation. There are four rotating cams to hold the speaker securely to the ceiling.

Note: There is an eyebolt on the back of the speaker that can be used for an extra measure of installations security.

Installation: The 70-RT can be installed in new or existing construction:

  • Existing Construction: In existing ceilings, use the included cardboard template for one-cut, drop-in simplicity.
  • New Construction: Pre-construction brackets (107PB50, sold separately) are available for new-build or open-ceiling retro-fitting.

Actually, no; they would not. For single speaker mounts, it's best to use "stereo input" speakers so you'll still get both the left & right channels of audio from the single mounting location. For multi-room distributed audio systems, I highly recommend contacting the Crutchfield A/V Design Group: This specially trained group of advisors can help design your multi-room system and recommend the specific components and cabling you'll need to get the performance and capabilities you require in each location. [ Ryan  Dec 27, 2017 ]  Staff
Yes, these can be slightly angled. [ Riley  Sep 19, 2015 ]
Yes these do aim straight down - there is an angle to the main driver but it is funneled down a tube and projects the sound evenly out of the front of the speaker with the midrange and tweeter - the speaker is well balanced and sounds great. I would suggest you download the user manual and check out the line diagrams on page 4 - it will show you how the speaker is configured. [ Christopher  Sep 18, 2015 ]
They are placed angular behind the face plate aiming down. If you are planning for front three then voice is modular and perfect as per placement. But if placed one or two odd in corners then you would definitely hear better facing down [ PANKAJ  Sep 18, 2015 ]
They have a little bit of an angle. [ Nathan  Sep 18, 2015 ]
They aim straight down once installed. The electronics and rear housing do sit on an angle. They work and sound great in my 5.2.4 Atmos setup. [ Mark  Sep 18, 2015 ]
